On the Road: StructuresMarch 16 – April 4Soho Photo GalleryNew York, New YorkOpening Reception: Tuesday, March 17, 6-8pm

Once or twice a year I take to the road on long trips across the country, looking for interesting landscapes to photograph. In my travels I’ve noticed and photographed what, for want of a better term, could be called “structures” — lone buildings, towers,

monuments, objects, remains of dwellings — isolated within the landscape. Some are merely functional, some are commemorative, and some are surviving remnants of what once was, but they all serve as a fascinating counterpoint to the wider expanse around them.

This exhibit is the fourth installment at Soho Photo of this ongoing series and consists of thirteen 16x20 black-and-white prints. Most of them were taken during my last two cross-country road trips.

For those urbanites who have never driven through the vast open spaces of our country, all I can say is that America is One Big Country. Throughout every region, however, one will find these curiosities that often defy explanation. What is it? Why and when was it built? Why is it here? Clocking the miles, with the landscape blurring by, a structure of some strange kind will inevitably appear.

PublicationOn Landscape magazine just published volume 200, which included a 26-page photo essay by LensWork alumnus, Timothy Floyd. The essay is titled, On Autumn, and includes photographs Tim has made over the past four decades. The piece also features an editorial Tim wrote on how the meaning of autumn has evolved over the years for him. Tim writes, “Just as we miss the autumn colours if we don’t look up in our busy lives, we can miss the autumn of our lives if we don’t make an effort to fully live it, to be fully in it.” Tim says he is very proud to be featured in the milestone volume of this prestigious magazine, which includes many interesting articles and work by exceptional photographers. Of particular interest to LensWork readers is an article comparing images made with an 8x10 view camera and Velvia with the same image made with the PhaseOne IQ4 150MP camera. www.onlandscape.co.uk

“This collection of intimate photographs of horses I know (and who know me) reveal their sublime, sensual beauty. Their gentle curves rival those of the human female nude. Their powerful, defined muscles – naked except for a thin layer of velvety hair – remind me of photographs of well-sculpted male athletes.”

WorkshopThe Ghost Town Portraits Workshop - June 19-21, 2020What could be better than the tumbledown texture of a ghost town, and the grace of dancers and models, combined to create beautiful, moody portraits? In this special workshop, photographer Fritz Liedtke will combine two of his favorite things – historic places and beautiful faces – to teach you how to create stunning portraiture.

Join us for 3 days in the John Day River Territory, in north central Oregon. We’ll gather at PJ Ranch, where Fritz will share from his 30 years of experience photographing people. You’ll learn about professional lighting (natural light and off-camera flash), building rapport with subjects, posing, strong composition, good clothing choices, camera and lens options, and much more. We’ll spend time at

ghost towns hidden in the local area where Fritz will give demonstration shoots, and then you’ll have hours to photograph with models and dancers, with his oversight and input. Fritz takes a hands-on approach to learning by introducing you to a concept and then letting you apply it immediately, with his feedback. It’s the best way to learn.

The Ghost Town Portrait Workshop is an all-inclusive 3-day experience. You’ll be provided with hors d’oeuvres and meals, lodging at the local inn (single or double occupancy), models and dancers to photograph, special equipment loans from our sponsors ProPhoto Supply and Lensbaby, and all of Fritz’s attention.

Reserve now to take advantage of Early Bird Pricing, until March 14.Click here for more information or to reserve your spot.

“In a world that flaunts flawlessness as the ideal, can we find real beauty in the blemishes? The result was Astra Velum, which explores the beauty of ‘flawed’ human skin, with its freckles and scars, overlaid upon us like a thin veil of stars.”

We always enjoy the opportunity to look at new work. In fact, about half of what we’ve published in LensWork and LensWork Extended comes from submissions that were originally unsolicited, that is to say, from readers and subscribers like you. We love giving exposure to photographers who are doing good work but are not plugged-in to the publicity machines that galleries and traditional publishers provide!

Our submission guidelines are available in the link below. Please review these submission guidelines and then feel free to send in your work for consideration.

Obviously, we can’t publish everything that is submitted, but we also can’t publish work that isn’t ever submitted! The best way to start is to send in the work and let us take a look. Thanks!
