At Hempel, making our world brighter and more colourful is a priority throughout the year. We know that is true also for many of you.

Dear Customers and Business Partners

Spring is upon us, and so everything is brighter and more colourful. At Hempel, of course, making our world brighter and more colourful is a priority throughout the year. We know that is true also for many of you, our customers.

New HEMPATHANE HS 55810 is a topcoat that is bringing more colour into the world. Featured on pages 4 and 5, HEMPATHANE HS 55810 is beautifying more and more infrastructure and public places – including our own Tower Bridge.

Another new paint (introduced on page 6) is HEMPEL’S SILICONE ALUMINIUM 56914 for protecting metal surfaces exposed to extreme heat. We also present (pages 8 and 9) HEMPEL’S HS GAS PIPE COATING 87831, which actually speeds the flow of natural gas through pipelines. The new Nord Stream gas pipeline uses such “flow coat” to hasten gas on its way from Russia, beneath the Baltic Sea and to the EU.

On page 10, you can read about how Hempel is helping Aberdeen-based Swire Oilfield Services to protect its offshore cargo units. There also is an article about how Hempel coatings are being used in Russia’s preparations for the 2014 Olympics.

As you well know, the protective paints business is almost as much about people as it is about paint. Expert advice, logistics support, and helpful service are critically important. On the facing page, you will meet two of our Hempel professionals who are working hard every day to help you to colour our world.

Morris Ford Key Account Manager, Protective Coatings

Morris Ford knows the importance of respect, whether it is in the military or the marketplace. He also relishes a good challenge. Leaving school at the age of 16, Morris joined the Royal Marines Commandos before later opting for a career in the paints industry.

He first worked for Hempel from 1989 to 1991 as a sales representative, then moved on to a couple other firms in the business before returning to Hempel in 2002 as a regional sales manager. Morris says he had enjoyed his first time around at Hempel and so when he was approached by former colleague Nick Frowen he jumped at the opportunity for a challenge.

“I had the chance to start the Protective Coatings division again virtually from scratch, so I decided to give it a go,” Morris says. The second time around at Hempel, Morris is involved with both key large accounts as

well as smaller customers, including site and shop contractors, distributors, and fabricators. This includes dockside container cranes and bridges.

A very significant sales coup for Morris was securing the contract to supply coatings for repainting of Tower Bridge, as only the best suppliers were considered. Morris spent two and a half years tirelessly working to secure this project, along with another for the repainting of Southwark Bridge, producing specifications, following up, and eventually gaining the orders.

Respecting the customer is vitally important, because it is a two-way street, Morris explains. “Give them respect and gain their trust and respect. Treat the customer as you would wish to be treated yourself, with respect and understanding. And always make sure your advice is sound and never oversell as it will come back and bite you!”

A satisfied customer is a repeat customer, and making customers happy means understanding their needs while mobilizing the organisation to meet those needs. Deborah Christensen, team leader in Hempel UK’s Customer Service Department, has some 22 years of experience within the company that she can direct toward achieving the goal of customer satisfaction. A graduate in business and accounting, she joined Hempel immediately upon completing her education.

“I’ve worked in all Hempel segments – Marine, Protective and Yacht – and I’ve acquired a broad understanding of our customers’ requirements,” Deborah relates. “This, combined with the long experience that I’ve gained enables me to carry out my current role in the Customer Service Department.”

Deborah’s responsibility is to ensure the CSD runs efficiently, with her primary focus being

the Protective segment, where she works closely with the sales teams on the large key accounts. She particularly enjoys the challenge of servicing Hempel’s high profile wind tower manufacturers.

“I endeavour to treat all customers with the respect they deserve and strive to ensure each one receives first class customer service,” Deborah says.

To ensure that Hempel continues providing excellent customer service Deborah sees it as vitally important that there is effective communication between all elements both within and outside the company, and an important part of this is closer ties with Europe. “Ever since the UK organization joined Northern Europe we have a much closer alignment with our continental colleagues and I can only see this improving over time,” she says.

FOR ITS very good gloss and colour retention, low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and the economy of a high-solids paint, new HEMPATHANE HS 55810 is an excellent topcoat where structural steel needs protection in severely corrosive environments. It is especially suited to projects, such as bridges, with strict aesthetic requirements.

This topcoat is presently being used in restoring London’s landmark Tower Bridge. Some 22,000 litres of Hempel paints will be applied to that bridge, built in 1894 and which is to retain its traditional blue and white colours. The new topcoat was used, too, on the modern and equally beautiful new tied-arch (or “bowstring”) railroad bridge across the River Sado at Alcacer do Sal in Portugal. That project, completed in 2010, used 90,000 litres of Hempel paints.

For both the new Portuguese and old London bridges, HEMPATHANE HS 55810 is used as a finish on top of HEMPADUR MASTIC 45880, a high-solids epoxy paint.

Designed as a higher-solids, low-VOCs version of HEMPATHANE ENAMEL 55100, we expect this competitively priced new topcoat to become popular in a variety of infrastructure, gas and oil, and power generation applications. It is approved in the UK under Network Rail Specification NR/L3/CIV/039, item 7.3.1., as a durable two-pack finish coat for both new works and maintenance paint systems.

A polyurethane enamel, HEMPATHANE HS 55810 cures at low temperatures, has excellent application properties, and is surface dry in approximately 3 hours at 20°C. It can be applied by either air or airless spray and be brush-applied where touch-up is needed. This high gloss topcoat is available in Hempel’s full range of Multi-Tint colours.

All systems areavailable in allcolour shades.

A paint’s gloss and colour stability are fundamentally influenced by its binder, which is that component of the paint that forms the film and binds the pigments. Cost, drying and curing, and other properties also are influenced by the binder, so a topcoat should be selected in consideration of a given project’s needs and constraints.

Considering strictly gloss and colour stability, however, general observations can be made about the various paint types.

Polyurethanes have excellent gloss and stability. Whether used indoors or outdoors, they provide the best gloss and colour retention.

Acrylics, both water-borne and solvent-borne, also have good gloss and colour stability. They generally

outperform alkyds for these characteristics and do not yellow indoors.

Alkyds have reasonably good colour and gloss stability outdoors, but they do tend to yellow over time. This yellowing tendency is more significant when used indoors.

Epoxies have a tendency to chalk when exposed to sunlight, and that means their gloss diminishes rather quickly. For darker shades, this chalking will fade the colour. In the case of lighter shades, epoxy topcoats have a tendency to yellow over time. When used indoors, epoxies will chalk less, but the yellowing may still occur for lighter shades.

TO MEET customers’ increasingly demanding requirements for paint providing long-term protection to metal surfaces exposed to extreme heat, Hempel has updated its heat-resistant aluminium pigmented paint. The new silicon technology enables new HEMPEL’S SILICONE ALUMINIUM 56914 to fully cure at ambient temperatures.

The new paint wholly substitutes for HEMPEL’S SILICONE ALUMINIUM 56910 in all specifications. Once applied and cured, the new 56914 performs exactly the same as the older 56910. The main difference is that HEMPEL’S SILICONE ALUMINIUM 56914 need not be exposed to high temperature in order to cure fully. Thus, it provides protection against mechanical damage even before the painted object comes into high-temperature use.

Like HEMPEL’S SILICONE ALUMINIUM 56910, new 56914 provides heat resistance on surfaces like exhaust pipes, pipelines and smokestacks at temperatures up to 600°C. The new paint has some additional advantages over HEMPEL’S SILICONE ALUMINIUM 56910, however. It offers lower VOCs (478 g/l versus 585), higher solids (43% versus 35%), a shorter drying time (2 hours versus 3), and a lower cost per litre of solids applied.

HEMPEL’S SILICONE ALUMINIUM 56914 can be applied directly on steel or stainless steel (see illustration for two recommended systems). For good corrosion protection, a suitable zinc primer (e.g. HEMPEL’S GALVOSIL products or HEMPEL’S SILICONE ZINC 16900) should be applied first. HEMPEL’S SILICONE ALUMINIUM 56914 is available worldwide.

Note: This table only provides an example of information contained in Hempel’s new VOC Report. An actual report would include all products purchased by the client in the indicated period and the decimal level of precision would be greater. Product numbers: First 5 digits are product code, second 5 digits are colour code, last 2 last digits indicate can capacity in litres.

HEMPEL has created a new tool to help its customers in monitoring their emissions of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. It is designed especially to assist those clients who must comply with the European Union’s so-called SED (Solvent Emission Directive, 1999/13/EC).

Named the VOC Report, this new tool offers clients a detailed summary of their paint (and VOC) purchases from Hempel. As illustrated in the accompanying table (showing a slightly simplified version of such a report), the VOC Report lists all Hempel products purchased within a given period, the number of litres, the VOCs grams per litre, and both the total solids and VOCs (in kg and %).

Paint applicators subject to the SED (i.e. so-called “installations” consuming more than 5 tonnes of VOCs annually) are encouraged to develop so-called “solvent management plans”. With its

straightforward structure and precise information, the VOC Report can be a key input for such a plan.

The SED allows installations flexibility in how they manage their VOCs emissions. For example, they may use combinations of paints containing high and low levels of VOCs.

“If the VOC Report shows that a customer is close to exceeding its limits, Hempel can help the customer by recommending high volume solids products, waterborne products, or zero-to-low VOC paints,” explains Esperanza Fernández, from Hempel’s Group Assortment Division, who was involved in creating the VOC Report.

To obtain a VOC Report, a customer may contact Hempel’s local salesperson with whom the customer regularly cooperates.

In late 2011, the longest subsea pipeline in the world will begin supplying natural gas from Western Siberia to households and firms in the European Union. Hempel is pleased to be providing internal coatings for parts of this Nord Stream pipeline and related pipelines. This so-called “flow coat” (HEM-PEL’S HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830) will serve to speed the flow of gas, thus allowing it to be trans-ported more efficiently over the long distance (see accompanying story).

Construction of the subsea pipeline began in spring 2010. As of early April 2011, according to Nord Stream AG’s official website (www.nord-stream.com), 1,110 km of the 1,224 km Nord Stream 1 pipeline already was installed on the sea bottom. Construction on Nord Stream 2, a second

pipeline running parallel to the first, was to begin in May 2011. When Nord Stream 2 is completed in 2012, the project will have an annual capacity of 55 billion m3.

The pipeline is constructed from 12 m long pipe lengths that are 1.22 m in diameter. The pipe’s steel walls range from 27 to 41 mm thick. They are additionally coated with concrete 60 to 110 mm thick to give them extra weight and ensure their stability on the seabed.

Russia’s United Metallurgical Company is supply-ing 25% of the pipes (280,000 tonnes) for the first pipeline, while the German company EUROPIPE, Mülheim an der Ruhr is providing 75% (860,000 tonnes) of the pipes for Nord Stream 1.

REDUCING FRICTION in order to speed the flow of natural gas is an important aspect of modern pipeline systems, and HEMPEL’S HS GAS PIPE COATING 87831 was designed to meet just that need. This so-called “flow coat” is a rising star in Hempel’s range of pipeline coatings. It is an adjusted version of a very successful predecessor product, HEMPEL’S HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830.

Based upon long experience with the predecessor product, Hempel has made adjustments extending the shelf life. This aspect can be a challenge for high solids paints applied with low dry film thickness. New HEMPEL’S HS GAS PIPE COATING 87831 allows high speed of application, low wear of spray gun nozzles, and easy cleaning of spray nozzles.

HEMPEL’S HS GAS PIPE COATING 87831 is a two-component epoxy polyamine cured coating formulated in accordance with the American Petroleum Institute’s standard RP 5L2. It has passed all relevant tests according to the standards DIN EN 10 201:2003, ISO 15741:2001 and TRANSCO CM2. Used as a one-coat system, it features low VOCs (155 g/l), high solids (82%), and fast drying.

HEMPEL’S HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830 has been supplied since 2009 to Germany’s Mülheim Pipecoatings GmbH, a supplier of pipes for, among other projects, the Nord Stream offshore pipeline to run along the bottom of the Baltic Sea from Vyborg, Russia to Greifswald, Germany. Hempel also supplied coatings for the 440 km North European Gas Pipeline that will

link the Nord Stream pipelines to Europe’s existing natural gas transport systems.

This flow coating is not just for European markets. For example, Hempel Australia is supplying HEMPEL’S HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830 to Bredero Shaw, a global pipe coating leader that is supplying pipes for Australia’s 945 km QSN3 gas pipeline from South Australia’s Moomba Gas Fields to South West Queensland.

Hempel offers a range of solutions for protecting pipelines of all sorts. In addition to flow coatings, these include external coatings for new and existing pipelines, chemical resistant coatings for the interior of gas and oil pipelines, and internal/external coatings for potable water pipelines. For more information on these systems, please consult your Hempel representative and ask for Hempel’s Pipeline Protective Solutions brochure.

Hempel helps Swire Oilfield Services cover the worldSwire Oilfield Services needed a heavy-duty three-coat paint system that could be applied in a single 8-hour working shift. Hempel UK delivers it.

Aberdeen-based Swire Oilfield Services produces a wide range of offshore containers and other cargo carrying units for the energy industry. Hempel UK is its worldwide supplier of anticorrosive protection for that super-tough equipment. In addition, Hempel provides a dedicated coating advisor and project manager plus 10-year anticorrosion service.

The paint system is founded on HEMPADUR ZINC 17360 (50 μm dft), a zinc-rich epoxy primer that is hard-wearing, highly weather-resistant, and offers cathodic protection from mechanical damage. Also important, it has a short recoat interval.

The midcoat is HEMPADUR FAST DRY 15560 (100 μm dft), a polyamine adduct cured epoxy containing zinc phosphate. It is particularly well-suited to shop applications where fast recoating is essential.

HEMPEL’S PRO ACRYLIC 55880 is the topcoat (50 μm). Resistant to water and aliphatic hydrocarbons, it is designed for severely corrosive environments where lightfastness and gloss retention are required. It is isocyanate-free, which is required by the client.

To keep things easy while providing excellent protection, this same system – but minus the topcoat – is used on less exposed interior surfaces.

Hempel Russia scores early Olympic victory Hempel Russia has been selected to provide anticorrosive coatings for the combined motorway and railway from Adler (near Russia’s resort city of Sochi) to Krasnaya Polyana (site of the 2014 Winter Olympics). The transport infrastructure is being built by Russian Railways ahead of the 2014 Olympics. The work is expected to use 1.5 million litres of Hempel coatings.

Guaranteed delivery terms and technical expertise of the Hempel team were key advantages in winning the contract.

To be completed in 2013, the project involves designing and building 48 km of electrified rail tracks and more than 50 km of motor roads. Three new railway stations will be constructed and three more reconstructed. The project will integrate the existing and new roads into a single network.

According to preliminary estimates, 26.5 km of tunnels (including 10.3 km of railway tunnels, 6.7 km of motorway tunnels, and 9.5 km of auxiliary tunnels) plus 35 km of bridges and river crossings will be constructed.

Bridges along the route will be painted with a three-coat system comprised of HEMPADUR ZINC 17360 (60 μm), HEMPADUR MASTIC 45880 (130 μm), and HEMPATHANE TOPCOAT 55210 (60 μm).

HEMPEL’S customers will be main beneficiaries of its new global corporate strategy, named One Hempel – One Ambition. While aiming to make Hempel one of the world’s 10 largest coatings suppliers by 2015, the strategy focuses mainly upon things that customers value most.

Among other objectives, the new strategy aims to double sales in the Protective segment. Hempel endeavours to work even harder and smarter to provide its customers cutting-edge products and technologies through a state-of- the-art logistics organization while employing and training the best professionals in its industry.

The One Hempel – One Ambition strategy builds upon the One Hempel – Everywhere strategy adopted in 2006. The earlier strategy laid foundations for the more rapid growth Hempel is now pursuing.

“While we realize our strategy through 2015 is very ambitious,” Pierre-Yves Jullien, Hempel’s CEO, has told his global team, “we know from experience that it’s realistic and, more importantly, achievable. Hempel’s future is in our hands.”

To double Protective sales, the strategy specifically calls for improving how it customizes products to meet customers’ specific needs, aggressively working to win larger and cross-border orders, boosting operational efficiency, and focusing more on developing markets.

An end result will be that Hempel’s customers will gain from its Ambition.
