EDUCATION MINISTER’S VISITEDUCATION MINISTER’S VISIT

Education Minister, Peter Collier, visited our school yesterday. He was met by Student Councillors and accompanied members of our school community to a range of classrooms before sitting down for a conversation with members of our school

community.

The Minister commented on the range of highly effective classroom practices he noted

and the positive behaviour of students in our school.

P & CP & C

The P & C Association plays an integral role in the life of our school community with parent and community support being vital for us to continue our strong partnership between home, school and community. Our Aveley Primary School P & C continues to provide crucial funding to assist the school in accessing a range of resources to improve

outcomes for our students and to ensure a safe and secure school environment.

I would like to take this opportunity to, on behalf of the wider school community, thank the hard working P & C for their ongoing time and efforts. Funds raised by our P & C have contributed to the purchase of new House Shelters for our sports carnivals and provision for all of our students PP – 6, to access Mathletics – the highly motivating

computer based program which children are able to access from home and school.

CITY OF SWAN VERGE PCITY OF SWAN VERGE PARKING FLIER ARKING FLIER

Further to the message in our last newsletter about ongoing traffic and parking issues, we have attached a copy of the City of Swan’s verge parking information sheet. We would also take this opportunity to advise our school community that City of Swan Community Safety Advocates conduct school parking patrols across all schools within the Ellenbrook/Aveley area daily and are using an enforcement approach for Term 3 and

4 of the school year.

COCO22 & U& U

Our students’ CO2 & U Team, a part of the Low Carbon Schools Pilot Program, are continuing to meet regularly to progress the roles and functions of the group. This cooperative group of year four and five students meet in their own time each fortnight. Students have a variety of roles and responsibilities and they refine the processes and procedures for running

effective meetings as time goes on.

At an earlier meeting, members of the group put forward a range of headings to consider for naming the group. These were discussed and voted on at a meeting with CO2 & U being accepted as the official title. At this week’s meeting, students voted on a range of submissions to be considered as a group logo. This was a difficult decision with some

impressive options being put forward by several CO2 & U members.

The successful CO2 & U name was designed by Ella Mifflin and the logo voted on at yesterday’s meeting was designed by Charlotte Herbert. Well done to all members who

contributed ideas to this meeting.

PLANNING FOR 2017PLANNING FOR 2017

Planning for our school for 2017 is well underway. Data and research suggest that we will be catering for a student population of approximately 680 students by August, 2017. In order to accommodate ongoing growth, the Department of Education has approved four more transportables to be placed on site before the commencement of the 2017

school year.

RAISING HAPPY CHILDRRAISING HAPPY CHILDRENEN

Further to Myths 1 & 2 included in our last newsletter, here are the next two for you to consider;

Myth 3: Housework is for Parents Only

Wrong! Children should have set tasks and responsibilities in the household and for which they are not paid. This

should start around three years of age when children are keen to copy others and are also very eager to help.

Myth 4: Frustration Is Bad For Children

Not so! Life is full of frustrations and children should get used to that fact. Parents should supply all of a child’s needs

but only 25% of its wants. The word “No” from a parent is a great character builder for the child.

SCHOLASTIC READ MORE IN MAY SCHOLASTIC READ MORE IN MAY

Well done to a number of our students who participated in Scholastic’s Read More in May initiative. Congratulations to Ollie in T6 for being one of the top twenty readers in the state. Ollie

has won $100 worth of vouchers to purchase a few more books.

SPORTING UPDATESPORTING UPDATE

What a busy seven weeks we have had in Sport. The excitement of the 2016 Olympic Games, Inter school Cross Country, school visits, Before and After School Sports and of course swimming

lessons.

Interschool Cross Country

On 5 August, selected students participated in the annual EISA Interschool Cross Country held at Swan Valley Anglican School. A number of fantastic individual results contributed to the school achieving its best ever result. The students and I enjoyed the day and valued the opportunity to put all our hard training into practice. A large thank you to the parents that assisted on the day

of the carnival. Your help was tremendous and we could not have done it without you.

Sporting Schools

Sporting Schools is once again providing our students with fabulous opportunities to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities. The student participation levels from the start of the year are improving and as a school we have been recognised for our great commitment to the Sporting Schools initiative. Thank you to all the parents and students for your support, it is fantastic

to see so many active kids. Unfortunately, Sporting Schools is only funded for three terms, making this term the last for 2016.

Athletics Carnival 2016

Our Athletics carnival preparation coincided with the Olympic Games giving students an extra level of interest and has resulted in massive participation levels at before school Monday athletics practice. The 2016 Aveley Athletics carnival is fast approaching

and this has been our focus for Term 3 within Sport. The carnival dates for 2016 (weather permitting) are as follows:

Year 1 & 2 Jumps – Monday, 17 October

Year 3-6 Jumps and Throws – Tuesday,18 October

Carnival day – Friday, 21 October

If you are able to assist in any capacity on any or all of these days, it would be greatly appreciated. If you are able to assist, please either send me an email or see me in

person to discuss further.

E: [email protected]

The Interschool Athletics carnival for selected students is to be held on Friday of Week 9 (16 September ). Students selected will be given a note to take home over

the course of the next week with further information.

Hello parents, carers and friends, thank you for your support.

Quiz night Cancelled. We are extremely disappointed to have to cancel and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. There was a significant cost for the hire of the Aveley Community Building and an MC that we would not have been able to cover with the small amount of tickets sold. We thought we might be able to postpone the event but this was not possible. Refunds will be arranged for those people that did buy tickets

and we will be advising all prize donors of the cancellation. Any prizes that donors do not want returned will be used as prizes for raffles. We would like to thank all of the people who gave up their time and effort to get the Quiz Night organised and many

thanks to all of the prize donors.

Happy Father’s Day. Our Father’s Day stall was held this week and we had a good selection of gifts for the children to purchase. It is always a pleasure watching the children choosing a gift for their dad/grandad knowing that they put their hearts into their choices. Thanks to the volunteers who helped the

days run smoothly. We wish all dads a happy Father’s Day.

The school had a grant from the Stronger Communities Program approved. The program matches funds that we previously raised and will be used to create an outdoor play area/obstacle course at the back of the school. The area will be a public space outside the school grounds so it will be accessible to the general community. Work will commence on the area very soon and we

look forward to this new amenity.

Entertainment Books are still available for purchase but we will not have any kept at the school as of the end of next week. To save on delivery costs please get yours from the school before September 6, or you can always buy the digital version. This year’s book has many great bargains with discounts and offers valid until July 2017 so it is still good value! Get your copy via this link: https://www.entertainmentbook.com.au/orderbooks/91183e , find it on the Aveley P&C Facebook page or search for the Aveley Primary School selling page at the Entertainment Book website. There is also a display in the school office for a sample

book and order forms.

School banking was not held this week because of the Father’s Day stall but will be back next Tuesday morning in the

undercover area as usual.

If you have any feedback, fundraising ideas or you would like to help the P&C we would love to hear from you. Our next meeting

will be held at the school on Monday, 12 September and everyone is welcome to attend.

To contact the P&C or to keep up with what we are doing you can email us at [email protected], find our facebook

page, see our news in the newsletter or approach any of our committee members. (President - Phil Bennett - 0408 207 192)

Thanks from your Aveley Primary P&C.
