COACHING PHILOSOPHY

Many coaches use sport as a vehicle to enrich the lives and the futures of their athletes. Their greatest reward is not the outcome of winning but rather the process of training and competition that positively affects the personal development of young athletes. It is with these thoughts in mind that we try to be the best coaches, mentors, and role models we can be for our athletes at The Odyssey Institute.

Participation in sports provides opportunities for athletes to grow physically, mentally and socially in positive ways. It is our responsibility as coaches to provide the atmosphere that will enable this growth to take place.

Competition is an important part of athletics, but it should never be a requirement for a young person to participate in a sport. We encourage all interested young people to join our program and to experience the positive growth that can come from that participation. Our team is made up of competitors who will get the best training available to succeed in competitive situations and participants who will get the best training available to enjoy and grow from their sporting experience. We hope that our participants will one day be our competitors. We are a non-cut sport and believe we have a place for all willing participants.

We want our teams to win meets, but we have a much broader sense of the term success and it is that definition that we work towards as your coaches. When athletes and teams train hard to develop their ability, give their best in competition, and show the will to push themselves beyond their self-imposed limits, they are successful. We will strive for this success and have fun doing it every day. Winning is a mindset that we strive to build for life not just in an event or a track meet. We strive to become better as human beings everyday and as such adopt the motto of "1% better everyday" to signify that, if nothing else, we should be striving to be better today than we were yesterday.

TEAM RULES

Our rules can be summarized by three things: Respect for others, respect for self, and respect for surroundings. We will only achieve our team and individual goals if each student-athlete commits to these principles. It is recognized by the track coaches that all humans make mistakes, so when a rule is broken, we will try to fairly but firmly address the situation, and there will be consequences. Understand that we care about you and the quality of your experience on the team. Breaking of these rules will harm you or others, and we are committed to helping you and the team to have the best possible experience.

ATTENDANCE

It is required that all athletes come to every practice, meeting, and assigned team function. Some exceptions will be granted on an individual basis, but in general, full attendance is expected. If you have a problem attending an event, it is the student-athletes responsibility to notify the appropriate coach. It is not the parent’s nor a teammate’s responsibility.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES

• One unexcused absence (practice, meet) may result in missing the next meet.

• Two unexcused absences (practice or Team Time) – the athlete may not be allowed to attend practice or meets until they meet one-on-one with Head Coach Hiatt to determine the course of action and plan to ensure attendance going forward.

• Three unexcused absences (after the meeting with Coach Hiatt) may result in being dismissed from the team.

UNEXCUSED LATENESS

• Unexcused tardy to any required event = warning

• Unexcused tardy to any required event a second time = athlete may not be allowed to participate in the next meet at Individual coaches discretion and based on situation.

• Unexcused tardy to a third required event = the athlete may not be allowed to attend practice or meets until they meet one-on-one with Head Coach Hiatt to determine whether or not the athlete will be allowed to continue as a team member.

• Another unexcused tardy after meeting with Coach Hiatt = possible dismissal from the team.

*UNEXCUSED ABSENCE = the coaching staff was not informed of an athlete’s absence ahead of time, or that athlete’s reason for being absent was not acceptable in the judgment of the head coach.

HARASSMENT OF OTHERS will result in meeting with the head coach and possible dismissal from team if situation is deemed warranted by the head coach.

SWEARING/INAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE & COMMENTS:

Our team environment is not the place for off-color jokes, statements, sexual innuendos, swearing, or any remarks that ridicule others. The coaches will deal with all discipline regarding swearing/inappropriate language/comments. If an athlete breaks this rule, they will be asked to stop the action and apologize to those around. If no apology is completed, the athlete will be requested to leave the practice. If this occurs at a meet, the athlete will be scratched from the competition and upon returning to school will discuss with the head coach the road ahead. This road may range from warning to dismissal from the team. If this occurs more than once per season, the following chain of events will occur: • 1st offense: talk with Coach • 2nd offense: may be asked to leave practice for the day (may be removed from upcoming events if at a competition) • 3rd offense: athlete may be asked to leave practice immediately and may not be allowed to participate in team activities until they have met one-on-one with the head coach at a time of the coach’s convenience. At this time, determination will be made as to the future of the athlete on the team.

DRESS/APPEARANCE AT PRACTICE & MEETS:

Your appearance speaks volumes about your character, the school and the program with which you are associated. The pride that you take in grooming and apparel must hold the high standards of the people you compete with and against. At The Odyssey Institute, we are proud of who we are and show the colors to that affect.

Practice Apparel: Only acceptable athletic apparel will be allowed for practices. Any athlete wearing apparel that is offensive or inappropriate in logo, statement, color or deemed distracting to others will be asked to change and/or to leave practice.

Meet apparel: All team members will be issued a team uniform. You are required to wear this uniform while representing and competing for The Odyssey Institute. While attending competitive meets you will only wear issued uniforms. Warmups will be available for purchase at the beginning of the season. All outer wear should be within Odyssey Institute compliance, (ie. sweatshirts/pants should be plain in school colors or Odyssey approved logo wear). If you are not being transported from the meet or venue and you have been properly excused to depart with a responsible party, you may change out of your uniform gear.

STEALING:

We work in tight surroundings and in many cases at other schools during competitions. Trust is a keystone of our program. If suspected of or caught stealing you may be dismissed from team.

Page 5: ODYSSEY HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD TEAM HANDBOOK …€¦ · with recording video of athletes doing jumps, throws, and hurdles, help with athletes, take stats, and other tasks. If

ALCOHOL/DRUGS/TOBACCO:

The Odyssey Institute and Odyssey School Board policies apply as well as expectations laid out in the Athletic Department Handbook for all athletes regardless of the sport.

EQUIPMENT:

All equipment/clothing checked out to an athlete by OI must be taken care of by the athlete who received it. If anything is lost or destroyed due to poor care, that person is responsible for paying the replacement cost of that item or items.

• Shoes are the athletes’ responsibility. Coaches will provide guidance and recommendations as to proper shoes. It is up to the athletes and parents to decide on what can be afforded.

Sometimes athletes will be allowed to check out implements (throwing, vaulting, etc) during the season, off-season or during holidays. The same rules apply as with clothing, with respect to accountability.

Replacement spikes (the metal spikes for the bottom of spike shoes) will be provided at no cost to individual team members by coaches as supplies last, but these can be purchased in season online or at Big 5 and Dick's Sporting Goods. 1/4" spikes are acceptable at all surfaces we will run on this year.

ROLE OF CAPTAINS:

The role of team captain at Odyssey includes but is not limited to:

A) A selected leader who leads by example. A leader who provides direction and verbally encourages teammates.

B) Helping coaches with internal management of the team. This plays out by your awareness of misbehavior (related to team rules) by team members and confronting them with the intention of getting them to change their behavior in a firm but respectful manner before coaches become aware of the issue.

C) Serving as liaison between coaching staff and the team; keeping eyes and ears open to what is going on with the team, and be a person who athletes can feel comfortable talking to about concerns with team-related issues (especially if those athletes do not feel comfortable talking to the coaches themselves).

D) Start team warm up drills and practices when directed by coaches.

E) End practices by leading the team breakdown or chant when appropriate.

Page 6: ODYSSEY HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD TEAM HANDBOOK …€¦ · with recording video of athletes doing jumps, throws, and hurdles, help with athletes, take stats, and other tasks. If

TRACK MEETS:

Track & Field athletes and volunteers are needed as much as possible at track meets to help with recording video of athletes doing jumps, throws, and hurdles, help with athletes, take stats, and other tasks. If you are a member of the Track and Field Team you will attend all home track meets. If you are not competing, then you are required to help in the execution of the meet. (Helping includes when we are traveling also. Our expectation is that our team will help clear and set up hurdles at all meets. Any Odyssey athlete not warming up for an event should be helping clear and set the track to make the meet run smoother). The Coaches will assign duties the day before the meet. We will not be conducting a home meet this year, but as we expand and grow this will be a need. It is our hope to be able to rent a track in the near future to put on invitational meets as ways to raise funds for the program. As we attend meets, our standards are set that we will help us be professional at all meets, both home and away.

PARENT INFORMATION PACKET

Whether you are an experienced parent from our team or brand new to high school track & field athletics, we welcome you to the wonderful experience of Odyssey Minotaur Track & Field.

We operate under rules of the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA), The Odyssey Preparatory Academy School District, and Odyssey High School Athletics as far as eligibility. However, we often find ourselves as team members, parents, and coaches much more responsible to the principles of dedication, perseverance, teamwork, honesty, sacrifice, and fairness. To limit the understanding of track & field to only the world of sports is to limit the potential impact this activity can and will have in the lives of the young men and women who persevere in this . . . perhaps the most difficult of challenges. Although skill and talent have a place in what we do, the athlete who dedicates him or herself to improvement will eventually prevail . . . not only on the track or field, but in every aspect of future life. No other activity in high school comes anywhere near the individual intensity and thoroughness of track & field as it prepares the youth of today to be the consummate leaders of tomorrow. The athletes who immerse themselves in this sport develop the mental ability to deal with life’s difficulties, the physical understanding of health and its relationship to overall happiness, and most importantly, draw the connection between personal hard work and the truly satisfying rewards that come from it.

Track & field has only one aspect which can be both positive and negative . . .it is the ‘great revealer’ of a human being’s internal character. When you challenge yourself with this sport, in time you are forced to look inside yourself and confront what makes up the measure of the man you will be. Other sports offer a ‘way out’ . . . an ‘excuse’ . . . a ‘rationalization for substandard effort’. Track & field gives no such luxury. The negative aspect of this can frighten a young athlete, but our team universally confronts this fear, overcomes it and re-channels it to a positive, and encourages the athlete to draw upon the inner strength of character developed by this sport as he or she battles life’s future great challenges. It is truly so much more than just a sport of running, jumping and throwing.

As coaches, we hope to enlist your support, not just by attending meets or providing team snacks, but by fully understanding and encouraging the principles which we try to develop in each of our young athletes, regardless of physical talent or prowess. For many years, we have sought to provide the best possible environment for each athlete to develop their personal skills according to the tenets we listed above . . . and they work very well with the highest of community and personal standards. Allow us to help to provide the best opportunity for success by supporting them fully as they learn what it takes to work for personal excellence.

Please feel free to communicate with myself or any member of our staff at any time. We understand that our involvement with these athletes may go far beyond the field as we work with you to encourage them to become the best they can be . . . in running and in future life.

“THE BASICS”

The Sport

Track & field is an event of worldwide acceptance and support. Virtually every high school of every size across the nation sponsors boys and girls teams, with similar events in most every state. The track is 400 meters around and is the same distance at every outdoor facility. We are a member of the Arizona Interscholastic Association and we compete in 3A division. This division has 67 schools that range in size to schools like Buckeye Union High School to smaller schools like Arizona College Prep. We try to compete in at least eight state qualifying meets during the season. Qualifying for State requires either hitting the predetermined time, height or distance that the state board posts prior to the season, or making a provisional time, height or distance and being in the top 28 athletes in the state in that event scoring the mark at a qualifying tournament. The state championships which are held at Mesa Community College is at the beginning of May and following that meet is a tournament of champions where all division winners will compete against each other.

A varsity team is made up of the following individual running events: 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200 meters, 100, 110 & 300 meter hurdles. There are three standard relays: 4x100, 4x400 and the 4x800. The following field events are what are contested: Shot Put, Discus High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Javelin, and Pole Vault, though as a school, we do not participate in pole vault or javelin. These events will be contested with several athletes per event and the scoring points for placing in the top tier will vary based upon the number of participant teams. Each event is individually competed and there is an overall team score where all event finishes are added up at the end of a meet. Varsity invitationals usually cap their registration to 3 or 4 athletes per event. We take our 3 or 4 best athletes to these events based off of meet and practice performance. We have Challenge Thursdays or Wednesdays, depending if the meet is on a Friday or Saturday. This is where a teammate can challenge for a spot at the upcoming meet if they think that they can fill the spot. This is at coach’s discretion.

The Team

Odyssey has grown from a Team of 8 to a team that averages around 100 athletes. The success at both the Junior High and High School level has elevated our team quickly over the last few years. Our team is competitive for various reasons, from athletes who have worked hard, parents who support well and coaches who care and focus on peaking each athlete’s potential. Our success is the hard work and dedication of our team atmosphere that allows us to field a vast and deep program.

The Commitment

Although the traditional track season in Arizona goes from beginning of December through the summer, most of our athletes participate in other sports. Any athlete can start training in August if not involved in a fall sport. Our outdoor practice schedule will be from 4:00 pm to 6:15 pm on Monday thru Thursday, Fridays will be broken down by event type for practice times as it is a non-school day. The practices will be shorter as we get later in the season due to the demands of the individual events and needs of the individual athlete’s physiology.

Page 9: ODYSSEY HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD TEAM HANDBOOK …€¦ · with recording video of athletes doing jumps, throws, and hurdles, help with athletes, take stats, and other tasks. If

IMPORTANT SCHEDULING NOTE

Since each workout is a part of a holistic part of a training program, each workout is important. Athletes who are not able to complete the workout schedule or are unable to make the commitment to train effectively do not give themselves a fair opportunity to succeed and will have trouble competing for a varsity spot. We ask athletes to schedule every possible appointment around workouts that are given to the athlete at the start of the season. As the formal season begins those athletes missing a practice are subject to missing the next competitive event, a penalty that is laid out within our team rules. Athletes also are expected to attend rare but special events, from fundraisers to banquets honoring their achievements. We hope our parents agree that the immense benefits of track & field more than outweigh the time commitment involved. This sport definitely rewards the committed athlete and parent, but our athletes have time for top-notch academics, church positions, extracurricular activities, and even work if they desire to budget their time . . . another lesson learned in this sport.

Uniforms & Equipment

Our school provides a competitive uniform. We have Varsity and JV uniforms. Warm up tops and pants are available for purchase at the beginning of the Season for personal use. We issue these for Varsity and JV athletes prior to the meet. The uniforms will be returned to the managers prior to leaving the meet or on return to the school so they may be laundered. The uniform will be inspected and signed off by the managers that it has been provided and then returned.

Good running shoes are the only requirement of this sport. There are several great running stores in our area.

It is also recommended that each athlete have a pair of specialist’s shoes. These can be spikes (running, jumping and pole vault all have their own event specific spikes) as well as a throwers shoe. These can be purchased at the same stores or online- see website for more info. It is important that the athlete try on all shoes before they buy them.

Fundraisers

In order to minimize the amount of time spent by students (and parents) in fund raising events we will be participating in a school provided fundraising event as our main fundraiser this year. This is much like the fundraiser that we used last year (snap raise) where athletes will be asked to submit a number of e-mails or phone numbers that will send out automated messages about the ability to support our team. We will be working on other endeavors in future seasons, but for this year, this is our main push for fundraising. While the school district does its best to stretch money for school needs and athletics, fundraising remains a priority. In order to facilitate our program at its highest levels and provide our athletes with the coaching and equipment needs, we must dedicate ourselves to bringing in as much fundraising revenue as possible.

Page 10: ODYSSEY HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD TEAM HANDBOOK …€¦ · with recording video of athletes doing jumps, throws, and hurdles, help with athletes, take stats, and other tasks. If

Awards Banquets

Upon completion of each season, the team will host an awards banquet that recognizes team and individual excellence as well as participation by all. The date for the banquet will be announced closer to the end of the season.

Scholarships

Every athlete who runs for Odyssey Track & Field will not compete at a level where a scholarship is a reasonable expectation, but we encourage all of those that feel a desire to continue to compete to use this as a goal. Odyssey has established a reputation as a rising school where all runners, jumpers and throwers graduate with skills and a desire to take it to the next level whether in academics or in track and field. Our training, goal setting, and team traditions use college scholarships as a goal and any athlete that wants to seriously look at competing at the next level will be given every chance to earn that.

We cultivate and maintain relationships with several college programs in several areas of the country. We correspond with many NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA colleges in order to keep the upcoming stars on our teams in the recruiting forefront. At state meets our athletes run in front of the premier track coaches in the nation and will see scouts from all major conferences. We as a staff utilize multiple platforms to reach out to smaller schools and our personal contacts with coaches to promote our athletes that wish to continue their Track and Field careers.

Our process is to allow our athletes to acclimate and see their progress from their Freshman to their Sophomore year. At the end of their Sophomore year we start counseling with our athletes and their parents if they are inherently interested in running in college and we continue to council and promote the athlete within the wishes of the family to the schools that fit the scholar/athletes needs and wants. We do want this to be athlete driven as the athlete will be the one asked to perform so it has to be their want and desire, not the parents or the coaches.

The Competition

During the track season, our athletes have races which test their ability against local, regional, and national class competition. The simplest meets are the traditional ‘dual’ meet, a tri-meet (3 teams at one site) or quad-meet (4 teams). All athletes will compete in these meets.

We will attempt to compete in eight state qualifying meets (These are larger invitational meets that range from eight to fifty teams), and more if time and budget allow. We would also like to have a Freshman/Sophomore invitational meet for our JV and top-level younger athletes so they can get the feel of an invitational meet. These are all subject to availability, timing, and budget.

Travel

Any time Odyssey Track & Field leaves the school for competition, we all travel together and use school transportation or commercial carrier. Athletes travel together using the same mode of transportation and we use this as part of our ‘team time’ together. Athletes must travel with the team. If there is a situation where the athletes would need to leave with the family, they must fill out the travel forms at the meet with the coach. (SEE INFO SECTION FOR FORM) No student athletes are allowed to travel home with other students or with other parents.

“The Body”

Injuries

Track & Field rarely sees any ‘catastrophic’ or long-term injuries but nagging pains and/or discomforts should always be reported to the coaching staff and athletic trainer. Athletes will be able to avoid almost all injury by following the guidelines below:

1.) Follow the training program set up for you by the coaching staff.

Athletes who alter or vary the training schedule will put themselves at risk! Each workout is designed to build upon the one that went before . . . alteration diminishes recovery or prevents continued improvement.

2.) Wear proper footgear and monitor it closely!

There is no excuse for bad shoes on this team. If in need, please speak with your coaches . . . keep an eye on the condition of your shoes (replace about every 200 to 300 miles). Check with your event coach BEFORE purchasing any competition shoes or racing flats to make sure you make the right purchase.

3.) Report any injury to the coaching staff and the Athletic Trainer!

Generally, low-grade and transient pain is not a problem unless it continues past a few days. Any clicking, popping, or snapping noise should be evaluated by a trained professional. Alert the coaches and then follow through immediately with medical treatment.

Contemporary studies with elite athletes (Western States 100m Competitors and Hawaii Kona Ironman Competitors) have shown the following are most important in avoiding colds/flus, especially in public places.

• Athletes Should get to bed within 15 minutes of the same time every night. This is the single most important element to cold avoidance. Athletes should avoid talking on the phone during the last 20 minutes before they go to sleep to help with the ease of falling asleep.

• Athletes should stay hydrated throughout the day. Bring your own water bottle, as one of the most contaminated places in the school are the drinking fountains (located just outside the bathrooms).

• Athletes need to eat properly. This means: 4-5 servings of protein (meat) per week. Complex carbs are eaten within 30 minutes of a hard workout (bananas, Powerbars, crackers). Hydrate with 20 ounces of Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement within 30 minutes of a hard workout. Eat 4-5 smaller meals throughout the day. Don’t skip breakfast. Eat a balanced selection of foods. Do not overeat any one thing. Supplement ONLY with a standard multivitamin, and only after a doctor’s OK. Proper nutrition is secondary to nothing when avoiding colds/flu.

Page 12: ODYSSEY HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD TEAM HANDBOOK …€¦ · with recording video of athletes doing jumps, throws, and hurdles, help with athletes, take stats, and other tasks. If

Training

We train using a ‘hard-easy’ schedule (making each workout all that much more important!). We structure daily workout capacities as well as a long-term plan. These cycles build, one on the other, for a full-year program designed to promote ability in the athlete with a minimal risk of injury throughout the high school career.

For parents, the ramifications are simple. We strongly encourage (require) each athlete to attend practice on a daily basis in order to continue progress and reduce the risk of injury. The program available to your son or daughter is not ‘haphazard’ but rather designed to provide the most intensive development with the least amount of training time. Workouts are generally 2 hours or less in length and allow athletes ample time to excel in other aspects of their lives with proper time management (the true heart of the “track takes too much time” problem).

Rest & Recovery

Odyssey Track & Field trains using the ‘hard-easy’ system where one hard workout is followed by an easy one. This allows the athlete to recover and be able to challenge himself at the next workout. Workouts apply stress to the body that forces the body to adapt. This training effect is what helps the athlete become faster and stronger.

Parents are specifically responsible for most of the recovery and rest an athlete receives. After the stresses of a workout are applied, the athlete goes home, eats balanced meals, hydrates well, and gets adequate rest (usually 8-9 hours per night). This ‘retraining’ period, specifically supervised by parents, is a critical aspect of a high school runner’s physical program. Please encourage your son or daughter to follow parental and team guidelines for rest and recovery.

“Academics” Eligibility

Odyssey School District eligibility requires a student-athlete to have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA (out of 4.0 possible) and cannot have below a C in any core class. However, most parents and the coaching staff are interested in grades much higher than the minimum. In fact, running and the dedication that goes into it go along quite nicely with excellent grades. Our team routinely averages much higher than the 2.0 minimum cumulative GPA as we strive for athletic excellence.

Coaches will take an active role in monitoring the grades of each athlete and we also support individual parental monitoring of the grades. Synergy parent portal system allows daily monitoring of attendance and scores. Many of the scholarship opportunities our students receive are at least in part due to their superior academic work, so we strongly encourage athletes and parents to set academics as a first priority with running second. Please insure you are seeing and interacting with your scholar and monitoring their grades. LOW Grades = No Competing. Eligibility reports are run by the athletic director every three weeks on Monday. Scholars that are ineligible can become eligible by getting below standard grade to a standard level by the next Monday. Ineligible athletes will be checked each Monday leading to the next grade check, while eligible athletes will not be checked by the A.D. for another three weeks.

Page 13: ODYSSEY HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD TEAM HANDBOOK …€¦ · with recording video of athletes doing jumps, throws, and hurdles, help with athletes, take stats, and other tasks. If

"Contribution" Our core theme for this track year will be contribution. We want to stay true to our school’s values and the school has chosen “Culture of Contribution” to be its focus this year. In making this idea our key, it comes with a few other root standards that help build it: discipline and effort. In all things, we want our scholar/athletes to recognize we are part of a bigger world and it is our responsibility to contribute to it to make it a better place. With this, we push the values of discipline and keep our focus on integrity and the one thing we can all control: effort. In training our scholar/athletes for life we wholly believe in approaching life with a plan, having discipline to stay with it, and putting forth the effort to maximize it.

Odyssey Track And Field

2019 Season

Throwing Practice Safety Protocol:

1. Line standard behind the pit or away from throwing field. 2. When entering the Pit yell “Pit”. This will ensure that if there is someone down

range that they are aware a thrower is preparing to throw and can exit the field immediately.

3. All implements will be recovered after the last implement has been thrown in the case that there are multiple throws going in a row. Throwers will proceed down range to retrieve their implements together ensuring there shouldn’t be anyone throwing while gathering implements down range (everyone should be going down range to retrieve implements).

4. If throwing for measurement and throwers are retrieving between throws, no one is to enter the pit until the thrower has exited the range and has yelled “LINE” upon returning to the line of throwers.

5. Coaches will ensure that the range has been marked off as needed with cones or other visible markers to ensure that other athletes are aware of the range zone.

6. Lines should be marked as well so athletes now were the standing line is in relation to the pit and range.

Throwers agreement: By signing this agreement I am stating that I understand the safety protocol of the OI throwing range and will follow it whenever entering into the OI range to manipulate implements. Failure to follow protocol will result in at the least withdraw from the next competition and possibly the removal from the Track Team upon inquiry of the violation by the Throwing Coach and Head Coach.

GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF SPORT NUTRITION 1) Consume a diverse diet emphasizing at least three (3) of the five food groups for

each meal

¾ Avoid an unnecessarily repetitive diet of the same foods each week ¾ Incorporating diversity in food and beverage choices will promote

corresponding diversity in vitamin, mineral, and other required nutrient intakes

¾ Example: Consume two to three different cereals each week with two to three distinct fruit combinations

2) Select and consume foods in their natural state

¾ Foods in their natural (i.e. unprocessed or lightly processed) state have greater overall nutritional value

¾ Foods in their natural (i.e. unprocessed or lightly processed) state contain less sodium, trans fat, and other undesirable constituents

¾ Examples: Oranges instead of orange juice, bananas instead of energy bars, and whole-wheat bread instead of white bread

3) Emphasize moderation

¾ The foundation of an excellent diet is healthful foods ¾ Occasional, moderate consumption of somewhat lower nutritional quality

foods and beverages can be a component of a nourishing nutritional program

¾ Example: Eighty-five (85) to ninety (90) percent of nutritional intake should emphasize high quality foods / beverages while approximately ten (10) percent could be represented by foods / beverages of slightly lesser nutritional quality / density

ALLIED NUTRITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS & STRATEGIES

Nutritional (i.e. Vitamin and / or Mineral) Supplementation 1) Supplementation Research

¾ Optimal nutrition is fundamentally predicated on consumption of whole foods and corresponding beverages

¾ There is no evidence that relatively high intakes of vitamins and / or minerals improve athletic performance

¾ Collectively, available evidence therefore suggests that vitamin and / or mineral supplementation may serve as dietary “insurance:” supplementation supports an already adequate diet yet cannot correct a nutritionally deficient diet

2) Recommendation

¾ Aim for average daily dietary intake of 1,300 milligrams (mg) of calcium ¾ Consider daily or every-other day supplementary intake of a calcium

supplement such as Os-CalR ¾ Corresponding Vitamin D supplementation is likely unnecessary assuming

regular consumption of Vitamin D fortified milk ¾ Consider daily or every-other day supplementation with a multi-vitamin /

multi-mineral supplement such as CentrumR Multivitamin / Multimineral supplement

Hydration 1) Water Intake

¾ A student-athlete should seek to consume 1.0 to 1.5 milliliters of water per dietary calorie of average daily energy expenditure

¾ Example: A student-athlete expending 3,000 dietary calories per day should consume 3,000 milliliters or, equivalently, 3.0 liters of water per day (approximately 100 fluid ounces per day)

2) Recommendation

¾ In order to secure an individualized daily water consumption goal, provide Coach Hanson or Coach Messer with the following information: a) weight (lbs.) b) height (inches) c) age (years) and d) average weekly training volume (miles per week); your coaches will subsequently calculate and provide the aforementioned individualized daily water consumption goal

Page 31: ODYSSEY HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD TEAM HANDBOOK …€¦ · with recording video of athletes doing jumps, throws, and hurdles, help with athletes, take stats, and other tasks. If

CONCLUDING PRINCIPLES & RECOMMENDATIONS

1) Maintain your existing commitment to consuming three (3) quality meals each day

based on the various food and beverage options previously listed in this resource 2) Do not focus on measuring your weight but rather focus on managing your weight

through consumption of a diet based on the various food and beverage options previously listed in this resource

3) Always be aware of and, ideally, always incorporate both the general principles of

sport nutrition and the complementary Food Pyramid when specifically considering food / beverage choices and generally considering overall dietary construction

4) Mineral (such as calcium) and / or multivitamin / multimineral supplementation

may be unnecessary if the aforementioned commitment to quality nutrition is consistently emphasized and maintained; nevertheless, consumption of a mineral and / or multivitamin / multimineral supplement may provide a measure of dietary “insurance” as one seeks to optimize overall nutrient intake and associated micronutrient status

5) Sustain a daily commitment to adequate, individualized water intake that reflects

consideration of physical activity level (i.e. training)
