Ben WalshDevelopment Coordinator
It has been a busy couple of months of footy in the Riverina with boys and girls around the region consuming footy in a variety of different ways with School Footy, Gala Days, Sporting Schools Programs, Auskick and Holiday Programs at the fore. The fight for High School superiority has been decided with all six of our local school competitions won and done for another year. Kildare were successful in the Carroll Cup and Year 7/8 Girls, The Riverina Anglican College in the Year 9/10 and Year 7/8 Boys (Currie Cup) and Mater Dei won the Open and Year 9/10 Girls. As always, we saw a high standard of footy and competitions that are of envy to all other regions around the state. Congratulations to TRAC Year 7/8 Boys and Mater Dei Open Girls who both went on to become State Champions. The Paul Kelly Cup is always a highlight on the calendar with close to record team numbers vying for a spot at the next level. Henschke showed its strength taking out both the boys girl’s competition. We’ve had our Sporting Schools Pro-grams on offer to all primary schools and we have enjoyed getting out too many regional towns promoting the game to a wide variety of kids. Club Auskick is as healthy as ever with close to 900 Auskickers braving the cold each Saturday morning across the Riverina highlighting the strength of AFL in the region and the bright future ahead. The ‘new and improved’ Auskick philosophy of smaller groups, more activities and increased parent involvement has been well implemented. All coordinators and parents involved should be congratulat-ed for their hard work in maintaining this integral part of the footy pathway. Footy at the grass roots level will continue to tick over in Term 3 with 6 After School Auskick Centres popping up around the region and our Wagga & District Youth Girls competition and Girls Only Auskick just around the corner.

Marrar v Temora
The reigning premiers have quickly asserted themselves as the in form team of the compe-tition after rattling off four straight wins while Temora are back on the winners board after a disappointing loss to the Blues two weeks ago. There’s a size disparity between opposing key forwards Matt Harpley and Zach Walgers but they remain damaging in their own ways as they currently sit third and fourth on the goal kickers list respectively. Hard to see this game blow-ing out to any more than four goals but Marrar should be too good at home
Marrar by 22
CSU v East Wagga Both CSU and East Wagga will be looking to bounce back after disappointing performances in round 13. The Hawks were undermanned but would have still fancied themselves as chances against the Two Blues, while the Bushpigs were a fair way off the mark from the team that lost to the Saints by only two points back in round four. Much of this games competitiveness will be based on how many of the Hawks walk up starters return from injury but either way, East Wagga should be too good to overcome at this stage of the year.
East Wagga by 34
Barellan v Coleambally
After a long season, Barellan finally added to their tally of premiership points – albeit with a draw against East Wagga – and have shown the ability to remain within the fight against whoever they’ve faced. The Two Blues sole victory this season came at the expense of a Blues side that will be fresh and ready to resume momentum after a big win against Temora in round 12. Two very well matched teams but Coly have shown to have a higher ceiling, and will get one back against the home side.
Coleambally by 18
TRYC v North Wagga
A must-win game for The Rock as a loss to the Saints will all but shut the door on any faint finals aspirations for the Magpies. North Wagga outlasted Tom Yates’ squad in a low scoring hit out at McPherson Oval back in round five and the Magpies possess the talent and determina-tion to make this another slugfest, but whether they have the firepower to extend any lead re-mains to be seen. The hosts will keep it close but I’d expect a similar result as the last meeting.

RFNL SENIOR FOOTY PREVIEWS
Leeton-Whitton v MCUE
When it rains it pours, and that seems to be the case for the Leeton-Whitton Crows whom after a maiden win two rounds ago backed it up with a shock victory against reigning pre-miers Collingullie. Daniel Muir has seemed to have found some rhythm with his young side and they’ll have to continue that momentum against a Mangoplah team looking to recapture the form that put them into finals contention. A dark horse for match of the round, the Go-annas should prove a cut above but the Crows have proven everyone wrong before.
MCUE by 6
Turvey Park v Coolamon
If Turvey Park fancy themselves as outside finals chances, then they must make a statement against the Hoppers at home on Saturday. While Coolamon’s best is arguably the best in the competition, they haven’t shown the ability to consistently put games out of reach and against a resilient team like the Bulldogs that could be costly, as it nearly did in their 15 point win back in round four. The Bulldogs have all the makings of a formidable team once their juniors grow more accustomed to senior footy but Coolamon remain too good at the moment.
Coolamon by 28
Narrandera v Wagga Tigers
Whatever momentum the Narrandera Eagles seemed to have had earlier in the year has since dissipated after a series of big losses and unfor-tunately it doesn’t get any easier at home this week. The Wagga Tigers are riding high after a fifth straight win, show no signs of stopping and will see this as a good opportunity to get accustomed to the finals venue of Narrandera Oval. The run and carry of the Tigers should be far too much to match for the home side and that will be reflected on the scoreboard in a big win for the league leaders.
Wagga Tigers by 60
GGGM v Collingullie GP
Ganmain and Collingullie met in the finals last year but if the Demons don’t find some form quickly its very possible that only the Lions will have a crack at September football in 2019. Collingullie has been lacking forward line pow-er of late and the Lions will be looking to give themselves more scoring options than what was presented against the Tigers last week. At this stage of the year, Ganmain look more comfortable in their style of football while the Dees have been chopping and changing all year. Familiarity reigns supreme and the home side bounce back in a close one.

Meg ReinholdMeg’s experience and knowledge of the A grade standard is impeccable and very valued for a 20 year old. She has played over 78 games in A grade, played in the representa-tive side and has been selected in the team of the year for 2 years running. Meg is a very controlled and clean center court player who has a very good eye for the ball with her goal assists and court plays. Her ability to deny and dictate play in defense is incredible and can be very unpredictable by her opponents.

IN THE HUNT by Ned Balme
Two years removed from a Grand Final loss to Marrar and five years since their last Farrer League premiership, the Temora Kangaroos were in flux this past off-season.
A handful of considerable departures, a sprinkling of retirements and a late recruiting surge caused for some sleepless nights in the Roos’ camp ahead of the 2019 campaign.
“It’s been a similar situation the last three years to be honest,” assistant coach Luke Gerhard said.
It is hard to retain players and at the back of your mind sometimes you question how you go about keeping players and whether we’re doing the right things.”
The off-season losses of club stalwarts Damien Ponting and Mark Breust, captain Charlie Vallance as well as a throng of versatile talls presented a difficult challenge for the club as they look to not only return to the Grand Final stage but go one better.
“Losing Vallance and picking up (Max) Richardson is a pretty fair swap but to get Matt Harpley back from a knee reco and lose Matt Wallis shows there’s plenty of moving pieces to account for,” Gerhard said.
We’ve done alright and probably a lot better than I thought we were going to do if you look purely at ins and outs that left us scratching our head at the last minute. We’re very fortunate to have that Can-berra connection and young fellas coming through that have stepped in and matured as footballers.”
Despite early reservations, the Roos’ once again find themselves in the top four and well in the hunt for a minor premiership.
“Everyone has lifted here or there or added a different element to their game, which was really im-portant.
Will Reinhold is an absolute gun and Robbie Krause has also really stepped up. He’d probably admit he’s not our most skilful player but he’s bloody tough, does the right things and if you’re asking who will probably win our best and fairest at this stage he has to be right up there.”
Unlike previous years in which the tag of ‘dominant team’ was seemingly passed around on a rotation policy between the likes of Temora, Marrar and North Wagga, Gerhard believes the Farrer League is as wide open as ever for those who have the desire to take it.
“At the start of the year you’d look at East Wagga and think ‘jeez no one is going to beat them’ but they dropped back, Marrar has taken over but we had our patches and so have North Wagga.
Everyone is a contender. Coleambally and Ariah Park at their best are good enough on their day,
The Rock and CSU have pushed teams really close and we saw what Barellan did to East Wagga last week.
This year is really different to other years and you just feel at the business end of the year it’s going to be a case of whoever is on.”
For Temora, this weekend will have a finals feeling.
A win against Marrar will keep them in the hunt for top spot but it isn’t expected to come easily.
“They’re rough on the inside and slick on the outside. We have to match it and no doubt they’ll be one of the biggest tests we’ve had.”

CLUB NOTES:Round 13 saw all three grades of Jets football teams venture to Marrar. The Under 17.5s faced Marrar again, this being the third time in four weeks. After a tight tussle the Marrar side proved too strong and won out. Reserve Grade tried hard all day but between the weather and a stronger Marrar side they went down too. First grade nearly caused an upset, led by Coach Mitch Haddrill, they applied pressure all day and just missed the target. Whilst on the Netball court the Jets had an outstanding day, winning all four matches. Hopefully the bye this week will give everyone a much needed rest and we can come back firing.
