George Raff to Star In Danger Film
Studio Gives Gala Welcome To Victor McLaglen on Return
By Louell. O . Parsons HOLLYWOOD, June 14.
G EORGE RAPT returned from New York without ever having visited a single night spot -not even hla favorite, the Stork Club. That's because he Is so true to Betty Orable, and much
as he loves dancing he didn't go stepping with any other girl. He'll be back a t Warners In six week* and this time there won't be any aquawk out of him. for hel l star In ''Background to Danger" by
Eric Ambler, who Is now serving with the British Commandos. Ambler also wrote "Journey into Pear."
It la just a year since Oeorge and EdÂward O. Robinson staged their front page battle in "Man Power" at Warners, and he hasn't made a picture there since that time. Supporting him in "Background to Danger" will be Sydney Oreenstreet of "Maltese Palcon" fame. Jerry Wald, who will produce the picture, haa handed it to Philip McDonald to write the adaptaÂtion.

When Victor McLaglen stepped on the 20th Century-Fox lot he found a reception committee waiting for him such as he never dreamed had been arranged. Vie waa escorted to his old dressing room In style, photographs were made, speeches of greetings and a real welcome were given to the reÂturned son. He cheeked In to play one of his typical he-man roles In "China Girl." Vic hasn't been near the lot since he left four years ago, after he made "Battle of Broadway** . with Brian Donievy. Before that time Vic and Eddie Lowe, In "CapÂtain Flagg" and "Sergeant Quirk" roles, had made a great name for themselves. Anyhow, he is glad to be
FILMS AND STARS REVIEW
KATHARINE HEPBURN
The Oeorge Sanders marriage mystery has all been cleared op. and by the very pleasant voiced Mrs. Sanders herself, the former Elsie M. Poole, known on the screen as Susan Larson. She tells me that she and George were married Oct. 27, 1940, at the Methodist Church on the corner of Franklin and Highland in Hollywood. She says she is very happily married and that there has never been any talk of divorce. "Just because I am a broad-minded wife," ahe said, "and permit my husband to live his own life is no reason that we are contemplating any sort of separation." There has been so much talk about whether or not Sanders was married that It la very nice to have the mystery cleared up. This is really the first official story of the marriage, George having always refused to make any sort of statement.

The usually amiable Mickey Booney was ready to kill on sight when questioned on the story that he and his bride, the former Ava Gardner, had separated. The story has been going the rounds of Hollywood for some time, with the report that Mickey's friendship with his old music-loving pals had broken • p the marriage. Mickey denied there had been the slightest trouble. He said that his young bride had gone to Raleigh, North Carolina, to see her mother, who has been ill. He said he couldn't go with her because he is working in an "Andy Hardy" picture, so he had sent the wife of Richard Quine with Ava so she wouldn't have to make the trip alone. "I would like to get hold of the person who started a rumor like that," Mickey said.

Chatter in Hollywood: The Douglas Fairbanks, Jrs., are expectÂing a playmate for their little daughter, Daphne, in November. Such a nice letter from Mary Lee. who la at Boxwood Farm, Hot Springs, Va . with her family awaiting Doug's return from active service at sea Mary Lee, who is very brave, hasn't heard a word from Doug since he left for duty. She is praying that he will return by NoÂ
vember, when the baby is expected, but she is more worried for fear he will worry about her than she Is about herself—and I call that being wonderful.

The Letter Box: "May I contribute m e more story to the treasure chest of John Barrymore's wit?" writes Kenn Chavelle from Camp Roberts. "I once asked Barrymore if he was writing his life story. No,' said John, I'm living it."' "Only Katharine Hepburn should play the role based on Amelia Ear hart's life," writes Alice Guest. "Hepburn even looks like the great Earhart— freckles and all." Personal to Private Jack BAIT, Fort Jackson, S. C : The best reason I can think of why Myrna Loy didn't send you that autographed picture right away Is because your "dream girl" is honeymooning with John Herts, Jr. "I'm an amateur photographer," says Alice Newsome, Hollywood, "but not so much of an amateur that I didn't get the enclosed good shot of Jane Russell and James Craig. I bet not everybody who gives you news about a Hollywood twosome can prove it with a picture of them together." I bet they cant either, Alice. Jane and Jimmy certainly can't deny your
"evidence" that they look very happy together. "If Warners really want a Maxine Elliot there is only one—Kay Francis!" suggests F. A. N. "No cutie should play the role of this beautiÂful woman. Miss Frances has the beauty and the dignity and the ability for the part" . . . Robert Manheimer, New York, has an idea: "Now that 'Yankee Doodle Dandy,' based on the life of tieorge M. Cohan, is such a hit, why don't the movies follow with life stories based on the life and careers of such men as Irving Berlin and Cecil De Mille?" It's a good idea, Robert, but it isn't all beer and skittles making movies about living men.

Snapshots of Hollywood Collected at Random: The rumor that Norma Shearer and Marty Arrouge are already wed is being circulated in Hollywood. Errol Flynn is buying Madeleine Le Beau lunch every day at the Warner commissary. Glnny Simms and Edgar Bergen have rediscovered each other. Rochester will name his baby Jack Benny Anderson if it's a boy, if it's a girl Jacqueline Benny Anderson. Ned Washington, composer of "When You Wish Upon a Star" and other hit tunes, will wed Zoe Alyn the 20th. They are receiving congratulations at Slapsy Maxle's. Kathryn Grayson and John Shelton kissed and made up and then left on a bond-selling tour. Joan Crawford hosted a birthday party for Christina, who is three. Tony Quinn checks into the hospital the moment he finishes i'The Black 8wan," to get rid of a bad case of flu. Damon Runyon Is tossing a party for the cast and crew of "Big Street" at Mike Lyman's. Craig Reynolds, who was stationed In Iceland for a time, is now a lieutenant In the Marines. Eva Gabor and Jack Tavelman a Mocambo twosome. Jerry Baker of Club Caravan, New York, says: "We say it over even if redundantly—we ask you to buy bonds a-bond-antly."

By Mildred Martin Any time material runs low or a
producer can lay hands on a couple of husky actors itching for a»fight, there's always "The Spoilers" to turn to. The current version of the Rex Beach novel which landed a t the Stanton on Saturday is the third since William Fa m u m and Tom SanUchl fought their epio battle in t h e 1014 silent picture and this time Parnum, as Lawyer Wheaton, looks on while such reasonably young sprouts as John Wayne and RanÂdolph Scott slug it out for title to the Midas mine and the heart of an Alaskan siren, played in the Mae Westian manner by Marlene DietÂrich.
Dated, we're afraid, Is the word for "The Spoilers," and the fact that Alaska has been hitt ing the headÂlines does nothing to alter the case. Just why Prank Lloyd chose to reÂmake the yarn is one of those screen mysteries. For neither Marlene's wiles nor the final knock-down-drag-out fight succeed in injecting life into material that has long since lost Its Interest. STORY IS CHANGED
On this occasion, the script writers have taken all sorts of liberties with the original story. Not that It m a t Âters, but i t does have the effect of leaving some characters rather pointlessly at loose ends.
For instance, Richard Barthel-
mess' Broncho Kid nurses a bad case of unrequited love for La Dietrich and lets It go at that; whereas it was Beach's own little surprise twist to reveal him as brother of Helen Chester, female member of the "Spoiler" outfit which brought its own version of the law to poor old Nome.
The famous slotting fight is still rough, tough and deadly enough to have sent both Wayne and Scott to the hospital for repairs. But until they start letting their fists fly. the actors go wearily through the mske-
believe of claim-jumping and paying court to Marlene in her feathers, furbelows and Oibson Olrl coiffures Whst humor there is, is forced and just about as artificial as the perÂformances. In one brief, startling se Âquence, Robert W. Service, poet laureate of the Yukon, turns up to explain tartly that he's writing T h e Shooting of Dan McOrew," not a poem to Marlene.
The cast includes Samuel S Hinds as the crooked judge, Margaret Lindsay as his niece and Harry Carey, as Wayne's knowing partner.
