For many of us, Troy is the backdrop to Homer's epic poem, the Iliad. But the site ofTroy was occupied from the 4th millennium B.C. From the first village created by Ilos -the ancient King of Troy - to the great Greek city, Troy experienced many wars, fires andearthquakes, as well as several phases of great prosperity. Traces of these have beenfound by archaeologists. Although Homer drew on reality to write the famous war of Troy,the historical accuracy of the facts of the Iliad remains unconfirmed. How much is mythand how much reality? But despite these questions, Troy remains one of the most strikingcities of our collective imagination. The Greeks of Antiquity were fascinated by the funeralceremonies Homer described. They drew on them in minute detail for their own funerals,which contributed to making the Homeric legend a reality.
