Before the end of World War II and the fall of
Mussolini's Fascist regime a different genre of Italian
cinema called Neorealism emerged. The movement
began in 1942 and went on in the 50s

Neorealism cinematic realism with
social, political, and economic themes. Films
often took a highly critical view of Italian
society and focused attention upon glaring
social problems, such as the effects of the
Resistance and the war, poverty,
unemployment, friendship and love.
Topical scripts inspired by concrete evens,
Common people are the protagonists.
Actors are often nonprofessionals. As for the
technics there is a massive use of free camera.
Filmed in black and white the films have a
haunting quality, with deep shadows and sharp
edges echoing not only the harshness of life
during the post-war years, but the emotions of
the characters themselves.

FUNCTIONALISM
Functionalism, in
architecture, is the
principle that
architects should
design a building
based on the purpose
of that building.
Functionalism in architecture can
never be pure functionalism.
'The absolute rejection of style, becomes itself a form of style'. Philosopher Adorno concludes
Functionalism considered
families, schools and other
social entities as cogs in a
machine.
Each part contributes to the
functioning of the system as
a whole.
Their collective utopia
rejected "elegant"
architecture as bourgeois.

*The emblematic date of ‘1956’ (the riot
and invasion of Soviet in Hungary) is seen
as the commencement of a new period
in Italian literary history. The very rapid
expansion of the Italian economy in the
‘boom years’ (1958–63), the new levels
of prosperity and choice, and the effect
which these had on the social and
material conditions of literature.
Two main factors affected these changes:
- the extension of educational and
cultural opportunities to a larger
number of people;
- the insertion of publishing in a complex
web of ‘cultural industries’.
Il conformista, 1951
Il disprezzo, 1954
La ciociara, 1957
La noia, 1960
