An amazing part of Chinese traditional culture, it is defined as “The beauty of divine be- ings dancing”. At our last meeting, we all enjoyed a presenta- tion on Shen Yun, including video clips of the dancing, given by Lucy Lui and her assistant Bridgette. The dancing, choreogra- phy and the artwork for the backdrops were amazing. I un- derstand this dancing has been in China for thousands of years, but is now banned since China became communist. A sad loss for the Chinese people. Lucy also spoke about the plight of Falun Gong in China, which originated from Buddhism and teaches truthfulness, tolerance and compassion. Falun Gong is also outlawed by the Com- munist regime in China, because they saw this movement as a threat. More about Lucy’s presentation later in this bulletin. Stephen Teh, a Rotarian from the Dromana club, joined us for the meeting, as well as partners Joy Lea and Shirley Frewen. In fact we had more members and guests than we expected for the meeting and there was a mad scramble to find enough chairs for everyone! It was another good meeting and a great turn up considering the weather! If you get a chance, you should checkout the website “Rotary giving hub”, which was set up by PDG Dick Garner and the Hampton Rotary club. This website provides a means for the public to make donations online to any Rotary project. Heather Chisholm has done an excellent job as our “BRAGG Queen”, including the recent golf weekend at Cape Schank. A great time was had by all according to the feedback from those attending. Well done Heather and a big thank you from all our golfers for all the work you have put into organis- ing our golf events. A reminder to everyone about our Changeover night, which will be held on 27th of June. Greg will be checking for at- tendees soon. Next meeting is again at VGC, where our own David Lea will be letting us all know where we are at with our website and other internet matters. Stay safe everyone. Support Community Theatre for a Fun Night Out MLOC Produc- tions is staging ‘BIG- The musi- cal’ at the Phoenix Theatre 14th-22nd June. This show is a Musi-cal comedy based on the 1990s Tom Hanks movie "BIG" about a boy who would like to be grown up. One for all the fami- ly!. MLOC is a local community Theatre group that takes pride in creating op-portunities for amateur actors whilst providing the community with top class professional performances; A great night out at the Thea- tre without pay-ing city centre prices! Information and bookings can be made at www.mloc.org.au

District Assembly Seven members, Malcolm Sawle, Chris D’Arcy, Rob Fen-ton, Trish Smyth, Tony McKenna, Martin Fothergill and Bob McArthur attended the 2013 District Assembly at Deacon University last Sunday. The format has changed considerably with less than an hour of formalities before the attendees broke into cluster groups. Each group had two facilitators and the A.G. and spent the morning going through the Club Resource Guide, a well put together summary of all Rotary projects, pro-grams and timelines. A much improved day with the focus on outcomes.

Mental Health First Aid Workshop On page 4 you will find a flyer for the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) workshop that our club is organising on the 4th and 5th July 2013. The concept of mental health first aid workshops has been around for a couple of years, and has been strongly supported by Australian Rotary Health. This workshop is part of our club's approach to tackling the issues of mental health in our community The workshop is open to anyone with an interest in better recognising mental health issues and what ac-tions they should take if faced with a mental health situation. No prior training or knowledge is re-quired. Our club is offering the workshop to both individuals and organisations. The costs are very reasonable, being subsidised with a grant from the Bayside City Council. Please circulate this flyer to anyone you feel may be interested or benefit from attending, our own mem-bers and/or family included. Numbers will be lim-ited to around 20 and we need to have final num-bers by the third week of June. This project requires very little additional hands-on support from members but does need your full sup-port in promoting it. Not only is it a good project but it is also a good project for the club to be seen doing.

This Week’s Speaker; Lucy Liu Topic; Renaissance of Traditional Chinese Culture Lucy Liu was born in the beautiful city of Urum-qi, which is one of Chi-na’s most important cit-ies open to the outside world. Urumqi is home to forty of China’s eth-nic groups. The rich and varied cultures and cus-toms of the different ethnic groups have added spe-cial charm to her home town. Lucy holds a Bachelor of Computer Science degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, which is ranked in the top 10 universi-ties in China. In September 1993 Lucy was the Editor of Science Press in Beijing, which is the biggest science books publisher in Mainland China and remained there till January 1999 when she left for Australia to join her husband already in Melbourne. She has two children born in Melbourne - a girl 13 and a boy 9. Since coming to Melbourne in1999 she joined Atex, a leading international software company selling solutions for media-rich industries. She has been with them for more than 13 years and is currently a Sen-ior Test Analyst and Assistant Manager in the Quali-ty Assurance Department. Lucy was inducted into Rotary Club of North Balwyn in May 2012, and remaining as an active member. She is also the Editor and Non Executive Director of The Epoch Times newspaper in Melbourne in a volun-teer capacity since 2003. The Epoch Times is the first non-for-profit newspaper in Australia. It is a free independent newspaper of journalistic integrity, with reporters from 35 countries published in 21 languages on line and 12 in the print edition. Freedom of the press and humanity are the foundations of The Epoch Times, which began from a great need to provide uncensored news about China. Lucy introduced the Shen Yun theatre group to the members. Founded in 2006 by a group of leading classical Chinese artists this New York based group aims to preserve the 5000 year old traditions of

classical Chinese dance. Over the past 60 years the Chinese Government has treated these tradi-tional arts as a threat to their ide-alogy and they have been all but eliminated from modern China. Lucy is banned from returning to China for her work in support of freely reporting Chinese news. The Shen Yun dancers learn based on a classical style incorporating technical skill, form and bearing. The dancing emphasises curves not straight lines as in western ballet.

Lucy illustrated her talk with a number of short vide-os demonstrating the beauty of the dance and the music. You can see these for yourself at

http://www.shenyunperformingarts.org/about

Despite its short history Shen Yun has achieved a re-markable success. They now have three companies continually touring the world and receiving rave re-views for their spectacular performances. They will be coming to Melbourne again in Autumn 2014.

Moai, Easter Island Photograph by Randy Olson, National Geo-graphic Their backs to the Pacific, 15 restored moai stand watch at Ahu Tongariki, the largest of Easter Is-land's ceremonial stone platforms. Rapanui arti-sans carved the moai cen-turies ago from volcanic rock at a quarry a mile away. By the 19th century all of Easter's moai had been toppled—by whom or what is unclear. In 1960 these moai were swept inland by a tsuna-mi, which fractured some (left).
