EVENTSPARENT TEACHERS MEET

July 7, 2018Parent Teachers Meet explores opportunities for active discussions to ensure the child stays active both socially and academically. Active talks between the school and the parents are crucial for the developmental years of the child. The common misconception that the child learns everything about life and his surroundings at school cannot be any farther from the truth. Children adapt to everything they see, right from the interactions between their parents, friends, teachers, and characters of their favorite shows. It is therefore vital to create a healthy environment for children with meaningful interactions.

The first PTM of the academic year at Birla Open Minds was conducted on the 7th of July from Grades

MUN WORKSHOPJuly 9 to 12, 2018The ultimate goal of education is to be in a position to give back to the world we live in. Every detail in every subject eventually makes us capable of playing out our chosen roles in the society. The world is always in need of enlightened individuals who can bring the dawn of hope and endless possibilities for the future. Culture, climate, and socio-economic policies have a significant impact on the development of a nation. It becomes the responsibility of the developed countries to help the underdeveloped ones. The idea of being a world citizen must be imbibed in students right from their schooling days. Model United Nations provides the right arena to achieve the ideology.

Birla Open Minds invited Ms. Nidhi Rao, a BBA LLB student who has attended various MUNs across India for six years beginning from 2012,

1 to 11. Time slots were assigned to parents by the class teachers to streamline the PTM process and make the discussion efficient. While queries on academic performance and conduct in the class were the core discussion topic, the emphasis was on improvement and enhancement strategies for each child.

for a three-day workshop to train our students with the nitty-gritty of the MUN. The workshop began on the 9th of July and continued till the 12th.

On day 1, students were introduced to the idea of studying to understand a problem. Debates and discussions remain as the best tool to find solutions to a problem but the critical aspect to be considered to solve any given problem is the understanding that it exists by way of research and analysis.

Day 2 began with playing out a mock set-up of MUN. The concept of a MUN meet is significant as it helps the participants to become fully aware of the way the UN functions. The session began with standard procedure and roll call. The roll call started by saying present (can vote) and not present (cannot Vote). The second part observed a formal and an informal session. The Chair asks for the General Speakers List. After the GSL, the Chair asks for the motion on the topic by which the delegates raise subtopics on the

main subject.

There are two caucuses, moderated or unmoderated. It is an integral part of the Model UN simulation because it provides an opportunity for delegates to collaborate, negotiate and formulate draft resolutions. When a committee holds a moderated caucus, the Chair calls on delegates one at a time, and each speaker briefly addresses the committee. During an unmoderated caucus, the committee breaks for a temporary recess from formal proceedings so that delegates can work together in small groups. A delegate must make a motion to hold a caucus, and the committee must pass the motion.

Many delegates prefer to speak during a moderated caucus rather than being placed on the speaker’s list. In a moderated caucus, speakers are usually able to convey one or two key points to the entire committee or share new ideas that have developed through the course of the debate. A delegate sometimes chooses to make a motion for a moderated caucus if his or her name is close to the end of the speakers’ list. By speaking in a moderated caucus, delegates can address the committee much earlier.

To help the students understand the procedure, delegates were selected and assigned a nation each. They were asked to list their thoughts on Women. The delegates were given 15 to 20 minutes to understand the status of the Women in their own country and note down the valid points to address the gathering. The delegates were given 90 sec each to deliver the views about the rights of women in their nation. The speaker gave a chance to all the General speakers.

Day 3 was about understanding the procedures to be followed while researching a crisis. The delegates came to know the General Information of the

different committees and UN Charter along with the Websites for research. The delegates understood the UN Member nations and their way of participation in the UN. They learned more about the Agenda and its background information for the MUN. There are about 193 Full pledged Nations in the UN which have three years term for the next members to be appointed to discuss different aspects of the Global Issues. The delegates also learned about the Functional committees and specialized agencies to know while preparing for the MUN. They handled Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals.

The CSR (Corporate Social Responsibilities) has had an enormous impact on the Sustainable Development Goals in the present century. The Public and private sectors work hand in hand for attaining the Sustainable Development Goals.

Day 4, the final session witnessed an informed discussion with our students Adwaith, Adith, Ashish, and Ikjot. It was a unique learning experience for them. The facilitator exclusively discussed and explained the agenda of the Committee and the stand of the Country. She helped them to draft the resolution by describing how to write and research the topics. Students interacted with her and clarified all the doubts.

She also provided all possible solutions to the transitional phase of different countries, and their country stands on various issues.

The four-day training was beneficial for the students as some of them represented the school in two MUNs and brought home laurels.

PARENTS’ DAY CELEBRATIONSJuly 21, 2018

Parents are the first information we perceive, upon our arrival to this world. We imitate them, enact their actions and spend every growing year of our lives striving to be more and more like them. We let our trust reside in them and knowing that they are out there as the guiding stars giving us a sense of irreplaceable joy. Love, kindness, and gratitude are just some of the emotions we learn to master from our parents.

Globe Tot’ers, Kollur celebrated Parents’ Day on the 21st of July with much fanfare. ‘Spring Splash’ was the theme, and the whole school was decorated with cutouts of flowers, butterflies, paper fans, and creepers. The parents and children

July 22, 2018Delhi School of Excellence, Manikonda had organized an inter-school talent fest on the 22nd of July titled DESAFIO II.

Desafio is a Portuguese word which means ‘Challenge,’ and very much like what it means, students of Birla Open Minds faced the best of the best from 15 schools across Hyderabad that participated in the event in twelve events across three categories.

The sub-junior category had recitation, singing, story-writing and flower bouquet making competitions. While the junior category had a dance, quiz, poster-making and Nukkad Natak, the senior category had monologues, skits, negative sales pitch and mask making competitions. Students of Birla Open Minds participated in all the competitions.

Our students won the second prize for skit and story-writing and third prize in the singing competition and Nukkad Naatak.

It was well-organized and a delightful event.

Students of the Primary Years participated in the Songaana Competition at DESAFIO II, Delhi School of Excellence, Manikonda and won the Third prize for the event.

IN FOCUS

‘Gratitude’ An ‘Attitude’

Our soul is light. The air around us infused us with life. Water became our life force. Fire became our ex-pression and Earth became our body. We are eternally thankful to our birth parents for bringing us to this beautiful blue world. Without them, we can’t exist. Nothing would exist. All our marvels and our pride finds its inspiration from the fact that we exist and we exist because of our parents. While parents stand tall as the living factors for our existence, it is the non-living elements that we genuinely need to be thankful for in the beginning there was only light. From light came everything else. From light came the marvelous of all living creations ‘Plants.’ Trees, plants, herbs and shrubs are so out of this world that they still retain their connection with ‘Light.’ Through this light, they bring wonders of all kinds and nature to this blue planet of ours’. Without the green-cover, ours would just have been another of the billions of lifeless planet in the Milkyway. Rising global temperatures, urbanization, and alarming pollution levels are threatening this benevolent green entity. If this world is ours to keep we have failed to realize that it is not possible without protecting the vegetation. At Birla Open Minds, we believe that Gratitude is what makes us Human. Children must learn to be thankful for the world they live in. This world needs enlightened individuals who can undo centuries of environmen-tal atrocities. Birla Open Minds celebrated Van Mahotsav on the 13th of July, to express our Gratitude towards Mother Nature for all that she has done and keeps doing for us.

Our Planet might appear blue from space, but it’s the color green that brings delight to the eyes. Blue and Green are eternally related to life. Where there is water, there is a chance of living. Rising global temperatures and increased pollution have threatened the very life of this planet. Urbanization has caused the downfall of the average number of green covers across any given city. Vanmahotsav is an initiative that helps to solve the problem.

Van Mahotsav is the annual celebration of life that exists because of the trees by sowing more as a gesture of gratitude. Birla Open Minds celebrated Van Mahotsav by inviting the students to plant and raise saplings across the campus. One by one, students from K1 to Grade 11 were encouraged to make their bid to fill the soil with life. Students were made aware of the threat that looms over us from industrialization to urbanization and how sowing saplings and tending to them is the only way to save the world.

At Globe Tot’ers, Kollur, the kids spent an entire week discussing the uses of trees, saving the green by practicing related rhymes. Kids came dressed in shades of green and brown. K1 students sowed mustard seed in paper cups as take away. K1 and K2 kids planted saplings in the school garden. Later in the day, the teachers performed a skit titled ‘The Giving Tree.’
