■ White Flag can indicate surrender or a call for a parley or a truce

■ A flag at half-mast shows respect for a loss

■ A flag flown upside down indicates distress (maybe that’s why some people do it when the Springboks are playing – inadvertently I hope!) especially for a ship or boat at sea

In my yacht racing youth flags combined with starting gun signals were used as time indicators and the flag was hoisted if a boat crossed the line ahead of the starting gun – it stayed hoisted until the offending boat came back to restart.

So, at sea flags were doubly important and one of the most famous was Nelson’s signal as his fleet sailed into the Battle of Trafalgar.

“England expects every man to do his duty”

Four years earlier Nelson also famously turned a blind eye to a signal to withdraw from the naval battle of Copenhagen where, having persuaded a dithering Admiral to attack and surprising the Danish fleet by attacking the ‘wrong way’ through shoals and heavy currents, his Admiral signalled ‘Cease Action’ when he thought the fighting had got too hot.

“But Nelson, knowing that to break off at such a moment would be disastrous disregarded it, symbolically putting

Where do the months go to? Its nearly holiday time; a time to sit back relax; enjoy seeing friends you have been meaning to contact all year; a time to really connect with your children; a time to recharge your batteries so that you can face another frenetic year so make the most of this special time and enjoy!

Sitting on the StoepThe other day we were sitting on the Stoep (with the requisite glass of red wine) talking about flags. There was a little breeze blowing the new bright green leaves of the Cordia caffra and the moving branches reminded us of moving flags. I am on my fourth National Flag sitting in South Africa. In the 30s through the 50s we had two flags, the Union Jack and the old South African flag; the Union Jack was then discarded and we had only one flag; when we moved to Mafikeng for 20 years we had the Bophuthatswana National Flag and then we got our fourth very recognisable flag for the newly all-inclusive South Africa.

There are always sectors of the community that have wanted something else so National flags tend to be both unifying and divisive.

But, leaving politics out of it, there’re a whole host of meaningful flags which have governed our lives – mostly having international meanings.

Dear Friends

The terrible heat and drought Gauteng has been experiencing must be very debilitating. May El Nino hurry up and move away. My wish for you is lots of rain and pleasant cool days as Christmas draws nigh.

Famous flags and famous signals – there is a whole world out there!

Birds, Beasties, Trees, Updates and Important ThingsNews from Wim Spronk

The Barn Swallows are back. Once again they have completed the long flight from Europe, Russia and as far North as Siberia.

While they are here they spend the night in different reed beds and often extreme numbers will congregate in one particular location. Such a location used to be Rosherville Dam near Germiston and members of the Witwatersrand Bird Club would go out on specific days during summer to ring the swallows.

We would put up about 100m of mist nets at about 4 o’clock usually on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and then wait for the swallows to arrive. And arrive they did! From all over the Witwatersrand small flocks would come flying in and start their display flight which would attract other flocks and it wasn’t long before the sky was almost black with swallows. They would zig zag and shoot up and down and it was always a mystery how they never flew into each other. Then …..as if at a predetermined moment they would dive straight down into the reeds. Watching this, one could understand how many years ago, people (Aristotle included) believed that swallows spent the winter hibernating in the mud). We would never catch those that dived straight down but not much later the late comers would come in flying low and straight into the nets. It was not unusual to catch between 300-500 swallows in one

night. Among them there were birds bearing rings from the London Museum, Moscow and even Siberia. Birds ringed by us were also often reported back from various localities.

I don’t know if Rosherville Dam still attracts the Barn Swallows. Apparently there is a reed bed near Durban where they gather in their millions and it certainly is a sight worth seeing.

Lex van Vught sent this amazing picture after your devastating hail storm – it looked as though it had snowed on the Golf Course and gardens were devastated. It seems that it is either a feast or famine!

Nature’s True Colours What a good time to win the competition. Now you can buy Mummy a Christmas present – or maybe spend on yourself! Franek is the lucky winner this month.

Crackerjack Nelson “He standeth in stone Aloft and alone, Riding the sky With one arm and one eye” Robert Bridges

Is this the man from whom the phrases “turning a blind eye” and “nailing your colours to the mast” were coined? Nelson certainly put it all into practice and we still use these phrases today.

Remember in this time of drought we can all do our bit to help and the Nature Association definitely plays a role by showing how natural bush and trees can survive heat and lack of water. Support them!

I know we are very lucky!

What kind of plants are growing in your garden?

Property MattersAll your property related questions answered

The Alien and Invasive Species Regulations (AIS) came into effect, on the 1st October 2014. The legislation covers a variety of fauna and flora. In terms Regulation 29(3) a duty is imposed on the seller of any immovable property to notify the Purchaser in writing, before the conclusion of the sale agreement, whether there are any of the listed invasive species on the property.

Invasive alien plants (IAPs) pose a direct threat not only to the biodiversity, but also to water security, the ecological functioning of natural systems and the productive use of land.

They intensify the impact of fires and floods and increase soil erosion. IAPs can divert enormous amounts of water from more productive uses and invasive aquatic plants, such as water hyacinth affect agriculture, fisheries, transport, recreation and water supply. It is estimated that invasive plants cover about 10% of the country.

It would not be practical to add a clause to an agreement of sale, due to the fact that the declaration must be in writing and be made before the conclusion of the sale. It is however recommended that the following is added to the Seller’s declaration: The Seller is aware of any

invasive species on the property as defined in the Alien and Invasive Species Regulations: YES / NO

If a permit-holder sells the property on which a specimen of an alien or listed invasive species is under the permit-holder’s control, in terms of Regulation 29 (1) and 29 (2) the new owner is obligated to also apply for a permit which will be on the same conditions as the previous permit, unless specific circumstances require the conditions to changed.

Invasive alien plants are divided into four categories – Category 1a (newly emerging invasive requiring immediate control), Category 1 b (widespread invasive which must be controlled and ideally removed from properties), Category 2 (species requiring permits) and Category 3 (species which may remain in place but further trading, propagation or planting is prohibited).

The list of IAP’S can be found in the Government Gazette volume No 37886, published the 1st August 2014. The document contains an extensive list and we advise that Sellers do due diligence and determine the existence of any of these plants in their gardens before preparing to sell.

South Africa celebrated National Invasive Species Week, in the month of October, the celebration was aimed at raising awareness on the 559 plants and animals that need to be regulated and controlled in the country.

Decorating the tree and house for Christmas with beautiful decorations It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas, but is your home decorated yet? If not, don’t fret – you still have lots of time – although now is a good time to work on your collection of Christmas items that will eventually form part of your decor. You might even find some of these in your own garden!

Interior Ideas

continue on page 16

If you’re like some people, you may stroll the stores to see the newest theme in holiday decorating and perhaps add to your decor from years past. If you’re really creative, you can transform some of your older decor into newer treasures by using a bit of imagination – a can of spray

paint here, a new ribbon there… whatever the case may be, know that your decorating theme should suit your style.

This article is devoted to imaginative and creative ideas for your home, no matter what your taste – Traditional, French, Country, Contemporary, Modern or downright

Eclectic – there’s a little bit of something for every style of decorating!

Don’t be afraid to tie in your Christmas decorating with your home’s everyday decor, i.e., pick up the colours in your curtains or upholstered furniture – don’t just follow trends. For example, if your decor is based on white or ivory tones, you may want to compliment it with tiny white lights, flowers, cream coloured candles and natural greenery. Perhaps you may want to add crystal or glass ornaments to give your decor extra sparkle. If your decor is in the earth tones, you may want to accent

with copper and bronze ornaments. If your tendency is toward jewel toned fabrics – emerald green, ruby red, gold, dark purple and sapphire blue ornaments will all complement your theme. And remember, it’s nice to have a colour scheme, but don’t be afraid to add a piece or two that are a little different from your theme – either in colour or style – this will promise to add a touch of whimsy to your decor.

For those of you with a fireplace, your mantels will become the centre of your decor – there are many

Interior Ideascontinued from page 16

factors to keep in mind – texture, colour, balance and style of the mantel.

For a contemporary look – use repetition and symmetry (odd numbers of objects work best). Use simple objects and repeat them several times. For example, you may want to place 3 ivory votive candles in between 5 topiary trees tied with simple silver, red or green ribbon.

For a country look to your mantel – gather some branches – stand branches up in narrow vases or lay them on the mantel, layering them so that the cut ends show as little as possible. Hang ornaments on them and complete with natural greenery such as pine and moss, pine cones, grapevine balls and intertwine with tartan ribbon.

Traditional mantelpieces look beautiful either swaged or layered with natural greenery, traditional ribbons and bows in satin, velvet or taffeta, mini white lights or ivory votives.

Tip: Don’t try to put everything on your mantel. Pick a theme and stick to it!

Here are a few simple holiday dinner table ideas you may want to try:

Fill a glass bowl with water, add cranberries and floating candles or tea lights and voila, you have a festive and elegant, yet easy-to-make centrepiece that will not get in the way of your guest’s view of each other while enjoying their dinner.

Tie name tags with festive ribbon or raffia to gold or silver spray-painted pine cones or Christmas ornaments and use as place cards at your dinner table.

Adorn a simple chandelier with ropes of gold, silver or red beads and attach drop crystals (available at your local lighting stores). Scatter the same bead strands or crystals on your dining table.

Fill a clear vase with oasis and add some pine or cedar boughs, seeded eucalyptus, boxwood or holly. Add some specimen flowers – tiger striped amaryllis, paper white narcissus, red or white roses will all look beautiful with the greenery. Finish off the look with beaded jewel ornaments hanging from the greenery tucked in and outside of the clear vase. The flowers will need to be replaced but the rest of your centrepiece will last until the end of the season.

Tip: You can keep the greenery looking fresh all throughout the season by ensuring you cut and soften the stems in warm water before using them. Also, water your arrangement every couple of days.

Take some inexpensive candles and give them an ornate look by puncturing them several times in a random fashion with inexpensive pierced earrings or wrapping them with an inexpensive pearl headband or ribbon. Place the candles in the middle and surround with twigs and natural greenery.

Tip: avoid using scented candles in your centrepiece. Their scents may interfere with the aromas from your holiday kitchen.

Theme trees are still popular – the following exquisite colour combinations are guaranteed to showcase your tree throughout Christmas: white and silver, copper and bronze, burgundy and gold, ivory and gold, jewel tones (emerald green, sapphire blue, gold, red, purple) or all pastels. Mini white lights will look best with all colour combinations with the exception of the jewel tones and pastels, where the traditional multi-coulored lights will work better.

Create a garland using balsam, white pine needles and seeded eucalyptus tied together with thin wire. Gold wire mesh wrapped around the greenery will create a

contemporary look. Magnolia leaves and fresh or dried flowers (dried hydrangeas are a great choice) will add a country flare. For a French Country touch, dried orange slices and glass ornaments will do the trick.

Wondering what to do in your kitchen for Christmas Decor? Sugar oranges or grapefruits and display in a

glass decanter or vase. Replace your soap dispenser with something more elegant – either in silver or gold. Place one or two mini evergreen trees in clay pots (spray painted silver or gold, if you wish) near a doorway and add mini white lights. Tie a ribbon to your pantry door and pin your Christmas cards to it.

For a simple coffee or side table display, colourful glass ornaments in a glass bowl or crystal cake plate with the addition of roped beads or greenery are another great look.

Tip: You needn’t use everything in your Christmas box – your holiday decor doesn’t need to look cluttered. Your objective is to achieve harmony – a look in which everything in the room fits together, like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle – to form a single, pleasing picture.

Tip: For those of you who don’t have a lot of time to spend on your holiday decorating this year, pre-lit trees, wreathes and garlands are all available at your local stores – as we all know, getting the lights on the tree (and ensuring they work) can be the most frustrating part of our holiday decorating!

So as you’re decorating your home for the holidays this year, be creative, have fun and enjoy every moment! Remember; decorate for your lifestyle – not someone else’s – Happy Holidays!

Dainfern Golf

We cannot wait for the sun to set on our fairways so we can kick off an amazing round of Night Golf at Dainfern Country Club.

Ladies Club Championships 2015 It was a very early start on Thursday morning for the ladies that took part in the annual Club Championships for 2015. As the ladies started teeing off, the wind got stronger and stronger. It made scoring very difficult for the ladies and reaching some of the par 5’s in 3 shot impossible. We always knew that the competition would be nice and close and the ladies did not disappoint. After the first rounds in the A-Division Joyce Hughes (86 gross) had a one shot lead over Jo Soeng Ah (87 gross) and followed closely by new member Leslie Grandet on 88 gross. In the B-Division we had a tie at the leader board with both Debbie Retief and Catherine Hewett finishing on 101 after 18 holes. They were followed by Gail Newland, playing in her first Club Championships, on 104 and we had three players on 105 after the first round. Sandy Todd was the first round leader in the C-Division on 31 points, and in second he had Jeanne Nicol on 26 points.

The second round got off on Friday morning at 07h24 off the 1st tee. The second day of Club Championships was

going to be very exciting and the ladies did not disappoint. The Seniors Ladies Club Championships also took place on Friday. The 2015 Senior Champion on 36 points was Maureen Valsecchi and runner up was Diane Hewitt on 34 points. The player’s nerves played a big role during the second round. In the C-Division Sandy Todd finished strong and followed up her 31 points in round 1 with 28 points in the second round. This was enough to secure the 2015 C-Division. Sandy won on 59 pts, followed by Jeanne Nicol on 54 points. The B-Division winner for 2015 went to Catherine Hewett who finished strongly with a 100 gross in the second round to finish with a total of 201 over 36 holes and securing a 3 shot win. Debbie Retief was the runner up with a total of 204 followed closely by Diane Hewitt on 206. Well played ladies.

It was very close in the A-Division with only 3 shots between the top 3. Overnight leader Joyce Hughes didn’t have the best of rounds and finished in 3rd place with a total of 178 gross. Jo Soeng Ah played very solidly and her 89 in the second was good enough for the second place in the A-Division. Leslie Grandet has only been a

Running Club

The sun is up early ...

For more information contact Wendy at [email protected].

This is a great time of the year for runners. The sun is up early, the running season is just picking up and most of you have long December holidays to look forward to.

For some, being out of routine can be an obstacle to good consistent training. This can only be remedied by self-discipline, setting your alarm and getting out there no matter what. You could always try to connect with a local running club if you think you need the motivation. For those of you travelling locally, there is a national listing at www.runnersguide.co.za/Clubs/. Runners are generally a friendly bunch and most clubs would welcome visitors on their runs. You could also look for some local events while you are away – many of the small seaside towns have Christmas Eve or New Year’s runs. You can also check out the Runners World website if you are travelling domestically as any local races will be advertised here www.runnersworld.co.za/events/.

Talking of races, we will be starting our CGA licensing process within the next few weeks, so please look out for e-mails if you are already on the mailing list, or contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in obtaining a license.

There will be no time trials on 16, 23 and 30 December and 6 January. Wishing all our members a blessed festive season.

It was being a runner that mattered, not how fast or how far I could run. The joy was in the act of running and in the

journey, not in the destination. John Bingham

Tennis Update

How time flies ...

Armstrong Tennis Academy (Pty) Ltd • Duane Armstrong 082 456 5441 Professional Tennis Coaching from Beginners to Top National Players

Can you believe that 2015 has almost come to an end? As they say, “time flies when you are having fun”

We all have our ups and downs, may it be in school, business, home, sport field or tennis court. As long as we have more ups, achieving our goals and continuously improving. We all set our goals for 2015 and worked hard towards them. My tennis players certainly worked hard and their progress has been amazing throughout the year.

We have juniors and adults that joined us earlier the year that has never held a racket before and today they are playing matches and loving every minute. Many ladies and men have gotten their husbands and wives involved in tennis and playing every week. I constantly hear how they say that they can’t get enough of tennis and some play 3 to 5 times a week. Kids are learning to play matches and our tournament players are fighting the rankings.

The atmosphere at Dainfern Pavilion with all the courts permanently being busy is absolutely awesome. I am blessed to be part of Dainfern tennis and involved with all the tennis players. There is nothing more rewarding than to see how players improve, reach their goals and having fun.

We had a busy tennis year with the charity event, ladies singles and doubles leagues, fun events, championships and so many ladies joining the ladies league and Tuesday socials.

Tennis is a wonderful sport and hundreds of Dainfern residents are playing tennis on a weekly basis. Looking at the successful year were just had, 2016 is going to be amazing!!

nThe end of the SeasonThe 2015 Season has come to an end. Not only did we have a great year end prize giving thanks to our every loyal sponsor namely Auto & General who kindly offered to treat all our members and their parents to a lovely spit braai after the event.

We had a record attendance this year and every kid received a trophy. Our seniors side were presented with the Auto & general Floating trophy as the best team in the club and the under 9’s the junior club of the year. Each of our 3 sponsors received a framed Dainfern Lions Shirt displaying their corporate logo as well as a plaque visible in the frame with their company logo engraved on it. The 2016 Season’s registration opens on the 4th of January. This year we have made it simple and existing members can register online and new members as well. Visit our website www.dainfernlions.co.za and follow the links

on the home page. To Contract Car & Truck hire, thank you for offering to provide the club with transport to take our under 17’s and seniors to their away games. This is such a blessing as we really struggled this year and often forfeited points as a result of the lack of transport available as well as the cost associated with it. Mark White Nissan played a big role in sponsoring the football clinic during the July school holidays. On behalf of the entire Club we would like to wish each and every one of you a peaceful holiday season, follow us on facebook, be safe wherever you are going and happy holidays.

Entertainment for the kids in the holidays

Recreation

The Joy of Carp Fishing.Carp Fishing in South Africa is probably the most practised freshwater fishing activity. It is a great sport for children and will keep them entertained for hours.

Carp fishing, along with bass and kurper (tilapia) fishing is probably the top freshwater fishing activities that are practised in South Africa. Fishing for Carp is a well organised recreational pass-time and is widely practised as a professional sport. This sport enjoys backing from many companies that are promoting this industry.

Many people are drawn to Carp fishing. These fish get big and the preparation that goes into outwitting an old and sizeable Carp makes the wait for the “big one” worth more than it’s weight in gold. Many people would face the bitter cold of winter, long nights without sleep and all manner of weather conditions, in order to land the big one. Catching a Carp of 10 kilograms or more is what makes the journey a life-long one, and you can be sure that you will always want to go bigger.

The history of Carp and Carp fishing in South Africa is a long one that dates back to the 1700’s when Carp was introduced in South Africa. These carp were sometimes imported illegally. The sport has grown from fishing for food with a simple stick and line, to advanced specimen Carp fishing with specialised rods, reels, feed and terminal tackle.

There are a number of important things to look at when fishing for Carp. The location you intend on fishing, the equipment you want to use, and most importantly the safety and care of the Carp. This must be done in order to protect fishing resources for future generations. This shouldn’t be just for Carp fishing, but for any type of fishing you intend to get into.

Carp fishing has come a long way and this is all the better for these fish. Gone are the days where these fish were

just caught and left on the bank to die. In the last couple of years there has been a huge movement towards the practice of catch and release in South Africa. This practice of catch and release has been good for the fish and for the fishermen alike, as it has insured that the fish that are caught have been getting bigger and bigger.

In South Africa the Carp is widely distributed throughout the country and are found in most dams and rivers and can even be found in a lot of private dams. Choosing where to fish for Carp is easy, as most of the dams will have a good stock of Carp. Locating the Carp in a specific dam is a different thing altogether. There are many ways to locate Carp and visual surveillance is often the best. You can often see Carp jumping out of the water. In shallow water you may see their tails sticking out above the water while feeding. In deeper water you may see bubbles as they are grazing on the bottom of a body of water. Carp can often, like many other fish species, be found close to structure in the water, and they will definitely find a way to wrap your line around any structure they can find when they have been hooked. Proper line strength is highly recommended because of these fish looking for structures to wrap your line around. They truly are dirty fighters.

Carp can be caught with a variety of technique. The carp can be lured in with all types of art-lure such as lead-

heads and even practising Fly fishing with which one can have great success, to traditional angling with corn pips and “mealie-bombs”, to the more advanced specimen Carp fishing techniques.

SECURITY UPDATE

It came under our attention that the ATM’s at The Valley Shopping Village had become a hotspot for card fraudsters. The relative banks immediately took action by deploying an undercover investigation team. Within the week, on the 21st October, two persons responsible for the recent muggings and card theft were arrested and the Centre Management is happy to announce that we have not had a single incident thereafter. We still however urge the public to always be alert at ATM’s and to never accept or even engage in conversation with strangers at these machines as these fraudsters are professionals and very efficient in distracting your attention whilst withdrawing money. Should your card be swallowed by an ATM or stolen remember to alert your bank immediately. Card fraudsters are prevalent and always on the lookout for an easy target.

The Valley Shopping Village and its Centre Management place much importance on shopper safety and centre security have been put on high alert especially over the festive season.

Should you see or hear anything that might be considered suspicious please report it to one of the security guards on site or alternatively contact Centre Management on 011 202 0300.

Estate News

We probably all remember exactly where we were when the heavens opened after weeks and weeks of extreme heat and dry conditions in the middle of November. Unfortunately it was not the soft penetrating rainfall we had been hoping for but a hailstorm of note - flooding homes and leaving damage and destruction in its wake.

Turfnet and the DHA Maintenance team had their work cut out clearing the debris and even assisting residents clearing hail stones blocking entrances to homes and garages.

The DHA have been requesting residents to inform gardeners of the looming water crisis in the country and to instruct staff not to hose down driveways but to sweep up leaves and place them in refuse bags. However driving around the Estate one still regularly sees driveways still being hosed down and leaves swept into stormwater drains.

We urge residents to ensure that stormwater grids in front of driveways are cleared of leaves at regular intervals.

Contractors ShutdownThe DHA would like to remind residents that the Estate will be closed for all construction activities from Friday,11 December 2015 and will re-open for contractors on Monday, 11 January 2016.

Paint IdeasBy Karen Schaefer Louw

www.interior-decor-design.co.za

Let's paint the interior for the Holidays!Painting the interior of your home is an excellent way to bring new life to your rooms and get your home ready for the upcoming holiday season.

Now is the perfect time to get your home ready for the holidays; it will take some time to complete your projects, so it’s best to start planning early. With so many colours to choose from, you can create the perfect colour palette for your decorating style. Painting is by far the most dramatic way to decorate and change the look and feel of your home both on the inside and outside.

continue on page 50

The holidays are fast approaching, so are your holiday visitors. Is your home visitor – ready? If not, there’s still time to do something about it. First you will want to decide on a painting project. There are a few things you’ll need to do before hiring us to put a brush to the wall. One important step to start the process of creating a new look

in your home is to determine what kind of feeling you want to have in the room, or throughout your home. Since the goal is to create an environment right for the holidays you will want to go with warm colours, such as red, orange, yellow or beige. These colours will create a positive and happy mood and add cosy intimacy in large spaces. They

can help warm up a room that has northern or eastern exposure. The cool colours – blues, greens, violets or greys, give a serene feeling and can add spaciousness to small places. The balance between light colours and deep colours should also be considered when choosing your house paint colours.

When we say “painting for the holidays”, we don’t mean murals of Santa or painting the bedrooms red and green. We mean to create a warm environment in which your family and friends will be comfortable. You will want to choose a specific colour scheme that appeals to you and will create the environment you desire. Consider how complex a colour scheme you wish to undertake. Here are three main colour schemes to choose from:

• Monochromatic schemes are based on one hue, which varies in value (lightness and darkness), and saturation (the amount of colour). An example of this is a pale blue with a pure blue and dark blue.

• Analogous schemes combine no more than three similar colours. An example of this is red, orange, and yellow. When trying to pair up different colours in the same area, remember that any two colours side-by-side on the colour wheel will work together. Any three colours side-by-side can be used to create this colour scheme.

• Complementary schemes are based on opposing colours. This scheme offers more contrast and can introduce both warm and cool colours into the area. An example would be a warm yellow wall with deep blue trim. These colours are warm and cool, respectively, but work beautifully to create contrast, depth, and a welcoming environment.

After you’ve read this article, take a look around your house and envision the clean, warm, and inviting home you want for your holiday celebrations.

LED Lights – the new lighting standardWhat if you could cut down your lighting energy consumption by 80-90%, save a great deal of money on your energy bill every month and not have to think about changing a light bulb in your home for several years?

Well, here are some quick facts to help you learn more about the latest generation of LED light bulbs.

LED bulbs can be used in many common fixtures in your home including accent lighting, track lighting, room lighting and outdoor spotlights. They offer many unique money and energy-saving benefits over traditional bulbs.

• Reduced power consumption for lighting. LED bulbs allow major costs savings in the electricity used for lighting, since they use up to 80% less to produce the same amount of light as incandescent and CFL lights.

• Reduced power consumption for cooling. Since LED bulbs emit far less heat than conventional lighting, the power consumed by air conditioners is reduced. This also extends the life of the air conditioning units.

• Exceptionally long lifespan. LED lights can last up to 5 times longer than compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) and much longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. A typical LED light that burns for 8 hours per day can last for about 10 years before it needs changing,

making LED bulbs an ideal choice for hard-to-reach lights.

• Durable. LED lights contain no filaments or moving parts that can be damaged by shock and vibration, making them extremely durable and long-lasting. LED is one of the most stable light sources available.

• Reduced Carbon emissions. LEDs convert up to 80% of energy into light. This dramatically reduces carbon emissions, an environmentally friendly choice for lighting installations.

• Lower Levels of UV and heat. LEDs emit minimal Ultra Violet light (UV). UV light attracts insects and can be harmful to skin, clothing and artwork. Heat emissions are greatly reduced with LED, which means they are cool to touch and perfect for heat sensitive applications.

• No flicker - Instant light. LEDs are free of visible flicker and they produce 100% light instantly from switch on, with none of the warm up time required by fluorescents.

Mokapane Electrical would like to encourage all residents to save energy by converting your normal bulbs to LED and to install geysers switches- Time it and Save it!We also specialise in electrical installations, maintenance, house rewiring, emergency call-outs, security lighting, LED conversions, fault finding, power failures , geysers, pool motors, underfloor heating, generators, UPS systems and Certificates of Compliance. Mokopane Electrical has been servicing Dainfern residents for over 10 years.

Orchids

Orchids in southern AfricaThe orchid family is one of the largest families of flowering plants. It includes over 20 000 species worldwide. Orchids are found throughout the world from the tropics to the subarctic zone. However, the orchid-richest areas are the tropics and subtropics.

Orchids are also well represented in the southern African region; altogether 479 species in 54 genera are indigenous here, of which 65% are endemic. This is almost three times as many orchids grown in Europe.

Orchids are grown in a wide variety of different habitats, including bushveld, savanna, karooid scrub, thorn scrub, fynbos and grassland. As in many other plant groups, the Western Cape is where most of the species occur.

An interesting aspect is the fact that fire stimulates the flowering in a large number of species. The economic uses of orchids are various, but orchids do not play a major role in any ecosystem. For the botanist the orchids are significant, being a highly specialized group in very active evolution. They also display remarkable, complex reproduction and pollination strategies.

There are two main types of orchids, if differentiated according to their growth form.• The ground or terrestrial orchids grow on the

ground in either forest, savanna or grassland (most of our southern African orchids are terrestrial).

• The tree or epiphytic orchids on the other hand grow attached to the bark of a shrub or tree - but are not parasites like the mistletoe.

• Somewhat intermediate is the growth on rocks which is termed epilithic or lithophytic.

Gardening

Hydrangeas Christmas FlowerHydrangeas are commonly known as Christmas flowers in South Africa. The most popular are the big leafed French Hydrangeas and this month they are the pride of the garden as they come into full bloom. There are many varieties to choose from including the new "Endless Summer" variety that is the world’s first repeat flowering hydrangea and a new favourite as it is not without flower throughout the late summer.

How to care for HydrangeasCaring for Hydrangeas is easy. They prefer morning sun or dappled shade all day as long as they get protection from the heat of the day, in a moist but well drained soil. In autumn they turn a lovely golden yellow and then you prune them sparingly in the winter as they flower on old wood from the previous summer.

The colour of the blooms is influenced by the pH of the soil - blue if acid and pink if alkaline. To influence the colour for blue, use Shake and Grow Blue or eggshells in the soil. Acid Compost is also a good way to influence acid soil. To influence pink blooms, fertilize with Shake and Grow Pinkor add Agricultural lime.

All Hydrangeas appreciate a little extra effort when they are first brought home. Although most will tolerate some neglect, they do best in a well-prepared garden bed. Dig

the hole at least 2 times the size of the original pot. Mix 1 part compost or Acid compost to the excavated soil with a handful oforganic pellets, insert the plant, mound the soil slightly and soak well.

Doctor, Doctor!Although hardy and relatively disease free there are a few things that can hamper the performance of your Hydrangeas. The most frequently beige yellow leaves. This is because Hydrangeas are susceptible to iron chlorosis. In contrast to nitrogen deficiency, which is expressed as general yellowing of old leaves; iron chlorosis is found on new leaves where the green veins are visible on yellow leaves. Iron chlorosis can be corrected by the addition to iron to the soil. The best way to do this is to use Ferro food and you should begin seeing results in a couple of weeks. Apply the iron yearly or whenever symptoms reappear.

NatureThank you to Rodney Zingel for this contribution

Very interesting indeed….in fact almost unbelievable!

(Interestingly she hugged the coastlines rather than going over big areas of open water!)

Bird migration is a really fascinating subject and I am constantly amazed at the distances that some birds travel each year. With the improvements in modern technology, we can now also follow these birds more closely.

A female European Honey Buzzard was fitted with a satellite tracking system in Finland recently and was of particular interest to locals because it spent the most recent austral summer around the town of Reitz in the Free State in South Africa. She left Reitz to start heading

north on 20 April 2015 and on the 2nd June, she finally reached Finland where she will probably spend the boreal summer before probably returning again next season to visit us here in South Africa.

Here is an image showing the data received from the tracker which plots out the route that she took to head north... so, in just 42 days, she covered over 10 000 km at an average of more than 230 km every single day! Isn’t that just amazing...?

This is one of our smaller herons and is a shy species, inhabiting areas with undergrowth around wetlands. The overall colour of the adult bird is greenish-grey with a noticeably darker green crown, dark green upperparts and a pale grey throat and white chest. The feet and legs are generally a bright yellow. The immature bird is differently coloured - as was noticeable during a recent bird walk on the estate - showing a brownish plumage with a well streaked neck and with buffy and white spots on the wings.

Green-backed Heron (Gymnogene)(Butorides striatus)

By André Marx

Bird of the Month

The Green-backed Heron is found mostly in fresh water habitats, such as streams and rivers and ponds in our estate, where it has been known to breed. It needs dense vegetation cover for its nest and to roost and when disturbed will generally fly off to the nearest vegetation clump where it will take cover.

Feeding mostly at dusk or in the evening it can also sometimes be seen fishing during the day when it is observed standing motionless, waiting for the movement of its prey. This is a bird that will often perch on a branch just above water waiting to pounce on its prey, and has been documented using insects and small sticks as a lure to catch fish, an amazing phenomenon to witness. They feed mostly on fish but also take amphibians, insects, crabs, reptiles, and even mice and small mammals.

This species is mostly a solitary nester, although sometimes when the habitat allows them, and there is abundant food, a few nests can be found in close proximity to one another. Recently a pair must have bred along Trent Stream in Dainfern as they were observed with a pair of juveniles in that area. The nest is well hidden a few metres above the ground and is a bulky stick nest where from 2-5 pale greenish eggs are laid. Both sexes incubate for about 25 days and will raise the young which take about 4 weeks to fledge.

The Green-backed is not really threatened in our area and will continue to prevail as long as wetland areas are relatively undisturbed and free of toxins that can affect the aquatic life, and the vegetation cover along wetlands is maintained and kept intact.
