sion delegations from China, Russia and Brazil, Schultz van Haegen said the challenges facing the sector needed front-runners who want to innovate. “We need pioneers,” she said. “Intelligent, clean shipping is the future. That’s where the opportunities for innovation are – and the opportunities for strengthening our competitive position.”In committing her government to further infrastructural devel-opment for waterborne trans-port and honouring pledges on environmental legislation, Schultz van Haegen also em-phasised the pace of regulatory change should be guided by consensus.“I want to work with the sec-tor and develop solutions at the international level,” she said. “I believe EU regulations should not be stricter than glo-bal regulations.” Specifically referring to targets on reduc-
ing CO2 emissions, she added: “They are most effective when agreed at global level. That is the position I support.”Prior to the official opening act, Govert Hamers, chair-man of Sea Europe (European Ships and Maritime Equip-ment Association), picked up the themes of public-private partnership and the environ-mental agenda. “If we want a more innovative and sus-tainable industry we need to collectively (policy makers, industry and customers) set achievable targets and then stick to them,” he said.
Future of maritime industryThis year’s Europort also hosts ‘Future Pioneers’, organised by Maritime by Holland and Ahoy Rotterdam to bring together marine equipment business leaders with the designers and engineers of tomorrow.
“The future of the maritime industry depends on the availability of enough skilled professionals,” said Melanie Schultz van Haegen. “We must do everything we can to attract talented young people. In the Netherlands, we are funding short work placements for sec-ondary school pupils who want to know what this industry is all about.”Ahoy’s managing director Jolanda Jansen reported an ex-hibition sell-out for Europort 2013. “The Europort 2013 exhi-bition has attracted 1,062 com-panies from 40 countries, 45% of them having come from out-side the Netherlands,” she said. “The conference programme includes the Mare Forum, a two-day Ballast Water Man-agement Conference, and the CEDA Dredging Forum, while Advanced Technology Confer-ences run throughout the four-day event. With around 30,000
maritime professionals attend-ing, Europort 2013 has once more proved itself to be truly at the centre of the maritime and offshore world.”

boost of Dutch maritime innovationsIn the course of this year’s Eu-roport, the classification so-ciety Bureau Veritas (BV) says it is boosting innovations and sustainability in partnership with Dutch owners, builders and designers.
Jan Smit, senior vice president and head of the North Europe & North America Zone of BV’s Ma-rine & Offshore Division, said, “BV is a core part of the Dutch maritime industry, which is pushing ahead with innovative designs focusing on operational excellence and energy efficiency. We are helping yards and own-ers to invest in ships that are cleaner and more economical to operate. We have a strong pipe-line of new projects for highly innovative vessels linked to the Dutch maritime cluster.”
innovations of the Dutch maritime clusterAt the beginning of the year, the Dutch gas carrier opera-tor Anthony Veder took deliv-ery of the world’s first directly driven dual-fuel LNG carrier, the Coral Energy, built at Pa-penburg-based Meyer Werft. With a capacity of 15,600m3
and a specifically designed compatibility package, the Ice Class IA vessel can load LNG at all major terminals. BV as-signed the ship a sophisticated class notation, reflecting the vessel’s innovative design, en-
vironmental friendliness and advanced control systems.Furthermore, the BV-classed Reestborg, a 23,000-dwt Ice Class IA multi-purpose vessel built at Ferus Smit, was recently deliv-ered to the shipping company Wagenborg. It is the largest vessel ever built by the yard. The distinctive hull form, featuring an innovative bulbless bow with negative stem profile, sharp entrance angles and reduced bow flare in combi-nation with a ducted large slow-running propeller, significantly reduces the hull resistance, the classification society noted. The M2 Runner is an innovative design concept for a short-sea general cargo vessel, which has been developed by the Dutch designer Conoship in coopera-
tion with the owner Hartman Marine. In order to achieve the highest flexibility for the carriage of high-volume project cargoes such as wind turbine parts and industrial plants, the cargo deck area has been maximised to over 1,300m2 and the open-top con-cept has been applied. The first out of a series of three, Oceanic, was delivered in 2012.In the OSV and tug segment, De Hoop is building a 65m-long DP multi-purpose support ves-sel (MPSV) with triple moon-pools for Seamar Subsea. Niestern Sander has been awarded a newbuilding con-tract for a 79m “walk-to-work” vessel, designed to support the North Sea gas operations of the NAM (Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij BV, a joint venture
between Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil). The vessel, which will be oper-ated by Wagenborg, incorpo-rates an integrated Ampelmann system to access offshore units. Both MPSVs will be certified by BV as special-purpose ships. Meanwhile, Damen Shipyards continues to extend its product range of sophisticated tugs and OSVs. BV is currently involved in several new designs, includ-ing the ASD Tug 2913.Global maritime services com-pany Boskalis recently took de-livery of the 4,500m3 trailing suction hopper dredger Causeway from Dutch shipbuilder Shipkits. Conoship designed the vessel as a highly manoeuvrable craft for shallow-water operations. IHC Merwede delivered the 25-MW self-propelled cutter suction dredger Artemis to Van Oord in April 2013, the second of a pair of highly advanced mega-cutters. The shipbuilder also launched the “Easydredge” concept, which aims to provide cost-efficient trailing suction hopper dredgers by supplying a basic design platform with various option packages, which can be delivered from stock. Specific attention is paid to life-cycle management, energy ef-ficiency and sustainable dredg-ing, IHC said.

Europort 2013 will showcase innovative technology aimed at meeting the critical chal-lenge posed to shipping by en-vironmental restrictions under Tier III legislation.
Radical tightening of permis-sible nitrogen oxide and sul-phur emissions from ships will change shipping profoundly after January 1st 2016, particu-larly within emission control areas (ECAs). Staged just over a year before the new regime comes into force, Europort 2013 will offer the maritime and offshore sectors the chance to find out how technology in-novators have risen to regulato-ry challenges, and to consider their actions before new restric-tions become mandatory. The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Tier III restrictions require an ap-proximately 74% reduction in NOx emissions compared with Tier II-type engines. Permissible NOx emissions under Tier III are restricted to between 3.4 g/kWh and 2.0 g/kWh, depending on an engine’s rated speed. Shipowners also need to ad-dress tightening SOx emis-sions restrictions from 2015, particularly in ECAs. Under the currently agreed schedule, the amount of sulphur permitted in marine fuels will fall in ECAs from a current 1% to 0.1% in 2015, and globally in 2020 from 3.5% to 0.5%. To meet the regulatory de-mands, owners will either have to operate on lower sul-phur fuel or distillates, burn gas, fit an exhaust gas scrub-ber or change their operating profile. Both future fuel selection and the energy efficiency of ships already built and in service are key themes in the Advanced Technology and Mare Forum conference programmes that are integral to Europort 2013.
Real progress on one of the industry’s future fuel options will be highlighted in the Pioneering With LNG session at the Advanced Technology Conferences, where Dutch ex-pertise in inland operations, shipbuilding and marine equipment design has come into its own. Mare Forum will address the wider strategic is-sues of future trends in fuels as part of a wider debate on ”eco ships”, using the stimulating, free-flowing and informal ap-proach to discussions that is the hallmark of the Mare Fo-rum formula.
exhibiting efficiencyTier III and how to address it are also themes high on the agenda for exhibitors at this year’s Europort. “We have developed a ‘Green Route’ specifically to guide exhi-bition visitors through the companies recognised for the technologies they have devel-oped to meet environmental concerns,” said Raymond Sil-iakus, Europort’s exhibition manager. “Visitors to Euro-port 2013 need to be able to look beyond the buzzwords and explore the real progress the technical innovators are
making to meet and exceed emissions regulations.” GE Marine, for example, will be drawing attention to its 12V250 marine diesel engine. The com-pany recently confirmed the 12V250 as its first marine en-gine meeting both US Environ-mental Protection Agency Tier 4i and IMO Tier III in-engine emissions requirements with-out the need for exhaust gas after-treatment. GE is now able to offer its L250 and V250 medium-speed marine die-sel engines (1,550-4,650 kW) without a selective catalytic re-duction (SCR) system. In addition to meeting emis-sions compliance, the GE 12V250 MDC engine has in-creased power over the IMO Tier II model. The engine’s new two-stage turbocharging also offers a faster response time.GE’s L250 engines rated at less than 2,000 kW will meet EPA Tier 3 emission levels ahead of schedule, the company said. Depending on duty cycle and application, the L250 engines consume over 5% less fuel compared with Tier II stand-ards. In addition, the 8L250 and 12/16V250 engines rated at more than 2,000 kW will
meet EPA standard path Tier 4i (interim) requirements in 2014. Europort visitors may also wish to quiz MAN Diesel & Turbo about the latest addition to its four-stroke range, L35/44DF. The DF version complies with IMO Tier II emission limits in diesel mode and IMO Tier III limits in gas operation. In line with coming choices facing shipowners on fuel use, MAN Diesel & Turbo made a high degree of fuel flexibility (HFO, MDO, MGO and natural gas) a primary objective in devel-oping this engine. MAN Diesel & Turbo says the L35/44DF engine is a sig-nificant step in marine engine technology, not least because its attributes can be retrofitted to engines already in service – and specifically to the popular 32/44CR series Tier II-compli-ant engines. Other companies involved in-clude Rolls-Royce and ABB, the former of which has taken a lead in developing smaller gas-powered engines, while the lat-ter’s crane and marine business unit has developed a complete suite of energy efficiency soft-ware to optimise fuel use and other energy consumers on board ship. Separate exhibitor ABB Tur-bocharging, meanwhile, will come to Europort to show its new A200-L generation of single-stage turbochargers for low-speed two-stroke engines, which the company says rep-resent a ”quantum leap” in technological development. The A200-L has up to 30% ad-ditional volume flow, which to date is fully the equivalent to one size smaller in a series of turbochargers.
special additionsAs ever, new vessel designs are also a feature of this year’s Euro-port, and here, too, environmen-tal imperatives are central to the

innovations on show. Typical is the new PSV 3300 offshore ves-sel from Damen Shipyards, the starting point for its new portfo-lio of offshore vessels. Specifically designed to Damen’s “E3“ principles – Environmentally friendly, Ef-ficient in operation and Eco-nomically viable – the first PSV 3300 was delivered in July to Norwegian owner World Wide Supply. The design fea-tures a wave-piercing bow, slender hull lines and diesel electric propulsion with azi-muth stern drives, in a com-bination that minimises fuel consumption. Long, smooth lines in the entire form also have a positive effect on the durability of coatings. Damen is also responsible for delivering the first vessels built in Europe to the E-KOTUG de-sign for Kotug, which features a hybrid Rotor®tug solution developed to reduce emis-sions, improve fuel efficiency and cut noise. The Rotor®tug approach means energy can be stored for standby or very low power operations, so that vessels can perform these parts of their duties without noise or emissions. Mid-2014 will see delivery of the first Kotug vessels built to this de-sign, in the shape of two hy-brid Rotor®tugs ART 80-32, and Kotug has issued an open
invitation to visit booth 6608, where the Rotor®tug company will be present to go through the technology.Van der Velden, another com-pany along Europort’s Green Route, will be presenting its environmentally friendly Van der Velden® FLEX tun-nel, whose ability to retract confers major benefits in terms of speed, loading ca-pacity, manoeuvrability and reduced fuel consumption. With the tunnel embedded into the vessel hull, resistance is lowered and efficiency in-creased. When sailing in shal-low waters, the Flex tunnel is deployed to ensure sufficient water flow to the propellers and maintain their efficiency. Driving ships in the most ef-
ficient way possible through the water is not only a matter of a vessel’s physical, or in-deed mechanical, attributes. The Polish company Enamor, for example, is exhibiting at Europort 2013 to draw atten-tion to the suite of control and automation products it has developed that address is-sues raised by the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP). These will include the compa-ny’s propulsion control assist-ance system ETNP-10 – a cost-effective drive control that takes into account the draught of the ship, its current load and the rotation speed of the shaft. The device allows users to observe the field of drive and initiate an immediate re-
sponse when limit values are exceeded. Parameters such as torque, power, rotating speed, vessel’s speed, efficiency, etc. are constantly measured and analysed.Enamor will also exhibit the fuel consumption moni-tor EFCM – a tool dedicated to control current fuel con-sumption for use on ships equipped with pulse flow meters. The system measures the consumption of low and high sulphur, heavy and light oil by the main engine, auxil-iary engine and boiler. Meas-urement results are displayed on a colour touch screen. The company will also present the E-VesselTracker, a set of tools designed to achieve the best ship performance.Europort 2013 represents one of the last chances for the in-dustry to gather before Tier III restrictions change the way ships operate, the fuels they consume and the way both are documented. As Europort’s exhibition manager Siliakus observed: “Our experience of the maritime industry is that visitors will arrive knowing what information they need to find and with only a limited amount of time to find it. It is also our experience that there is no substitute for putting the questions you want answered face to face.”
At the booth of MAN Diesel & Turbo, visitors can get comprehensive information about the company’s four-stroke range

Groningen-based Central Indus-try Group NV (CIG) will present the VG6000-E, a multi-purpose special cargo vessel for the offshore industry. Three of the 6,000-dwt, twin-screw, open-top vessels, which have diesel-electric propulsion and can also transport bulk cargo as well as 20- and 40-foot containers, have been built so far. More orders are expected, CIG said.
Details of the vg6000-eThe 107.2m-long and 16m-wide VG6000-E design is said to be low in emissions and power consumption, reliable, easy to use and with a low total cost of ownership.Equipped with a dynamic po-sitioning (DP) system, the ves-sel is aimed at being a highly versatile means of transport for the offshore market and a wide range of special cargoes. Every effort has been made to exploit the space available to provide extremely large cargo holds in relation to the overall size of the vessel, CIG stated. The vessel has a forward-sit-uated superstructure to per-mit the largest possible deck space, reinforced tank tops, reinforced and removable tween decks and hatch covers, CIG noted.
All of the hatch covers can be removed and stowed at one end of the cargo hold or on deck to allow the vessel to be completely open. The upper hold is 80m long, making the vessel suitable for carrying parts for offshore wind farms. Moreover, the tween deck hatches can be positioned and stored at every position, making the areas as versatile as possible. Manipulating the hatch covers is achieved by a single gantry crane that runs the length of the cargo deck.To minimise hatch-handling operations, the lifting arrange-ments and crane have two spreader frames for manoeu-vring the hatches. One frame
sits inside the other, and the two frames together lift the hatch covers. When disen-gaged, the inner (smaller) spreader frame is small enough to fit inside the hold and lift the tween deck hatches’ covers with containerstyle twistlocks, which can be engaged in spe-cial deck recesses before the spreader frame is lowered into position. Netherlands-based Coops & Nieborg supplied the crane as well as all the hatches and tween decks. When the cargo hold is full, equipment can be transported above deck thanks to the rein-forced hatch covers. The superstructure provides an element of protection to the
cargo carried there, and the vessel can carry large drums of cable or steel coils vertically in the hold with the hatch covers stowed.
strategic repositioningIn the run-up to Europort 2013, the group further an-nounced the strategic reposi-tioning of the company as an innovation-driven, technolog-ically advanced conglomerate operating in various areas of steel-constructional design, engineering and production, with shipbuilding as a core activity.

After an elaborate engineer-ing and design process, the first EDDY (efficient double-ended dynamic) tug is due to be delivered in June 2014. Built by Holland Shipyards, the 30.3m-long and 13.4m-wide EDDY 30-65 has a bol-lard pull of 65 tonnes. At a draught of 4.75m, it reach-es a maximum speed of 14 knots.
The EDDY tug concept was es-tablished in 2008. Since then, it has undergone comprehensive testing and fine-tuning. The re-sult is a tug boat that is ready to face today’s challenges in the towage market, its builder said. Issues such as efficiency, safety and economy have been effec-tively addressed by incorpo-rating features such as hybrid propulsion, all-round fender-
ing, several watertight com-partments in the hull and a Kraaijeveld safe-winch.
performanceThe vessel, being truly double-ended, can be operated in any direction, without significant reductions in performance. A slender hull shape will lead to a reduction in drag, lead to fuel sav-ings and higher transit speeds.
Vessel handling is very intuitive, which promotes more safety in operations. With its unique propulsion ar-rangement, push and pull forces can be promptly provided in any direction. Also, when operating at speed, dynamic forces of twice the bollard pull can be generated.
propulsion systemAzimuthal propulsion will be provided by two newly devel-oped Schottel SRP 3000 thrust-ers making the EDDY tug the first tugboat to incorporate these thrusters. Power will be supplied by two 1,610-kW Mitsubishi S16R main engines and two genera-tors with a capacity of 568 kW. In free sailing condition, the tug can easily reach a transit speed of 9 to 10 knots purely on its generators, leading to sig-nificant fuel and maintenance savings. When maximum pow-er is needed, the electromotors boost the two main engines, providing a bollard pull of 65 tonnes.
accommodationInside the deckhouse a spacious accommodation is provided for seven persons in five cabins, all with en-suite sanitary facilities.

Imtech Marine’s Europort presentation will predomi-nantly revolve around energy management. For the com-pany, energy management involves a holistic approach, rather than considering the automation possibilities alone. If fuel consumption and/or emissions need to be reduced, energy management has to be considered during the design stage, throughout operations and for the entire lifetime of the vessel.
Alexander Breijs, a consultant from Imtech Marine’s energy competence centre, said: “The energy management system op-timises energy generation and consumption in line with the goals of the owner. These goals could be fuel, emissions or wear and tear reduction, or even op-timisation to ensure availability during critical operations.”He said that energy manage-ment should be considered already in the design stage and
that it is vital to make sure this is followed through during the vessel’s operational lifetime. The same automation tools are used in the design and opera-tional stage.
Together with an operational goal, a customer’s operational profile is fed into Imtech Ma-rine’s newly developed grid effi-ciency calculation tool and this considers what types of energy
sources are best to use, e.g. if any batteries are required, how to make optimal use of them and how they should inter-connect. Finally, a comparison can be made between various designs on the basis of their net yield with respect to the set operational goal. All perform-ance indicators used in the de-sign stage are then translated to the onboard EMS automation. During the operational life-time, design goals are actively controlled by continuously up-dating grid configuration and load division between various power sources. “This allows us to design an energy and propul-sion plant given the operational goals and operate the power plant accordingly,” Breijs said. The pioneering approach has already been used on a super-yacht and two CMAL hybrid fer-ries due to enter service in Scot-land before the end of the year.

ATP Instone (ATPI), a lead-ing global provider of special-ist travel management to the shipping and energy industries, will be launching the ATPI CrewHub at Europort 2013. De-veloped to optimise crew travel management, ATPI CrewHub integrates HR, finance and/or crew management systems with the company’s booking platform to make crew travel logistics more efficient and cost effective while providing opti-mised safety.
backgroundIn daily business shipping com-panies deal with complex crew travel logistics, often to remote
and risk-ridden places. Without the right people, ATPI noted, ships cannot sail and projects cannot be completed. This makes the travelling of crew a crucial aspect of the industry. At the same time companies need to control direct travel costs, manage indirect, process-related costs and have a duty of care requirement to fulfill. They need to take care of the safety of their employees while they are at work. ATPI’s risk manage-ment solutions include emer-gency tracking systems, alerts and global 24/7 teams.

GE Marine will showcase its engine portfolio in Rot-terdam. Earlier this year, at Nor-Shipping in Oslo, the company announced the successful completion of an extensive emissions testing programme for the first 12V250 marine diesel engine meeting EPA Tier 4i and IMO Tier III in-engine emission requirements. GE Marine’s engine technol-ogy is said to eliminate the need for a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system and storing or using urea aboard a vessel, thereby preserving
cargo and tank space. SCR requires using a diesel ex-haust fluid, typically urea, to reduce NOx. GE’s non-SCR solution is based on the technological advancements of the L250 and V250 engines and re-quires no supplemental equipment or fluids. In addition to meeting emis-sions requirements, the GE 12V250 MDC engine has increased power over the IMO Tier II model.

IHC Winches, part of IHC Merwede, recently officially presented its 50-tonne fibre rope traction winch, the IDsis (IHC Deep-sea installation system) to the market. The dedicated system for handling fibre rope has been developed to overcome the restrictions of using conven-tional steel and synthetic wires, IHC Winches said. Steel is durable but heavy, which limits its usage in deeper water. Currently used synthetics are light, but low-heat resistance and high-creep properties limit their appli-cation on large winches, the company further noted. The rope is designed for critical deepwater applications, such as deep-sea installation, aban-donment and recovery (A&R) and offshore mining opera-tions.The development of IDsis has resulted in the combination of a traction winch, which re-duces wear of the composite cable for the given load situ-ations; and a storage winch, which is capable of reeling large amounts of fibre rope.
Both are combined with an intermediate tensioner for safe and reliable operation in the offshore environment.Following the successful com-pletion of the factory accept-ance test, the new deep-sea in-stallation system will be tested in the North Sea in association with Seaway Heavy Lifting on
one of its offshore vessels later this year. The Dutch Maritime Innova-tion Programme has funded the development of the ID-sis deployment system. This R&D project is executed in conjunction with the compa-nies Bexco, Seaway Heavy Lift-ing and Reden, which joined
forces with IHC Winches to combine their various areas of expertise, such as winch and fibre rope technology, rope construction, operational off-shore knowledge, modelling, simulation and legislation.

Allpacks International will be presenting its new wireless vi-bro monitoring system. The Dutch specialist in engi-neering, development, pro-ducing and distribution of hy-draulic- and electrical-driven equipment said the system had been developed to register used energy for driving foundation piles without the need of ca-ble connections. According to Allpacks International, the sys-tem has a significant advantage over units that are connected with cables, since they may break during the vibration. For the monitoring system, a small
sensor unit is mounted on the vibratory hammer. The moni-tor, which shows real-time data of energy, depth, frequency, pressure, amplitude, rate, X and Y angle and time, will be installed in the control room or cabin. The data received will auto-matically be transferred to the system in the control room.Allpack’s system enables copy-ing the data to a memory stick or sending it to the company’s server address.

“Innovations in safer mooring ropes” and “easier rope han-dling” are the focal points of Lankhorst Ropes’ booth at this year’s Europort exhibition in Rotterdam. Along with the Challenger-coated Lankforce rope, the award-winning Tipto Winch-line and A3 rope splice will be presented at the booth, dem-onstrating the latest improve-ments in abrasion resistance.
Lankhorst Ropes will be hold-ing a daily lunchtime seminar programme at 12pm at its booth, covering topics such as mooring rope safety, easier rope handling for smaller crews, improved abrasion re-sistance for longer-lasting tow-ing ropes and the advantages of fibre rope lifting slings.

Vosta LMG will present two in-novative product developments. Following the successful launch of the Greenforce ball joint at the Europort in 2011, this year the engineering and contract-ing company will launch the crossover ball joint. The cross-over combines the advantages of both the conventional and
the greenforce ball joint in one, Vosta LMG said. In addition, the company will be presenting innovations for cutting systems, which will further improve the efficiency of the successful T-type rock cutter heads.

Victaulic will be introducing Vic-Press®, an IACS-approved press-to-connect system for joining small-diameter stain-less steel pipes. The Vic-Press system schedule 10S offers a quick, simple, safe and reliable means of joining 15-50mm (½–2”) stainless steel pipe, the US-headquar-tered company said. The sys-tem is type approved for class III piping systems by Germa-nischer Lloyd.Vic-Press uses off-the-shelf type-316 ASTM A-312 sched-ule 10S stainless steel pipe, which is readily available so shipbuilders do not need to stock specialty pipe. With the Vic-Press system the pipe is cut to length and deburred, marked for visual verification of full insertion, then inserted into the cou-
pling or fitting. A hand-held tool presses the coupling/fit-ting onto the pipe-end, pro-viding a positive mechanical interlock and creating a rigid, permanent, leak-tight joint in seconds, Victaulic noted. An internal pipe stop within the couplings and fittings helps correctly position the pipe to ensure positive joining, while the seal pocket helps protect the gasket during assembly. Vic-Press seals are pre-lubricated to further simplify the instal-lation process. No additional lubrication is required for pipe and fitting installation. Once installed, patent-pending press detection technology enables the installer to identify any un-pressed joints as the system is filled and tested. The approved product range comprises couplings, tees, el-bows, reducers, end caps and adapters. Vic-Press couplings and fittings are pressure-rated up to a maximum of 16 bar/1600 kPa (232 psi). They are fire resistant and recommended for use with fluids at temperatures up-to 98°C (208°F) for the standard HNBR gasket seal and up-to 121°C (250°F) for the EPDM gasket seal.
