Aspen Ruth Van Horn was threeweeks old when she suddenlystopped having wet and dirty diapers. She then had a decrease in appetite and cried non-stop, symptoms which are normally associated with colic. Her parents, Shayla and Josh Van Horn, thought that she had a tummyache or gas so they tried variousremedies. However, none of themwere helping Aspen relieve anypain.

A call to their pediatrician, Dr.Charles Mettry, DO, at Mercy Hospital in Ada, Oklahoma, was the only logical choice they had. Dr. Mettry knew at the instant he touched Aspen’s stomach that something was wrong. He immediately called a colleague of his, Chinni Pokala, M.D., at the Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City. Aspen was medi-flighted

$600,000 Donated to Jimmy Everest Center in

Honor of Aspen Van Hornfrom Mercy to Children’s within hours.

Their journey to Children’sHospital had just begun.

The Van Horn’s quickly jumped into their car and rushed to Children’s to meet their little girl. Aspen was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and had a prolonged stay consisting of several tests as the doctors diagnosed her.

After a thorough exam the Van Horns were updated on Aspen’s puzzling and difficult condition. Dr. Pokala informed them that Aspen had a mass that was pressing on her bladder and he determined the mass was a Stage 3 Neuroblastoma Tumor.

The follwing weeks were intense. Aspen received aggressive chemotherapy. “We were in the NICU for two weeks,” said Shayla Van Horn. “We stayed in a hotel nearby the hospital when visiting

hours were over. We were thankful that we were able to

stay on the 10th floor. The hospital provided us

with a large room for our family so we could

stay with our little girl as she underwent treatment.”

Aspen completed her first roundof chemo followed by anothertwo rounds at the Jimmy EverestCenter(JEC) inside Children’sHospital. The waiting room madeher feel like a kid, not a patient.“Aspen enjoyed all the books andtoys in the waiting area,” said Shayla. “Aspen loves the fish in the fish tank. As a result, her grandfather got a saltwater fish

tank at home!”

At five months of age, Aspen hadendured two blood transfusions, three rounds of chemo and a surgical procedure to remove much of the mass. Aspen ontinued her monthly follow-ups at Children’s for repeated scans, which showed that the chemo had been successful.

Their monthly commute from Adawas difficult and time consuming, taking more than three hours round trip.

“We are so thankful that Children’s is close to us and that they have the best pediatric physicians to care for Aspen,” said Shayla. “We didn’t have to leave the state to receive the care that Aspen needed. It would have been very hard for us to leave

the state for that long. We were able to go home as we needed and family members were able to visit and support Aspen without traveling long distance.”

Aspen’s recovery looks promisingand her tumor continues to shrink.

“Our little miracle baby is twoyears old living a happy, healthylife,” said Shayla. “She is growingright on track, doing everything she should be doing at her age. We are so blessed and thankful to have her.”

The Van Horns are very thankful for the doctors and staff at the JEC as they helped save Aspen’s life. Aspen’s birthday was in January and the staff members let her pick several toys from the toy closet

because they couldn’t tell her nowhen she was undecided.

“The staff members are all so incredibly sweet, and I can’t sayenough nice things about them!”said Shayla.

Aspen Van Horn is a relative of Oklahoma native, Blake Shelton. Shelton recently donated $600,000 to Children’s Hospital Foundation in support of the Jimmy Everest Cancer Center. Shelton credits the JEC for his cousin’s survival and praised the center for the work they do for children battling cancer.

Standley Systems, a technology company based in Chickasha, Oklahoma, provided a vital piece of equipment that will help improve outcomes for Oklahoma’s children with heart complications. The 3-D printing machine has an estimated worth of over $100,000. The machine has the ability to make an exact replica of organs that doctors can use to plan surgery and practice operations. This printer uses images from patient’s MRI or CT scan as a template and molds the complex layers of material creating the overall model of the organ.

Children’s Hospital will be one among few hospitals in the United States to have a printer with these capabilities.

Dr. Marilyn Escobedo Says Goodbye after 16 years in OklahomaChildren’s Hospital Foundation (CHF) has a reputation for the recruited endowed chairs who administer treatment and care to patients at Children’s Hospital. Among those chairs is Dr. Marilyn Escobedo, CHF Reba McEntire Endowed Chair in Neonatology. Her addition to the team at the OU Department of Pediatrics and Children’s Hospital has led to great advancement and growth in neonatology research efforts.

We welcomed Dr. Morris Gessouroun as the Chairman of the OU Department of Pediatrics and CHF Scientific Director. Gessouroun cared for the survivors of the daycare center in the Alfred P. Murrah building bombing in 1995. Gessouroun also treated the injured children from the major tornadoes that struck the Oklahoma City Metropolitan area. Dr. ‘Mo’, as we affectionately refer to him, has worked tirelessly to grow the Pediatric Critical Care Section from 2 FTE to 17 members.

The Adolescent Medicine Program, the only one of its kind in the state, led by Dr. Amy Middleman, M.D., M.S.Ed., M.P.H., CHF Richard Kasterke/Connie Griggs Chair in Pediatrics, continues to grow; as her team care for approximately 75 disordered eating patients, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. We continue our campaign to establish a $10 million endowment to ensure the good health of these children and adolescents.

As you take a look back on our most recent fiscal year, please know that you have made an incredible impact and your support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the substantial support you have shown Children’s Hospital Foundation throughout the past year. Due to your generosity, children from each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties are provided the best medical care without having to leave the state.

Our programs supported care for more than 233,000 patient encounters: inpatient, outpatient, satellite locations and telemedicine. Each and every donation, no matter the size; brings about funding for research, provides education and taps resources that allow the very best in medical care for Oklahoma’s greatest asset, our kids. CHF provided more than $2 million in grants for research, education and clinical care programs.
