Modern Solutions for the Mission

cloudCreating a Secure Multi-cloud Infrastructure IronTarget™ reference architecture powers a hybrid approach to moving legacy technology into

the cloud. It offers a quick and secure route to cloud infrastructures while also providing a single

point of management for the various platforms, realizing the goal of being “Cloud Smart.”

With IronTarget Defense organizations can:

• Meet cloud mandates by easing into public cloud use. IronTarget is a hybrid cloud with

on-premises capability that also bridges to public clouds, allowing workloads to be simply

moved back and forth as needed.

• Virtualize legacy apps to work in cloud environments. Don’t be forced to retire, rewrite or

refactor legacy applications prior to moving them, IronTarget enables the migration of

legacy workloads to more efficient platforms meeting today’s users’ needs.

• Improve availability with options for COOP and Disaster Recovery via the cloud or

site-to-site replication. Our solution is based on the tried and true hardware technology

of a hyper-converged platform, allowing for extreme scalability and growth, while

maintaining the highest level of performance.

• Achieve cost/performance optimization. Implemented in a hybrid or multi-cloud model,

applications can be migrated to the most cost efficient platform, moved to where

application performance is optimized, or to the edge when end user experience is critical.

Enabling Cloud As agencies are mandated to plan for “Cloud-Smart,” a public cloud may not be the best option.

Similarly, building a proprietary private cloud may not the most cost effective, long-term solution.

A DoD client needed to greatly reduce storage maintenance fees but was not ready to move all of

their storage to the public cloud. IronTarget enabled the agency to easily modernize their storage

architecture while future-proofing their investment for future public cloud migrations.

Beyond HCS-D, Iron Bow has decades of experience in developing and deploying collaboration

solutions within Enterprise and Expeditionary environments.

Enabling Face-to-Face Warfighter SupportA DoD client required personnel located across multiple sites to be able to communicate real-time,

face-to-face in a classified environment. Previous communication had been via telephone and

email, both of which proved unsatisfactory for fully meeting their warfighting mission. They wanted

to implement a full video conferencing solution. Iron Bow provided design and implementation

services for a unified approach to their communication architecture. This engagement encompassed

survey, design, engineering, product acquisition, warehousing, product delivery to remote locations,

on-site installation, testing and warranty support. The team planned and designed the unified

communications and interoperability architecture with input from government technical personnel.

The resulting system provides the face-to-face interaction the client was looking for and enables

secure, real-time collaboration among remote teams much more effectively.

data centerRe-imagining the Data Center for Access from AnywhereThe expectations we have of our IT systems are transforming from the types of applications

needed to how we access enterprise data. With an eye toward digital transformation,

organizations are looking to introduce microsegmentation, virtualization and cloud into their

data centers. With remote work becoming a reality across administrative functions of DoD,

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is reemerging as a solution to continuity of operations.

With VDI computing is taken off individual machines and held in a server environment, users can

access information from anywhere, whether it be on a hardwired terminal at the office, a laptop

at home or a mobile device at the airport. Regardless of location or device, they are served a

consistent desktop experience and workflow.

The benefits of this approach include:

• Centralized management

• Ease of OS and app migration

• Mobility enablement

• Streamlined and consistent patching and security updates

• Increase in business continuity

• Lower long-term operating costs

A Showcase for Others As part of the design and development of an active-active data center for a DoD client, Iron Bow

conducted pre-installation assessments to ensure this high availability system would perform

as expected. The VDI for over 2,000 users was designed to be hot-hot, rather than the standard

hot-cold design in which half of the assets remain offline. It was critical to the client that they

never experience any loss of production in the event of a single site failure. The finished system

met all requirements, received Department-wide recognition and serves as a showcase for

groups across the Department looking to move to VDI.

Digitization + IoTAsset Data = Asset ControlThe next step toward digitization is making sense of all of the new data being captured by devices. Iron Bow draws on decades of network experience to help clients evolve their systems to accept these new streams of data and turn them into actionable insight. The contextual awareness gained when assets can be tracked the same way as data files, holds incredible promise for more efficient and effective management and mission achievement.

Iron Bow supports: • Sensors and Data Collection – ensuring that sensors are deployed and managed in a way

that the data can be acted on.• Smart Infrastructure – networks need to be upgraded to support the army of smart

devices now connected to them. Use existing network to manage and monitor the devices that depend on it.

• Asset Security – designing systems that follow tagged assets wherever they go ensuring full visibility into whereabouts and also to inform users and administration of upcoming maintenance and updates.

• Data Correlation and Analytics – make data actionable. Normalize, correlate and present data in a way that it can be used to make informed decisions.

• Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) – process control solutions to integrate with and provide analytics around SCADA.

Building a Better SimulationIn today’s digitized world, training simulations are more accessible, accepted and realistic than ever. These simulations are critical to ensuring mission readiness while saving time and money. Data from field-deployed sensors can help build a contextual awarene ss for simulated training. Through real-world data, simulations can be more effectively programmed, removing the need to put expensive equipment at risk for training exercises.

Mobility + End User DevicesSoldiers Have Always Been Mobile, Now Their Technology is Too. Modern Day Soldiers require continual access to data to ensure readiness and better inform

decision making. Mobile devices and real-time data access are critical to meeting these

needs. Iron Bow combines wireless networking experience with mobile device management

expertise to get the right technology in the hands of soldiers for immediate access to data.

We understand the power of 5G and how to integrate it into DoD solutions. Our mobile device

management solutions automate the distribution, maintenance and support of your mobile

assets and infrastructure. Our secure mobile solutions keep data accessible for those who

need it while protecting it from those who don’t.

Enabling the M-Day SoldierTo achieve readiness, National Guard Modern Day soldiers need a secure solution for both

government furnished equipment (GFE) and bring your own (approved) device to access

computer-based training. During emergencies and training exercises, contractors and emergency

personnel alike, require quick and secure temporary guest access to resources that are segregated

from government resources. Iron Bow’s team of wireless experts are able to provide and support a

wireless network infrastructure that enables both training and mission requirements. The Iron Bow

NetworkingMoving to Software-driven Architectures for Simplicity and FlexibilityA software-defined architecture is a shift from relying on hardware as the workhorse of IT

systems to software to drive IT. Software-defined Networking (SDN) which originated in the data

center has now extended into the campus with Software-defined Access (SDA). Additionally,

Software-defined WAN (SDWAN) can be a critical piece that provides the security and

efficiencies to optimize how you connect your campus to applications whether they reside in

your private or public cloud. Each of these software-defined approaches helps:

• Simplify network operations. Add more capabilities without adding complexity. The

software-centric approach couples improved tools and intelligence in the network, changing

how a network is operated and managed. Centralized management automation inherent in

SDN reduces operator error, the leading cause of network outages, and gives IT operation

helps to make the network much more agile and flexible so you can effectively respond to

changing needs.

• Enable a cloud strategy. Software provides the speed and flexibility to integrate with cloud-

based technologies. SDN allows cloud-based applications and services to operate and be

accessed with the same user experience and operational consistency as if those services were

sitting in your data center.

• Enhance security capabilities. With SDN you can automate security policies across all

environments as well as enable microsegmentation, moving security closer to the application

rather than the data center, driving a data-centric approach to security.

Global Enterprise Fabric Iron Bow has been at the forefront in the development and deployment of the Global Enterprise

Fabric (GEF), a Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM) program that aims to

streamline the deployment of applications across the organization with a private cloud solution.

GEF was created in response to pressures including data center consolidation, growing user

demands for modern applications and the growing toolset needed to develop and deploy those

applications. The GEF is a private cloud where you pay for what you use as you use it. As an

Army-built and offered service there is no procurement needed. Utilizing Infrastructure as a

Service, Network Services and Computer Network Defense, organizations can get the resources

needed for faster application deployment to the field.
