Edgenuity Credit RecoveryDoes your son/daughter need to recover credits to graduate on time? Hudsonville High School is currently offering Edgenuity (formerly e2020) to students who need credits recovery. We are offering Core and Elective classes online that can be completed at home, or at school. All Tests and Exams must be taken at school either in the Media Center, or in the Media Center Lab.

Edgenuity is designed so students can work at their own pace and succeed in their course work. There is a $110.00 fee per class (.5 Credits). The after school sessions are offered from 2:45 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday in the Media Center. These classes are designed specifically for credit recovery and will be graded Credit/No Credit, no letter grades will be given. If you have any questions or if you would like more information about Edgenuity, please contact Mr. McDowell at 669-1500 extension 20407.

CHESS CLUB

The Chess Club will begin meeting and playing on Thursdays after school starting October 5th. Anyone in 9th-12th grade interested in learning chess, becoming better at chess, or just hanging out with friends and playing a few games of chess is a candidate for attending. All ability levels, grades, and genders are encouraged to stop by. We'll meet in Mr. Kinnane’s room 106 at the high school from 2:50 to 4:30.  Students can come and go as they wish, weekly attendance is not mandatory. The goal is just to have fun, meet new people, and have some occasional pizza. The turnout the last couple of years has been great, at about 20 kids nearly every week. Hopefully we can maintain that level, or more, this year!

FROM THE HHS MATH TEACHERS...

SUGGESTIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL LEARNING OF MATH •Focus on learning the math concepts when doing the assignments, not just “getting it done”.

•Do the homework, each day, every day. Teachers give practice so students can improve, not just to keep them busy.

• Practice careful reading of the textbook. Understanding technical reading is a skill honed through practice and invaluable outside of a school setting.

• Seek extra help from teachers before or after school. With some notice, all the teachers are willing to help kids outside of class and to better get to know them!

• Attend after school tutoring provided in the media center by GVSU students at the high school. Schedules are posted in the guidance offices and main campus media center.

PARENTAL SUPPORT • Encourage kids to think of math as “problem solving” where being creative, persistent, clever, and yes,

remembering rules, all come into play. But that math is NOT just about following a prescribed set of steps to reach a solution. Real life problems don’t all follow known step-by-step methods of solution or someone else would have already solved them! Don’t panic if your kids experience some frustration, but, rather, encourage them to persist, seek sources of help (online, friends, textbook, etc) and to ask for help as needed. The skills of being persistent, willing to expend effort on a problem, and talking with others about the work all help to build a better future problem-solver.

• Provide a location in the home conducive to learning.

• Limit access to television, video games, or other “screen time”, especially while trying to work on assignments.

• Ensure your son/daughter gets adequate sleep.

• Check online grades to see if assignments are being completed. Talk to your kids about how things are going.

• Encourage your son/daughter to get extra help if needed.

• Maintain communication with the teacher if you see problems developing.

M-Step Junior Testing: A large part of the M-Step junior test in the spring is the SAT test. The vast majority of math problems cover material learned up through Algebra 2B. While Precalculus is an important math class and is definitely needed for AP Calculus, getting through Algebra 2B before the spring of one’s junior year should be a goal for all students. This can be done by taking math all three trimesters either one’s freshman

or sophomore year (or both), or making sure to get Algebra 2A and B in the fall and winter trimesters if taking as a junior. Being on the path to complete these courses and do well on the SAT is very important. We strongly encourage students to try to finish Algebra 2B by the fall or winter of their junior year to be best prepared for the math portion of the M-Step and SAT testing.

Calculators: A TI-83 or 84 is helpful, though not required, for Geometry and the first half of Algebra I. Beyond that an 83 or 84 is required. Realize the value of the calculator will be spread over several years of high school math courses and will likely be used in future college math courses. If buying a new one is a financial concern, many used ones are available online if one searches for eBay auctions, Amazon.com, Craigslist, or other used calculator sellers. An internet search for “used TI-83” (or 84) should find various resellers of used graphing calculators. Additionally, at the end of schooling, used calculators can be easily sold (eBay, Craigslist, word of mouth, etc) for a decent return.

At home textbook help: Our Geometry, Algebra I, and Algebra II textbooks come with many additional resources, including online video demonstrations and examples, practice quizzes, and even the book itself can be viewed page for page online. Consult your childʼs teacher if youʼd like more information on how to access these useful features.

Dance Chaperones

In order to put on dances for our students here at HHS, we need help from adults in the community to act as chaperones. Parents, family friends, older siblings, aunts/uncles, youth group leaders are all great chaperones! In order to keep our dances a safe and fun environment, we need help from chaperones. Information about our dances for the 2017-2018 school year are listed below. Each dance will have two shifts for workers. Shift 1 = 7:30 - 9:45 p.m. and Shift 2 - 9:30 - 11:15 p.m. If

you are interested in helping put on a special night for our students, please feel free to contact Mrs. Jesky ([email protected]) or Ms. Muñoz ([email protected]).

Homecoming this year was a great success! “THANK YOU” to our parent and community members who acted as chaperones to help us pull off the biggest dance of the year.

Prom this year will be held at Stone Water Country Club in Caledonia on Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 8:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Usually, Junior and Senior parents help chaperone this dance. Don’t let your Junior or Senior talk you out of it, we need your help! If you are willing and able to help, please contact us. The cost of this dance is $50 per student and we want students to have as much time as possible to save their money. Prom is a fundraiser for each year’s Junior class and money raised is used during their Senior year.

CAREERLINE TECH CENTER OPEN HOUSE The Careerline Tech Center has scheduled their Open House for Tues. Oct. 24 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. This is a great opportunity for both students and parents to learn about the programs offered at the Tech Center. Teachers and current students will be in all 25 programs and will have activities and demonstrations to help visiting students decide which program is best. The Electric Hero food truck will be there so that guests of Open House can purchase dinner. It will be located at the front of the building.

Juniors and Seniors are eligible to attend the Tech Center. Applications for next year will be available some time in January.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONSMany seniors have already submitted college applications, but many more have yet to do so. It is recommended that seniors have their college applications in by the end of October. Colleges and universities now prefer on-line applications, and many schools are using The Common Application. Please check the college/university web site for information and instructions. If a student is confused about college applications and how to fill them out, they can stop by the Guidance Office and talk to the counselors to receive help.

TRANSCRIPTS:Once students have applied to college, they must submit an official copy of their transcript. In order for a transcript to be considered official, it must come directly from the high school. The best and easiest way to send a transcript is through the online transcript service Parchment. To create an account through Parchment, please go to www.parchment.com or connect to Parchment through the link on the Guidance Office website. Once you are there you will need to create an account, and then you can order transcripts to be sent electronically to the schools where you are applying.

STANDARDIZED TESTING 2017-18

This year’s juniors and seniors have taken or will take the SAT. While only 1 College Admission test is required for colleges, some students may choose to take both the SAT and the ACT. Listed

below are test dates for both the SAT and the ACT. In order to register for either test, you must do so through their respective websites. Both companies require that students upload a picture of themselves that will be printed on their admission ticket.

FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATIONThe Guidance Department receives many questions about financial aid and scholarships. We have many resources for students who are seeking financial assistance for college. Following is some general information regarding financial aid and scholarships. For more information check with your student’s counselor, or the financial aid office of the college you will be attending.

1. Financial AidFinancial aid indicates funds received by students who demonstrate “need” in the form of grants, work-study, and certain federal loan programs. To determine whether or not you demonstrate need, families need to file a document called the Free Application For Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. The preferred method of applying for financial aid is online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Filing online has many advantages, including faster notification as well as having your information saved from year to year.

To submit the FAFSA online, you must first obtain a Federal Student Aid ID at https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm The FAFSA should be filed as early as possible after October 1 and no later than Feb. 28 for full consideration for financial aid programs.

College Goal Sunday - coming this winter. Usually offered at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids. Detailed information can be found at www.micollegegoal.org once it’s posted.

2. ScholarshipsScholarships are gifts that are usually given for special talents, academic abilities, etc. that are sponsored by colleges or universities, organizations, businesses, churches, etc. While there is one form, the FAFSA, used to access financial aid, obtaining scholarship information requires much research and leg work.

Tips on obtaining scholarship information:

Find out what scholarship programs the college or university has to offer. This is the source of the most scholarship money received by Hudsonville High School students. Check the college catalog, web site, or financial aid office.

The high school guidance office maintains a file containing information and applications about a variety of scholarships that we receive information on. Click on The Hudsonville Scholarship File on the Guidance Office website to see a digital listing of all scholarships we currently have. This is listed under the “Scholarships/Fin. Aid” link. Students should check this file periodically to look for scholarships for which they may qualify.

Students may choose to do a scholarship search. This is where students supply information about themselves and a search is done to match the student with scholarships to which they may qualify. Some samples of websites are:

www.fastweb.comwww.finaid.orgwww.salliemae.comwww.michigan.gov/mistudentaid

SENIOR AUDITS/INTERVIEWSEach senior parent should have received a copy of their student’s senior audit in the mail by now. This audit indicates the student’s status on course requirements and credits as they work toward graduation. If you have any questions about the audit or classes needed, please contact your counselor. The counselors are in the process of meeting with each senior individually to go over their audit. All seniors and their parents received an electronic copy via email of the SENIOR CAREER AND COLLEGE PLANNING HANDBOOK, which contains valuable information regarding college planning, financial aid and scholarships as well as information for non college-bound students. You can also access the handbook on the Guidance Office website.

TEACHER REQUESTSPlease remember that teacher request forms for the 2017-2018 school year were due in the Guidance Office last May. In a trimester schedule, students may have different teachers for parts A and B of a class, such as Biology A and Biology B. Because the schedule is so tight, counselors will not be able to honor requests to keep or change a teacher at the end of a trimester. Teacher Request forms for 2018-2019 will be available in the Guidance Office in the spring. Those must be turned in by May 1, 2018, and that is the only way to request a teacher, or to request not to have a teacher, for the entire school year.

CAREER CRUISINGAll Hudsonville students have access to a very useful program called “Career Cruising.” Career Cruising is a comprehensive and interactive career guidance resource that provides the information students need to make the right career choice. It includes in-depth profiles of hundreds of different careers, detailed information on

colleges and universities, and scholarship programs.

FEATURES:• CAREER MATCHMAKER - Interest assessment tool• EXPLORE CAREERS - In-depth occupation profiles and searches• EXPLORE EDUCATION AND TRAINING - Information on colleges and universities• CAREER AND/OR SCHOOL SELECTOR - under both the career and education tabs, you can

search for either careers or schools matching criteria that you select.

Career Cruising also contains students’ Educational Development Plans (E.D.P.). The student’s EDP can be thought of as an online filing cabinet. In it students can keep all the information needed to plan their education and career path.

With the EDP students can:• Save Career Matchmaker results as well as other assessments• Keep notes on careers of interest• Track career preparation and planning activities• Record career and life goals• List extracurricular activities and work experiences• Create a great looking resume

HOW TO LOG ONTO CAREER CRUISING:1. Go to website: www.careercruising.com2. Username: Hudsonville Password: eagles

COLLEGE APPLICATION WEEKCollege Application Week (CAW) is coming up the week of October 23-27. College Application Week is a national campaign focused on ensuring that all students interested in attending college next year have applied to at least one college by the end of October.

During College Application Week, counselors & staff will:1. Provide a time and place at school for students to apply and/or finish college

applications (Lab 220).2. Gather information about where our students are applying. 3. Find out who might need assistance with the application process and provide

help.

If you are participating during College Application Week and plan to fill out or submit applications, make sure you come with your Social Security Number and form of payment (credit card).  If you think you qualify for free/reduced lunch, make sure you apply by that week because we can provide a fee waiver for you which means you do not need to pay the application fee.

“Love Changes it All”*Teacher Training *Student Assembly

*Parent TrainingOur three-year district strategic plan (SOAR III) has identified goals around social/emotional well being and/or bullying. For this reason, we have contracted with Jeff Veley to work with our staff, students, and parents during the 2017/18 school year to begin to address and frame these goals. Jeff’s message works in combination with other programs such as Bucket Fillers, Be Nice, etc., teaching students how to grow in their resilience and peacefully respond to dominance behavior. We believe that Jeff’s “Peace Sign Approach” is a simple and effective way of providing our students with the skills they need to address peer-to-peer conflict.

Our high school staff spent 3 hours training with Jeff on August 28th, our high school students attended his assembly on September 7th, and our parents are invited to attend his parent training on November 21st. It will be held in the High School Auditorium from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. This is indeed a training you won’t want to miss!
