Students have been completing assessment tasks and staff are now in the midst of writing reports. A student free day on Tuesday 18 th June has been designated for report writing. The reports will become available to all students and parents on Friday 28 th June. Reports are an important source of feedback to students and I would encourage all students to read these thoroughly and set clear educational goals for the second semester. The GAT was held on Wednesday with 300 students sitting the 3 hour test. This was the first time such a large exam has been held on campus and many thanks go to Jessica Watson, John McAndrew and Michael Caccamo for their organisation. Belmont also has another international travel (cultural immersion) experience leaving on the 25 th June. They visit schools and connect with Indonesian students, visit places of cultural significance and experience aspects of everyday life in Indonesia. We wish the 27 students and 4 staff a great trip. It is an expectation that students are in correct school uniform. This information can be found in the students school diary. Medical Forms Your child’s health and safety is extremely important to us. Therefore, we need to know about any medical conditions your child has. Medical conditions, such as Anaphylaxis, Allergies, Asthma, Diabetes and Epilepsy can be very serious and may require emergency treatment while at school. It is important that we have up to date information about the management of your child’s condition. To help us provide the best medical care for your child, we are requesting that you complete an Action Plan. The Action Plan must be completed in consultation with your family doctor and should be returned to us as soon as possible. This will ensure we have up to date medical information for your child. Where no standard Action Plan is available for your child’s condition, please provide written information from a Health Care Professional detailing appropriate treatment. If you ever have any concerns regarding your Child’s health please do not hesitate to contact us on 5243 5355. Anchi Sherpa, School Nurse

Year 11 Study Periods – Parent Support Each Friday, Week B Year 11 students are scheduled in formal study periods where they spend Periods 5 and 6 completing homework, revision or studying for assessments before entering the weekend. These compulsory periods (for students who do not study a VET subject) have teachers rostered on in order to support them in their learning. Each period there are teachers from a mixture of areas (Math, Science, Humanities, Health/PE and English) to ensure students can seek help as required. Our recent Year 11 survey determined:

More than 50% of Year 11 students are feeling “very challenged” or “overwhelmed” with the step up from Year 10 to 11.

40% of Year 11 VCE students are completing less than 4 hours homework per week, contrasting with the recommended 10 hours per week.

As a school we are seeking parent support in having students consistently attend these periods so we are able to continue to set and support students in the high expectations that come with being a VCE student. Elevate Education Sessions Recently our Year 12 students took part in Elevate Educations “Ace Your Exams” and “Memory Mnemonics” study skills sessions. Following on from these sessions our students have access to a great range of study resources. I encourage students and parents to go to https://au.elevateeducation.com/ and use the student portal password: rondo to access these. Year 12 Jumpers – 2020 At Year 11 assembly this week students were advised that applications for 2020 Year 12 jumper designs are now open, until the end of Week 1 in Term 3. Once the winning design is chosen details on how to order jumpers will be distributed so students and parents can submit orders prior to the end of Term 3 to allow for timely delivery. Ms Jess Watson VCE Leader

INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN THE MATHS COMPETITION? The Maths Competition is a National Competition that is coordinated by the Australian Mathematics Trust. Belmont High School has had some very high achievers in the past and it would be great to have even more students take on this challenge and participate this year. It is school-based competition and all students in Years 7–12 can enter. Students have 75 minutes to solve 30 different problems; 25 are multiple-choice questions. The problems get more challenging as the competition progresses, so students of all abilities will be challenged and inspired. The Competition is in August, but all students participating have to be registered before June 18th. So if you are interested please ask your Maths teacher for more information. Sharon Hogan Mathematics Learning Area Leader

EBONY ENDEAVOURS New House Leader I would like to introduce myself as the new Ebony House Leader. I have been a part of the Belmont High School community for a number of years in various different roles; most recently as an Acting Assistant Principal. Prior to this I have been in the classroom as a Year 7 teacher where I had the pleasure of teaching 7 Ebony in term one. I am excited to step in as the Ebony House Leader whilst Emily Gaito is on maternity leave. Emily Gaito’s news Emily had the joy of welcoming her beautiful baby boy Owen on the 25th May. Owen is happy and healthy and a very welcomed addition to Emily’s family. We wish her the best of luck whilst she is on maternity leave and hope that she enjoys every moment of her new role as Mum. Strive Camp Last week, our Year 9s attended their Strive camp. They participated in many activities that challenged them such as ‘The Giant Swing’ and ‘Initiatives’. They had the opportunity to build stronger relationships with their peers and teachers and also better understand themselves and what makes them ‘tick’. The camp was highly enjoyable and one to definitely remember.

Year 7 competitions The year 7 volleyball competition is in full swing. Our first two matches were against Blue and Green House. Our team has been highly competitive and displayed terrific sportsmanship and encouragement of each other. We walked away victorious and look forward to our next match against Red House on Monday. Congratulations to the team on their first experience of inter-school competitions at BHS. The year 7 Readers Cup team consisted of Mae Portbury, Dutt Patel, Susan Friswell, Lara Pearce and Matilda Whelan . They spent many months reading books and studying for this competition and created an engaging book trailer as well. Overall, the team came 5th and should be so proud of the effort and dedication they put in to make this possible. I look forward to spending the remainder of the year with Ebony House. Kind regards, Erin Prendergast Ebony House Leader

YEAR 7 VOLLEYBALL COMP Our Year 7’s have made a terrific start to this comp with a one win & a loss so far. They hit their stride today and look set to continue in this lunchtime competition at full pace. It has been awesome to have so many other GOLD House students support our newest GOLDIES. NAPLAN TESTING Well done to our Year 7 & 9 students who recently completed NAPLAN testing. Their attitude and effort during the three days of testing was outstanding. MUSIC HOUSE COMPETITION – Theme: Love Songs & Break Up Anthems! We are getting our songbirds & muso’s ready for the upcoming Music House Competition. Our Music Captains will be visiting each Form group at Form Assembly to allow a full representation of GOLDIES shine in this comp. YEAR 9 STRIVE CAMP What a fantastic time we had at Bacchus Marsh. GOLDIES continued to show what their made of in every activity undertaken. Personal challenges and high levels of support for each other are just a natural occurrence for this group. It was an honour for us to spend this time with them. A big thanks to Ms Hergstrom & Mr De Gois for being part of our GOLD team on camp.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Form Teachers or House Leaders with any information that will best support our GOLDIES! Mrs Jennings & Mr Vos.

BHS MULTI CULTURAL DAY

We are pleased to announce that this year’s SRC multi- cultural day will be held on Friday 16th

August. Following on from the huge success of the day last year, we are calling on students to be

actively involved in promoting their cultural heritage by providing food to sell at a stall or

performing or running an activity. The festivities will take place at lunchtime and all money raised

will go to an international charity (TBA).

The Multicultural day committee is busy recruiting students to show off their cultural heritage in

some way. If you can support your child in showcasing their cultural heritage by providing food,

traditional costume, equipment for music/dance or in any other way please encourage them to see

Ms Suter or Ms McCarthy in the library or contact us via email [email protected]

The day is about celebrating and learning about our diverse backgrounds in an inclusive and

enjoyable way. It is also about empowering students to make a difference in the world by raising

money for those that do not have the privilege of our safe and comfortable lives.

Ms McCarthy & Ms Suter

SRC Coordinators
