We have come to the end of a very busy and hectic first Term. The opening day for new boarders on Monday 30 January seems a very long time ago. Since then our community has:

Participated in the annual Mass for the boarding community with Mons. Ian Dempsey, and the Mass to celebrate the opening of the College year with Fr. Peter Sheedy.

Celebrated the academic success of all of the 2016 Year 12 students at the Laureate Assembly, especially the Year 12 boarders. Undoubtedly the highlight of the Assembly was the awards received by our 2016 boarder, Josh Smith from Clare, and his inspirational speech.

Celebrated Mass together on Sundays and spent a number of reflective hours in our Chapel.

Met new teachers and staff members.

Settled down to productive study routines.

Began to discover what it means to be Marist.

Started first Term sport and other co-curricula activities.

Year 12s enjoyed Retreat.

Unwound at the beach after school.

Spent many hours in our magnificent new gymnasium: the Br Joseph McAteer Centre.

Formed new friendships.

Enjoyed meals together.

Been involved in a host of weekend activities including strawberry picking and trips to Harbour Town.

Some spent too much time at Flinders Medical Centre and the Doman Medical Centre!

…. and hundreds of other activities and events. No wonder we are exhausted as we come to the end of Term 1.

The staff have wonderfully cared for your daughters and sons. Caitlin Brown said at prayer in the Girls boarding house last Tuesday, “I believe I have the most wonderful job in the world”. Caitlin’s love of boarding reflects the views of all of our staff.

School Captain & Boarder Gemma Thomas (Roxby Downs)

43 Year 12 boarders gathered on Saturday 8 April for pre-Formal photos with their families in the Boarding Houses, before moving over to Paringa Hall to have their traditional Staircase photo prior to leaving for the Formal at the Entertainment Centre. Boarding captains, Alice Fry and Rashaun Stephenson-Stuart, spoke to the families and staff thanking them for their support and sharing the afternoon. It was a pleasure to see the boarders dressed in all their finery and for staff to share their joy on this occasion.

Boarding Registrar, Barb Stephenson, is on Long Service Leave next Term and Bernie Buchanan will fill in for Barb during her absence. Many of you will know Bernie as she has filled in for Barb in the past. I wish Barb a happy and relaxing time away and I am sure many in our community appreciate her commitment to the boarders and their families, and how hard she works on our behalf. All the best, Barb.

Coordinator of Boys Boarding, Jason Dam, is marrying Jesamine Benn in the school holidays on Sunday 23 April. Our congratulations from the boarding community go to Jesamine and Jason for your special day, and we pray your years together are full of love, joy and blessings.

Four members of our boarding community have been selected to participate in the College’s Marist Basketball team and will be heading to Ashgrove, Queensland, from 9-13 April. We congratulate Year 10 boarders Mikaela Hayes (Greenock), Gemma Horgan (Port Lincoln), Tanner Morris (Kingscote) and Year 12 boarder Lewis Carey (Darwin) and wish them every success for a great Carnival.

The College and boarding house were represented at two field days during March – the first was the Wimmera Field Days (Horsham, Vic) where Shane Hennessy, Director of Boarding, attended with the College having an exhibitor site for the first time. Lots of past scholars visited and plenty of interest was shown. We hope to attend again in 2018. Girls Supervisor, Di Barnes, and Boarding Registrar, Barb Stephenson, attended the South East Field Days held at Lucindale. Fraser Maggi, boarder Year 12/2016 from Naracoorte, came along to the field days and voluntarily spent the two days assisting Di and Barb with enquiries! We pass on our thanks to Fraser for generating wide interest about our boarding house and College within the community. Still to come this year in Term 3 are the Riverland Field Days in Barmera from 15 to 16 September, and Yorke Peninsula Field Days in Paskeville from 26 to 28 September.

Off to Marymount’s Swimming Carnival

The boarding community recently received this email from Jonny Williams. Jonny was Dux of SHC in 2013 and is currently studying Civil and Structural Engineering courses in Sweden. Jonny was working, very successfully, as a tutor in the Boys Boarding House before going overseas to study this year. “Shane, I remember you mentioning you would like to hear how things are going whilst I’m on exchange so I thought I would email and tell you a bit about things here in Lund. I’ve been here for about 2 and a half months, so I’m pretty settled in here and am used to the way things work here now. Lund is a great town for students, as most of the city revolves around the university, which contains almost half the population. It’s amazing how much they have going on here for students in terms of events, clubs, get togethers etc. - most of which is run by students through “nations”. University here is fairly similar to home, however, they run semesters in 2 terms, splitting the workload so you have less to focus on at one time, which is great for workload and managing time but can make courses feel a little rushed. Other than university here, I’ve been making the most of being around hundreds of other exchange students, forming new relationships and networking with people from around the world. It’s interesting to see how cultures and people vary all over the world. So far I have visited places within Sweden (Stockholm and Malmö), as well as Copenhagen in Denmark and Finnish Lapland and in the coming month I have trips planned to Italy (Amalfi Coast), Spain (Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona) and England. I hope to be able to build on this more once the semester is over as well. At this stage I don’t have a ticket booked to come home, but the university semester in Adelaide begins on the 24th of July, so I will definitely be back by then. I hope that all is going well in the boarding house and the new boarders have settled in nicely. I look forward to hearing from you soon.”

For boarders in Years 10 to 12, parent teacher interviews for boarding families is scheduled for Friday 19 May from 2pm to 4pm. This date coincides with the first Exeat for Term 2. Instructions will be emailed to you from the College in the week prior to enable you to book your teacher interview requests online. For those boarding families unable to attend in person on this date, please make contact with your child’s teacher via email or by phoning Reception on 8350 2500. We hope that many of you will be able to travel down on this date to meet with your child’s teachers.
