An MBA allows you to develop the skills and qualities necessary to be a true business leader. Alongside your core modules and electives, the Imperial MBA includes a variety of activities designed to develop your communication and presentation skills, team work and awareness of the business world and the nature of leadership.
Practical learning
Imperial Innovation Challenge This project links the Business School with the expertise of other Imperial faculties such as Natural Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take on global grand challenges in health, energy, environment and the digital universe. Your goal in this intensive, one week learning laboratory is to apply innovative thinking to complex international issues and generate new, exciting business solutions.
Group projectTeamwork will be a valuable asset whatever your intended career path, and the group projects within your MBA will naturally develop your skills. You will be able to choose between two three month projects:
Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Design Project This project allows you to build your own multi-disciplinary team to explore the key challenges of introducing products and services to market. Collaborating with key researchers and practitioners in the field, you will investigate the commercial potential for your own idea, or one being developed by one of our project partners, including Imperial Innovations and the Royal College of Art. By the end of the journey you will have explored the process of preparing a start-up and be experienced in how to exploit the power of design and innovation to transform ideas into a new product or service.
or
Consulting Project This project will see you working with an external organisation on a real-world consulting project. Building on your innovative thinking and entrepreneurial abilities, you will work together to produce recommendations that will be presented directly to the client.
A wide range of organisations have taken part and recent clients have included Cisco, Shell, GSK and Thomson Reuters. This project is a perfect opportunity to prove your talent in front of business professionals, putting into practice what you’ve learnt in the classroom.

“We had a great opportunity to work with other people outside the Business School. During the Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Design project, we worked with Imperial College Engineering faculty and the Royal College of Art where we explored the many great engineering innovations. This is something you can't find in any other Business School.”

Perspectives on PracticePerspectives on Practice is an individual, self-directed part of the programme that lets you make your own choice about the direction of your MBA. Reflecting on your MBA learning as you near the end of your studies, you will choose to undertake either an internship or an individual project.
Internship If you choose to undertake an internship, you will be supported by our Careers team to organise one with a company that you are interested in. You’ll be able to continue developing your practical skills while forming useful industry relationships. At the end of your internship you will submit a project based on your work.
or
Individual Project Alternatively, you may pick a client of your choice and conduct an independent project. This will allow you to develop your ideas on a topic of interest, most likely relevant to your own practice, by considering the implications of current thinking within an applied context.
CapstoneTailored to the interests and career aims of each class of MBA students, your capstone experience will round off your learning and reunite you with your classmates.

Global opportunities
Today’s markets are no longer localised. Competition is on a global scale and our teaching reflects this. Whilst studying on the MBA, you will explore global business by taking part in two international trips; one in Europe to expose you to European business and policy, and one to expose you to international markets. These are an integral part of the Full-Time MBA programme, with costs included in your tuition fees.
European Networking Trip During this visit to a key European city you will have the opportunity to explore business in a European Union context. Previous students have visited the EU’s capital city, Brussels, and had a chance to visit the European Commission and learn more about the EU’s business practices.
Global Experience Week The Global Experience Week allows you to immerse yourself in the business environment of another country. Together with the rest of your class, you will travel to explore business in an international context. Through a combination of visits to top local companies, as well as international companies based in the country, you will learn more about business from top executives. For example, the 2014–15 class went to China and met with companies as diverse as supermarket Tesco, internet search giant Baidu, Shanghai General Motors and advertising agency Wieden + Kennedy.
Exchange opportunitiesSelect students will be able to take part in our exchange programmes, giving you the opportunity to study abroad as part of your MBA.
Foreign language classesWith business taking place on an increasingly global scale, foreign language skills are highly sought after. You can complete one foreign language course, at no additional cost, alongside your MBA study. Classes available include: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Japanese and Mandarin.
“Our class spent a week in China which was absolutely brilliant. We travelled to Beijing and Shanghai and visited Western companies operating in China. Visiting the companies allowed me to see for myself the importance of business to China. I can feel the impact each day when I read the news and speak to colleagues and friends about China and its future.”

Carlos VitoriaFull-Time MBA 2012–13
Nationality: Spanish Pre-MBA employment: Project and Programme Manager, IRIDIUM Infrastructure Concessions (ACS Group) Post-MBA: Sungevity Europe, Strategy Consultant and Deloitte MCS Management Consultant
“The knowledge and soft skills that I acquired at the School made me a much more well-rounded and versatile business person. The MBA was fundamental for my career change from project management and civil engineering to management consulting. My year at the School also gave me exposure to other industries, such as renewable energy, that I had not worked in before.”
Jenny YaoFull-Time MBA 2004–05
Nationality: Chinese Pre-MBA employment: Manager, Liaocheng Neurosurgery Hospital, China Post-MBA: Director, KPMG China
“The MBA programme helped me to build my strengths in a number of areas, not only management theory and tools but also teamwork and people skills. After the MBA I worked in a number of change management, strategic and operational roles at hospitals in the UK, before moving back to China in early 2013 to take up new challenges as a partner and Head of Healthcare Consulting at KPMG China & HK. What I have achieved after my MBA is something I never imagined I could. It is definitely worth the investment as the MBA programme helped me to have a new career in a new country.”
