The complex and dynamic nature of business requires individuals who can develop and apply their professional and personal capabilities to lead and manage existing and future enterprises.

Brunel Business School seeks to provide you with the knowledge, experience and skills to achieve

such goals within a people-oriented and engaging learning environment.

I believe that in doing so the Brunel MBA can help you to truly enhance your potential and accelerate your career.

Just what is an MBA?The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is recognised worldwide as the pre-eminent business practice development qualification for aspiring senior managers.

The entire programme is designed to equip you with knowledge, skills, understanding, confidence and energy, to tackle the difficult demands which organisations face in today’s rapidly changing business environment. Our MBA graduates consider the programme to be highly stimulating, intellectually challenging and a genuinely life-changing experience. And it is well respected by employers too.

Will an MBA work for me?Surveys indicate students choose an MBA for a variety of reasons: some say they are looking to advance their career with their current employer, whilst others hope to do so elsewhere; most, when pressed, admit to wanting to earn more money. Research findings indicate that an MBA can help you achieve these aspirations, and that most full-time MBAs who attend a good school can reasonably expect to recover their fees from enhanced earnings within four to six years (Source: Hobsons, www.hobsons.co.uk). Indeed, surveys of our own students certainly suggest they earn more after they graduate, and almost all secure a better job.

Alternatively, you may be considering an MBA because you want to start or expand your own business. More than 10 percent of candidates choose to become an entrepreneur and start their own business (Source: 2005 TopMBA Recruiters Survey). Certainly a number of our own students have used their MBA to set up or further their careers in such a way.

Why should I choose the Brunel MBA?We naturally believe there are many good reasons why you should choose the Brunel MBA, such as our AMBA accreditation; our expertise and reputation; the relevant and up-to-date curriculum; the programme’s structure; our MBA student body; Brunel’s new and modern facilities and excellent geographic location. But don’t just rely on this brochure to answer your questions: why not take the opportunity to visit us and meet our staff and students in person? You can find out more information on open events by visiting our website at: www.brunel.ac.uk/mba.

We look forward to meeting you soon.

The Executive Part-time ProgrammeThe Executive part-time programme is designed for candidates who need to combine MBA study with a full-time job. If studying part-time, we expect most candidates to complete their MBA within two years, but in certain circumstances it is possible to defer modules into a third year. A fast-track option is also available.

Rather than day-release or evening classes, the part-time study mode has been structured so that lectures, seminars, skills sessions and group work are concentrated into two-day and one-day workshops held on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the year. We believe this helps minimise the time you have to be away from work.

ModulesCorporate and Business FinanceThis module provides you with a thorough understanding of the world of finance in the global era; it also explains the concepts of risk and the cost of capital and teaches the process of financial management in the short and long term. You will learn the general principles of management accounting as well as systematic techniques for analysing and evaluating the financial health of an organisation including the construction and interpretation of financial statements.

Leading People and Managing OrganisationsAll good organisations consider their employees to be their key resource and all good managers should be leaders of their staff. This module explains the key issues and challenges that relate to people in organisations. It develops your understanding of people’s behaviour in an organisational context and teaches the theories and practices of effective people management. You will also gain a better appreciation of the significance of human resources for the successful operation of organisations and understand how best to motivate, lead, interview, communicate at work and manage conflicts of interest.

Strategic Marketing ManagementBy the end of this module, you will have a thorough knowledge of all the principal marketing concepts as well as how marketing has evolved as a business discipline following the introduction of new technology. You will also appreciate how best to evaluate the effectiveness of marketing activities, conduct a marketing audit and construct a marketing plan.

Operations ManagementDuring this module you will explore the tools and techniques for managing operations. You will gain a greater awareness and understanding of the strategic issues involved in the way organisations manage their operational activities and facilities – both within and beyond the organisation’s boundaries. You will also develop a better appreciation of the relation between operations/service design choices and performance imperatives.

Executive Perspectives on Information SystemsOver the course of this module, you will examine the debate on the role of information systems in globalisation and sustainable strategic advantage from intra-firm and extra-firm perspectives. You will also gain an understanding of the changing nature of information systems, new business practices and working practices in the competitive marketplace. The module will also teach how to leverage effectively information tools through an understanding of current practices, trends and the effects of IT on organisations and their trading partners.

Over the course of your MBA at Brunel you will study eight core modules and undertake a business project on a topic of your own choosing. The modules cover what are considered to be the core business activities. Teaching is by a mix of lectures, interactive case discussions, small group and plenary discussions and presentations, role-plays, videos and, where practical, guest speakers. It should be emphasised that the aim of the MBA programme is not only to enhance your knowledge of management theories and techniques but also to improve your critical thinking and decision-making. You will be expected to contribute your own experience of business and learn from the experience of your fellow students.

International BusinessThis module considers the many challenges, both ethical and instrumental, of managing complex international operations and organisational processes across borders. It will also provide you with an understanding of the mechanisms for entering new markets and emerging economies and the consequent need to cope constructively with diversity, risk and uncertainty.

Corporate and Competitive StrategyOver the course of this module, you will be introduced to concepts and methodological tools and techniques for analysing an organisation’s strategic position. You will gain a thorough appreciation of the issues and challenges that confront managers responsible for the strategic management of organisations in complex, changing and uncertain conditions.

Managing for the FutureManaging for the Future has been specifically designed to offer you an opportunity to tailor your MBA to your own specific circumstances and/or the needs of your employer. The module allows the opportunity to apply systematic enquiry methods and imaginative approaches to identify and evaluate the implications of future-oriented issues and challenges and to formulate appropriate responses them.

However, it goes beyond the concept of narrowly-focused electives, with an approach that challenges MBA participants to select and integrate their later-stage learning and it will be up to you – in conjunction with your fellow students – to determine precisely the issues you study.

The Business ProjectTo complete your MBA, you will be required to undertake extensive research into a business and management challenge of particular interest to you and analyse your findings in depth. You can draw from issues that you have come up against in your career to date, consider those challenges that your organisation currently faces, or explore an issue outside your own experience. It is up to you. The project provides another opportunity for you to tailor your MBA to your own specific needs, demonstrate your business acumen and apply the knowledge and skills you have learnt throughout the MBA programme.

Before you embark on your project, we provide comprehensive guidance and then coach you right the way through from first draft to your completed 12,000 word report. Recent projects undertaken by our students have included:

To help prepare you for the MBA – whether part-time or full-time – we run a three-day orientation that introduces the key concepts of MBA study and imparts valuable advice on how to study effectively.

Career DevelopmentAchieving your career aspirations is no doubt one of the reasons you are considering an MBA. At Brunel your future career is very important to us and the MBA benefits from its own dedicated career development and advisory services. A full programme of career development activities including one-to-one sessions is available. In addition, staff from Brunel’s Placement and Careers Centre regularly organise careers workshops and employer presentations, and all students have access to information on a wide range of opportunities. The Placement and Careers Centre is one of only three Matrix Excellence accredited university careers services in the country. Careers guidance is available for both UK and overseas students.

Saradha, from Sri Lanka, graduated in 2006.

“Globalrecognition, valueformoney, and flexibility were the key factors I wanted from my MBA provider. I chose Brunel because of its AMBA accreditation, which is recognised worldwide. It was important to me as an international student that the qualification I obtained stood out in whatever market I decided to pursue my career.

The MBA gave me a new perspective and made me think more critically.

What you get out of your MBA is a reflection of what you put into it. Rather than spoon-feeding academic content, the Brunel MBA guides you along a focused path to enable you to coach yourself to be the best that you can be.

The main advantage for an international student of studying in the UK is the exposure and experience you gain from a mature commercial market. The complexity and competitiveness of the UK business environment offers managers a wealth of opportunities.”

Unlike many other academic programmes of study, the success of an MBA programme is not simply down to the knowledge and expertise of your tutors – your fellow students play an important part too.

MBAlearninginvolvesnotjustlecturesandguidedreadingbutalsointeractiveworkshops, groupdiscussions, presentations and role-playing exercises. It is therefore important to be studying alongside studentswhocaneachcontributeinsightfulbusinessexperienceandspecialistexpertise.Forthisreason, we are proud that the Brunel MBA attracts students from a particularly broad range of backgrounds, in terms of their commercial sector, professional background and nationality.

Kuldip, from the UK, is on the part-time programme which finishes in 2008.

“As a manager in the purchasing and production department of a company in the aviation sector, an MBA appealed to me for two reasons: firstly, I had always enjoyed studying so I was attracted by the challenge of the academic rigour of the programme; secondly, I thought it would help with my career progression.

So far, I am really enjoying the course. I’ve found it highly fulfilling and it has certainly helped my personal development and given me greater confidence. It has also proved a great way of meeting new people and of gaining a better insight into how a wide range of businesses are run. Consequently, I’ve now made a large number of useful contacts.

If you are considering an MBA, my recommendation would be to go for it. It is certainly hard work but with thorough planning and self-discipline, the workload is genuinely manageable. The best thing about Brunel is that you’re really treated as an individual not as a number. Everyone knows my name and I’ve received excellent support from both the academic and administrative staff.”Job Function of Brunel MBA students 2005-7

The Brunel Business School

As befits a university with Brunel’s history and reputation, research is at the heart of all we do. It underpins and informs most of the courses we offer; this is as true of the Brunel MBA as it is with our other postgraduate programmes.

Brunel Business School is currently home to five internationally-renowned Research Centres:

Brunel Research into Enterprise, Innovation, Sustainability and Ethics (BRESE)This research centre looks at the ways in which businesses and other organisations are innovating to meet the combined social, economic and environmental challenges and expectations of the rapidly changing societies in which they operate. BRESE have developed a distinctively novel approach to research on innovation and enterprise that draws especially upon social science research on the role of networks and interactions; and, members have also successfully pursued research into the themes of environmental sustainability and ethics in relation to the activities of the business enterprise.

Centre for Research in Emotion Work (CREW)CREW research members have expertise in emotion work, identity and gender issues within organisations and the workplace. Reflecting the increasing dominance of the service sector in contemporary economies, much of the research addresses the emotional interactions between service providers and consumers such as local and national support, care and service agencies (Hospitals, Police forces to name but two). The centre also investigates the nature of entrepreneurship activity within knowledge intensive firms.

Centre for Research into Consumer and Social Marketing (CREAM)This centre brings together unique research strengths in corporate and ethical branding, corporate identity, retailing and creativity within the general marketing context. CREAM research members have explored the branding of professional services, corporate re-branding and cultural alignment with specific applied research to customer behaviour within retail environments (shopping centres), electronic retailing and on-line shopping to name a few.

Information Systems Evaluation and integration (ISEing)ISEing as a centre aims to investigate, evaluate and communicate solutions to managerial issues in complex private and public sector environments. Members of ISEing all pursue a range of research interests embracing aspects of business information systems, technology and communication which aim to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and performance via ICT. As such the centre has several key focuses in the area ofeGovernment,InformationSystemsEvaluation,InformationSystems within Organisations and eLearning.

Centre for International Business and Strategy in Emerging Markets (CIBSEM)CIBSEM is a multi-disciplinary research centre focussing on all aspects of international business and strategy in emerging markets. Recently research has been undertaken on the internationalisation strategies of firms in emerging markets in addition to production and service operations within new industrial sectors and the impact of international investments on the host economy and local firms. An associated and growing area of research is in the specific design and analysis of supply chain systems, networks and strategies to enhance and develop core competencies within global organisations.
