Grammar in the Context of Narrative-- Presenter: Sandra Elbaum Room 2005 Higher-Ed/Adult-Ed Sandy Elbaum will demonstrate how high interest narrative captures the attention of students and motivates them to analyze grammar. She will demonstrate how a textbook can come alive by using informative, entertaining stories to engage students and increase learning. Sandra Elbaum-Bio: Grammar in Context author Sandra Elbaum taught ESL internationally and at Truman College, Chicago, for 36 years. She holds an M.A. in TESOL from the University of Illinois. Affiliation: Truman College X-words: Keys to Understanding the English Verbs-- Presenter: Akiko Ota Room 2014 K-12, Higher-Ed/Adult-Ed This workshop reintroduces English verb patterns from the perspective of X-word grammar, a classroom application of Robert Allen’s Sector Analysis. X-word grammar will pleasantly surprise the teachers and students by the simplicity, regularity, and beauty of the English verb. Akiko Ota, Bio: Akiko Ota is an academic specialist and the educational technology coordinator at the English Language Center Michigan State University. She attained an M.A. TESOL and Ed.D. Educational Leadership. Instructors will gain implementable ideas to develop students’ academic and life skills. Materials will be made available. April Wilcoxen, Bio: April Wilcoxen teaches in the academic English program, WESL, at Western Illinois University. She has taught English for over 10 years and received her M.A. TESOL from The Global Pressures of English Hegemony Plenary Speaker: Amanda Montes, Ph.D. Professor, Chicago State University Amanda Montes is an Assistant Professor in the Bilingual Education program at Chicago State University. 2016 ITBE Convention Proposals Open Now!

The transition to our new website has finally finished and the 2016 ITBE Convention proposal

system has finally been opened. You can find the submission process here:

Submissions will be accepted from now until November 30th. Acceptance notification will go

out mid to late December.

If you are submitting a proposal remember that if accepted your abstract will be your session

description in our convention book, so use those 50 words wisely! Also, personal biographies

should be written in the third person.

The theme of our 42nd convention is going to be “Expanding Horizons” where attendees will

be able to expand their skill sets for their future goals. We hope to see you attend and possibly

even present!
