Hello everyone! My name is Emily Lyons and I will be representing the Illinois Junior Holstein Association as the 2007 Illinois Holstein Dutchess. I hail from Boone-Winnebago Junior Holstein Club where I have been an active member for many years.

My family and I live on a small farm just outside of Rockford. I am currently 18 years old and am a freshman at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, majoring in animal sciences.

I am truly honored to have been selected as your new Holstein Dutchess. The contestants this year were all extremely qualified and did an excellent job. I would like to thank Vicki Stohlquist for coordinating the contest and all of the judges.

As a Dutchess contestant, I was able to sit up close to one of the best State Shows ever. I would like to commend the exhibitors for bringing out such a high-quality group of animals. Congratulations to all the winners. While at the State Show, I also had the pleasure of meeting the first ever Dutchess, Karen Harms. Also I was able to attend the Illinois State Fair and

pass out ribbons and awards at the Junior and Open Holstein Shows. Congratulations to all of the exhibitors there also. I would also like to thank Marla Behrens for allowing me to work in the Dairy Building while I was at the State Fair. It was fun getting to talk to adults and children about the Holstein Industry.

Congratulations to the Junior members who went to the 2007 National Holstein Convention in Nashville, TN. They did a great job representing our state, a special Congrats to the Senior Dairy Bowl Team for winning their division. Another note on Junior issues, as you may already know, the Juniors are selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a print of Holstein Royalty by Larry Schultz. Tickets are being sold for $5 each or 3/$10. The winner will receive either the print or

Finally!!! We have good milk prices and they may actually stay decent for a while. The question everyone is asking them selves is what opportunities should you take advantage of?

Certainly there are all kinds of options to consider. One opportunity that is always available is adding some top genetics to your herd. I realize that most of you already have top cow families that you are working with in your herd. One thing we have to keep in mind is the pace at which genetics are advancing.

a cash prize. The drawing will be held at the State Senior Convention in Sycamore, IL on De cember 6-7. If you don’t already have your tickets, please purchase some.

Good luck to everyone at the fall shows and for those with upcoming classifications. Hopefully, I will see everyone at the fall events!

Emily Lyons

As of the week ending August 18, the Holstein Association had registered 13,811 ET calves this year. The 13,811 calves represent the best of the best. Before embryo transfer, a breeder, with the help of good a genetic base, good mating, and good luck, could stay competitive. But ET has propagated the genes of the best cow families to the point that it is almost impossible to ever catch the leaders, no matter what type of pedigree you are talking about.

Yes lighting will continue to strike and cow families will always emerge from nowhere. But if you bet on lighting striking you are going to lose. If you want to be part of breeding and merchandising the best of the best you should consider buying into one of

the greeat cow families, and what better time than when you hopefully have a little extra cash to do it with.

If you study the herds most of us consider to be at the top already you will find that even they add new genetics from time to time. The State Sale and others are being put together right now and I can assure you this fall will offer some of the best cattle ever sold. Study the advertising and catalogs, and consult people you trust for information and advice. Yes cattle may be a bit higher this fall than in the past but there will still be good buys out there.

The Illinois State Holstein Picnic was held Sunday September 9th at Stone Ridge Dairy in Mansfield, Illinois. The weather couldn’t have been better, as approximately 300 Holstein enthusiasts flocked to George and Kara Kasbergen’s 3,000-cow dairy from all corners of the state.

“I thought it was a great picnic…one of the best in a long time,” said Illinois Holstein Association President Jim Schumacher. The attendance was also one of the best we have had in recent years, and the hosts were extremely gracious.”

The day began at 11:00 with hayride tours around the farm. As guests loaded the wagons, the group moved towards the office and milking parlor. The parlor experts from Kaeb Sales were stationed there to talk about the milking equipment and milking procedure on the farm.

The group then loaded back onto the hay wagons, driven by fellow Heart-of-Illinois club member Lynn

Zehr. They went through the large freestall barn for everyone to experience first-hand how the rest of the commercial herd is housed.

The next stop was the feed commodity barn, where none other than Dr. Mike Hutjens was stationed to talk about the TMR constituents.

As one would expect, Mike had a Penn State shaker box on hand to talk about particle size of the ration as well. Many people were awed by the large pile of feed in the bunker silo and the immense quantities of feed.

“I believe it was good for our group to see a farm this size. The industry is leading towards big farms, so it is good for people to look at the dairy, talk to the owners, and to see what is both good and bad,” said Jim. “Our members were exposed to something a little different in the industry, and that can never hurt you.”

Once the first groups returned from the tours, the crowd was seated for lunch. After welcoming everyone to the farm, Kara Kasbergen instructed everyone towards the food lines and provided the invocation. Like everything else at the dairy, the lunch was second to none, with the California-style tri-tip steak being a favorite among the group.

While everyone was seated in the tent, there were several Illinois Holstein Association members who made a few comments after lunch. Emcee for the day, Mike Hutjens first introduced and thanked the entire Kasbergen family for their generosity and class for hosting the picnic. Mike then called on Jim Schumacher to welcome the

group, followed by comments from Larry Kleiner, National Holstein Association Representative; Bob Fruend, State Sale Convention Chair; Linda Drendel, State Convention Coordinator from Tri-County; and Marla Behrens, Midwest Dairy Association.

While they still had the crowd’s attention, the junior members had their worker’s auction. Although it’s typically held at state show, the junior members all agreed the time and location was ideal for the change this year. After the auction, the Kasbergens raffled off several door prizes to their guests.

Throughout the afternoon, the group continually roamed around the new show barn, situated right beside tent where the group had finished eating. Based on comments from several top Holstein breeders, many agreed that it was among the best show barns they had seen for a modern set-up. Among the cattle in the impressive new facility were some of the Kasbergen kids’ summer show animals.

“The cattle here are not just bought to show, but to make money and to help the industry,” said Lee Oltmanns, independent dairy consultant from Nokomis, Illinois. “It is good for Illinois to have

someone like George in the industry who is really friendly and who helps Illinois Holsteins.”

As the crowd gradually dwindled, many agreed it will be hard to top this event next year. However, the positive atmosphere of the picnic left everyone excited about the picnic and the industry as a whole.

“The state picnic has always been one of our better attended events, and I thought this one made it even more exciting,” said Jim. “I think it will regenerate excitement for the picnic in future years.”

This year at the Illinois Championship Holstein Show, all eyes were on the winning four-year-old and five-year-old cows that were pulled out for Grand Champion. Shortly after Judge Roger Turner made Olmar Roy Crystal Grand Champion and Shoremar S Alicia 2-ETN Reserve Grand Champion, owner Jeff Butler was beaming with satisfaction from ringside.

While few people have owned both Grand and Reserve Champion at the Illinois State Show, Jeff is no stranger to the winner’s circle. He currently owns approximately 70 head of registered Holsteins, many of which are known by their household names by Holstein enthusiasts throughout the country for their showring success.

Although Jeff has owned his fair share of class winners at the state and national levels, his involvement in registered Holsteins began like many other Illinois junior members.

The Early Years ShowingJeff grew up on a grain and dairy farm

in Chebanse, Illinois with his parents and brother, Jim and sisters, Julie and Jennifer. Jeff and his siblings were strongly involved in 4-H, FFA, and dairy judging. They showed at the state fair and state show ever since they were kids. His dad was also quite active in the Illinois State Holstein Association, serving as

one of the past state presidents who helped unite the northern and southern shows to the one state show that exists today.

While showing as a junior, Jeff said they were always competitive in the junior show, and in 1985 Butlerview had the Reserve Grand Champion at the Illinois State Show with a Pinehurst Copyright daughter. Then in 1987 they exhibited the Grand Champion animal.

Later in 1989 and 1990, they started showing the kind that did well at national shows. Their first All-American Nomination was in 1989 with a senior calf, Helenlane Katie Merv.

“The next year, I talked to a guy from Quebec who fitted our calf at Harrisburg and Madison the year before. He said there was a heifer I just had to look at up in Canada,” Jeff explained. He was in his junior year at the University of Illinois at the time, but Jeff made the trip to Quebec to purchase the heifer, Bermaska Starbuck Chancel.

He had tremendous success with Chancel in the U.S. She was named All-American and Reserve All-Canadian as a fall calf, and then went on to win Junior Champion honors at World Dairy Expo as a senior yearling. Although he sold her that fall, she came back

the next year to be named All-American and All-Canadian as a senior-2-year-old.

“She was maybe the greatest 2-year-old ever,” said Jeff. “I think she was the first heifer to be Junior Champion at Madison and then come back to win the two-year-old class.”

Around that time, Jeff was finishing up college and originally wanted to milk cows on the home farm but his parents encouraged his siblings and him to take jobs off-farm to ensure a more consistent form of income.

Currently, Jeff resides in Springfield, Illinois and works for a company that sells fertilizer, chemicals and fungicides to large farms. Additionally, he is in a partnership

with in a business out of Wisconsin called Calves-4-U, where they own several hundred recipient animals. People will send embryos from all over the country to put in these animals.

Once Jeff was able to establish himself better in the professional world, he began buying into more and more cow families that could do well on the national show circuit.

However, before investing in such elite cows, they have to meet certain criteria.

“Two things I am a stickler on…I like

Butlerview Holsteins

“Two things I am a stickler on... I like cows with really good udders and they have to have an open, dairy rib with some style.”

In a League of its Own

Page 8 October 2007

Oct_07_Herald.indd 8 9/18/07 10:41:22 AM

“With the timing of the sale and the quality of the animals, we think it could be a sale for the ages.”

cows with really good udders and they have to have an open, dairy rib with some style,” Jeff explained. “In heifers I like a real dairy, open rib and a chiseled front end. They need to walk up hill, have a long neck and lots of style.”

With those ideas in the back of his mind, Jeff has become involved with some of the most popular cow families in the world.

Alicia and AdeenIf you say “Alicia” in the dairy industry,

there is no mistaking which cow you are talking about. Shoremar S Alicia (3E-97) may be one of the most respected Holstein cows today, and surely the most world-renown cow that Jeff Butler has owned.

Jeff originally acquired Alicia after he purchased her full sister, Ms Kingstead Chief Adeen (EX-94). “I bought Adeen with Lance Ruppert at Callum McKinven’s first dispersal in Canada,” Jeff said.

Shortly after Alicia emerged on the scene, and when she started to make a name for herself, it quickly drew Jeff’s attention.

“I had heard about this Alicia cow, but had never seen her,” commented Jeff. “I went to Ontario to see her in March of 2000, and that was when I bought her with Kingstead Farms and Howard Binder.”

While some may think it would be a gamble to make a large investment in such prolific cows, Jeff didn’t have any doubts about his decisions.

“Starbuck Ada was one of our favorite cows around in the late 80’s and early 90’s, so I felt confident to buy Adeen and Alicia,” Jeff explained. Aitkenbrae Starbuck Ada is the dam of both Adeen and Alicia.

Currently, both Adeen and Alicia are housed at Trans Ova Genetics, Iowa.

Alicia 2 and CrystalAfter Alicia was named World Champion

in 2000 and Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair, the owners decided to clone her through Cyagra in Pennsylvania.

“Ever since the clone was a baby calf, she not only resembled Alicia in her makeup, but also in color and mannerisms,” Jeff explained. “It is really interesting to see how similar they really are.”

Shoremar S Alicia 2-ETN developed into an impressive young cow, scoring VG-88 as a two-year-old, but they didn’t think she was developed quite well-enough to show her that year. However, this year she was ready for the showring, and claimed the title

of Reserve Grand Champion at the 2007 Illinois Championship Holstein Show.

“She calved in December last year and has really developed since she was dry,” Jeff said. “She got bigger, deeper in the barrel, and also got more spring to her barrel.”

Today, Alicia 2 is scored Ex-92, the maximum score for a 2nd calf cow. She is housed at Doug and Melanie Nifong’s farm in Orfordville, Wisconsin.

While everyone watching from the rail at the Illinois State Show had to admire the power and style of Alicia 2, she may have been overshadowed a bit by the silky, black five-year-old that beat Alicia 2 for Grand Champion honors.

Olmar Roy Crystal, with her tremendous udder and dairy quality, made a logical show winner for Judge Turner.

While she was right on for the July show, she had come a long way from earlier in the year.

“She calved the 1st of September last year, but had a DA and got really thin. She almost died; we had to take her to the UW-Madison vet school. It took until this spring to get her body back,” said Jeff, who has owned Crystal for 2 years now.

Jeff originally saw Crystal during World Dairy Expo at Madison as a junior 3-year-old. “I think she stood 3rd or 4th, but she was my favorite cow in the class,” Jeff recalled. “I’d been thinking about her, but everyone said I couldn’t get her bought.”

However, he was persistent with the issue and finally was able to buy half of her with the breeder of the cow, Olmar Farms of Minnesota.

Shortly after the recent Illinois State Show, Crystal returned to her home at Doug and Melanie Nifong’s in Wisconsin, and scored

94 points, the maximum score for a cow in her 3rd lactation.

Parade of Perfection SaleWith the recent success of the Butlerview-

owned animals, Jeff felt the time had come to have a sale to offer progeny of his cows to other Holstein breeders. Thus, the Butlerview Parade of Perfection sale has been set for March 1, 2008 in Elkhorn, Wisconsin.

“I thought with the amount of animals I have, it would be a good time to sell everything when prices are good,” explained Jeff. “You only get one or two chances to cash in, and since I have two younger children to raise at home, and with the popularity of Alicia and the Adeens, I thought I would go ahead and sell all things less than six years

of age. Milk prices look like they will stay really good, so it is a great time to get the most value for my animals.”

In the upcoming sale, Jeff says he plans to sell

8-10 daughters of Alicia, 8-10 daughters of Adeen, as well as several daughters from Pfaffs Gibson Rally (EX-92), Olmar Roy Crystal (EX-94), Vital-I Integrity Anastasia (EX-95), Wegnerlann Gabby (EX-94), and Combination Jed Erica (2E-94).

Along with his own animals, Jeff plans to feature twenty elite guest consignments to engage additional interest.

“I am excited to say we have a Goldwyn out of Ashlyn, a daughter of Apple-Red, a Durham from Jed Debra, a Goldwyn from Reginia, a Red Rampage from Marlene-Red, and daughters from Liberty Rae and Idee Lustre,” said Jeff.

“With the timing of the sale and quality of the animals, we think it could be a sale for the ages.”

The Illinois Holstein Association is pleased to announce the 2007 Illinois Championship Show Dedication to Ron and Karen Schaufelberger. Ron and Karen have been extremely involved with registered Holsteins in Illinois over the years.

Although Ron is known throughout the country as an elite Holstein breeder, he began his involvement at a very young age. His first registered Holstein began as a 4-H project in 1956. Ten years later, he and Karen were married on February 19, 1966. After their marriage, Karen was a legal secretary until the birth of their first child, Ronda, in July of 1967. To keep Karen busy, Ron bought her 500 chickens, and for several years she sold eggs...enough to buy a NEW car. The chicken house was later converted to a calf barn.

Ron farmed with his Dad until 1974 when he and Karen built a double four swingline milking parlor and began milking 37 cows. They made some improvements and added to the herd over the years, and in 2006, after 39 years of milking cows, the herd of 125 cows and 100 acres was sold to their son-in-law and daughter, Steve and Emily Laesch.

Some of their Holstein activities and accomplishments include

the following:Showed at local and state shows while kids were juniors Regular consignors to state sale and CCC Held several district offices State Holstein director and was on executive committee State Vice-President/President 1994-1996 Served as chairman of IHA State Show, State Sale and Membership Karen chaired Dutchess Committee Co-chair of Junior Youth Activities - has donated Senior Boys Showmanship Award several years Both served on various state committees Delegate to national convention numerous times National Holstein Director 1998-2005 - Chaired FAIR Committee 1980 Outstanding Young Breeder Award 1980 Grand Champion Cow at IL State Fair 1983 Land of Lincoln Champion at IL State Fair Hosted state picnics in 1985 and 2006 Sponsor trophies for local and state shows

Ron has served on the local and state DHIA boards, the U of I External Advisory Committee, and the board of First Christian Church, where he and Karen teach Sunday School. They continue to grain farm with son David, and Ron is an Area Dairy Representative with Alta Genetics and Karen is currently the Illinois Website Reporter.

Ron and Karen are parents of 3 children, Ronda Szymanski, Emily Laesch and David. They, along with the three grandchildren, Joshua and Rebecca Laesch and Sam Burgmann, are considered their greatest accomplishment.

“My parents have dedicated their lives to the Holstein Association, at both the state and national level. While growing up, we showed cows many times at the Illinois State Holstein Show,” said Ron and Karen’s daughter, Emily Laesch. “I know they are honored to have the 2007 Illinois State Holstein Show dedicated to them.”

Oct_07_Herald.indd 15 9/18/07 10:42:49 AM

Hello Illinois Holstein Enthusiasts. My name is Stephanie Aves, and I am the daughter of Kevin and Julie Aves of Poplar Grove. Together with my parents and my brother, Kyle, we own and operate St-Yle Holsteins.

The dairy industry has been a major part of my life since the day I was born. Since that day, I could be found out in the barn helping with any job a youngster could do. As time flew by these jobs and responsibilities have developed into goals. When I was just three years old, shortly after my farm accident occurred, I was in the Harvard Milk Days show for peewee showmanship. Since then, I have started to make my way on the tanbark trail to more and more shows every year.

As I have e x p e r i e n c e d many things in the dairy industry, I have also become involved in 4-H and FFA. I am currently the Udder 4-H Club President. In High School,

I was Chapter FFA President and the 2006-2007 Section 6 President, both of which I retired from in June. Both of these two youth organizations have left memorable footprints and qualities needed to succeed in both life and the dairy industry. Throughout High School I participated in cheerleading, basketball and volleyball. I was involved in many clubs and activities too.

Currently I am a member of the FFA Alumni and have one more year in 4-H left. After finishing with 4-H I plan to say involved with the area 4-H programs helping with clinics, club activities, judging contests and leasing animals to members. This year, I have four members that I am leasing show heifers to. Wow, it is quite an interesting task to teach all of them about the dairy industry and the showing aspect of the industry

This fall I will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Platteville majoring in Agricultural Education and Elementary Education. After attending college I plan to return home to farm and continue my involvement in the dairy and agriculture industries.

Hello, my name is Emily Lyons. I am 18 years old and the daughter of Brian and Lori

Lyons. Together with my parents, sisters, Erin and Haley, and brother, Matthew, I live outside of Rockford on a small farm.

My involvement with Holsteins began at a young age. My older sister and I loved to feed the baby calves, and because we typically only had one bottle calf at a time we would fight over who got to hold the bottle. When I was old enough to join 4-H, I picked out a “perfect calf ” at the Stephenson County’s Sizzler Sale. Finally I had a calf of my very own to feed, wash, brush and love. I have to say she had the whitest white and the shiniest coat from all the animals at our place because of my elbow grease.

Time flies as I have been a member of the Centerville Knot-Ketchers 4-H Club for 10 years. 4-H has offered many learning opportunities and the opportunity to travel with other dairy kids from around the state. I was a member of the fourth place quiz bowl team and the twelfth place judging team state 4-H teams competing at NAILE in 2005, the third place quiz bowl team at World Dairy

The 2007 Illinois Holstein Dutchess Contest was again held in conjunction with the Illinois State Show in Bloomington, Illinois. At 6:30 pm

on Wednesday, July 18, the four contestants were presented to judges Cheryl DeMent, Jackie Florent and Jim Schumacher as

contestants for the 2007 title. Mandy Middleton, Stephanie Aves, Emily Lyons and Kelly Sheehan began with a 5-10 minute presentation followed by questions from the judges and personal interviews. At 8:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, the girls were escorted into the show ring where Emily Lyons

was named the 2007 Illinois Holstein Dutchess. Kelly Sheehan was the 1st Runner-Up and Stephanie Aves was named Miss

Congeniality. The girls then spent the next two days distributing ribbons and trophies to class winners. Special thanks goes out to Vicki

Stohlquist who was again the chair for the contest this year.

Expo in 2006 and the eighteenth place judging team at World Dairy Expo in 2006.

I also joined the Boone-Winnebago Junior Holstein Club when I turned eight. I am grateful to Gail Pollard for expanding my interest in our junior club, especially dairy bowl. I have been a member of several Spring Thing dairy bowl teams and have represented Illinois five times at the National Holstein Convention as a member of the junior dairy bowl team, dairy jeopardy and senior dairy bowl teams. In the past years I have served as reporter and treasurer of the Illinois Junior Holstein Association.

While in high school, I was involved in National Honor Society, Renaissance, band, student council, the Class of 2007 and the theater department. I was named valedictorian, an Illinois State Scholar and received the President’s Award for Academic Excellence.

This fall I will be a freshman at the University of Illinois majoring in Animal Science. I plan to be involved in the Illini Dairy Club, Hoof and Horn Club, the Pre-Vet Club and Illini Pride. I also hope to someday be on the University’s Dairy Judging Team. After college, I plan to stay involved in the dairy industry, pursuing a career in veterinary medicine or agricultural law.

Hello! My name is Mandy Middleton, and I presently reside in New Douglas. This fall I will be a sophomore at Kaskaskia College majoring in dairy science/animal nutrition. After I graduate, I will attend SIU in Carbondale to receive my bachelor’s degree.

While attending KC, I’m very active in several activities such as KC Ag Club, PAS (Post-Secondary A g r i c u l t u r e S t u d e n t ) Organization, and the KC Dairy Judging Team. Recently I was appointed the 2007-2008 vice-

president of the KC Ag Club. Last February, I was selected to attend the National PAS Conference held in Idaho Falls. This October I will be attending the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin with my college dairy judging team. In January, our team competed in the Southwestern Exposition Livestock Show judging contest at Fort Worth, Texas. I received 10th place highest overall individual and our team placed 5th overall.

In addition, I am very active in my county 4-H club and enjoy showing cattle at the fairs. Last year, I won the Illinois State Fair 2006 Superior Young Dairy Producer Award. I really love showing because I meet so many people and gain so much experience.

I first became interested in dairy while working on my great-uncle’s dairy farm in 2004. I started as a part-time milk hand and milked the evening shifts after school. Currently, my farm duties include anything from milking cows to field work. However, my favorite chore on the farm would be feeding calves and mixing feed rations.

Perhaps after I graduate, I will take over the family dairy farm. It is a 3-generation farm, and I would like to see it continue in the future. I know that many dairy farms within Madison County have either sold out or quit, and I don’t want to see that happen to our family farm. I want to keep the dairy in the family and hopefully become the 4th generation to run it.

I’ve lived in Huntley all my life. My parents lived in town, but I spent every possible minute at my grandparent’s farms down the road. My earliest memories of the farm are when my cousins and I used to ride in the back of Grampa’s blue station wagon to take grain to the heifers in the pastures across town. When I was a little older, I followed Gramma around the barn post-dipping for her and feeding the calves. Now that I can handle more than a calf pail, I’ve taken on a few more responsibilities.

Since I attend school three and a half hours away, I’m not able to do a lot on the farm during the school year. But the first few weeks of summer, I set to work breaking all

the heifers on our farm to lead. From there we decided which animals we want to take to shows. My cousin and I have full responsibility of the showstring from sending in entried to fitting on show day. Now that the farm is two hours from my parent’s house, I still spend all my time in Orangeville.

When I’m not actually on the farm, I still stay very active in the dairy industry. The Illinois Junior Holstein Association has opened a lot of doors for me. As an officer at both district and state levels, I have gained responsibility and leadership skills. I attend the National Holstein Convention each year and quiz bowl is still one of my favorite activities. I have made many friends from around the country and learned quite a bit about the Holstein industry.

I attend school at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, and I am very active in the Illini Dairy Club (IDC). One of my favorite activities is working the IDC booth at the ACES open house or the Milk-A-Cow booth at state fair beause I really enjoy talking to kids and adults from suburban areas about our dairy industry. I participate in as many IDC activities as possible such as the Midwest ADSA conference that I attended this year. After graduation I plan to pursue a career in dairy nutrition or consulting, and then I plan to get my master’s degree.

I am thankful I am a part of an association

Superior Young Dairy Producer AwardThe 2007 Illinois State Fair Superior

Young Dairy Producer Award (SYDPA) program was held August 15, 16 & 18, in conjunction with the Illinois State Fair Jr. Dairy Show. Fifteen 4-H and/or FFA dairy project members from across Illinois took part in the event. This four-phase competition, emphasizing the youth’s knowledge of the dairy industry, awards each of the top five overall participants with a $1,000 scholarship. The 2007 scholarship recipients are:

Janell Baum, DeWitt CountyAngie Boesche, DeKalb CountyChris Kollmann, Clinton CountyJosh Huelsmann, Clinton CountyMikayla Krause, Piatt County

The $5,000 in scholarships was sponsored by Archer Daniels Midland, Decatur, and Monsanto, St. Louis, Mo. The Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders Association sponsored the individual plaques.

The first phase was a 50-question dairy management test. Questions were asked on dairy nutrition, health, reproduction, milk marketing, and other dairy related information. The top three contestants for this phase were Chris Kollmann, Josh Huelsmann andMikayla Krause.

The second phase was a four-station skill-a-thon on various aspects of the dairy

•••••

industry. Contestants had to identify feedstuffs, explain DHIA production records, answer questions about dairy cattle health, and identify dairy equipment. The top three contestants in the skill-a-thon were Janell Baum, Chris Kollmann and Josh Huelsmann.

The third phase of the contest was showmanship. During this phase contestants were evaluated on their ability to present their animal in front of the judge. The Purebred Dairy Cattle Association showmanship scorecard was used as the basis for determining points earned. The top three winners for this phase were Janell Baum, Chris Kollmann and Allison Telgmann.

The fourth phase of the Superior Young Dairy Producer Contest was a judging contest. The judging phase consisted of placing four classes of dairy cows and two classes of heifers. The top three contestants for this phase were Josh Huelsmann, Chris Kollmann and Mikayla Krause.

This year marked the 12th consecutive

year for the Superior Young Dairy Producer Award Program which has provided participating youth the opportunity to compete for $60,000 in college scholarships since its inception. The program is developed and coordinated by Dave Fischer, University of Illinois Extension Dairy Educator. The purpose of the contest is to create an educational activity that promotes youth development, career development, and personal growth through increased knowledge of the dairy industry.

The 2007 Illinois 4-H Invitational Dairy Cattle Judging Contest was held August 18 at the Illinois State Fair. The top 10 contestants at the Illinois State Fair 4-H Invitational Dairy Judging Contest were as follows:

results from the June contest were used to determine the four individuals who will represent Illinois 4-H in the 2007 National Contest at the World Dairy Expo in Madison on October 1.

Additionally, a team was selected to attend the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky on November 2-3, 2007. This team will compete in the dairy quiz bowl contest as well as the judging contest at NAILE. They were selected based on June dairy bowl contest results along with judging.

The Illinois 4-H Dairy Judging teams are sponsored by Illinois Milk Producers’ Association and Illinois 4-H Foundation and are coached by Dave Fischer, University of Illinois Extension Dairy Educator.

John H. (Jack) Bingham, a 1951 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Agriculture Dairy Science Department (currently the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences Department of Animal Sciences), retired in 1992 as one of the most respected Dairy Managers in Illinois history.

Born and raised on Buffalo Creek Dairy in northern Illinois, Bingham was Herdsman under the tutelage of A.C. “Whitey” Thompson at Hickory Creek Farms until its dispersal in 1954. He then served as Superintendent of the International Dairy Show in Chicago until 1957, followed by a partnership with Pat Williams using the PatRJack prefix.

In 1968 Bingham’s management career began in earnest when he oversaw the development and operation of Lamkinland, Illinois’ first large scale dairy operation, milking 900 registered Holsteins. From 1975 until his retirement, Bingham managed Golden Oaks, a renowned Registered Holstein operation with over 2,500 acres of farmland just north of Chicago.

Bingham’s career as a Dairy Manager was marked by a number of personal characteristics. He took a special interest in mentoring and encouraging young employees, providing a virtual classroom environment in which to learn the science and art of dairy management. His “students” went on to hold management positions at leading AI organizations as well as some of the premier Holstein herds in the United States. Additionally, Bingham served the larger dairy industry as President and long-time State Director of the Illinois Holstein Association, delegate to the National Holstein Convention, advisor to the University of Illinois Dairy Science Department, and Board Member for the World Dairy Expo in Madison.

Bingham always understood that a Dairy Manager has three constituents: the owner(s), the employees, and the cows. Success requires a combination of scientific knowledge in areas such as nutrition, reproduction, and genetics as well as people skills which are required to build and maintain a good team environment in which everyone’s needs are respected. As a reflection of that emphasis, the recipients of the John H. (Jack) Bingham Endowed Scholarships must understand the art and science of dealing with people and must demonstrate the willingness and ability to not only lead, but also cooperate with others in accomplishing tasks.

Recipients of the scholarships must understand the applied aspects of dairy science, ability to work with people, interest in dairy judging and the Illini Dairy Club, and demonstrate the willingness and ability to not only lead, but also cooperate with others in accomplishing tasks.

In recognition of Jack Bingham’s many accomplishments, an endowed fund has been established to provide scholarships to qualified students enrolled in the dairy option in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Contributions may be sent to the ACES Office

I apologize for these State Fair results being so lengthy but every exhibitor from McHenry County at State Fair had an exceptional year and each one deserves to be recognized for their outstanding dedication to showing quality dairy cattle, no matter what breed they choose to show.

I hope everyone has a great harvest season and good luck to those who will be continuing the show season at the national shows.

Sincerely, Amy Shanks

Mississippi Valley First of all there is a correction to last

issue’s graduates. High School grads are Niki Neisen and Keith Koch, and an additional college graduate is Lindsey Edwards. Some of our club members received a chuckle that Niki graduated from Keith Koch high school.

We held our district show during the Adams Co. Fair on July 26 with Ted Dement as the judge. There were 56 head shown broken down to 32 heifers and 24 cows. Results are listed elsewhere in this issue. We also had a judging contest at our district show with three classes and those results and premier exhibitor and breeder will be announced at our annual meeting.

showmanship winners. Assisting with ribbons and trophies was Laura Sorrill, (Sky-View-Acres) the 2007 Western Illinois Dairy Princess.

Sorrill was crowned on June 27 and Marissa Edwards (Hi-Blue) was first runner-up.Olivia Edwards competed in the 2007 Adams Co. Fair Queen Pageant and was awarded the best interview award. She is the daughter of Rick and Mary Edwards and granddaughter of Paul and Eadie Edwards.

Ken and Mary Koch (Kochnook) were awarded the Heritage Award, presented to a person or couple who promote the dairy industry. The Kochs have opened their farm for many years to hundreds of persons to educate them about the dairy industry.

At the Adams Co. 4-H show Cory Thorman swept house with showmanship, Grand Champion Heifer, Grand Champion Cow and Grand Champion Female. Others exhibiting included Garrett Edwards, Marissa Edwards, Aaron Weiman, and Niki Neisen.

At the newly formed section 11 FFA show, Niki Neisen won showmanship and junior champion, and Marissa Edwards won senior champion.

In the open show held on Saturday, July 28, Thorman’s cow Thorman Ruben Daisy was named Supreme Champion of the show. There were a total of 16 herd units representing four breeds.

Several members of the club worked in the Milk Shake stand during the Adams Co. Fair. We had the best bargain on the fairgrounds a 16-oz shake for $1.50 and we also sold bottled milk, sandwiches, and floats.

Club members have showed at the following fairs Lewis and Knox counties in Missouri; Heart of Illinois Fair, Peoria; Jersey Co., Jerseyville; and Logan Co. at Lincoln. At State Fair Cory Thorman, Andrew Mowen, and Frank and I, but we showed

our Ayrshires. Thanks to Abby Kern and Amanda Hartman for allowing me to swipe their heifers for a district herd.

The farm of Rita Frericks was host to a group of physicians who were learning how to treat injuries sustained on farms. The Liberty FFA chapter hosted the event.

Finally about 40 persons attended the picnic hosted by us on July 1. We couldn’t have asked for better temperatures.

Until next time I wish for a bountiful and safe harvest and God Bless. Good luck to those that exhibit at the fall shows.

StephensonHello from the soggy North here in

northern Stephenson County. We couldn’t buy any rain in July. However since the 4th of August, we have had 10 to 12 inches. It would have been nice to spread that out through the summer, but that’s alright. The corn, beans and hay look great now.

On July 6th we had our District Show in Freeport with 90 head judged by Mark Reuth of Wisconsin.

The Stephenson County Fair was held the last week of August, and like most every year, it rained EVERY day. Other than flooding and the rent-a-cops trying to dictate which gate to use (despite having a livestock pass), it was a good time. The Junior Champion was a sr. yearling owned by Laura Lyford, and Paul Graybill had Reserve. Grand Champion was a five-yr-old Gibson daughter owned by Laura Lyford. Clearfield’s Jr. 2 was Reserve Champion.

We would like to also congratulate Coach Becky Meier and her team that won the National Dairy Bowl Contest in the senior division at the National Convention in Tennessee. Stephenson County was well

represented by Luke Brinkmeier, Kyle Koester and Brent Koester. A great job done by all; your knowledge represents Stephenson County well.

I do not have any other news, so members please contact me if you have anything. The rain has stopped for now, so I need to get busy with 4th crop of hay and then corn silage. Thank you much.

Tri-CountyFirst off, our club thanks the Boone-

Winnebago club for their invitation to show at their local show. Many of us agreed that it was nice to be part of a show with good numbers and good cattle. Six Tri-County exhibitors were part of the show. Those results are listed in the show reports.

A note: Thanks to Lowell & Marita Knief who sponsored the Bred & Owned trophy, a Tri-County tradition in memory of Em & Whitie Thompson. Other Tri-County members were seen in the barns and among the spectators: Bob & Kaye Miller (It is hard not to think of you as being part of our club!); Kelly & Sarah Sheehan; Nick & Cheri Conro; Dean Dunn; Bill Berghorn; Karen Brown; Keith Engel; Randy Wesemann, Leslee Kriegel with 6-weeks old Autumn; Andy, Mary Etta & Albert Lenkaitis along with their new herdsman, Joe Mills; George Marcella Drendel along with daughter, Cindy Edwards; and our club president Ray Hess who did the shopping, grilled the pork chops, etc., for the pre-show meal that was sponsored by the Tri-County club.

We look forward to seeing everyone in Tri-County for the State Convention this winter!

NationalEvery June, the Illinois juniors look forward to making a splash at the National Conven-

tion, and this year was no exception in Knoxville, Tenn. Prior to leaving Illinois, the juniors began their first full day of travel with a few farm visits

along the way to Carter’s Corner and Rolling Lawns Farm to see both of these excellent herds of Holsteins. These two quick farm visits were greatly appreciated on rather short notice.

The first official day in Knoxville began on Saturday, June 23rd, when the group headed to the convention center to put out the scrapbook and folding display entries. The dairy jeop-ardy contest began with 13 contestants in the senior division, with John Mitchell emerging 2nd in the finals in a very close, nail-biting round. Next, Emily Irwin competed in the junior division of 30 contestants, and while unable to end up in the top three, she did an excellent

job for her first time in national competition. Finish-ing up the dairy jeopardy was the intermediate divi-sion, and Philip Shanks put some points on the board in a competitive division with 28 contestants.

In the afternoon, Laura Lyford was the first to pres-ent her speech on the Leasing Program. Next was Kelly Sheehan telling how producers should respond to me-dia questions and interviews. Lastly, Sarah Sheehan spoke about Three-A-Day dairy in food choices. All three girls did an excellent job in their speech presenta-tions and follow-up questions from the judges.

Illinois’ own, John Mitchell, had his DJM inter-view and was later honored at as one of twelve na-tional semi-finalists in the DJM contest. We extend our congratulations to John on an honor very well deserved.

Saturday evening the dairy bowl teams took their written exams, and the senior team scored high enough to be placed 1st in the brackets for competition beginning Monday morning. In fact, Kyle Koester placed 1st and Luke Brinkmeier placed 2nd in the senior divi-sion written exams out of at least 64 contestants. The junior team also scored quite high with Aaron Mitchell placing 2nd on the written exam out of at least 60 contestants.

Sunday was host day and the group split, with some going on local farm tours and some going to Dollywood. Sunday evening they were reunited and attended a first-joining of adults and juniors for a great meal and family night. Gary Jenkins and his Thundering Hearts band played in a high energy show combining music, comedy and lots of audience participation.

Monday was jam-packed with dairy bowl competitions. The junior team placed 4th after the written test and beat Washington in Round 1. Iowa outscored Illinois in Round 2. Illinois

GatewayHello everyone! First Congratulations to

the new graduates in the area: Erin Schaufel-berger graduated from Lincoln Christian College majoring in music ministry, Jennifer Gueldener from Edwardsville High School, Chelsie Stewart from Greenville Jr. High School, and Jarrod Guckian from Greenville High School. Apologies to anyone I missed.

Amy Schaufelberger, Tyler Carter, Joshua & Rebecca Laesch participated in the South-ern Regional 4-H Dairy Judging Contest held at Don and Doug Leuking’s in April.

The summer fair season has been an award-winning one for several of our juniors. The Gateway Holstein Junior Show kicked off the summer shows on July 7 in Greenville with a great turnout. The Illinois State Fair Junior Show was also very rewarding for sev-eral youth. The highlights of these shows are summarized elsewhere in this issue.

The DuQuoin State Fair was held Labor Day weekend. Chelsie Stewart showed the junior show Grand Champion Holstein. Cathy Guckian showed the Grand Cham-pion Milking Shorthorn of the Junior and Open Shows. Additionally, Joshua Laesch had an outstanding day at the Bond Coun-ty Fair. His 2-year-old was named Grand Champion. Congratulations to all exhibitors! Good luck in the school year.

StephensonHello! I hope everyone is doing well. First

off I would like to congratulate Karen Lyford on her engagement to Adam Kryder. I’m told September 2008 is the date!

Congratulations also goes out to Kyle and Brent Koester and Luke Brinkmeier for placing 1st at National Convention for quiz bowl. Great job guys!

The district show was held in July in Free-port at the Stephenson County Fairgrounds; results are summarized in the show reports.

Congratulations to all fall-goers! We heard everyone did well and had fun. Good luck to Alissa Koester as she heads off to Louisville in November for 4-H judging and quiz bowl! by Carley Rote

Convention

beat Ohio in Round 3 but was narrowly defeated in the final moments by Minnesota in Round 4, forcing Illinois out of the competition. Although the juniors were disappointed, they represented Illinois very well and could feel proud of the outstanding job they did.

The senior team placed 1st after the written test and were victorious over Ohio with a score of 262 to -5 in Round 1. In Round 2, Pennsylvania defeated the Illinois team 195 to 148. That sent Illinois to the lower bracket to work their way up and again play Ohio in Round 3, winning 230 to 0. They continued to win Rounds 4 through 7 against New England, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New York.

Tuesday morning everyone gathered for the dairy bowl finals. Washington came into the finals undefeated, so Illinois needed to beat Washington twice in the double-elimation for-mat. You can imagine the emotions stirring in the team AND the Illinois delegation in the audience during Round 8, in which Illinois pulled off a 120 to 80 victory over Washington. Round 9 resulted in a lot of chewed nails and silent cheers from Illinois onlookers and one final outburst when they were announced as the 2007 National Dairy Bowl Champions win-ning by a score of 110 to 25. WAY TO GO!

All the good work shown by the juniors didn’t just happen overnight. Dairy bowl coaches Becky Meier and Amy Shanks began their dedication to the teams through weekly practices back in April. While at the convention, ev-erything was done as a team...observing all the contests together, eating together, and supporting one another all the way. Chap-erones attending with the group were Mary Olbrich, Melissa Irwin and Ron and Karen Schaufelberger.

The above is just the highlights of the convention for the Juniors and doesn’t include the mixer/dances, pre-sale bar-beque and sale, awards banquet or the Huddle at the Hall (Women’s Basket-ball Hall of Fame) What was the value of the whole experience? PRICELESS! by Karen Schaufelberger
