Pro Continental rider, Scott Thwaites, was born in Burley in Wharfedale and won the Lister Horsfall Grand Prix here in 2016, the same year that he completed the Tour of Spain. The following year he finished the Tour de France and has built a strong reputation as a Classics specialist.
After a year of disruption and cancelled events, it is great to see that the Ilkley Cycle Races are back. The domestic racing scene, and all those involved in it, have had a very difficult time, but the return of events like the Otley and Ilkley criteriums show that we’re now turning the corner.The recent Tour de France is a reminder that Yorkshire hosted a superb “Grand Départ” that gave the opportunity for the first Ilkley races in 2014. I’m pleased to have seen the event grow each year, and now it is hosting rounds of the National Circuit Race Series.
As professional riders, our livelihood depends on supporters and media coverage. The team at Velo29 & Dream Bike Giveaway want to provide live coverage of UK race and are harnessing “fan funding” to do so. If you want to support UK bike racing, and to help develop the next generation of riders who can progress to the World Tour, then please make a contribution (p.15)
Events like these, on a short punchy circuit, in the centre of a town, with a good atmosphere and vocal support, are what bike racing over on the Continent is all about. It’s especially important to have races like these here too, for our young riders to get a real taste of grass roots racing at its best, and to hopefully inspire and encourage them to get the most out of their cycling.

The circuit starts outside Bettys Café Tea Rooms on The Grove, right in Ilkley’s town centre. The bandstand area opposite will host Ilkley Brewery’s pop-up bar together with Lishman’s barbeque. After a 90° righthand turn there is a 200m long climb up the Riddings Road ramp. After another righthander, there is a long stretch of false flat along Albany Walk onto Parish Gyll Drive.
By this point, the gradient has eased althoughit is likely to be this stretch where strong riderswill really be able to press home an advantage.The top of the circuit is reached just beforethe end of Parish Gyll Drive, where the coursedrops sharply down Wilton Road. A very fastcorner will sweep the riders onto Grove Roadfor an extremely rapid return to the bars,restaurants and shops along the finish straighton The Grove.
The tough circuit climbs 32 m oneach 1.5 km lap.

We present another evening of free sporting entertainment for the town, a night of racing that has now firmly established itself on the sporting and social calendar. It is a privilege to stage these races right in the heart of our community - the setting couldn’t be more atmospheric on a midsummer evening which helps create a fantastic atmosphere and memorable sporting moments. The Grove not only provides a superb tree-lined home straight, but is an ideal place for people to mingle and socialise along the wide pavements, and in the cafes and bars.
A huge number of Ilkley Cycling Club members freely give up their time to make this event a reality. In addition, we rely on our traffic management company, a private ambulance and medical crew, as well as infrastructure partners for barriers, event stage, electronic timing and commentary. The budget
is in excess of £18K and the races simply would not be viable if an events company were employed, rather than the time and labour being freely given by volunteers.

To celebrate our local love of cycling up inclines,Out The Saddle are pleased to offer special prizes for the fastest Strava times up Riddings Road on the day of the event.
The KoM and QoM will each receive a cash prize of £80 each (or split for ties). While the fastest U16 PoM (Prince and Princess) will recieve £20 each.
This will be awarded using the Strava segmentIlkley crit climb plus drag to the top. The current fastest time for the men is Jack Pullar’s 0:59 and for the women it’s Hermione Pickering from 2019’s race with a time of 1:09.
