The Indian textile and clothing industry continues to have an important place in thenational economy with regard to employment, value addition or income generation, and

export earnings. Apart from providing one of the basic necessities of life, the textiles

industry also plays a pivotal role through its contribution to industrial output, employment

generation, and the export earnings of the country.

According to the Annual Report 2010-11 of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India,

currently, the sector contributes about 14% to industrial production, 4% to GDP, and 17% to

the country's export earnings.

To unravel the market trends, business sentiments and environment in small and medium

enterprises (SMEs) in the apparel and fashion accessories sector, IndiaMART Knowledge

Services has conducted a special survey in order to unravel the market trends for small and

medium enterprises (SMEs) in the apparel and fashion accessories sector as compared to

the previous year. The results of the survey have been highlighted in this special report. It

provides direct employment to more than 35 million people, and is the second largest

provider of employment after agriculture. Thus, the growth and all round development of

this industry has a direct bearing on the improvement of the economy of the nation.

This report attempts to gauge present market scenario vs. when chips were down for many

SMEs. The economic turmoil had impacted a majority of units across sectors. Many sectors

have started to look up owing to better conditions. The government too has taken several

positive measures to resolve constrains for respective sector. It also brings key

KEY LEARNINGS

SMEs need to adopt technology to cut costs, gain efficiency and enhance business

processes to combat the current challenges and remain globally competitive. Eleventh Five

year plan too suggests facilitation of modernisation and technological upgradation of the

different segments of the industry to make it internationally competitive.

Inability to access timely and adequate finance is a major

challenge facing SMEs in the apparel and fashion accessories

sector. To address this, government bodies should come

forward and make finance easily available to them.

Growth prospects of the Indian apparel & fashion accessories

market are bright as sales increased for most of the SMEs, as

per the IndiaMART Survey. These enterprises can capitalise

on this opportunity by utilising innovative channels such as

online B2B marketplaces to market themselves to buyers.

Top export destinations for textile products include the USA

followed by the UAE, UK and Germany. Bangladesh andTurkey too have proved to be emerging export destinations

with about 101.4% and 39.6% growth seen in April-

September 2010-11 vis-a-vis same period in 2009-10

respectively. SMEs can target buyers in these countries to

export their products.

Indian technical textiles industry is projected to grow to $31.4

billion by 2016-17, with healthcare and infrastructure sectors

accounting for a major chunk of the consumption.
