What is it all about?THE V-Strom 1000 ABS has evolved from theV-Strom 650 ABS which has been especiallypopular in Europe and North America.

It is equipped with a newly-designedV-twin engine, aluminium chassis, radi-al-mounted front-brake calliper, ABS and

traction control, and includes specially-de-signed side and top cases. The styling of the

V-Strom 1000 was inspired by the 1988DR750S, Suzuki’s first big on-road/off-roadm a ch i n e.

This machine is due to launch in 2014 andwill offer customers the best of adventuremotorcycling including versatility, fun, andcomfort for long-distance travel.

What does it cost?YOU will need £9,999 plus on-the-roadcharges to get hold of one of these. Suzuki hasalso announced the colour schemes that willbe available at launch – candy daring red,pearl glacier white and glass sparkle black.

How does it handle?SUZUKI has created a new traction-controlsystem for the V-Strom 1000. This is based onthe system developed by its MotoGP en-gineers and is claimed to be the most ad-vanced system seen on an adventure bike.

The new system uses five sensors to ana-lyse information on the machine and de-livers optimum traction with precisionthrough multi-function settings.

The V-Strom’s all-new chassis is designedto provide impressive manoeuvrability and

agility. It features a twin-spar aluminiumframe that helps to reduce the overall kerbmass to 228kg, which is 8kg lighter than theoriginal V-Strom 1000 and makes it the light-est bike in the class. The new machine alsoboasts a 19in front wheel, which is now thepreferred size in the adventure-bike sector,to provide agility as well as stability on andoff the road.

The radially-mounted front-brake callipercombined with Suzuki’s lightweight ABSsystem look to provide braking performancethat matches the control of the newV- S t ro m ’s power-delivery system.

Ve rd i c tTHE 2014 Suzuki V-Strom 1000 ABS has a bigtask on its hands as it competes head on withthe market leader in this class, the BMWR1200GS. The BMW is the natural choice inthis sector, meaning it is difficult for com-petitors to make a serious impact.

CCM is set to reveal the produc-tion-ready GP450 Adventure at thisye a r ’s Motorcycle Live event at theNEC, Birmingham. Designed andbuilt in the UK, the new GP450 is the

only mid-range adventure bike geared up forlong-distance travel straight out of the crate.

The bike boasts a long-range tank, a durable30KW engine seen previously in the BMWG450 and a host of accessories, including asoft-luggage and hard-luggage option and alow-seat, low-suspension option.

The machine is expected to appeal to riderswanting something more manageable off roadthan the large-capacity adventure bikes madepopular by the exploits of Ewan McGregorand Charley Boorman in their Long Way

Ro u n d television series. The low-seat optionand light weight of only 135kg are expected tomake the GP450 a hit with female riders, aswell as those craving more off-road abilityfrom their adventure bike while visiting theunmarked terrain of places like Morocco, thePyrenees or the Swiss Alps.

The GP450 Adventure is set to cost £7,995.CCM are taking pre-orders before the Mo-torcycle Live show, which runs from Novem-ber 23 to December 1. And CCM are offering aspecial NEC offer. SEVEN out of ten motorists inthe UK are against the clocksgoing back this weekend, ac-cording to a new survey. And60 per cent of drivers think

there would be fewer deaths on Brit-ish roads if the system was abol-ished.

A poll by Smart Witness showedthat 70.8 per cent of people would voteto abolish British Standard Time ifthere was a referendum.

British Standard Time, also re-ferred to as British Summer Time,puts the clocks forward of GreenwichMean Time by an hour on the lastSunday of March, and then puts themback again on the last Sunday ofO c t o b e r.

One of the main reasons for op-position to the clocks going back anhour on Sunday, October 27 was theincreased number of child deaths onthe roads because of darker after-n o o n s.

Some 60 per cent of drivers said thereason they want to stop the clocksgoing back is that road-accident mor-tality rates rise significantly in thewinter months.

Smart Witness managing directorSimon Marsh said: “The findings

from the survey are clear – the vastmajority of people in England do notwant the clocks to go back in Octoberand think road safety is one of themain reasons why the law needs tochang e.

“Our company provides accidentcameras to private motorists, taxifirms and haulage companies acrossthe UK and every year we see a steep

increase in the number of accidentsafter the clocks go back due to re-duced visibility at afternoonr ush-hour.”

In 2009 the Department of Trans-port published a paper that con-firmed that moving to lighterevenings would prevent about 80deaths on the road a year, and wouldbe cheap to implement.

� IN the Smart Witness survey –entitled Do You Want The ClockTo Go Back? – motoristswere asked whether theylike or dislike theclocks going back.

And the resultsshow that 73.4 percent of drivers dislikeit.

Some 46.4 per centsaid they do not like thefact it is dark when theytravel home from work.

Another 12 per cent said theydislike the fact it is moredangerous for women to

commute home from work in thedark. And another 14.8 per cent

said they are concerned forthe safety of children.

Only 26.5 per centcame up with reasonsfor liking the clocksgoing back. Of thatgroup, 20.3 per cent

said they prefer havinglighter mornings.The majority of

respondents (67.2 per cent)think it would make things easierfor Britain to trade with Europe ifwe were running on closer time toCentral European Time.

Is it a 4x4? Is it an estate? It is a bit of both –but Subaru’s Outback should be none theworse for that. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.

THE Subaru Outback. With ahistory going all the way backto 1996, it was the originaloff-road-orientated family es-tate, with an image that, at the

turn of the century, placed it comfort-ably alongside big Volvos and LandRovers as a preferred choice for thecountry set.

In more recent times, it has been ararer sight on our roads – somethingSubar u’s importers would like tochange, with the introduction of thismuch-improved, fourth-generation ver-sion.

A 50mm increase on ground clear-ance over the standard Legacy Tourerestate, on which this model is based,means 200mm of fresh air beneath theb o dy wo rk .

It is not enough to tackle anything toorocky but certainly better than pretendoff-roaders like Toyota’s RAV4.

In any case, cars like this one are notbought to tackle the Rubicon Trail butto deal with muddy cart tracks andslippery back roads, with or withoutheavy trailers in tow.

All of this is well within the Out-b a ck ’s remit thanks to its symmetricalall-wheel-drive system. This usuallysplits power 50/50 between front andrear axles in manual models – or 60/40if you have gone for the LineartronicCVT automatic version.

The car shunts power around to thewheel that can best use it in any givenslushy situation. In short, it is better offthe road than a car of this kind has anyright to be.

This revised model feels more up-market, featuring smart carbon-effectaccents on the doors, metallic accentsfor the centre console and the dash-board, and a more ergonomic steer-ing-wheel design.

There are classier instrument dialstoo, separated by a neat 3.5in colourliquid-crystal display. Expect to find526-litres of space with all the seats inplace and 1,677-litres when you flip theuseful levers by the tailgate to flattenthe 60/40 split-folding rear bench.

Expect to pay around £30,000 for yourOutback in manual-gearbox form.There is a £1,500 premium to find if youwant the Lineartronic automatic.There is only one trim level, and thesingle estate bodystyle. These days, youonly get a 2.0-litre diesel-engine op-tion.

In terms of Subaru’s own line-up, thatkind of outlay pitches this car in about£1,000 above top-specification, compar-ably-equipped 4WD diesel-powered ver-sions of the slightly-less-capableLegacy Tourer and the slightly-more-capable Forester.

All Outback models come with 17ingunmetal-coloured alloy wheels, silverroof rails, power-folding heated mir-rors, a roof spoiler, UV-protected glass,a power-sliding glass sunroof, self-lev-elling automatic HID headlamps withwashers, rain-sensing wipers and frontfo glamps.

Inside, you can expect to finddual-zone air conditioning, a six-speak-er stereo system with USB and aux-incompatibility, Bluetooth phone compat-

ibility, a trip computer, a VGA centredisplay with rear parking camera,heated sports seats with power adjust-ment for the driver, and a leath-er-trimmed multi-function steeringwheel from which you can operatecruise control. There are really onlytwo main options – leather trim andsatellite navigation.

Usually, a more-capable car is moreexpensive to run. You would expect thatthe permanent symmetrical all-wheel-drive system of this Outback wouldexact more of a fuel and emissionspenalty than would be found on mostother rivals, cars that trundle aroundin two-wheel drive most of the time,with all-wheel traction only being in-troduced when needed.

Thanks to enhancements like an ex-haust gas recirculator – which aloneimproves efficiency by 12 per cent – thefigures suggest otherwise.

Take the 47.9mpg combined-cycle fuelfigure and 155g/km CO2 reading youwill get from a manual, diesel-poweredOutback model.

The Lineartronic automatic dieselversion I have manages 44.8mpg and166g/km.

In both cases, the returns are not faroff those achieved by less-capable rivalslike Vauxhall’s Insignia Country Tour-er, Volkswagen’s Passat Alltrack andthe Audi A4 Allroad.

The car offers the peace of mind of afive-year/100,000-mile warranty. Andwith service intervals at 12,000 miles,the Outback should not prove too ar-duous to own.

It’s better offroad than it hasany right to be

MOTORCYCLE Live fea-tures a double dose of TTaction this year, with twodays dedicated to the Isleof Man’s flagship road-ra-

cing festivals.Sunday, November 24 will celebrate

the Classic TT, while Sunday, Decem-ber 1 will be devoted to the world’smost famous road race, the Isle ofMan TT.

There will also be special guestappearances from top racers on adaily basis.

Twenty-time TT champion JohnMcGuinness and 2013’s big victorMichael Dunlop will be leading astar-studded line-up which also in-cludes Manxman Conor Cummins,f ans’ favourite Bruce Anstey, SES TTZero winner Michael Rutter, veterancompetitor Ian Lougher and risingstar James Hillier, who won his firstTT race this year.

John Holden and Andy Winkle, Benand Tom Birchall, Tim Reeves andDan Sayle, and 16-time TT championDave Molyneux along with his pas-senger Patrick Farrance will be rep-resenting the sidecars.

Riders will be signing autographsand meeting fans on the TT PaddockExperience stand, and taking part indaily question-and-answer sessions

with TT commentator James Whit-ham on the Black Horse Stage in theBritish Eurosport EntertainmentZ o n e.

On December 1, the TT will takeover the stage, with four ques-tion-and-answer sessions and a spe-cial TT-themed edition of Fast Bikes’Question of Bikes hosted by StevePar rish.

Race fans will also have the chanceto bag early-bird grandstand and VIPhospitality packages for the 2014 Isleof Man TT.
