the scoop OCTOBER 24 2012 Pet Day is just about upon us. Fingers are still crossed that the weather will improve for Monday. Please remember the working bee that runs this Saturday from 9am and take some time to pop along and help make our school look amazing for Monday. Last night our Board of Trustees and Staff had a joint meeting after school in which we delved into the different facets of the schools operation. We broke into groups and spent time on each of the six dimensions of good practice (Teaching, Leading and Managing, Governing, School Culture and Engaging Families) which are all centered around Student Learning - engagement, progress and achievement! Using the ERO evaluation indicators we reflected on what is happening, what we are doing - or planning to do about it and how we are resourcing and supporting those decisions. It was great to see our staff and our board discussing, reflecting and learning off each other about what we are doing every day to make our school experience the best it can be for each and every child that is here. We have a strong, supportive and professional culture in our school which is based on mutual respect. Last nights meeting reflected that. The ERO review team arrives at 11am on Monday - right in the thick of all the action! We will base them in the school staffroom where they will spend the first couple of hours looking at school documentation and then we will formally welcome them outside just before the kapa haka group perform. They will spend some time with the management team (Tim, Jan and Mark) and then the Board of Trustees. On Tuesday and Wednesday they are around the school - visiting classrooms, observing students, talking with staff and beginning to write up their emerging findings. They finish their visit on Wednesday night with a debrief to the Board. Please help them feel welcome around our school during their visit. The experience they bring with that 'outside eye' will help us develop into an even better school! Remember class photos tomorrow. Pet Day is just about upon us.

Using the ERO evaluation indicators we

reflected on what is happening, what we are doing - or planning to do about it and how we are resourcing and supporting those decisions.

We will base them in the school staffroom where they will spend the first couple of hours looking at school documentation and then we will formally welcome them

outside just before the kapa haka group perform.

Pet Day Bus: The bus will run as usual in the morning but there will be no bus run in the afternoon.

Working Bee this Saturday: See you 9am onwards to tidy before Pet day. Bring your tools for weeding, clearing etc.

Week 2 Term 4MANUKA - Manuka have been bringing home some maths flash cards each day. Please keep these in their home folders as they work with a buddy each day at school on these to help achieve their goals. Once they have become very fast at instantly recalling their cards they will be replaced with a new set of knowledge goals. This is to replace the basic facts that were pasted in the homework books last term. Thanks for your support with helping them to work on these. Certificates: Charlotte and Corban for showing great integrity skills - always doing the right thing at the right time, and Tayla and Rani for having such a great start to their school days. Kapai! Kia Ora to Hamish McKenzie who joined us this week in Manuka - welcome to our happy team. Aimee wrote this fantastic story last week - we love her interesting words that make her story so exciting to read.

“One time we played Ratatouille. I had lots of fun! We were having a long time on the play station then my sister or mum said the chips are here. We went down the stairs. Thump, thump, thump, thump! We got some chips - crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch. We went back up the steps - thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump! We went back and played Ratatouille for a long time again. Then my mum said "Tea time!" We went down the stairs again. We had tea. We put our pyjamas on. Mum quietly tiptoed in Jacinta's room and got my mattress. I tried to find my favourite Lion in Jacinta's room. We went to bed.”

KOWHAI were very excited to build boats last week, but when we floated them they didn't all work! Hmmmm... This week we are exploring the design process and we will use it to help us build boats that work better. We would love any boxes, bottles or construction materials to help us please! We are talking about all the ways learners show integrity in the classroom. Thanks to those parents who wrote a comment in their child's publishing book in the weekend. They love to receive feedback from you. We have been thinking about taking pride in our work and it's presentation. The pet posters are looking great! What a lot of effort has gone into these!

RIMU I hope that everyone enjoyed the long and chilly weekend. The children are all getting ready for pet day with most of the posters now finished. We have just begun trialling a new reading rotation system called Action Stations. The children work on a project and talk about what they have learned and how they problem solved and worked together to achieve their goal. We are reviewing time for our maths homework this week andwill revert to basic facts practice next week. Keep up the basic facts practice on the class blog as this is a great way to increase the speed of recall of these facts.

Certificates: Kaleb McCombe-Rae & Mitchell Gowers

RATA This week we tested to see if our boats would float. They all floated except for one. We are learning about the design process and are at the imagine stage. At the moment we are researching to find out what makes a boat float, how to make it stable and how we can power it. We are constructing lots of things and would appreciate empty cereal boxes etc. Thanks.

MIRO have started sharing their work on our class and individual blogs. This is a fantastic way your children can share with you what they are doing in the class. We really value your comments. Wow, what amazing pet day posters. Please remember to return these this week. • I am looking forward to pet day. I get to bring my pig. Jake• I can't wait until pet day because I get to perform in our Kapahaka group. Grace• I am looking forward to bringing my new puppy to pet day. Blake S

Sun hats are a must have this term and need to be at school by next Tuesday.Have a great week.

TOTARAWe have some fantastic looking posters for Pet Day, we are looking forward to displaying them! We have been discussing integrity, what is it? What does it mean? What does it look like? How can we explain it to someone else?Sunhats are required from Tuesday next week, so please ensure that these are at school.

Certificates: Emma Henderson for sharing her great ideas clearly. Olivia McCartin, we welcome your smiles, ideas and hard work!

Looking forward to catching up with you on Pet Day. Della Carr

KAURI It's Pet Day soon and I am looking forward to eating the fabulous food that we have every year! Bruce

It's great to be back at school because we're doing fun inquiry. We are doing technology and this week we are writing instructions and making balloon powered cars. The first one we tried didn't work so we need to modify it. GreerThe Pet Day posters are looking brilliant, I am looking forward to seeing a chicken on a lead! Miss Duncan

MATAI• I can't wait till Pet Day because I don't know what I'm bringing. I really enjoy buying things - Paige • On Friday we did our Cardboard challenge. My group built a shoot em up game called, 'Boot Camp.' We learnt about the design process and how you have to re-design things when making them! - Benjamin
