And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them.

We forgot to list one more source of light! And it’s the most obvious one: light itself, radiating in sun, moon, and stars. Lamps and candle, streetlights and flashlights, lanterns and firelight encircle our environment with their cheery reassurance that the darkness will not rob us of our sight.

Still, light is of no use to those who refuse to open their eyes or prefer denial than what’s right before them. King Herod met wise men from the East. He listened to his own priests and scribes read the holy text. He saw the guiding star above as well as anyone. But all Herod could see in all of these signs is a threat to his own authority. In this case, the light did no good at all. It is wasted on those who prefer the ways of darkness.

Today we remember those wise dreamers who followed a star of heaven more fiercely than any personal ambition, more faithfully than any creed. We too have been offered a light that will guide us just as surely to our heart’s desire.

Sin embargo, la luz no sirve de nada para aquellos que se niegan a abrir los ojos o prefieren la negación de lo que está ante de ellos. El rey Herodes conoció a hombres sabios de Oriente. Escuchó a sus propios sacerdotes y escribas leer el texto sagrado. Vio a la estrella que lo guiaba, asi como a cualquiera. Pero todo lo que Herodes pudo ver en todos estas señales fue una amenaza a su propia autoridad. En su caso, la luz no sirvió para nada.

Hoy recordamos a aquellos sabios soñadores que siguieron a una estrella del cielo con más entusiasmo que cualquier ambición personal, más fielmente que cualquier credo. A nosotros también se nos ha ofrecido una luz que nos guiará con la misma seguridad que el deseo de nuestro corazón.

Epiphany Just when Christmas has been all wrapped up in a neat package strange things begin to happen. “Dromedaries from the East have arrived, all from Sheba came bearing gold and frankincense.” On Christmas Day we celebrated Christ’s birth according to Luke’s Gospel. On the Feast of Epiphany today we celebrate Christmas according to Matthew’s Gospel. If we have taken all this for granted it is disturbing. The Magi who have been at the fringes of the manger scene, or perhaps at the far end of the church, have arrived, following the Star, seeking the whereabouts of the Child.

Golden Years January 9th We are back on the sched-ule for the Golden Years Mass. Adoration at 10:30 am, Mass at 11:30 am, Luncheon in Reedy Hall at 12 noon. Come celebrate the New Year! Henrietta Wieber will host and prepare Samoan Food – Chop Suey & Kahlua Pork. Entertainment too!

Joint Administrative and Pastoral Council Meeting January 11th at 7 pm in Reedy Hall. Any Parishioner is welcome to attend. In attendance will be Carmen Gaston, Office of the Director of Development of the Archdiocese of Portland.

Happy New Year 2018! Welcome back to all students. We are looking forward to many weeks of learning, fun and friendship. As a group our next task will be learning the Lord’s Prayer also known as the "Our Father." We’ll continue to recite the Hail Mary so we won’t forget.

Please Note: there WILL be classes on Monday and Tuesday, January 15 and 16.

Sign up for Mass times for the reception of the Sacrament of First Communion will be January 29. Parents of children preparing to receive the Sacrament of First Communion please note this date.

First Communion Book and Packet available for pick up on February 5. Cost is $15.00 per family.

Taizé Prayer The prayer service’s emphasis is “peace.” You are invited to pray for your needs and the needs of our troubled world at a Taizé Prayer Service held today, January 21, at 7 pm in the Benedictine Sisters’ Monastery Chapel located at 840 S. Main Street, Mt. Angel, OR.

Taizé is a contemplative experience and welcomes people from all faiths to come together in prayer, silence, music and scripture. Please join us as we begin a new cycle of services through-out the Spring.

Prayer Service for Joyce Sample Joyce Sample, mother of Archbishop Sample passed away peacefully in the early morning of Sunday December 31 2017. A prayer service will be held for her on the evening of Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the Cathedral. She will then be taken to Marquette, Michigan for a funeral Mass.
