INTRODUCTION AND CURRICULUM OVERVIEW Dear parents and students, This guide is about learning at Dulwich College Suzhou in Years 10 and 11 (Key Stage 4). It gives information about the courses we offer and the choices students have to make at this stage of their educational career. The curriculum in Years 10 and 11 is designed to be broad and balanced and is based on IGCSE and GCSE programmes from two examining bodies: Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Edexcel. The programmes are two years long, designed for 14-16 year olds and cover a range of subjects. They are internationally recognised qualifications. As our students have different needs and goals we offer diverse pathways, that are taught concurrently, through Years 10 and 11, as shown in the chart below.

Full IGCSE Programme

On this programme students take final examinations in Year 11 set and marked by CIE and Edexcel. Some subjects also include coursework and controlled assessments. (For more details please refer to the individual subject pages later in this booklet). Students receive a grade for each subject they study on an A*- G scale, with A* to C being considered a Pass grade. A* is the top grade, awarded for exceptional performances. Grades are recorded on the Dulwich College transcript and students also receive certificates from CIE and Edexcel. The Full IGCSE programme leads into the Full IB Diploma programme in Years 12 and 13.

Full High School Programme

Students on this programme follow a modified IGCSE curriculum. They do not take external examinations but instead take School-Based (SB) assessments, tests and internal examinations set by their subject teachers. Students receive a grade for each subject they study on an A*- G scale, with A* to C being considered a Pass grade. A* is the top grade, awarded for exceptional performances. Grades are recorded on the Dulwich College transcript. This programme may be suitable for students who are definitely planning to attend university in the US, Canada or Korea, or for students who do not have a high proficiency in English.

Part IGCSE Programme

On this programme students follow a combination of external examinations and School-Based courses. The pathways that students follow depend on their academic record, level of English proficiency and future University plans. We will advise parents and students on the best pathways for their son or daughter. All of the programmes are academically challenging and continuation on a programme is confirmed at each checkpoint. Students failing to reach expected standards may be transferred to a different programme.

Looking ahead to Years 12 and 13, almost any combination of subjects will leave students’ choices open for the High School Diploma. However, for those students planning to take the full IB Diploma they need to make sure that their choices align with the IB requirements. For this reason we have included some information about the IB for you to refer to on page 35.

Students can obtain more information about the courses in Years 10 and 11 and beyond from their subject teachers, form tutors, Head of Year, as well as our University Counsellor and Head of IB. We also look forward to discussing student options with you at the Year 9 Options Evening, held this year on Monday 2nd February 2015, 5:30 to 7pm.

SUBJECTS STUDIED IN YEARS 10 AND 11

On all of the Year 10 and 11 programmes there are two kinds of subjects – core and option. All students study the core subjects. They cannot make choices for these. In the case of English, students will be advised whether they should take First or Second language. In Science, some students will be invited to take Triple Award. In Mathematics, some students will be invited to take an extra IGCSE qualification in Additional Mathematics. These decisions are based on students’ records of academic performance and English language skills and are confirmed in a letter after the final end of Year 9 examinations.

CORE SUBECTS

English First Language and Literature English Second Language Mathematics Science

Non-examined subjects: PSHE Global Perspectives (may be examined for some students) Physical Education Students must choose 4 OPTION SUBJECTS from the list below to achieve a full timetable. To ensure a broad and balanced curriculum, one option must be a language and one must be a Humanities subject (History, Geography, Economics or Business Studies). We may advise some students to follow a reduced timetable if they need extra time to improve their English or require Learning Support.

IGCSE Course Description Core Subject: English Language & English Literature

Entry Requirements

Cambridge recommend that learners who are beginning this course should have a level in English equivalent to First Language competence.

Course Content Cambridge IGCSE First Language English is designed for learners whose mother tongue is English. The course allows learners to:

develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing

learn how to use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation

develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed.

The aim of the English Language course is to enable students to communicate accurately, appropriately and effectively in speech and writing. During the two year course, students are encouraged to enjoy and appreciate the variety of language and will learn to understand and respond appropriately to what they hear, read and experience. The English Literature course aims to nurture students’ enjoyment of reading literary texts in various forms and from different periods and genres. They will be taught to develop the ability to communicate informed personal responses and appreciate the many ways in which writers achieve their effects. Students sit two examinations and are awarded two separate grades.

Course Assessment Student progress will be monitored through regular assessments and internal examinations. The final grade for students will be determined by externally assessed written examinations and externally moderated coursework. The break-down of marks is as follows: English Language: Written examination (2 hours) – 50% Coursework consisting of three pieces – 50% English Literature: Written examinations on three set texts (2 hours 15 minutes) – 75% Unseen paper (1 hour 15 minutes) – 25%

IGCSE Course Description Core Subject: English as a Second Language

Course Content (I)GCSE Second Language English is designed for students who are studying English and want to consolidate their understanding in order to progress in their academic or professional career. The qualification reflects the widespread use of English in education, commerce and in entertainment. Through their studies, students will learn how to use English effectively in the type of situations and English-speaking environments they will encounter in their daily lives. The requirements of the course also help develop and consolidate skills in writing for a variety of academic purposes, thus enabling students to express themselves appropriately in other subject areas. The aim is to achieve a level of practical communication ideal for everyday use, which can also form the basis of further, more in-depth, language study. Students will be assessed on their proficiency in the following areas: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Course Assessment Student progress will be monitored through tests and internal examinations. The final grade for students will be determined by a reading and writing examination and a listening comprehension. Marks for the oral component do not contribute to the overall grade students receive for the written components. Instead, an “oral endorsement” records grades separately. Written examination (2 hours) – 70% Listening comprehension (45 minutes) – 30% Oral examination (10-15 minutes)
