About the AuthorsJennifer Smith has more than two decades of design and electronic publishing experience. Jennifer delivers professional development education for companies around the world relating to effective ways to use creative technology to achieve design and user experience objectives. She is a founding member of American Graphics Institute (AGI) and serves as Vice President of AGI. Prior to founding AGI she worked in advertising as an art director and served as a principal in a Pennsylvania-based design firm. Jennifer is widely regarded as one of the foremost authorities in electronic publishing and design and is often requested as a speaker at seminars and conferences around the world. Jennifer is the author of more than ten books on electronic publishing, including Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium for Dummies, published by Wiley. She has also written several of the Classroom in a Book series for Adobe Press. Jennifer bridges the gap between technical and creative, working easily with both developers and designers. Her ability to translate technical skills to address business issues allows organizations to reach their objectives with effective design and creativity. About Digital ClassroomAdobe® Illustrator® CS5 lets you create artwork for a variety of uses. Illustrator’s drawing tools let you take advantage of many ways to control color, text, and artwork in your designs. Illustrator provides you with ways to express your creative ideas and experiment with the presentation. Illustrator CS5 is also tightly integrated with other Adobe products such as Photoshop® CS5 and Flash® CS5 Professional.

Adobe Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom is like having your own personal instructor guiding you through each lesson while you work at your own speed. This book includes 13 self-paced lessons that let you discover essential skills and explore the new features and capabilities of Illustrator CS5. Each lesson includes step-by-step instructions, lesson files, and video tutorials, all of which are available on the DVD included with the printed version of this book, or online at www.digitalclassroombooks.com/epub/illustratorcs5. PrerequisitesBefore you start the lessons in Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom, you should have a working knowledge of your computer and its operating system. You should know how to use the directory system of your computer so that you can navigate through folders. You need to understand how to locate, save, and open files. You should also know how to use your mouse to access menus and commands.

Before starting the lessons files in Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom, make sure that you have installed Adobe Illustrator CS5. The software is sold separately, and not included with this book. You may use the 30-day trial version of Adobe Illustrator CS5 available at the adobe.com web site, subject to the terms of its license agreement.

System requirementsBefore starting the lessons in Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom, make sure that your computer is equipped for running Adobe Illustrator CS5, which you must purchase separately. Starting Adobe Illustrator CS5As with most software, Adobe Illustrator CS5 is launched by locating the application in your Programs folder (Windows) or Applications folder (Mac OS). If necessary, follow these steps to start the Adobe Illustrator CS5 application:

Windows1 Choose Start > All Programs > Adobe Illustrator CS5. If you have the Creative Suite

installed, you may have to select Adobe Illustrator from within the Creative Suite folder.

2 Close the Welcome Screen when it appears. You are now ready to use Adobe Illustrator CS5.

Mac OS1 Open the Applications folder, and then open the Adobe Illustrator CS5 folder. If you

have the Creative Suite installed, you may have to select Adobe Illustrator from within the Creative Suite folder.

2 Double-click the Adobe Illustrator CS5 application icon.

3 Close the Welcome Screen when it appears. You are now ready to use Adobe Illustrator CS5.

Menus and commands are identifi ed throughout the book by using the greater-than symbol (>). For example, the command to print a document would be identifi ed as File > Print.

Fonts used in this bookIllustrator CS5 Digital Classroom includes lessons that refer to fonts that were installed with your copy of Adobe Illustrator CS5. If you did not install the fonts, or have removed them from your computer, you may substitute diff erent fonts for the exercises or re-install the software to access the fonts.

If you receive a Missing Font Warning, press OK and proceed with the lesson.

Resetting Adobe Illustrator CS5 preferencesWhen you start Adobe Illustrator, it remembers certain settings along with the confi guration of the workspace from the last time you used the application. It is important that you start each lesson using the default settings so that you do not see unexpected results when working with the lessons in this book. Choose one of the following methods to reset your Adobe Illustrator CS5 preferences to their defaults.

Steps to reset default Adobe Illustrator CS5 preferences

1 Quit Adobe Illustrator CS5.

2 Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Illustrator. Your current settings are deleted.

Steps to save and then create new default Adobe Illustrator CS5 preferences

1 Quit Adobe Illustrator CS5 Illustrator.

2 Locate and rename the AIPrefs (Windows) or Adobe Illustrator Preferences (Mac OS).

• In Windows: Rename the AIPrefs fi le (for example, to AIPrefs_old) in the Documents and Settings/(user)/Application Data/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings folder.

• In Windows Vista or Windows 7: Rename the AIPrefs fi le (for example, to AIPrefs_old) in the Users/(user)/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings/(language_location) folder.

• In Mac OS: Rename the Adobe Illustrator Preferences fi le in the Users/(user)/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings folder.

3 Start Illustrator. Illustrator creates a new preferences fi le.

To restore custom settings, delete the new AIPrefs fi le and restore the original name of the previous AIPrefs fi le.

Loading lesson files

Adobe Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom

Loading lesson fi lesThe Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom DVD includes fi les that accompany the exercises for each of the lessons. You may copy the entire lessons folder from the supplied DVD to your hard drive, or copy only the lesson folders for the individual lessons you wish to complete.

For each lesson in the book, the fi les are referenced by the fi le name of each fi le. The exact location of each fi le on your computer is not used, as you may have placed the fi les in a unique location on your hard drive. We suggest placing the lesson fi les in the My Documents folder (Windows) or at the top level of your hard drive (Mac OS).

Copying the lesson fi les to your hard drive:1 Insert the Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom DVD supplied with this book.

2 On your computer desktop, navigate to the DVD and locate the folder named ailessons.

3 You can install all the fi les, or just specifi c lesson fi les. Do one of the following:

• Install all lesson fi les by dragging the ailessons folder to your hard drive.

• Install only some of the fi les by creating a new folder on your hard drive named ailessons. Open the ailessons folder on the supplied DVD, select the lesson you wish to complete, and drag the folder(s) to the ailessons folder you created on your hard drive.

Unlocking Mac OS fi les

Macintosh users may need to unlock the fi les after they are copied from the accompanying disc. This only applies to Mac OS computers and is because the Mac OS may view fi les that are copied from a DVD or CD as being locked for writing.

If you are a Mac OS user and have diffi culty saving over the existing fi les in this book, you can use these instructions so that you can update the lesson fi les as you work on them and also add new fi les to the lessons folder

Note that you only need to follow these instructions if you are unable to save over the existing lesson fi les, or if you are unable to save fi les into the lesson folder.

1 After copying the fi les to your computer, click once to select the ailessons folder, then choose File > Get Info from within the Finder (not Illustrator).

2 In the ailessons info window, click the triangle to the left of Sharing and Permissions to reveal the details of this section.

3 In the Sharing and Permissions section, click the lock icon, if necessary, in the lower right corner so that you can make changes to the permissions.

4 Click to select a specifi c user or select everyone, then change the Privileges section to Read & Write.

5 Click the lock icon to prevent further changes, and then close the window.

Working with the video tutorialsYour Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom DVD comes with video tutorials developed by the authors to help you understand the concepts explored in each lesson. Each tutorial is approximately fi ve minutes long and demonstrates and explains the concepts and features covered in the lesson.

The videos are designed to supplement your understanding of the material in the chapter. We have selected exercises and examples that we feel will be most useful to you. You may want to view the entire video for each lesson before you begin that lesson. Additionally, at certain points in a lesson, you will encounter the DVD icon. The icon, with appropriate lesson number, indicates that an overview of the exercise being described can be found in the accompanying video.

Setting up for viewing the video tutorialsThe DVD included with this book includes video tutorials for each lesson. Although you can view the lessons on your computer directly from the DVD, we recommend copying the folder labeled Videos from the Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom DVD to your hard drive.

Copying the video tutorials to your hard drive:1 Insert the Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom DVD supplied with this book.

2 On your computer desktop, navigate to the DVD and locate the folder named Videos.

3 Drag the Videos folder to a location onto your hard drive.

Adobe Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom

Viewing the video tutorials with the Adobe Flash PlayerThe videos on the Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom DVD are saved in the Flash projector format. A Flash projector fi le wraps the Digital Classroom video player and the Adobe Flash Player in an executable fi le (.exe for Windows or .app for Mac OS). However, please note that the extension (on both platforms) may not always be visible. Projector fi les allow the Flash content to be deployed on your system without the need for a browser or prior standalone player installation.

The accompanying video fi les on the DVD use the Adobe Flash Video format to make universal viewing possible for users on both Windows and Mac OS computers.

Playing the video tutorials:1 On your computer, navigate to the Videos folder you copied to your hard drive from the

DVD. Playing the videos directly from the DVD may result in poor quality playback.

2 Open the Videos folder and double-click the AIvideos_PC.exe (Windows) or AIvideos_Mac.app (Mac OS) to view the video tutorial.

3 Press the Play button to view the videos.

The Flash Player has a simple user interface that allows you to control the viewing experience, including stopping, pausing, playing, and restarting the video. You can also rewind or fast-forward, and adjust the playback volume.

Playback volume is also aff ected by the settings in your operating system. Be certain to adjust the sound volume for your computer, in addition to the sound controls in the Player window.

Adobe Illustrator CS5 Jumpstart

In this lesson, you have the opportunity to dive right into Adobe Illustrator CS5 and create an exciting illustration. This lesson helps you quickly discover some of the new features available in CS5. If you are a completely new user, you may want to start with Lesson 2, “Getting to know the Workspace,” and then return to this lesson.

Starting up Before starting, make sure that your tools and panels are consistent by resetting your workspace. See “Resetting Adobe Illustrator CS5 Preferences” on page 3.

You will work with several fi les from the ai01lessons folder in this lesson. Make sure that you have loaded the ailessons folder onto your hard drive from the supplied DVD. See “Loading lesson fi les” on page 4.

Use the accompanying video to gain a better understanding of how to use some of the features shown in this lesson. The video tutorial for this lesson can be found on the included DVD.

The project In this lesson you will create a comp (rough design) of a web page using some features that have been around for years, as well as new features recently added to Adobe Illustrator CS5.

1 Launch Adobe Illustrator CS5.

2 Choose File > Browse in Bridge or press the Go to Bridge button ( ) in the Application bar at the top of the workspace.

By pressing the Go to Bridge button, you launch a separate application called Adobe Bridge. Bridge is an indispensable application that acts as the central command center for all your CS5 applications and helps you to organize your Adobe Illustrator projects. You can use Bridge to help you easily locate fi les. With Adobe Bridge, you can see a preview of every fi le within any folder.

3 Once Bridge opens, navigate to the ai01lessons folder within the ailessons folder that you copied to your computer and double-click ai0101_done.ai to open it. If an embedded Profi le Mismatch dialog box appears, leave it at the defaults and press OK. The artwork for a rough design of a web page appears. You can keep this completed fi le open for reference, or choose File > Close to close it. If you are asked to save the fi le, choose No.

The Illustrator CS5 workspace is consistent with the other applications in the Creative Suite 5, which helps you to fi nd the tools you need faster, no matter which application you are using.
