• The US$ 41-billion Indian life insurance industry is considered the fifth largest life insurance market, and growing at a rapid pace of 32-34 per cent annually.
• Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) registered an 83 per cent increase in new business income in March 2010, while private players posted a 47 per cent growth in new business premium.
• Insurers sold 10.55 million new policies in 2009-10 with LIC selling 8.52 million and private companies 2.03 million policies.
• A growth of 18 per cent is expected in total premium income and is likely to cross the US$ 64.93 billion mark, according to B Mathur, Secretary General, Life Insurance Council.
• The first large insurance company, and the most famous in the world today, is Lloyd’s of London.
• This company was founded in 1689 by a group of men who met in Lloyd’s coffee house in London, and originally sold only ship insurance.
• There are records of ship insurance dating back to the days of early Rome, around 300 B.C.
• The first person ever to be insured was a ship’s captain named William Gibbons, who was insured by a group of Englishmen in 1583.
• The highest life insurance pay-out of all time was $18 million, paid to the widow of an American rancher in 1970!
by Llyods of London.
While playing on Australia's national cricket team from 1985 to 1994, MervHughes took out an estimated $370,000 policy on his trademark walrus
mustache, which, combined with his 6'4" physique and outstanding playing ability, made him one of the most recognized cricketers in the world.
The 47-year-old Dutch wine producer has had his nose and sense of smell insured for five
million Euros (£4 million) by Lloyd's of
London.
• In 1993, worldwide
famous food critic Egon

• Fearing that his foes would
break his left middle finger he so often use to flip them off,
the 63 year-old guitarist for the Rolling Stones and poster boy
for longevity through hard living had it
insured.
• This policy makes a lot of sense for soccer/British football player Beckham, 32, although surely his family would have his wife’s tabloid fame to fall back on if he ever suffers from an extended injury.
