From the director

From the chairman

Not too long ago, I heard a community leader reflect on a situation they were dealing with. The leader said, “Though this trial is not comfortable, we move forward with confidence.” I have often reflected on this statement when thinking about Sheltering Wings.

There are so many moments that bring challenges. Every person who walks in our doors or calls our helpline

has a story of pain, heartache, and fear. We’ve faced many days of uncertainty as we confront the possibility that reliable sources for funding may change. At the same time, the demand on our services is consistent and stretches our capacity. These are not comfortable times.

So how do we remain positive and move forward with confidence? It’s simple. We’ve witnessed miracles. We’ve seen lives transformed before our eyes. Our community has repeatedly rallied around us to provide advocacy, funding, and volunteers. That support has allowed us to meet the demand for our services and even expand some of what we do. And that’s so important, because when a victim of domestic abuse reaches out to us, she grants us the privilege of stepping into some of her most difficult and intimate moments, along with the trust that we will shower her with hope and healing.

Our days are hardly comfortable, and still we move forward with confidence. We’ve been called by God and equipped to help neighbors who suffer at the hands of abusers. We take that responsibility seriously, and work to build safe, stable, independent lives. And, with God leading our way, we know we can face whatever tomorrow brings.

In His service,

CASSIE MARTIN Executive Director

For a domestic violence shelter, the challenges never end. When your mission is to protect people who are being hurt by others, you deal with a constant stream of need. And when you choose to pursue that mission through an organization centered upon Christ’s example, you often face tensions with the secular world.

As 2015 began, the latter was much on our minds. Congress had made changes to laws regarding government funding for domestic abuse shelters. It appeared that we would lose that funding if we did not house adult men and women together in our shelter. We do serve male victims of domestic abuse and we secure safe housing elsewhere. No victim of domestic abuse regardless of gender should be without a safe haven.

On top of that challenge, we were grappling with a $433,000 mortgage balance from our new addition. Every dollar that went toward that mortgage was a dollar that wasn’t available to help victims. We studied our costs and trimmed everywhere we could without compromising the care we provide.

By the end of the year, optimism had prevailed. A clarification to the federal rules meant that the funds would continue to flow, and the community stepped up to help us. We received support from more than 90 local churches, 45 civic organizations, 135 businesses, and 1,650 individuals. That plus our prudent money management meant that we were able to pay off all of the shelter’s debt. As 2015 ended, Sheltering Wings was in its strongest financial condition in several years.

Years ago, when some food pantry volunteers said that our area needed a domestic violence shelter, the community stepped up and made Sheltering Wings a reality. Throughout the shelter’s history, when we faced needs, the response was immediate and overwhelming. 2015 was just the latest example. As we move forward, we pledge to continue to be good stewards of every dollar we receive, so we can bring hope to more victims of domestic violence and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. Thank you for your role in making that possible!

Sincerely,

DAN BOND Chairman, Board of Directors

OUR VISION SHELTERING WINGS WAS FORMED IN THE NAME AND FOR THE SAKE OF JESUS

CHRIST. WE WILL EXTEND THE LOVE AND COMPASSION OF CHRIST TO WOMEN AND THEIR

CHILDREN IN THE DESPERATE CIRCUMSTANCES OF DOMESTIC ABUSE. CHRIST WAS NEVER

COERCIVE OR OFFENSIVE AND NEITHER ARE OUR SERVICES. OUR ASSISTANCE WILL BE

OFFERED TO ANY VICTIM OF ANY BACKGROUND IN THE NAME OF CHRIST.

Although Sheltering Wings has served the community for many years, we recognize that there are many people who do not understand exactly how we work or what we do to help victims of domestic abuse. We’ll summarize our activities here.

I T S T A R T S W I T H A C A L LThe phone rings 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and on the other end is a victim who is in danger, or someone who is calling on behalf of a friend, neighbor, or relative. In many cases, we help them find resources in the community. We invite some to our shelter facility. The people who take the calls use what’s known as a lethality assessment to determine the degree of danger. During 2015, we answered 754 crisis calls and provided safe housing for 118 women and 122 children.

A S A F E P L A C E T O L I V ESheltering Wings has a homelike atmosphere. Each family has a room that includes four beds, a walk-in closet, a private bathroom with shower/tub, and a door that locks. Residents share a common kitchen and fully stocked pantry. There are lounge areas, as well as play and study areas for the children. Families are protected by state-of-the-art security systems. No one can enter the shelter facility without permission from our staff. We never reveal who is (or who is not) residing with us, in order to maintain confidentiality. Plus, our local police department closely monitors the surrounding area.

I N D I V I D U A L S U P P O R TSafety is our first objective, but our long-term goal is to equip and empower women to build safe, stable and independent lives. Residents work with a case manager who identifies their individual needs and connects them with the classes, support groups, and resources necessary to help them become self-sufficient. In 2015 we helped 101 women exit Sheltering Wings to a safe and independent life.

H E L P I N G K I D S , T O OChildren suffer from domestic abuse, even if the abuser never touches them. Without intervention, they’ll likely grow up believing that it’s acceptable for men to be abusive and for women to take that abuse. Through our Children’s Program, we help them identify what healthy relationships look like, so they can break the cycle of abuse and live safe, healthy adult lives.

O U R U L T I M A T E G O A LWe dream that we’ll be able to put ourselves out of business someday, because that would mean nobody was being abused. The best way to accomplish that goal is to educate the broader community about domestic violence, so everyone can become involved in preventing it. That’s why we offer a variety of outreach and educational programs, including our Teen Dating Violence Program for middle and high school students. In 2015, we spoke with chamber groups, civic organizations, businesses, schools, and churches, reaching nearly 20,000 people.

What exactly does Sheltering Wings do?

In 2015 we helped 101 women & children exit Sheltering Wings to a safe and independent life.

A mother’s words“Margie” arrived at Sheltering Wings after suffering years of abuse at the hands of her husband. She asked us to share this letter with the people and organizations who support the women and children who live under our roof.

D E A R F R I E N D S :Before coming to Sheltering Wings, I was in a bad place in my life. I felt alone, trapped, depressed and hopeless. I felt like I had no one to turn to. I was afraid to open up to others about what was going on because this was supposed to be the happiest time of my life. I was a new mom and had a good career. I tried to put on a happy face because I felt that was what was expected of me. I felt like no one else could understand what it was like to be in my shoes. I tried to convince myself that it was all in my head or maybe if I was a better wife, maybe he wouldn’t treat me that way.

Going to the shelter was not an easy decision for me, but I know now that it was the best decision I have made for myself and my child. The biggest thing that held me back from leaving my abuser was I felt trapped by the fact that I couldn’t afford to put a roof over myself and my child’s head. Sheltering Wings provided me with a safe and secure place to live. I was welcomed with open arms. I’ve received nothing but kindness and support from the staff and other residents. The staff has been there to listen when I am struggling or having a bad day. They never make me feel ashamed of my situation and have always encouraged me to see my strengths and realize the potential I have to create a better life for me and my daughter. I am so appreciative of the generosity Sheltering Wings and its donors have shown to me.

The donations of diapers, daily hygiene products, household items, and food have been a blessing because it helps reduce the financial burden during this difficult time. Now I can focus my resources on making improvements in my life and making sure my child has the things she needs. I am thankful for the community resources Sheltering Wings has connected me with in order to make positive changes in my life. Sheltering Wings has helped me become a better parent by providing educational resources and support from staff. Sheltering Wings is like a big family and everyone shares in the joys of my daughter’s smiles, laughter, and milestones.

I am thankful and appreciative of the kindness and generosity Sheltering Wings has shown me. I know that since I have come to Sheltering Wings I have become a different person. I am more confident and sure of what I want in life. I don’t know where my life will take me but I realize I deserve to be treated with respect. No words can express how thankful I am for everything Sheltering Wings has done for me and the impact it has had on my life.

May God bless you all,M A R G I E
