Intelligent digital video surveillance comes of age in China

Abstract: Video surveillance, driven by the wish to ensure public safety in the wake of the successful Beijing OlympicGames and Shanghai Expo, has gained much attention recently. As the semiconductor is a core device for intelligentdigital video, it occupies a critical position in the process of popularizing intelligent surveillance technologies. This articleexamines trends in the way the technology is developing, and the requirements it is placing on semiconductor products.

Safety is one of the most fundamental prerequisites for a happy life. There's no doubt that having remote eyes watchingover us can help to safeguard us. Advanced intelligent digital video surveillance systems are in demand, whether forpublic safety, emergency warnings, traffic monitoring or site security. They can even monitor for forest fires or bordersecurity violations.

In China, due to the large population and vast physical territory, guaranteeing border security and ensuring people canlive and work unmolested is far harder if we rely solely on other people. Therefore, despite the global economic downturnof recent years, the public security market in China has remained robust and continued to see growth, partly on the backof the "Safe China" program. Especially during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, domestically-manufactured surveillanceproducts were widely used and performed extraordinarily well, further driving the development of the domestic digitalvideo surveillance segment.

With digital video processing technology at its core, digital video surveillance systems integrate photoelectric sensors, computer networks, automatic controls and artificial intelligence technologies. In addition to all the features of traditionalCCTV surveillance systems, the new technology boasts such functions as remote video transmission and replay, automatic anomaly detection and alarms, and structured video data storage. Major technologies associated with digitalvideo surveillance system include video data compression, video analysis and interpretation.

How the technology is developing

Zheng Xiaolong, TI DSP business development manager says there are four core technologies being used in the digitalvideo surveillance segment: video compression; image processing, video display and video analysis (see Figure 1).Reviewing the development of the technology, it becomes apparent that digital audio and video compressiontechnologies have led to the establishment of compression standards. Digital audio and video compression technologiesinclude video encoding and decoding. H.264 has substituted MPEG4 as the mainstream video compression format ofchoice. SVC is a more efficient standard that has yet to be tested by the market. Among the various broadband andwireless digital surveillance systems, there is not only a need for multi-channel processing, but also multi-format,multi-rate and multi-stream support.

Shen Hongren, Marketing and Product manager at Fujitsu Semiconductor (Shanghai) identifies five major trends in thedevelopment of surveillance products in terms of technology and demand.

Networking

In terms of market demand, consumer account for significant demand but their appetite for HD is not as strong. They arelooking for low prices and public network connectivity, while project customers are less concerned about price and moreinterested in deploying HD products in intranet or private network environments.

In terms of technology development, the direction of travel is toward HD/ Full HD. Real-time compression (H.264) is upand running, and real-time streaming can now be achieved over IP networks.

Intelligent products

In terms of market demand, the appetite for intelligent video analysis (front-end and back-end), in addition to traditionalPTZ control camera steering/ zoom functions is growing and this will continue.

In terms of technology development, intelligent video analysis software, that enables mobile animal/ human face tracking, hazardous materials (static objects) monitoring, fire disaster monitoring and remotely tracking of officers or automobilesis growing. Most intelligent video analysis is conducted at the back end, such as via CMS or offline software analysis. However, some intelligent video analysis functions tend to be performed at the front end (camera) and these are useful inmonitoring important incidents analyzing data.

HD

In terms of market demand, the initial specification is 720P 30. Higher-spec products based on 720P 60 or 1080P 30 areemerging. Applications like LPR require 1080P 60 or even higher specifications.

In terms of technology development, to meet the demand for HD, sensor technology has moved toward advanced CMOS(1.3M, 2M, 5M); CMOS has caught up with CCD levels in terms of HDR and low-lux. At the same time, ISP, H.264 and HDlenses are all gaining ground.

Safety

In terms of market demand, DVR, NVR, HDD and Disk Array are all growing rapidly, making data storage easier andsafer.

In terms of technology development, the use of DVR/NVR is being extended to NAS or SAN and firewalls are beingstrengthened in order to make data storage safer and more fault-tolerant, and improving disaster recovery data responsecapabilities.

Consumer products vs. enterprise-class products

In terms of market demand, the features of the high-end surveillance market include diversified applications, customizedspecifications and, to some extent, diverse technology. At the same time, surveillance data is held in storage for longperiods. Compared to ordinary consumer products, surveillance product standards of quality are higher, requiringhigh-specification components that also offer high performance. The high-end surveillance industry supply chains mustdifferentiate themselves from consumer products.

In terms of technology development, the segment must work out how to develop CCD or S+CMOS, ISP, CODEC, IPVideo Streaming and HD CCTV separately, or else come up with ways to integrate them, at least partly. This isnecessary because no single SoC can fully meet high-end surveillance demands for the time being. This is a keydifference compared to the consumer market: unlike high-end solutions, a single chip is sufficient for entry-levelhousehold surveillance systems.

Turning the vision of a green planet into a reality

A green and clean earth, clear skies and blue oceans. It's a pretty vision and variations of it are loved by advertisingcopywriters everywhere. However, there's a tough road ahead and some significant technological advancements will beneeded before this vision transforms from an aspiration or publicity gimmick into concrete improvements to ourenvironment.

Abstract: One of the 'green energy' concept's defining characteristics is big increase in energy efficiency. Based oninterviews with a number of semiconductor manufacturers, the article examines ways of applying science and technologyto achieve better energy efficiency and reduce power consumption.

Promotion of green energy concept

The green energy concept is intricately tied to technology advancements. However, not all of the responsibility forrealizing the concept rests on the shoulders of technology companies. Dig a little deeper into the many variables and itquickly becomes apparent that the challenge is not only a technological one: winning the acceptance of consumers andpersuading them to change their behavior is also a big part of the puzzle.

Developing power management technologies

Current market trends show that consumer demand does exist for highly efficient and environmentally friendlysemiconductor products. The problem is that, in the battle for market share, greater cost-effectiveness and reduceddesign times are already posing difficulties to many semiconductor customers due to resource constraints. To overcomethis, chipmakers are under pressure to support unique electronics systems and to design solutions as fast as possible, speeding overall time to market. Against this backdrop, factor in the demand for efficient, environmentally sustainableproducts (which is higher than ever and still growing) and the competing pressures on chipmakers become easy to see.

Zheng Zhaoxiong of On Semiconductor stresses that the main trends in demand are for power managementsemiconductor products that deliver increased energy efficiency. Zheng says the company is not only focusing onpromoting on-state efficiency, but also improved power factor, reducing loads and light-load energy consumption, andprolonging battery life in particular. At the same time, the company is aiming to enhance product integrity, reduce thenumber of components and reduce PCB room and height to suit smaller, slimmer designs, integrated and effective deviceprotection and advanced package applications.

Wang Yun, senior marketing manager of Fujitsu Semiconductor (Shanghai) Co Ltd, says that a lack of differentiators inthe field of power management chips has made competition very fierce. Since they employ similar foundries andprocesses, many medium-sized and small fabless manufacturers are forced to compete on price in order to win marketshare. This, in turn, puts them under pressure to streamline and reduce the costs of their manufacturing processes andtechnologies. The manufacturers with cheap and efficient manufacturing processes will survive and prosper. Others willsuffer. Longer-term, Wang expects to see fewer small and medium sized players.

Interpretation of renewable energy automobiles from Fujitsu's several core technology solutions

China's auto industry has maintained a leading position in terms of global auto manufacturing and sales. However, aseries of problems loom on the horizon. Dependence on crude oil imports for more than 50 per cent of China's energyneeds (in line with certain other countries); pollution caused by vehicle exhausts, that accounts more than 65 per cent oftotal urban gas emissions…renewable energy vehicles represent by far the best opportunity to tackle both problems atonce, and have caught the world's attention. So it was not surprising that, at the recent Auto Electronics Summit inChongqing, electronics designs for renewable energy vehicles took pride of place.

"In fact, except for differences in driving style, there are no basic differences between renewable energy and traditionalvehicles," said Wang Yu, Marketing Director of Fujitsu Semiconductor (Shanghai). "Improving the driving and ridingexperience and raising safety standards are the key challenges for auto design. In terms of convenience and safety, video technologies are being applied more widely. As a core part of this renewable category of vehicle, motors need tobe highly efficient, harnessing high-performance and control technologies," he added. The Forum gave Fujitsu theopportunity to showcase its leading auto electronic solutions for overcoming these design challenges to Chineseautomotive electronics manufacturers and car makers.

Motor control is the key to renewable energy vehicles

The frequency conversion concept has been the centre of attention for designers of refrigerators, washing machines andair conditioners in recent years. The key is motor control technology. As the core part of renewable energy vehicles, electric vehicle motor controls have higher standards – stable motor operation, rapid acceleration and braking, in additionto greater energy-efficiency. This is because of key motor control technologies that have a direct impact on powermanagement, performance, driving experience and safety.

As well as being a global leader in traditional consumer and industrial automotive control solutions, Fujitsu is also aleader in renewable energy vehicle motor controls. Its 32-bit MCU MB91F267NA has been successfully applied in thisfield and recently, Fujitsu launched three electric vehicle motor control products in the MCU MB91580 family to cater to

Page 10: If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> - Fujitsu SEMICONDUCTOR LIMITED ASIA E...If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> ... contain driving motor control function,

the unique demands of renewable energy vehicles' motor controls. The products enable driving motor control functions forelectrical vehicles (EV) and hybrid vehicles (HV) thanks to the high-performance 32-bit, FLASH-embedded microcontroller"FR family". The MB91580 family provides an automotive driving motor control MCU with a dedicated embedded resolversensor interface in order to control the three-phase motor used in EVs and HVs, an area in which demand is growingrapidly across the world.

Fig 1: Motor control MCU roadmap

As renewable energy vehicle technologies become mature, motor control systems shoulder tougher requirements.Customers are looking for complicated counting methods without vector sensor controls and advanced model-basedprocessing capabilities, and better performance, efficiency, availability, together with lower cost. The MB91580 seriesoffers the most suitable CPU core and peripherals for EV/HV motor control. The dedicated interface circuit in the resolver(used for the EV/HV driving motor) is embedded in order to reduce system costs and to contribute to better motor mobilityand lower energy consumption. It does so by utilizing a high torque responsive control process which is required for theEV/HV driving motor.

Devising motor controls for high torque vehicles that are both highly efficient and low-cost is a significant challenge. TheMB91580 family reduces system cost and achieves rapid feedback control, meeting this challenge. The integratedMB91580's main functions include 12-bit A/D and R/D converters, an R/D converter testing function and an integrated, specialized counting circuit. This enables electric angle sine and cosine data to be tested by the onboard R/D converter.

"In addition to the solutions themselves, motor counting methods are very important. Fujitsu provides various keycounting methods, so motor controls for renewable energy vehicles actually have some technological advantages." WangYu points out.

High performance motor control systems usually include a core servo function, motion description and maintelecommunications, putting higher requirements to processors. The MB91580's CPU copes with those demands.

As the core part of renewable energy cars, motor controls not only affect the performance of the vehicle, but also drivingsafety. Fujitsu takes this into account when designing MCUs and ensures driving safety through six separatemechanisms, including self- diagnosis of the MCU before starting, self-diagnosis of the general line and self diagnosis ofRAM. It's rumored that Fujitsu's product plan will soon include redundancy of the core MCU, delivering even greaterprotection against any defect.

Fig 2: Motor control MCUs integrate six security features

Video technologies improve safety and the user experience

Well-known research company iSuppli says top suppliers must meet three key demands when developing automotivesystems. One is to support video display and feedback. In fact, automotive infotainment systems based on displayterminals and virtual instrument systems are the most attractive and the fastest-growing part in automotive electronics. These systems require a high-performance video graphics processing capability and call for a good deal of complexgraphics data to be managed at high speed. "Fujitsu placed emphasis on this market. At present, Fujitsu occupies aleading position in this field," said Wang Yu. Performance bottlenecks in ordinary video processing chips can be avoidedthrough real-time video information processing thanks to the integration of high-performance graphics processing with thecentral processor and the storage controller.

At this summit, Fujitsu demonstrated its panoramic 3D systems based on advanced video processing technologies,

Page 11: If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> - Fujitsu SEMICONDUCTOR LIMITED ASIA E...If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> ... contain driving motor control function,

which attracted a lot of attention. The panoramic video system is based on the MB86R11 Emerald-L 2D/3D graphicsSoC. It supports real-time video surveillance by four cameras in all directions. The MB86R11 applies unique videoprocessing counting methods. The video data collected by the four cameras can provide a panoramic picture of the car'ssurrounding environment by conducting video capture and 3D drawing through chips to achieve an immersive visualeffect, helping drivers to make correct judgments in all driving conditions.

Fig 3: Automotive video and image display applications

Panoramic video surveillance is one application of advanced video processing technologies. The MB86R11 can alsosupport automotive digital dashboard and navigation system displays. Virtual instrument technologies based on graphicschips are becoming widely used in middle- and high-end cars. In addition, Fujitsu has also devised reference solutionsusing MB91590 designs that support GDC graphics functions and backing display assistance. Another two MB91570products are targeted at segmental LCD dashboard applications.

In fact, panoramic video functions based on the MB86R11 not only provide comprehensive visual information, but alsoboost safety. "The solution can provide functions such as roadbed identification, traffic lane identification and road signidentification." Wang Yu added. In addition, the video chips featuring high processing capacity extend to safetyapplications. The automotive panoramic visual application can be used as a complete reference design to achieve avariety of functions still under development.

Collaboration helps to overcome technical problems for manufacturers

The proportion of vehicle cost that is accounted for by regular automotive electronics is 17 per cent. In hybrid automotiveelectronics, the figure rises to about 40 per cent. However, in electric vehicles, it is even higher, at 60 per cent.Electronic circuits play a decisive role in function, performance and vehicle cost. "Electronic control technologies ofrenewable energy cars are more complicated. Carmakers have to carry out complicated functional and logic developmentalong with algorithm and model-based simulations. These are a challenge for us. It's helpful to get more technical supportfrom solution providers," explained an R&D manager from one well-known auto manufacturer.

In fact, in order to incorporate semiconductor solutions into product designs successfully, semiconductor companiesprovide various support tools. For example, Fujitsu provides engineers with suites, sample procedures and graphicdesign tools, as well as a graphics library.

"In addition to important functional and logic designs, auto manufacturers have to conduct a lot of site tests as they areessential. While providing our customers with mature reference design solutions and supporting application developmentbased on reference design, we also provide them with guidance. This is based on our considerable site supportexperience, which is very important to manufacturers and accelerates product development, as well as improving productperformance," said Wang. "Particularly in terms of core motor controls for renewable energy cars, we have a strong R&Dteam for motor controls and driving technologies in China. Lots of application development experience makes oursolutions better suited to local Chinese customers."

Finding ways to reduce renewable energy vehicle costs has been a common focus for the whole industry. Semiconductordevices cannot continue to make up over 60 per cent of the cost of electric cars.

"We have launched several solutions that incorporate low-cost designs, and others will follow. For example, we willintroduce high-voltage MCU products that provide integrated high voltage, such as 40V, 60V or 80V, making motor controlsolutions for things like doors, windows and wipers cheaper and simpler," said Wang Yu. In addition to high-voltageMCUs, Fujitsu is also integrating more functions to reduce cost. For example, sensor interface and control functions areintegrated in the latest motor control MCU, analog ICs have been integrated into Flash MCUs, and battery managementfunctions are integrated in high-voltage MCUs.
