RUAG IED Defeat Training

“The IED problem is getting out of control. We’ve got to stop the bleeding.” titles a report by Rick Atkinson, a Washington Post Staff Writer, in September 2007. IEDs, Improvised Explosive Devices, are the weapons of choice of terrorism and irregular forces, as experienced in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Challenge

By placing explosives – either home made or modified artillery or mortar grenades – along the roads where peacekeeping or peace-enforcement troops are patrolling or along the logistic routes from camps to airports, the IED layers succeed in killing soldiers and civil-ians and trying to disturb operations and influence the public support in those NATO and other countries which commit to the world-wide fight against terror.

While technologies and procedures are developed to detect or jam possible IEDs, the issue of a psychological threat that hinders clear actions in the event of an IED attack is still a great problem for all troops. How can soldiers and their commanders learn to handle this challenge in their pre-deployment training?

The Solution

The answers are “Train as close to the circumstances of an IED attack as possible” and “Teach the most effective actions after an IED at-tack, by training appropriate drills”.

RUAG, one of the worlds top provider for Live Simulation, supports its customers with a complete, scalable set of IED Training systems. These are based on the family of universal explosive simulation de-vices, called COSIM pyrotechnic audio-visual cueing systems. RUAG IED Defeat Training systems can be installed in the field, either fixed or mobile, in buildings and cars and even on persons to allow for full scenario exercises.

RUAG IED Training Systems

– provide situational awareness improving the skills of soldiers to identify and avoid IEDs early, thus reducing the number of victims,

– avoid losses caused by improper actions in the event of an IED attack, – are quick, easy and safe to deploy, – can easily be adopted to changing IED scenarios, – have undergone and successfully achieved safety approvals of different national safety verification authorities,

– are internationally proven solutions, – offer significant price advantages because of the large number of systems sold,

– provide the training results that military leaders and instructors are looking for!

A wide portfolio of appropriate COSIM-com-patible pyrotechnic cartridges with various smoke (black, white, grey and coloured) as well as flash and bang effects are readily available on the world market. The systems replicate different levels of threat and can be

adopted to particular training situations. However, not only the audio-visual effects of IEDs are replicated, the training devices also support jamming training and direct feed-back on casualty assessment. This forces leaders to take proper action when exercise

participants in the near of a simulated explo-sion are automatically tagged as wounded or killed. The kill information can be injected into Tactical Engagement Simulators such as MILES via standard interfaces to integrate with in-service training capabilities.
