LITERATURE REVEIW
LITERATURE:
Literature refers to a collection of published information/materials on a particular area of research or topic of interest.
• Books
• Newspapers/Magazines
• Articles
• Reports
• Research papers
• Journals
• Conference Proceedings
• Press Releases
• Videos/Audio
• Summary of existing knowledge
• Critical evaluation
• What has been done before
• What have others said
• What is the relevance
• What is the difference
• Agreements / disagreements
• Are there any flows
REVEIW
To review the literature means to be able to identify:
1) what has been established, discredited and accepted in your field
2) Areas of controversy or conflict among different schools of thought
3) Problems or issues that remain unsolved
4) Emerging trends and new approaches
5) How your research extends, builds upon, and departs from previous
research.
PURPOSE OF LITERATURE
REVEIW
The first, the preliminary search that helps you to generate and refine
your research ideas. ( Identify the research topic)
The second, often referred to as the critical review or critical literature
review, is part of your research project.
HOW T O WRITE AQ LITERATURE
REVEIW 1) Collect, Evaluate and Select literature
COLLECT - sources ( online ,off line)
- Online databases
- Search engines
- Google Scholar
- JSTOR
- ProQuest
- EBSCO
EVALUATE
• What question or problem is the AUTHOR addressing?
• What are the key concepts and how are they defined?
• What are the key theories, models and methods? Does the research use
established frameworks or take an innovative approach?
• What are the results and conclusions of the study?
• How does the publication relate to other literature in the field? Does it
confirm, add to, or challenge established knowledge?
• How does the publication contribute to your understanding of the topic?
What are its key insights and arguments?
• What are the strengths and weaknesses of the research?
SELECT
Make sure the sources you use are credible, and you read any landmark
studies and major theories in your field of research.
The scope of your review will depend on your topic and discipline: in the
sciences you usually only review recent literature, but in the humanities you
might take a long historical perspective (for example, to trace how a concept
has changed in meaning over time).
It is important to keep track of your sources with citations.
WRITE YOUR LITERATURE
REVIEW
Like any other academic text, your literature review should have
an introduction a main body, and a conclusion.
FRAMING THE RESEARCH
HYPOTHESIS
Hypotheses are potential explanations that can account for our
observations of the external world.
They usually describe cause-and-effect relationships between a
proposed mechanism or process (the cause) and our observations (the
effect).
It is a probable answer to a research question, which can be tested
TYPE OF
HYPOTHESIS 1) Null Hypothesis : States that there is no relationship between
variables
e.g. : there is no relationship between hours of study and academic
performance
2) Alternate hypothesis: States that there is a relationship between two
variables
e.g. There is a significant relationship between hours of study and
academic performance
