A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND INDEED

Once upon a time there lived a boy named Irfan. He was a perfect

boy. He had a best friend named Maqbool. He was like a brother to Irfan. One day Irfan’s uncle died. So he had to stay at the uncle’s house for an entire day and night. And it was only after the burial of his uncle’s body that he remembered about the Maths homework. But as it was already very late at night, he had to have dinner and go to sleep. The next morning he got ready to go to school. He walked and walked until he reached his school. When he entered the class he told Maqbool

and Irfan didn’t do his homework. When madam checked it she saw Irfan’s notebook incomplete. . So she was going to punish him. Then suddenly Maqbool stood up and said, “Maa’m, he didn’t do his homework because, yesterday his uncle’s passed away. So he couldn’t do anything. And he had loved his uncle too much. And his thoughts are full of his beloved uncle”. When madam heard it she began to weep and told Irfan “ Irfan, Maqbool is not only your friend, but a brother also”. Irfan was so happy that he hugged Maqbool.

What is reading? Reading is the act of understanding written symbols and

reading as the act of “looking at the written or printed matter in order to comprehend its meaning by interpreting the characters or symbols of which it is composed”. Reading is one of the major hobbies of the people around the world. However, recently, it has been losing its hold on the world. The reason can be attributed to the increasing popularity of the electronic media.

We all know that books present a gateway to knowledge and also a ticket to the other worlds. However, since the invention of the electronic media, the people’s love for reading has taken a dip. When it comes to today’s generation, both kids and adults alike do not nurture the love for reading and looks down at reading as a boring act and considers the readers as anoraks. Reading is a hobby that needs time, effort and it can offer endless pleasure to the

readers. It is often said that, when you raise a reader you raise a leader in turn. Harry S Truman, a famed personality once said, “Not all readers are leaders, but sure all the leaders are readers”.

power to share knowledge, to improve one’s linguistic competence. Besides, reading is also known to improve one’s imaginative faculty and stimulate minds. It might take some time to develop an interest for reading, but once you develop a love for reading, there is no end to it. You are never too young to start reading and never too old to stop it. Reading is a hobby that has no time limits. However, it is always good to start early. When we raise today’s generation, we should remember that for them to become successful in their life, reading should be made a big part of their life.

There are a few ways to develop the love for reading among the Students. They are: making them a collection to call as their own, turning off television sets and giving more time for reading, making them read aloud and choosing books based on their interests. To learn more about a book, you can even gift yourself a book on every world book day observed on 23 of April. Another thing that can be done to start reading is to take frequent trips to the library or bookstores so that you will be familiarise with the latest arrivals. Remember, never force yourself or others for reading as it might destroy your willingness for reading.
