ICSB PRESIDENT LETTER TO PRESENTING AUTHORS

Dear Colleagues, on behalf of the ICSB global community, I’d like to thank you for submitting your work to the ICSB 2016 World

Conference. each year the ICSB World Conference draws the world’s leading scholars, educators, policy makers and practitioners to present empirical and theoretical research and discuss current issues to help shape future priorities.

This year we were proud to receive over 350 submissions under the theme of Sustainable Entrepreneurship in Society – Transforming Our World Together. We accepted approximately 60%.

The focus of this conference is on the role of entrepreneurship and innovation in advancing the sustainable development goals of a society. Today, more than ever, companies are looking at their core business, as well as

philanthropy, advocacy and partnerships, to support society in ways that also contribute to profitability.

The excellent mix of competitive papers, workshops, teaching cases, and development papers shows the truly global nature of the ICSB network. With a better understanding of the programs and opportunities for entrepreneurs, governments around the world can experience transformational change.

When ICSB made the call to our community world-wide to share your wisdom and knowledge on Smes and the Un Sustainable Development goals, you answered us with a surge of research, papers, and workshops. I am proud to announce that the three highest submissions where on 1- Small and medium enterprises; 2- Sustainable Development goals, and 3- education and Pedagogy. This matters and that is why ICSB is the premier research and policy organization in the world.

Special heart-felt congratulations to those winning best paper awards. You make your colleges, universities, organization, country, family and friends proud. We celebrate with you.

I wish you the best of luck in the development of your research agenda, and look forward to interacting with you at ICSB 2016. The future is bright for research collaborations.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Ki-Chan Kim President, International Council for Small Business (ICSB)-(2015-16)

SECRETARy-GENERAL Of THE UNITED NATIONS LETTER TO PRESENTING AUTHORS

Dear Colleagues,

Dr. Kim Ki-Chan, President of the International Council for Small Business, Dr. ayman Tarabishy,

executive Director of the ICSB, members of the ICSB Board, cultures of the ministerial round

table, mr. Joo Young-Sup, Small and medium Business administration minister of the republic

of Korea, and ms. maria Contreras-Sweet, United States Small Business administrator. Ladies

and gentleman, I am pleased to greet all participants at this conference of the International

Council for Small Business. We are now well into the first year of the 2030 agenda for sustainable

development, our transformative plan to ensure a life of dignity for all. The ambitious sustainable

development goals specifically call for policies that encourage the growth of small and medium sized

enterprises. That is because these businesses can create a more sustainable world, with better jobs, greater

respect for the environment, and more inclusive societies. I hope you will find creative ways for small businesses to

help reach the SDg’s, and I encourage you to join the valuable United nations global Compact Initiative. The United

Nations fully supports your efforts to be responsible toward the societies where you operate and to help create a

better future for all. In this spirit, I wish you great success.

Thank you.

The Honorable Ban Ki-moon Secretary-General of the United Nations

PSED WORkSHOP: US AND fOUR COUNTRy, fIVE COHORT DATA SETSBy Paul D. Reynolds and Diana M. Hechavarria

The only data sets that provide a description of the entrepreneurial process, or business creation, for representative samples of those in the venture creation process are those that have implemented the Panel Studies of entrepreneurial Dynamics [PSeD] protocols. While the most extensive, fully documented data in the public domain are the two U.S. cohorts [PSED I, II], critical variables have been harmonized across five data sets representing four countries [australia, China, Sweden, and the United States]. a two part, three hour workshop on the development of these data sets, their structure, and how to utilize them for analysis will be provided on 17-18 June 2016 as part of the ICSB annual conference.

each participant is expected to have an explicit research question or topic for discussion in the second session, on 18 June 2016. This session will be devoted to discussions, led by the workshop team, on how the PSeD data sets can help provide answers to each participant’s research issue. Participants will receive the most benefit from the second day workshop session if they have a laptop with the SPSS statistical package for the second day session.

HUmANE ENTREPRENEURSHIP RESEARCH CONSORTIUm —DEVELOPING SCALE AND DATA COLLECTIONby: KiChan Kim, Sargeant Winslow, Ayman El Tarabishy

Small and medium-sized enterprises (Smes) are responsible for an estimated 50 percent of total employment worldwide and are a key driver of employment and economic activity. Smes make up more than 90 percent of private sector companies worldwide and generate over 60 percent of formal jobs in africa, asia, and Latin america. In low-income countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan africa, Smes make up to 80 percent of jobs. While Smes presently play a crucial role in developing countries, their impact on emerging economies is estimated to yield nearly 600 million jobs to asia and Sub-Saharan africa within the next 15 years.

accordingly, ICSB recognizes that, thus far, entrepreneurship has focused on the bottom line – the creation of resources and profit for corporations – while ignoring the health of the planet and major segments of society. entrepreneurship must focus on the triple bottom line – the intersection between innovation, opportunities, and sustainability.

To do this and with our call for Sme DaY, ICSB is promoting new research domain titled “Humane entrepreneurship” as covered at the Un on June 16th. This workshop is for those interested in learning more and participating in a new research initiative.

DEVELOPmENT Of mULTINATIONAL RESEARCH ALLIANCES: A WORkSHOP TO LINk ICSB AffILIATES CREATION Of ImPACT-ORIENTED RESEARCH TOPICS By K. Mark Weaver, Pat Dickson, Brian Gibson, and Ayman Tarabishy

The research alliance workshop’s primary goal is to create replicable research topics in ICSB affiliates. Replication across countries can help identify cultural differences, economic differences, and political support/barriers and add validation to research topics.

one of the criticisms of entrepreneurial research has been that small samples from local regions are often radically different in sample selection and have marginal ability to say much more than “this is the way it was in……” They have little or no generalizability or ability to look at impacts in larger regions/countries and also then are limited in the ability to impact public policy, even in the region where the original data collection occurred.

Egypt & EntrEprEnEurship: past-prEsEnt-FuturEby: Ahmed Osman, Middle East Council for Small Business & Entrepreneurship (MCSBE), EG; Ahmed Mohamed Shalaby, Tatweer Misr, EG and Ayman Ismail, DMG, EG, and Mohamed Fahmy (Maksaby)

The famous economist, Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950), was among the first to lay out a clear concept of entrepreneurship. Schumpeter pointed out the many ways that entrepreneurs innovate. He called attention to the fact that not only do they innovate by figuring out how to use inventions, but they also innovate by inventing new means of production, new products, and new forms of organization. entrepreneurs in other words, improve the productive capacity of society by generating the “creative destruction” of positive economic change.

Egypt  is in the midst a new iteration of entrepreneurship. It is based on the idea that business innovation must be harnessed to fundamentally reinvent and redefine the meaning of compensated work. In the new economy business innovation is challenged to improve the human experience and preserve the planet that supports it.

This workshop and subsequent conference in Egypt in November 2016 focuses on the intersections between innovation, opportunity recognition, and sustainability. Egypt version of entrepreneurship is a youth driven effort to create viable “work opportunities” in an economy now distant from its agricultural and industrial forerunners.
