OPERATOR'S SAFETY INFORMATION

MANUAL ON THE UNIT

A4_ DANGER: Never use blades withline trimmer attachment. Never use flail-ing devices with any attachment. Thisunit (when used with supplied line trim-mer attachment) is designed for linetrimmer use only. Use of any other ac-cessories with line trimmer attachmentwill increase the risk of injury.If situations occur which are not cov-ered in this manual, use care andgood judgment. If you need assis-tance, contact your Sears ServiceCenter or call 1-800-235-5878.OPERATOR SAFETY• Dress properly. Always wear safety

glasses or similar eye protection whenoperating, or performing maintenanceon your unit. (Safety glasses areavailable.) Eye protection should bemarked Z87.

• Always wear face or dust mask if op-eration is dusty.

• Always wear heavy, long pants, longsleeves, boots, and gloves. Wearingsafety leg guards is recommended.

• Always wear foot protection. Do notgo barefoot or wear sandals.

• Secure hair above shoulder length.Secure or remove loose clothing andjewelry or clothing with loosely hang-ing ties, straps, tassels, etc. They canbe caught in moving parts.

• Being fully covered also helps protectyou from debris and pieces of toxicplants thrown by spinning line/blade.

• Stay Alert. Do not operate unit whenyou are tired, ill, upset or under influ-ence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.Watch what you are doing; use com-mon sense.

• Wear hearing protection.• Never start or run the engine inside

a closed room or building. Breathingexhaust fumes can kill.

• Keep handles free of oil and fuel.• Always use the handlebar and a

properly adjusted shoulder strapwith a blade (see ASSEMBLY).

UNIT/MAINTENANCE SAFETY

_WARNING: Stop unitand dis-connect the spark plug before per-forming maintenance (except carbure-tor adjustments).• Look for and replace damaged or

loose parts before each use. Look forand repair fuel leaks before use. Keepunit in good working condition.

• Throw away blades that are bent,warped, cracked, broken, or damagedin any other way. Replace trimmerhead parts that are cracked, chipped,broken, or damaged in any other waybefore using the unit.

• Maintain unit according to recom-mended procedures. Keep bladesharp. Keep cutting line at the properlength.

• Installrequiredshieldproperlybeforeusingtheunit.Usethemetalshieldforallmetalbladeuse.Usetheplasticshieldforalllinetrimmeruse.

CUTTING SAFETY

_LWARNING: Inspect the area tobe cut before each use Remove ob-jects (rocks, broken glass, nails, wire,string, etc.) which can be thrown or be-come entangled in the blade or trimmerhead

• Keep others including children, ani-mals, bystanders, and helpers at least50 feet (15 meters) away. Stop engineimmediately if you are approached.

• Always keep engine on the right-hand side of your body.

• Hold the unit firmly with both hands.• Keep firm footing and balance. Do

not overreach.

• Keep blade or trimmer head belowwaist level. Do not raise engineabove your waist.

• Keep all parts of your body awayfrom blade, trimmer head, and muf-fler when engine is running. A hotmuffler can cause serious burns.

• Cut from your left to your right.Cutting on right side of the shield willthrow debris away from the operator.

• Use only in daylight or good artificiallight.

• Use only for jobs explained in thismanual.

TRANSPORTING AND STORAGE• Stop the unit before carrying• Keep muffler away from your body• Allow the engine to cool and secure

the unit before storing or transport-ing it in a vehicle

6. Before using the unit, tighten theknob securely by turning clockwise.

4. Remove the screwdriver.ATTACHING THE PLASTIC SHIELD

_IkWARNING: The shield must beproperly installed. The shield providespartial protection from the risk ofthrown objects to the operator andothers and is equipped with a line lim-iter blade which cuts excess line to theproper length. The line limiter blade(on underside of shield) is sharp andcan cut you.1. Remove wing nut from shield.2. Insert bracket into slot on shield.3. Pivot shield until bolt )asses

INSTALLATION OF THE TRIMMERHEADNOTE: Before installing the trimmerhead, make sure the dust cup and re-taining washer are positioned on theshaft of the gearbox. The retainingwasher must be positioned with theraised section toward the gearbox.1. Align hole in the dust cup with the

hole in the side of the gearbox byrotating the dust cup.

2. Insert a small screwdriver intoaligned holes. This will keep theshaft from turning while tighteningtrimmer head.

NOTE: Make sure all parts are prop-erly installed as shown in the illustra-tion before installing the trimmer head.3. While holding the screwdriver in

position, thread trimmer head ontothe shaft by turning counterclock-wise (looking from bottom of unit).Only tighten hand tight!

_I, DANGER: Ensure handlebaris installed when using brushcutterattachment. To avoid serious injury,the barrier portion of the handlebarmust be installed as shown to providea barrier between operator and thespinning blade.1. Locate the decal on the handlebar.

This decal includes an arrow. Posi-tion the handlebar with the mount-ing bracket at the end of the arrow.

2. Position the bracket cover over thehandlebar. Again make sure thehandlebar is at the end of the arrow.

3. Insert screws and hand tightenonly. Be sure the handlebar isinstalled correctly; then, tighteneach screw securely with the hexwrench.

ASSEMBLY OF SHOULDER STRAP

,I_WARNING: Proper shoulderstrap and handlebar adjustments mustbe made with the engine completelystopped before using unit.1. Insert your right arm and head

through the shoulder strap and al-low it to rest on your left shoulder.Make sure the danger sign is onyour back and the hook is to theright side of your waist.

NOTE: A one-half twist is built into theshoulder strap to allow the strap to restflat on the shoulder.2. Adjust the strap, allowing the hook

to be about 6 inches (15 cm) belowthe waist.

3. Fasten the strap hook to the clamplocated between the throttle triggerand the handlebar mounting bracketand lift the tool to the operatingposition.

4. Try on shoulder strap and adjustfor fit and balance before startingthe engine or beginning a cuttingoperation.

NOTE: It may be necessary to relo-cate the shoulder strap clamp on theshaft for proper balancing of unit.TO RELOCATE SHOULDER STRAPCLAMP:1. Loosen and remove both clamp

ATTACHING THE METAL SHIELD

,_IkWARNING: The metal shield

must be properly installed on the toolanytime the tool is used with a blade.The forward tip of the metal shieldhelps to reduce the occurrence ofblade thrust which can cause seriousinjury such as amputation to the oper-ator or bystanders. Failure to installthe shield in the position shown belowcan result in serious injury to the oper-ator. The length of the shield must bealigned with the length of the shaft.

2. Insert and thread the 4 mountingscrews through the holes of thegearbox and the metal shield.Tighten evenly and securely withthe hex wrench provided.

INSTALLATION OF THE METALBLADE

'_ WARNING: Wear protectivegloves when handling or performingmaintenance on the blade to avoid inju-ry. The blade is sharp and can cut youeven when it is not moving.

_,WARNING: Do not use anyblades, or fastening hardware otherthan the washers and nuts shown in thefollowing illustrations. Replacementparts must be purchased at Sears andinstalled as shown below. Failure to useproper parts can cause the blade to flyoff and seriously hurt you or others.NOTE: The dust cup and retainingwasher are located on the gearboxshaft and not in the parts bag. All otherfasteners mentioned in the following as-sembly steps are in the parts bag.1. Remove the retaining washer from

the threaded shaft of the gearbox.Leave the dust cup on the shaft.

2. Install the blade and the retainingwasher over the threaded shaft.

3. Make sure the raised part of the re-taining washer is facing the gearboxand the raised area fits into the holein the center of the blade.

4. Slide the blade and retaining wash-er onto the shaft of the gearbox.

5. Place the cupped washer onto theshaft. Make sure the cupped sideof the washer is toward the blade.

6. Install the blade nut by threadingonto the shaft counterclockwise.

NOTE: Make sure all parts are in placeas illustrated, and the blade is sand-wiched between the dust cup and theretaining washer. There should be nospace between the blade and the dustcup or the retaining washer.7. Align hole in dust cup with hole in

side of gearbox by rotating theblade.

8. Insert a small screwdriver intoaligned holes. This will keep theshaft from turning while tighteningthe blade nut.

9. Tighten blade nut firmly with awrench while holding screwdriver inposition.

10. Remove the screwdriver.11. Turn blade by hand. If the blade

binds against the shield, or appearsto be uneven, the blade is not cen-tered, and you must reinstall.

NOTE: To remove blade, insert screw-driver into aligned holes. Unthread thenut and remove parts. Be sure to storeparts and instructions for future use.

ON/STOP SWITCHThe ON/STOP switch is located on thetrigger handle and is used to stop theengine. To stop the engine, push andrelease the engine ON/STOP switch.PRIMER BULBThe PRIMER BULB removes air fromthe carburetor and fuel lines and fillsthem with fuel. This allows you to startthe engine with fewer pulls on thestarter rope. Activate the primer bulbby pressing it and allowing it to returnto its original form.

START LEVERThe START LEVER helps to supply fuelto the engine to aid in starting. Acti-vate the starting system by moving thestart lever to the START position. DONOT squeeze the throttle trigger untilthe engine has started and runs. Afterthe engine starts, allow the engine towarm-up 5 seconds, then fullysqueeze the throttle trigger to deacti-vate the starting system (start leverreturns to RUN position).COUPLERThe COUPLER enables optional at-tachments to be installed on the unit.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

_ILWARNING: Be sureto readthe fuel information in the safety rulesbefore you begin. If you do not under-stand the safety rules, do not attemptto fuel your unit. Call 1-800-235-5878.FUELING ENGINE

_ILWARNING: Remove fuel capslowly when refueling.This engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation,gasoline must be mixed with a goodquality synthetic 2-cycle air-cooled en-gine oil. We recommend Craftsmanbrand synthetic oil. Mix gasoline and oilat a ratio of 40:1. A 40:1 ratio is ob-tained by mixing 3.2 ounces of oil with 1gallon of unleaded gasoline. Includedwith this brushcutter is a 3.2 ounce con-tainer of oil. Pour the entire contents ofthis container into 1 gallon of gasoline toachieve the proper fuel mixture. DO NOTUSE automotive oil or marine oil. Theseoils will cause engine damage. Whenmixing fuel, follow instructions printed oncontainer. Once oil is added to gasoline,shake container momentarily to assurethat the fuel is thoroughly mixed. Alwaysread and follow the safety rules relatingto fuel before fueling your unit.IMPORTANTAlcohol blended fuels (called gasohol orusing ethanol or methanol) can attractmoisture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage. Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of anengine while in storage. To avoid en-gine problems, empty the fuel systembefore storage for 30 days or longer.Drain the gas tank, start the engine and

let it run until the fuel lines and carbure-tor are empty. Use fresh fuel next sea-son. Never use engine or carburetorcleaner products in the fuel tank orpermanent damage may occur.See the STORAGE section for addition-al information.HOW TO STOP YOUR UNIT• Release the throttle trigger.• Push and release the engine ON/

STOP switch. The switch will auto-matically return to the ON position.Wait 5 seconds before attempting torestart unit to allow switch to reset.

MOWING - Your trimmer is ideal formowing in places conventional lawnmowers cannot reach. In the mowingposition, keep the line parallel to theground. Avoid pressing the head intothe ground as this can scalp theground and damage the tool.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FORUSE WITH BRUSH BLADE• Blade Thrust is a reaction that only

occurs when using a bladed unit. Thisreaction can cause serious injurysuch as amputation. Carefully studythis section. It is important that youunderstand what causes blade thrust,how you can reduce the chance of itsoccurring, and how you can remain incontrol of unit if blade thrust occurs.

• WHAT CAUSES BLADE THRUST -Blade Thrust can occur when thespinning Made contacts an object thatit does not cut. This contact causesthe Made to stop for an instant andthen suddenly move or 'thrust" awayfrom the object that was hit. The"thrusting" reaction can be violentenough to cause the operator to bepropelled in any direction and losecontrol of the unit. The uncontrolledunit can cause serious injury if theblade contacts the operator or others.

• WHEN BLADE THRUST OCCURS- Blade Thrust can occur withoutwarning if the Made snags, stalls, orbinds. This is more likely to occur inareas where it is difficult to see thematerial being cut. By using the unitproperly, the occurrence of bladethrust will be reduced and the opera-tor will be less likely to lose control.

• Cut only grass, weeds, and woodybrush up to 1/2 inch (1 cm) in diame-ter with the brush blade. Do not let theMade contact material it cannot cutsuch as stumps, rocks, fences, metal,etc., or clusters of hard, woody brushhaving a diameter greater than 1/2inch (1 cm).

• A dull blade is likely to snag andthrust. Ensure that the blade issharp. Replacement blades areavailable at Sears.

• Cut only at full throttle. The bladewill have maximum cutting powerand is less likely to bind or stall.

• "Feed" the blade deliberately andnot too rapidly. The blade can thrustaway if it is fed too rapidly.

• Cut only from your left to your right.Cutting on right side of the shield willthrow debris away from the operator.

• Use the shoulder strap and keep afirm grip on the unit with both hands.A properly adjusted shoulder strapwill support the weight of the unit,freeing your arms and hands to con-trol and guide the cutting motion.

• Keep feet comfortably spread apartand braced for a possible sudden,rapid thrust of unit. Do not overreach.Keep firm footing and balance.

• Keep blade below waist level; it willbe easier to maintain control of unit.

• Do not raise the engine above yourwaist as the blade can come dan-gerously close to your body.

• Do not swing unit with such forcethat you are in danger of losing yourbalance.

Bring the engine to cutting speed be-fore entering the material to be cut.Always release the throttle trigger andallow engine to return to idle speedwhen not cutting. The blade should

not turn while the engine is running atidle. If the blade turns at idle, do notuse your unit. Refer to the CARBURE-TOR ADJUSTMENT section or contactyour Sears Service Center.• Maintain good firm footing while using

the unit. Do this by planting feet firmlyin a comfortable apart position.

• Cut while swinging the upper part ofyour body from left to right.

• As you move forward to the nextarea to cut, be sure to maintain yourbalance and footing.

a clean, hard area while engine isrunning. Debris such as gravel, sand,dust, grass, etc., could be picked upby the air intake and thrown outthrough discharge opening, damagingunit, property, or causing serious injuryto bystanders or operator.

• Never place objects inside the blow-er tubes, vacuum tubes or bloweroutlet. Always direct the blowing de-bris away from people, animals,glass, and solid objects such astrees, automobiles, walls, etc. Theforce of air can cause rocks, dirt, orsticks to be thrown or to ricochetwhich can hurt people or animals,break glass, or cause other damage.

• Never run unit without the properequipment attached. When usingyour unit as a blower, always installblower tubes.

• Check air intake opening, blowertubes or vacuum tubes frequently,always with engine stopped andspark plug disconnected. Keepvents and discharge tubes free ofdebris which can accumulate andrestrict proper air flow.

• Never place any object in air intakeopening as this could restrict properair flow and cause damage to the unit.

• Never use for spreading chemicals,fertilizers, or other substances whichmay contain toxic materials.

• To avoid spreading fire, do not usenear leaf or brush fires, fireplaces,barbecue pits, ashtrays, etc.

CULTIVATOR SAFETY

_,WARNING: Rotating tines cancause serious injury. Keep away fromrotating tines. Stop the engine and dis-connect the spark plug before unclog-ging tines or making repairs.

,_ WARNING: Inspect the area tobe cultivated before starting the unit.Remove all debris and hard and sharpobjects such as rocks, vines,branches, rope, string, etc.• Avoid heavy contact with solid objects

that might stop the tines. If heavy con-tact occurs, stop the engine and in-spect the unit for damage.

• Never operate the cultivator withoutthe tine cover in place and properlysecured.

• Keep the tines and guard clear ofdebris.

• After striking a foreign object, stopthe engine, disconnect the sparkplug and inspect the cultivator fordamage. Repair before restarting.

• Disconnect attachment from the driveengine before cleaning the tines witha hose and water to remove anybuild-up. Oil the tines to prevent rust.

• Always wear gloves when servicing orcleaning the tines. The tines becomevery sharp from use.

• Do not run unit at high speed unlesscultivating.

HEDGE TRIMMER SAFETY

• Never discharge snow onto publicroads or near moving traffic.

• Clear snow from slopes by going upand down; never across. Use cau-tion when changing directions. Nev-er clear snow from steep slopes.

storage.• Store in a clean dry area.• Lightly oil external metal surfaces.FUEL SYSTEMEmpty the fuel system before storagefor 30 days or longer. Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alter-native in minimizing the formation offuel gum deposits during storage. Addstabilizer to the gasoline in the fueltank or fuel storage container. Followthe mix instructions found on stabilizercontainer. Run engine at least 3 min-utes after adding stabilizer.Craftsman 40:1,2-cycle engine oil (aircooled) is already blended with fuelstabilizer. If you do not use this Searsoil, you can add a fuel stabilizer toyour fuel tank.ENGINE• Remove spark plug and pour 1 tea-

spoon of 40:1,2-cycle engine oil (aircooled) through the spark plugopening. Slowly pull the starter rope8 to 10 times to distribute oil.

• Replace spark plug with new one ofrecommended type and heat range.

• Clean air filter.• Check entire unit for loose screws,

nuts, and bolts. Replace any dam-aged, broken, or worn parts.

Se ob-tiene una proporci6n de 40:1 mezclan-do 3,2 onzas de aceite con cada gal6nde gasolina sin plomo. Se incluye conesta aparato un recipiente de 3,2 on-zas de aceite. Adiera el contenido en-tero de este recipiente en 1 gal6n degasolina para alcanzar la mezcla apro-piada del combustible. NO USE aceitepara autom6viles ni para barcas. Es-tos aceites dafiar&n el motor. AI mez-clar el combustible, siga las instruc-clones impresas en el recipiente. Unavez haya afiadido el aceite a la gasoli-na, agite al recipiente brevementepara asegurar que el combustible estecompletamente mezclado. Siemprelea y siga las instrucciones de seguri-dad que tienen que ver con el com-bustible antes de abastecer el aparato.IMPORTANTELa experiencia indica que los combus-tible mezclados con alcohol (los llama-dos gasohol o los que contienen eta-nol o metanol) pueden atraer lahumedad, Io que puede causar la se-paraci6n y la formaci6n de &cidos du-rante el almacenaje. • CAUSAS DEL REBOTE DE LACUCHILLA - El Rebote de laCuchilla puede producirse cuandola cuchilla en rotaci6n entra en con-tacto con un objeto que no puedecortar. Este contacto detiene lacuchilla durante un instante y la alejasSbitamente del objeto tocado. Lareacci6n de "rebote" puede ser Io su-ficientemente violenta para empujaral operador en cualquier direcci6n yhacer que pierda el control del apa-rato. Una vez fuera de control, elaparato puede causar lesiones gra-ves si la cuchilla entra en contactocon el operador u otras personas.

• CUANDO SE PRODUCE UN REBO-TE DE CUCHILLA - El Rebote dela Cuchilla puede ocurrir sin previoaviso siesta se cala, engancha otraba. La probabilidad de que estoocurra aumenta en las zonas donderesulta dificil ver el material a cortar.Utilizando el aparato adecuadamen-te se reduce el nSmero de rebotesde cuchilla y la probabilidad de queel operador pierda el control.

• Con la cuchilla para hierbas s61o pue-de cortarse hierba, plantas de peque-_o tama_o y brozas con tallos de ma-dera de hasta 1 cm (1/2 de pulgada)de di_.metro. No permita que lacuchilla entre en contacto con materialque no puede cortar, como tocones,piedras, vallas, metales, etc. o gruposde tallos de broza con di_.metros su-periores a 1 cm (1/2 de pulgada).

• Una cuchilla roma puede engan-charse y rebotar. Mantenga la cuchillabien afilada. Las cuchillas del re-emplazo est_.n disponibles en Sears.

• Corte solamente a plena potencia.Asi, la cuchilla dispondr_, de la mAxi-ma potencia de corte y tendr& menosposibilidades de calarse o trabarse.

• "Alimente" la cuchilla con cuidado y nodemasiado r&pidamente. La cuchillapuede rebotar si se le obliga a cortardemasiado material al mismo tiempo.

• Corte solamente de izquierda aderecha. Si se corta con la lines dellado derecho del protector, los escom-bros volar&n en sentido opuesto alusuario.

• Utilice la correa al hombro y manten-ga bien sujeto el aparato con ambasmanos. Una correa al hombro ajus-tada correctamente absorber& el pe-so del aparato, dejando libres susbrazos y manos pars controlar yguiar el movimiento de corte.

• Mantenga los pies separados cSmo-damente y bien apoyados en previ-si6n de que el aparato rebote repenti-namente. No estire el cuerpo enexceso. Mantengase firmemente enpostura erguida y equilibrada.

• Mantenga la cuchilla por debajo dela cintura; asi le resultar& m&s f&cilmantener el control del aparato.

• No levante el motor por encima de sucintura, ya que la cuchilla podria acer-carse peligrosamente a su cuerpo.

• No balancee el aparato con tal fuerzaque pueda perder el equilibrio.

Antes de penetrar en el material a cor-tar, acelere el motor hasta la velocidadde corte. Siempre que no este cortando,suelte el gatillo del acelerador y dejeque el motor regrese a la velocidad deralenti. La cuchilla no debe girar mien-tras el motor se encuentre al ralenti. AJUSTE DE LA MARCHA LENTADEL CARBURADOR

,_ADVERTENClA: Mantenga aotras personas alejadas de la zona endonde se encuentre haciendo ajustesde marcha lenta. El cabezal de corte ola cuchilla se encontrar&n girando du-rante la mayor parte de este procedi-miento. Use su equipo protector y ob-serve todas las precauciones deseguridad. Despues de finalizar con elprocedimiento de ajuste, el cabezal decorte o la cuchilla deber&n parar demoverse o de girar mientras el motorse encuentra a la velocidad de marchalenta.

El carburador ha sido ajustado cuida-dosamente en la f&brica. Posible-mente sea necesario hacer ajustes sise nota cualquiera de las siguientescondiciones:• El motor no funciona en marcha len-

ta cuando se suelta el acelerador.• El cabezal de corte o la cuchilla con-

tinuan en movimiento o girando enmarcha lenta.

Haga los ajustes sosteniendo el equipode manera que el accesorio de corte seencuentre alejado del suelo y no hagacontacto con ningt3n objeto. Sostengael aparato manualmente mientras el mo-tor se encuentre encendido y mientrasusted se encuentre haciendo losajustes. Mantenga todas las partes desu cuerpo alejadas de los accesorios decorte y del silenciador.

Los estabilizadores de combustibleson una alternativa aceptable paraminimizar la formaci6n de dep6sitosde goma durante el almacenaje.Afiada estabilizador a la gasolina en eltanque de combustible o en el reckpiente para almacenar el mismo. Sigalas instrucciones de mezcla que se en-cuentran impresas en el envase. Pon-ga el motor en marcha y dejelo enmarcha por unos 3 minutos despuesde haberle puesto estabilizador.El aceite Craftsman 40:1 para motoresa 2 tiempos (enfriados a aire) vienemezclado con estabilizador de com-bustible. Si no usa este aceite deSears, usted podr& afiadir estabiliza-dor al tanque de combustible.MOTOR• Retire la bujia y vierta una cucharad-

ita de aceite 40:1 para motores a 2tiempos (enfriados a aire) por la ab-ertura para la bujia. Lentamente, tirede la cuerda de arranque de 8 a 10veces para distribuir el aceite.

• Cambie la bujia por una nueva deltipo y de la gama de calor recomen-dados.

• Limpie el filtro de aire.• Examine todo el aparato para verificar

que no haya tornillos, tuercas ni per-nos sueltos. Cambie todas la piezasdafiadas, quebradas o gastadas.
