November 2011

Dear Members of the ICEL Community,

As I write this to you, I am shaking my head in disbelief—it’s November

already, and Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching—how can that be?!

I hope that Thanksgiving is a time when you can pause to thank God for the

many gifts in your life—family, friends, faith.

This particular Thanksgiving, my first at the University of San Francisco, I

am thankful for the Advisory Board of the Institute for Catholic Educa-

tional Leadership. We met last month, and these board members offer me

insights that guide my own administration of ICEL; what’s more, their en-

thusiasm for Catholic education and for our Institute is palpable and inspir-

ing. They have their ears to the ground and advise me on what Catholic

educational leaders need from ICEL. For this, I am most grateful.

Who is on the ICEL Advisory Board? Sharon McCarthy Allen, the principal of St. Stephen’s School

here in San Francisco; Dotty McCrea, Ed.D, principal of Mercy High School, San Francisco, and

ICEL alumna and instructor; Katie Murphy, the principal of Corpus Christi School in Piedmont;

Mike Daniels, president of De Marillac Academy in the Tenderloin, and ICEL doctoral student;

Bishop William Justice, Auxiliary Bishop, Archdiocese of San Francisco; Fr. John Koeplin, SJ, rector

of the Jesuit community at the University of San Francisco and professor in USF’s School of Man-

agement; Chris Valdez, principal of Marin Catholic High School in Kentfield, and current ICEL mas-

ter’s student; and Fr. Robert Walsh, SJ, president of St. Ignatius College Prep, San Francisco, and

ICEL alumnus.

Join me in thanking these educational leaders. Know that this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for you,

too—thankful for your membership in the ICEL community, and thankful for your contributions to

Catholic education.

God’s blessings,

Steve Katsouros, S.J.

ICEL Celebrates 35 Years at Leadership Dinner ICEL welcomed over 60 attendees to this year’s annual

leadership dinner at the Presidio Club in San Francisco on

October 18. The dinner marked a celebration of the many

leaders that have passed through ICEL’s academic

programs and a celebration of ICEL’s 35 years in serving

the Catholic educational community. The evening began

with an opening prayer by ICEL professor Gini

Shimabukuro who asked all attendees to reflect on where

they were 35 years ago; she also acknowledged that some

attendees weren’t around 35 years ago but could reflect on

what had happened in the years leading up to now.

Fr. Steve Katsouros, new director of ICEL, welcomed

attendees to the dinner and offered current statistics on

Catholic education, including statistics on successes and

recent closings. He also shared impressive statistics on the

number of ICEL alums currently serving in positions of leadership both nationally and internationally,

including principals, superintendents, presidents, trustees, headmasters, leaders in religious communities

and ministry, and directors.

Attendees also heard from current and former ICEL

students who shared their reflections and experiences during

the evening. Diana Murray, ICEL M.A. graduate and current

doctoral student, reflected on her experience as an ICEL

student and how it has shaped her and her ministry as an

educator at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, CA.

Barry Thornton, current principal at Serra High School, also

reflected on his experience as a doctoral student at ICEL and

shared his appreciation of ICEL with the community.

One of the night’s highlights came with a visit from a

representative of Assemblywoman and Speaker Pro Tempore Fiona Ma (D-CA, 12th Dis-

trict). The representative presented Fr. Steve with an Assembly Resolution congratulating

ICEL on its 35th anniversary and service to San Francisco and the educational community.

The resolution was co-sponsored by State Senator Leeland Yee (D-CA, 8th District). The official resolution will now hang in the ICEL

wing at the School of Education.

In attendance were current students, graduates, ICEL faculty and staff, faculty and leadership from USF’s School of Education , alumni,

and members of the ICEL advisory board. Attendees were treated to food, drink, fun, and conversation. The evening ended with a

beautiful closing prayer and reflection by Prof. Doreen Jones. It was a great night for the ICEL community!

Student & Alumni Updates

Christian Clifford (M.A.) is in his 15th year as an educator with the Archdiocese of San

Francisco. He is currently working at Serra High School in San Mateo. He served as a

Union leader of the San Francisco Archdiocese Federation of Teachers, Local 2240, from

2004-2011.

Eileen Emerson-Boles (Ed.D. student) returns to her doctoral studies after the birth of

her son, James Emerson-Boles.

Hannah Everhart (M.A.) is principal at Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Belmont,

California. Recently, she shared her experience of ICEL with the Monitor: “When I tell

people that I spent my summers and Saturdays during the school year taking classes at

USF, I usually get clucks of sympathy. Sometimes, for their sake, I play along and groan

about how hard it is. In reality, I looked forward to my hours in the SOE building. An ICEL class can turn any classroom

into a mini retreat from the world. In these classes, we pray together, study our past and present Catholic school system,

analyze pedagogy, and tell stories about hardships at school (always invoking the Vegas rule, mind you!). This makes us ready

to go back to our schools with hearts open to service and knowing that we have a network of understanding friends ready to

build us up when the loneliness of the job of leadership sets it. ICEL is a place of renewal that finds us at the right time in

our own lives.”

Michael Daniels (Ed.D. student and Advisory Board member) has been chosen to received the Distinguished Lasallian

Educator of the Year Award. He will be honored at the annual Huether Workshop in Washington D.C. in November. Mike

serves as the current President of DeMarillac Academy in San Francisco's Tenderloin district.

Vincent Vinod Fernandes, S.J. and Bipin Kumar Kujur, S.J. (M.A.

students) were ordained to the diaconate on October 22, 2011 at the Ca-

thedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California.

Francisco J. Grijalva (Ed. D.) is now in his 17th year as Head of School

at The Overlake School in Redmond, Washington where he established a

global service program in Cambodia. After receiving his doctorate in 1986,

Francisco served as principal at the former Saint Rose Academy in San

Francisco and as Headmaster at American International School of

Florence. He hopes to retire and return to San Francisco in 2012.

Heidi Harrison (Ed.D. student) began her work as Vice Principal for

Curriculum and Instruction at St. Justin-Siena, a Catholic school in the

Lasallian tradition, in Napa, California.

Charley Hayes (M.A. student), principal at St. Hilary School in Tiburon,

was quoted in the October 21, 2011 issue of Catholic San Francisco about

his school’s recent integration of iPads in the classroom. Hayes purchased 100 of the devices for the

school with the hope that it will make learning more effective, efficient, and engaging for the students.

Juan Montoya, S.J. (M.A. student) will be ordained to the priesthood in his hometown of Medellin, Columbia on December

7, 2011.

Sr. Delia Obenza, O.P. (M.A. student) is now principal of St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Adrian Wilson, FSC (Ed.D.) successfully defended his dissertation, Perceptions Regarding The Identity and Culture of a Lasallian

Catholic Secondary School in Australia, on October 26, 2011. Adrian is a Lasallian Christian brother from New Zealand. He will

be returning to his homeland to work for his religious community in Australia.

Eileen Emerson-Boles and her son, James.

Heidi Harrison is now Vice Principal at St. Justin-Siena in Napa, CA.

Juan Montoya, S.J. will be ordained on December 7, 2011 in Medellin, Columbia.
