ICE comes to Africa INDUSTRY professionals and key regulators from Argentina to Zimbabwe and a host of countries in between will be amongst the delegates present at the inaugural ICE Africa, Clarion Gaming’s two day conference and learning symposium being held across 24th and 25th October at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. ICE Africa will comprise an extensive learning agenda, world class training and staff development modules, products and services from leading gaming brands and extensive networking opportunities. Representatives from a total of 59 nations have registered to be part of the free to attend event, which marks the first time Clarion has extended the ICE brand beyond its London home, including a total of 21 countries from the continent of Africa. Dan Stone, Senior Marketing Manager at Clarion Gaming and one of the key figures behind the inaugural ICE Africa, praised the industry’s reaction to the first international ICE event. He announced: “The registration data so far is extremely encouraging in particular the support from African countries who have embraced the idea of ICE Africa and the potential it has for supporting the industry on the continent since day one. “We launched in Africa following requests from the industry for us to develop and organise a professional showcase that the continent could be proud of and enthusiasm from such a high calibre of delegates - including regulators, operators, manufacturers and suppliers of gaming equipment and services and investors, not only from across Africa, but internationally - the in- dustry agrees it’s time for a b2b event Africa can be proud of.” Steven Spartinos, co-founder and co-CEO of Kiron Interactive, has backed Clarion extension of the ICE brand to Africa, claiming that ICE Africa is the international B2B event to look out for in light of the continent’s sports betting, mobile and industry-wide opportunities. Discussing the benefits of having a dedicated show in Africa, Spartinos said: “It is evident that Africa is fast becoming a hub for sports betting and ICE Africa pre- sents a foundation for what has the poten- tial to become a key event in the global gambling industry. The continent can pre- sent certain challenges, one size does not necessarily fit all when it comes to the African market, however, the potential for success for sports betting is increasingly tangible. We look forward to the opportunities ICE Africa may open and are eager to be a part of the show’s development as its popularity grows.” “Africa is a highly dynamic market and having insight into virtual, mobile and sports betting components will be benefi- cial. Local understanding of what makes the punter tick in different countries is also key. Africa is a large continent with diverse tastes and needs on a country by country basis.” Supporting partners for ICE Africa in- clude, the South African Bookmakers’ Association, the Western Cape Bookmakers’ Association, the Industry Group for Responsible Gambling and the European Casino Association. - tt.

Discussing the benefits of having a

dedicated show in Africa, Spartinos said:

“It is evident that Africa is fast becoming a

hub for sports betting and ICE Africa pre-

sents a foundation for what has the poten-

gambling industry. The continent can pre-

Take note of Vaal scratchings today!

THERE have been several significant scratchings from today’s meeting on the outside track at the Vaal including the Mike de Kock runners Shufoog (Race 2) and Pietro Mascagni (Race 5), and Winter’s Forge (Race 6), which changes the play somewhat

but may just make things easier. The only runner resembling vaue is Mike Azzie’s Rock Pigeon (Race 7, 8-1), who is lightly-raced, improving and drawn on the standside fence, which may turn out to be beneficial today. Watch the earlier races for clues, the draw is not supposed to be a bias but jockeys often prefer one side at the Vaal, depending on track conditions. Value in Red. Vaal selections: Race 1: (6) Kelloholm Lad (14) Tsitsikamma Bush (7) Lithuanian’s Dream (10) Itqaan Race 2: (5) Mr Flood (4) Hakeen (2) Rule The Night (3) All About The Bass Race 3: (5) Parental Control (6) Landela (13) Over The Limit (12) Las Salina Race 4: ((7) Philos (6) Lunico (3) Eightin-theeighth (10) Zabarjad Race 5: (5) Viking Trail (3) Norland (4) Devil’s Peak (2) Lute Society Race 6: (2) Free and Easy (3) Rings And Things (6) Brave Zndaya Race 7: (7) Rock Pigeon (3) Kissmeinmydreams (8) Wrap It Up (3) Quebec Queen Race 8: (7) Virginia (11) Jose Di Nero (6) Seville Orange (2) I’m The One

THE remarkable Klawervlei Stud bred Captain Lars scored the 20th victory of his stellar career when winning a good race at Ffos Las on Monday afternoon. The evergreen nine-year-old, dispatched the 6-5 favourite, made all to win the Interbet.com Handicap over 1000m for trainer Archie Watson and rider Edward Greatrex by 2,75-lengths. In the process, Captain Lars made it win number eight for the year. Winner of the 2014 Listed Drum Star Handicap in South Africa, Captain Lars has won no fewer than 15 races since relocating to Britain and has proved a wonderful advertisement for the quality and durability of horses bred by Klawervlei. He is by Klawervlei’s late champion sire Captain Al, whose major representatives in 2017-2018 included the G1 winners Captain America, Snowdance, Tap O’ Noth and Undercover Agent –to name but a few! Captain Lars is out of the Polar Falcon mare Polar Charge, runner up in the 2000 G1 Oaks d’Italia (Italian Oaks). Polar Charge is a three-parts sister to outstanding sire Pivotal (by Polar Falcon), who was represented by his 28th individual G1 winner this year when his son Lightning Spear captured the Qatar Sussex Stakes. The regally bred Captain Lars is a full-brother to none other than Klipdrif Stud’s exciting new sire for 2018- Always In Charge. One of the Cape’s most exciting new stallions, Always In Charge was a brilliant juvenile, whose wins included the G1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion at Scottsville. The colt, who retired to stud having banked more

than R1 000 000 in prize money, went on to be named South Africa’s Equus Champion 2YO Colt of 2015-2016. - tt.

DREAM Tree, in high regard.

Uncle Mo’s Dream Tree looks special

SENSATIONAL sire Uncle Mo looks to have a potential superstar on his hands in the form of Dream Tree. The latter made it five wins from five outings when defying a nearly seven month layoff to capture the G2 Prioress Stakes at Saratoga on Sunday. A 3yo filly trained by Bob Baffert, Dream Tree powered away to win by 4 1/4 lengths over slight favorite Mia Mischief.

“She brought it today,” said winning trainer Bob Baf-

fert. "She had been training so well, and we were debating on running her in a stakes on closing day or take her to Saratoga. We decided to give her a shot since she was doing so well. I'm just glad she shipped well and is still undefeated. That freshen-ing really helped her. She's really matured a lot. She showed today how good she really is." Winner of the G1 Starlet Stakes at two, Dream Tree has now three graded wins (and four stakes wins in total) to her name, having won the G2 Las Virgenes Stakes by 3.75 lengths at her previous outing. Dream Tree is one of six US graded stakes winners representing Uncle Mo this season. Others include the now retired G1 Apple Blossom Handicap winner Unbridled Mo, La Canada Stakes heroine Mopotism, and multiple graded winner Ultra Brat. Uncle Mo, who stood for a fee of $125 000 (or more than R1.8 million in 2018,) is one of North America’s Leading Sires by Average Earnings Index (AEI) and is currently higher on that list than such major stallions as Distorted Humor, Speightstown, Kitten’s Joy, Malibu Moon and More Than Ready.

Klawervlei Stud’s well performed young stallion Royal Mo is the only son of this exceptional young sire at stud in South Africa. One of the best horses of his generation, Royal Mo scored his signature win in the G3 Robert B. Lewis

Stakes, a race won previously by such outstanding performers as I’ll Have Another, Artax and Horse Of The Year Ferdinand , as well as top class stallion Pioneerof The Nile. - tt.

Youngster comes through

FORMER UK champion jockey Kieren Fallon is very proud of his son Cieren, who rode in his first race at Thirsk Racecourse last weekend and finished second.

Old-timers once were youngsters

ON 27 August 1990, young Frankie Dettori became the first teenager since Lester Piggott to ride 100 winners in a season when he and Line Of Thunder took a 1400m handicap for trainer Luca Cumani.
