Overview

Sheep and goat sector has contributed Rs. 66,814 crore to the gross domestic produce of India in 2017-18 and has the potential to contribute over Rs. 1,50,000 crore. India has 44 registered sheep and 34 registered goat breeds and holds 3rd and 2nd position in the world for sheep (74.26 million) and goat (148.88 million) population in the year 2019-20 producing 0.678 and 1.097 million tons of meat, respectively. Development of the goat sector has the potential to impact the livelihoods of 20 million goat rearers (NSSO, 2013) belonging to resource poor and socially backward segments of the society living in ecologically vulnerable areas. Inspite of huge contribution in terms of economy, livelihood and nutritional security the sheep and goat sector is still unorganized with several gaps along the supply chain including lack of meat breeds, animal marketing, transportation, hygienic slaughter, waste management, processing, cold-chain and modern retailing facilities. Even though, in the recent years the retail landscape has been changed due to the entry of e-commerce platforms, the slaughter and processing of sheep and goat remained unorganized. Lack of policy interventions, complexities involved with different approvals, absence of funding/schemes to support meat sector activities, lack of interest among start-ups or entrepreneurs in slaughtering activities have resulted in failure to link farmers to market. However, sheep and goat sector can come-up similar to poultry sector and can contribute signicantly to livestock sector output with proper interventions. ICAR-National Research Centre on Meat, Hyderabad in collaboration with ICAR-National Academy of Agricultural Research & Management (NAARM) and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), Hyderabad Chapter & Indian Meat Science Association (IMSA) propose to bring together progressive sheep and goat farmers, sheep and goat development boards of different states, animal husbandry departments, exporters, NGO’s working in sheep and goat sector, regulators, policy makers, bankers, entrepreneurs, e-commerce business ventures, veterinarians and students to develop a roadmap to bridge the gaps in sheep and goat supply chain/value chain.
