40 Chapter 2 Reinstalling the IC-301 Print Controller Software

    2.1 Overview

This chapter describes when and how to back up and restore the entireoperating system and software (including the current job list database) on

your computer, as well as when and how to reinstall the softwareconfiguration on your IC-301 print controller.

Backing up the software on a regular basis (weekly) is alwaysrecommended so that a working copy can be used for recovery, ifnecessary. Performing the restore procedure requires a previous backup. To ensure a successful recovery:

Save a copy of the backup, either on the network or on an externaldevice to prevent loss of data in case your system disk becomescorrupted.

Perform the backup and recovery procedure at any time that you wantto back up and restore the ColorServer system partition and the job listdatabase.

Windows XP activation is not required.

    To reinstall the software configuration:

Perform either a complete overwrite of the entire system or only asystem partition.

When you reinstall the software configuration using either of the twomethods, your current job list database will be deleted.

    Both of these methods require:

Reinstalling the operating system (Windows XP)

    Reinstalling the ColorServer software

Using the Configuration Wizard to configure the system.

    Activating Windows XP

Backing up the ColorServer system partition at the end of thereinstallation process.

    The Gigabit Ethernet Controller

The Ethernet controller is integrated on the system board. It provides an interface for connecting to a 10-Mbps, 100-Mbps, or

1000-Mbps network and provides full duplex (FDX) capability, whichenables simultaneous transmission and reception of data on thenetwork.

If the Ethernet port in the server supports auto-negotiation, thecontroller detects the data-transfer rate of the network (10BASE-T,100BASE-TX, or 1000BASE-T) and automatically operates at that rate,in full-duplex or half-duplex mode, as appropriate.

The Ethernet controller supports optional modes, such as teaming, priority packets, load balancing, fault tolerance, and virtual LANs,

which provide better performance, security, and throughput. Thesemodes apply to the integrated Ethernet controller and to controllers onsupported Ethernet adapters.

    Troubleshooting the Ethernet Controller

This section provides troubleshooting information for problems thatmight occur with the 10/100/1000-Mbps Ethernet controller.

    To resolve network connection problems:

If the Ethernet controller cannot connect to the network, perform thefollowing:

Check the BIOS configuration relating to the LAN.

Verify that the cable from the LAN connector on the server isconnected to the LAN connector on the printer.

Check that the network cable is attached at all connections. If the cableis attached but the problem persists, try a different cable.

Check the LAN activity light on the rear of the IC-301 print controller. The LAN activity light illuminates when the Ethernet controller sendsor receives data over the Ethernet network. If the LAN activity light isoff, ensure that the hub and network are operating and that the correctdevice drivers are loaded.

    3.2 General Diagnostic Tools

The following tools are available to help you identify and resolvehardware-related issues:

    PC health monitoring

POST (Power-On Self-Test) beep codes, error messages, and errorlogsPOST generates beep codes and messages to indicate successfultest completion or the detection of a problem.

    3.2.1 PC Health Monitoring

This section describes the PC health monitoring features of the systemboard. The system board has an onboard system hardware monitor chipthat supports PC health monitoring.

An onboard voltage monitor will scan these voltages continuously. Once avoltage becomes unstable, a warning is raised or an error message is sent tothe screen. Users can adjust the voltage thresholds to define the sensitivityof the voltage monitor. To adjust the sensitivity, open the BIOS utility andselect Advanced > Hardware Monitor.

Fan Status Monitor with Firmware/Software On/Off Control

The PC health monitor can check the RPM status of the cooling fans. Theonboard 3-pin CPU and chassis fans are controlled by the powermanagement functions. The thermal fan is controlled by the overheatdetection logic.

    Environmental Temperature Control

The system board has a CPU thermal trip feature. A thermal control sensormonitors the CPU temperature in real time and will send a signal to shutdown the system whenever the CPU temperature exceeds a certainthreshold. This works to protect the CPU from being damaged byoverheating.

For more information, seePOST (Power On Self Test)on page 83.
