§ Ac.ve/Ac.ve Unified Namespace across all file modules § IBM Ac.ve Cloud Engine™ technology delivers automated storage efficiency capabili.es – True policy-‐based management of files – With user-‐defined policies!
§ Based on highly successful Storwize V7000 block storage system § Fully integrated user interface for block and file data simplifies management
– Not a “unified” launcher for two different interfaces § Simple USB key based ini.al setup
– Extends successful Storwize V7000 approach § Built-‐in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client simplifies
– backup to TSM server – and Hierarchical Storage Management to tape or virtual tape library with dedu-‐plica.on – System also supports NDMP for third-‐party backup clients

© 2012 IBM Corpora.on Terminology
§ A File is made up of metadata and data
§ A Fileset is a logical sub-‐tree of a file system – Provides more granularity, flexibility and manageability for features
such as Quota management, Snapshots, Policies, etc. – In many respects behaves like an independent file system
§ A File System is created using Network Shared Disk (a LUN) from 1 or more storage pools
§ A Storage pool is a group of NSDs within a file system
§ A Network Shared Disk (NSD) a Logical Unit Number (LUN) assigned to a number of File Modules
14
© 2012 IBM Corpora.on Storage Pools
§ Storage pools are a collec.on of resources allowing you to group mul.ple Network Shared Disks (NSD) & mul.ple storage subsystems into a single file system
§ Storage pools allow you to perform complex opera.ons such as moving, mirroring, or dele.ng files across mul.ple storage devices, providing storage virtualiza.on and a single management context
§ Storage pools provide you with a method to par..on file system storage for considera.ons such as – Improved price-‐performance by matching the cost of storage to the value of the data
– Improved performance by • Reducing the conten.on for premium storage
• Reducing the impact of slower devices • Allowing you to retrieve archived data when needed
– Improved reliability by providing for • Replica.on based on need • BeTer failure containment
• Crea.on of new storage pools as needed
15
© 2012 IBM Corpora.on Storage Pools (cont.)
There are 2 types of storage pools § Internal Storage Pools
– Meant for managing online storage resources – Maximum of 8 internal storage pools per file system
• 7 are available as op.onal user pools • 1 is required required as the system storage pool
– The Ac.ve Cloud Engine assigns file data to internal storage pools under these circumstances • During file crea.on the storage pool is determined by ACE’s the file placement policy
• ATributes of the file, such as file size or access .me, match the rules of a policy that directs the file to be migrated to a different storage pool
§ External Storage Pools – Intended for use as near-‐line storage, archival and/or backup opera.ons – Requires the use of a external storage management applica.on such as TSM – TSM/HSM is responsible for moving files on & off Internal Storage Pools from GPFS ● Files are recalled from the Library Manager upon the request of an applica.on opening it
© 2012 IBM Corpora.on Logical Structure of a File System
17
§ Up to 256 File Systems per Storwize V7000 Unified cluster
§ Max. 8PB per file system
§ Up to 3,000* filesets per File System
§ Up to 65,536 (216) sub-‐directories per directory
§ Up to 263 files per file system (4,294,967,296 = 232 currently tested)
§ File aTributes include folder name → File data can be moved to different storage pools
within the file system
File System
File Sets
Folders (*) Up to 3,000 dependent and 1,000 independent filesets: • An independent file set has a separate inode space, but shares physical storage with the remainder of the file system • A dependent file set shares the inode space, quota limits and snapshot capability of the containing independent file set

18
Automa=c Tiered Storage
§ Informa9on Lifecycle Management means Tiering between internal Disk Pools
§ Hierarchical Storage Management means Tiering with external storage pool (usually tape) with file pointer leD in the File System
§ At mul.ple levels – Storage Pool level (A group of LUNs) – Fileset level (Define sub-‐trees of a File-‐System)
§ Using Policies for rule based management of files – Placement – Migra.on – Dele.on – Exclusion
§ Delivering – Scalability è billions of files – One global File-‐System name space across independent storage pools – Hierarchical storage based on files ● Files in the same directory can be in different pools ● Files placed in storage pools at create .me using policies ● Files moved between pools via automated policy-‐driven .ered storage
– Hierarchical to both disk & tape – Allows classifica.on of data according to Service Level Agreements

© 2012 IBM Corpora.on Base Configura=on
§ 6 up to 24 RU solu.on – When clustering mul.ple Storwize V7000 storage modules via a redundant SAN fabric
(via FCP or FCoE), we are be able to scale up to 84 RU (+ SAN connec.vity)
§ File modules are provided in a pair (cluster) § Same code as SONAS
– Storwize V7000U is like a SONAS appliance’s storage pod with Storwize V7000 control enclosure as a back-‐end storage subsystem, and the interface/management nodes embedded in the storage nodes
§ Each file module has all func.ons – Management node è a node is ac.ve while the other is
standby
– Interface node è both nodes are ac.ve – Storage node è both nodes are ac.ve and directly aTached to Storwize V7000
§ Direct redundant LAN connec.vity between both file modules
20
© 2012 IBM Corpora.on Full Configura=on & Scalability
§ Storwize V7000 Unified (Up to 84 Rack Units) – 2 File Modules – 4 Storage Modules – 960 internal hard disk drives (SSD, SAS & NL-‐SAS)
§ SONAS appliance (Up to 17 racks) – 30 Storage Nodes – 60 Interface Nodes – 7,200 internal hard disk drives (SAS & NL-‐SAS)
§ SONAS gateway (1 base rack + Disk Subsystems) – 10 Storage Nodes – 8 Interface Nodes – 10 XIV or SAN Volume Controller or Storwize V7000
§ GPFS – Max. Design Capacity: 134,217,728 Yobibytes (2107 Bytes) – Max. file size equals file system size – Up to 256 file systems per cluster – Up to 9,223,372,036,854,780,000 files (263) per file system – Up to 8192 nodes 21
(*) CIFS not supported with external virtualised capacity
è Far from using the full scalability of either SONAS or GPFS

Storage Pools
ACE provides ILM & HSM tools to define file level policies that determine where the data is physically stored to match the cost of your storage resources to the value of your data regardless of its placement in the logical directory structure
§ File placement policies determine which storage pool files are ini.ally placed in § File placement rules are determined by aTributes known when a file is created such as file name,
user name, group name or the fileset § Once files exist in a file system, file management policies allow you to move, mirror or delete files § You can use file management policies to move data from one pool to another without changing the
files loca.on in the directory structure
Ac=ve Cloud Engine tools for ILM & HSM
§ A fileset is a logical subtree of the file system namespace and provides a way to par..on the namespace into smaller, more manageable units
§ Mul.ple levels of rules can be applied because the complete policy rule set is evaluated for each file when the policy engine executes
§ Storage pools allow you to group mul.ple physical storage devices within a file system (SSD, SAS, Fibre Channel, NL-‐SAS, SATA, etc.)
