IBM & Cisco collaboration takes the power of IoT to the edge of computer networks

What we announced: Why this matters:

• IBM and Cisco are combining the power of IBM’sWatson IoT and business analytics technologiesand Cisco’s edge analytics capabilities to moredeeply understand and act on critical data on thenetwork edge. The new global collaboration istargeting companies operating on the edge ofcomputer networks such as oil rigs, factories, shipping companies and mines, where time is ofthe essence but bandwidth is often lacking.

• This new approach enables businesses inremote and autonomous locations to bettermonitor the health and behavior of criticalmachinery (e.g. equipment data on temperature, pressures, flow rate and speed) and moreaccurately plan for needed maintenance orequipment upgrades.

• Data collected will be instantly measured againstbusiness rules at the point of collection, eliminating the time and costs associated withtransmitting device data across a distributednetwork.

• By tapping into the power of the IBM Watson IoTPlatform and Cisco’s edge analytics, companiescan adopt the latest approaches to condition-based maintenance through which equipment ismonitored in real time, helping reduce cost by upto 25% and eliminating up to 70% of equipmentbreakdowns.

IBM and Cisco are helping organizations make real-time informed decisions based on business-critical data that was previously undetected and overlooked.

Customers already benefitting from this technology include:

Bell Canada, Canada's largest telecommunications company, is delivering IBM Watson IoT & Cisco Edge over Canada’s largest & fastest 4G LTE network, enabling organizations in transportation & fleet management, food safety, oil & gas, mining & materials and more to collect data in real time no matter where they are.

Port of Cartagena in Colombia is tapping into analytics on the edge of the network to spot patterns in data flowing from industrial cranes, heavy-duty trucks & trains, including vibrations, temperature & speeds. The Watson IoT Platform with edge analytics is helping the Port to get ahead of needed maintenance and equipment degradation.

SilverHook Powerboats, a high speed racing watercraft designer, is tapping into Cisco edge analytics & Watson IoT business analytics to help boat racers react immediately to environment & engine conditions in real-time, optimizing performance.

• Today, billions of interconnected devices andsensors are gathering vast amounts of real-time data. Cloud computing has offeredcompanies a powerful way of storing that data, turning it into valuable insight, but forbusinesses without easy access to highbandwidth connectivity, these capabilities aresometimes out of reach or take too long.

• Industrial Worksites operate expensivemachines based in remote locations and mustbe continuously available--businesses cannotafford issues like unscheduled maintenance, which can be costly and is often not coveredby warranty or insurance. In addition, there is ahigh cost associated with data transmissionand storage and potential security concerns.

• According to McKinsey, IoT in the worksitessetting can have an economic impact of $160billion to $930 billion per year in 2025, and canhelp industrial organizations achieve up to$800 billion in performance improvementsand avoid downtime.
