+What is IBM Watson? Watson has come a long way since it won on the American quiz show Jeopardy! in 2011. Back then, it did one thing: natural language Q&A, powered by five technologies. Today, Q&A is just one of more than 30 Watson capabilities— all of which have been turned into digital services, or application programming interfaces (APIs), delivered via the cloud. This means that we can literally build cognition into everything digital. With Watson, every digital application, product and process can understand, reason and learn. You can see why cognitive is becoming the heart of IBM’s solutions businesses. What started as one Watson unit is now a growing family: the core Watson team, which continues to build new capabilities and nurture its expanding ecosystem; and individual Watson businesses, aimed at particular industries or professional domains, such as IBM Watson Health and IBM Watson Internet of Things. Each business brings together Watson capabilities with industry expertise, vast data sets and an ecosystem of partners and clients, and each is powered by the IBM Cloud. + What is IBM Watson cont.? Watson is needed, said IBM executives, because the sheer volume of information is outstripping the ability of humans to consume and make sense of what's available. The problem is particularly acute for doctors, lawyers, financial advisors, oil and gas explorers, IT and telecommunications engineers, and other professionals who struggle to keep up with constantly evolving industry knowledge. The info glut will only be compounded as sensor-based, Internet-of-Things-style apps produce yet more data.

Watson's calling is consuming and finding connections in vast stores of information so it can help people quickly make better decisions. That's happening in healthcare, life sciences, financial services, retail, and other domains.

+ IoT Predictions IDC - IDC predicts that by 2020, 50% of all business analytics software will include

prescriptive analytics built on cognitive computing functionality and that Cognitive Services will be embedded in new apps. Embedded data analytics will provide U.S. enterprises $60+ billion in annual savings by 2020.

IIA - IIA predicts that automated data curation and management will free up analysts and data scientists to do more of the work they want to do.

Forrester - Forrester says that in 2016, machine learning will begin to replace manual data wrangling and data governance dirty work, and vendors will market these solutions as a way to make data ingestion, preparation, and discovery quicker.

IDC - Through 2020, according to IDC, spending on self-service visual discovery and data preparation tools will grow 2.5x faster than traditional IT-controlled tools for similar functionality.

Gartner - Gartner predicts that due to the volume and variety of data and the sophistication of advanced analytics capabilities, the risks associated with big data analytics projects will continue to be larger than those associated with typical IT projects. In addition, by 2018, 50% of business ethics violations will occur through improper use of big data analytics.

Forrester - Forrester also warns that immature data science teams will improperly exploit algorithm markets, and spend precious time either developing an algorithm they could have bought or trying to apply an algorithm incorrectly.

+ IoT Predictions - cont. IIA - Cognitive technology will become the follow-on to automated analytics, predicts

IIA. For many enterprises, the association between cognitive computing and analytics will solidify in much the same way that businesses now see similarities between analytics and big data. IIA adds to the mix yet another term, predicting also that data science and predictive/prescriptive analytics will become one and the same.

IDC - By 2020, IDC predicts, data monetization efforts will result in enterprises increasing the marketplace’s consumption of their own data by 100-fold or more. Also by 2020, the amount of data that is worth analyzing will double. Forrester predicts that as firms will try to sell their data, “many will sputter.” In 2016, an increasing number of firms will look to drive value and revenue from their “data exhaust.” Only 10% of enterprises took their data to market in 2014, but 30% reported data commercialization efforts in 2015, a 200% increase.

Forrester - Forrester declares that “all companies are in the data business now.”  IDC predicts that by 2020, organizations able to analyze all relevant data and deliver actionable information will achieve an extra $430 billion in productivity benefits over their less analytically oriented peers.

+ Customer Successes cont. Customer ANZ Bank is poised to roll out a Watson Engagement Advisor

application in store-front "Grow" centers in Australia and New Zealand where customers can seek advice on insurance, investment, and retirement products. Watson will serve in a self-service role, in direct interaction with customers, and in an advisory role, helping ANZ financial advisors to deliver personalized advice. In either case there's input from customers, with particulars gathered about their age, life circumstances, income, and financial situation. Watson's task is to appropriately connect that with a vast array of insurance and other financial products and deliver concise, high-confidence, personalized recommendations -- rather than a dumb, endless list of search results.

ANZ's deployment is an on-premises equivalent of USAA web- and call-center deployment in which Watson is advising retiring military personnel on an array of topics including education, health insurance, housing, and retirement decisions. The eight-month deployment required extensive training on USAA internal documents as well as external content from the Veterans Administration and the Department of Defense.

IBM Annual Report Summary

Cognitive Computing"Now, in 2016, we have reached a new stage in our transformation. As important as “becoming digital” is to our clients, it has become clear that it is not the destination. Rather, digital business is converging with a new kind of digital intelligence—what you will recognize as Watson. We call this Cognitive Business."

Watson Internet of Things"Watson unit is now a growing family: the core Watson team, which continues to build new capabilities and nurture its expanding ecosystem; and individual Watson businesses, aimed at particular industries or professional domains, such as IBM Watson Health and IBM Watson Internet of Things. Each business brings together Watson capabilities with industry expertise, vast data sets and an ecosystem of partners and clients, and each is powered by the IBM Cloud."

Watson Health "In IBM Watson Health, for example, our partners include Medtronic, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the New York Genome Center and CVS Health. We have enhanced our capabilities in healthcare with expertise and data sets acquired through population health management leader Phytel, health data analytics provider Explorys and medical images firm Merge Healthcare. In February 2016 we announced our intention to acquire Truven Health Analytics, a leading provider of cloud-based healthcare data, analytics and insights."

19

+Strategic Imperatives

Within the IT industry, there are major shifts occurring—driven by data and analytics, cloud and changes in the ways individuals and enterprises are engaging. In 2015, IBM had continued strong performance in its strategic imperatives that are focused on these market shifts. The company’s cloud, analytics, mobile, social and security solutions together generated $29 billion in revenue, which is approximately 35 percent of total consolidated revenue.

20

+ Software to Cloud

IBM Global Business Services (GBS) continues its transition, with strong growth in strategic imperatives offset by declines in the more traditional areas. The company will continue to engineer this shift. The company expects a continued impact to its software transaction revenue growth, as many of its largest customers continue to utilize the flexibility that the company has provided, as they commit to the company’s platform for the longer term. In addition, while the company is fully participating in the shift to cloud, the margins in that business are impacted by the level of investment the company is making, and the fact that the business is not yet at scale.

+ Competitive Perspectives IBM’s Watson has many competitors, all of

which offer some, but not all, of the capabilities provided across the Watson Eco-system.

If you look at the competition then Google, Amazon and Microsoft are the obvious players to look at but there are many companies large and small who are working in particular spaces without the breadth of capabilities seen in the Watson ecosystem who you would class as competitors in particular spaces.

Indeed many of the competitors are partners and customers of IBM including most of those mentioned above. (Accenture and Deloitte being two in the services consulting world that IBM operates within).

+IBM CICS

CICS is a mixed language application servers that provide industrial-strength, online transaction management and connectivity for mission-critical applications

Now, IBM is capitalizing on the growing need for powerful and flexible servers to host e-commerce systems to drive the demand for CICS, said Rob Lamb, CICS business executive at IBM's Hursley Park laboratories in England. "We're seeing increasing usage of CICS among existing customers. The price [of mainframe technology] has come down, so vs. Unix and other technologies mainframe systems are more price competitive," Lamb said.

Natural Language InterfaceNatural-language interface

That means getting back to the original interface: language. We already control our phones and homes with voice-activated devices. Now we need the intra-device networks to understand those commands across the network. IBM has started showing how business meetings powered with Watson intelligence automate all of the (monotonous) followups like notes and the scheduling of future discussions. Connected devices –– smart whiteboards, smartphones, email servers –– need to understand what each other and the humans are trying to accomplish.

"You need to change the whole human-device interface.” Says Christophe Begue, Director, Electronics Industry, IBM Americas. "This isn't just natural language interaction but the ability to reason and change the outcome and learn over time."

IoT Consumer Devices

Scott Burnett, IBM's managing director of consumer electronics, says we've reached a point with technology of thinking past devices as small engines or data-query tools. Instead we should view them as nodes in one vast network that collectively enable each other to streamline your life. "They're not just my concierge, but my agents," he says. Integrating data across all our devices finally unleashes the genie from the digital bottle. "We're at the 'Your wish is my command' phase," he says.

Every day, thousands more devices come online in the growing trillion-dollar Internet of Things market, a global ecosystem of connected devices. According to a recent IBM study, 91 percent of electronics business leaders said IoT would reshape their brand identity. IBM Watson has long powered each corner of IoT's underlying intelligence in enterprise and industrial settings, optimizing everything from a skyscraper's heating and cooling system to day-to-day operations of a coffee chain

Tokyo, Japan & Armonk, N.Y. - 17 Mar 2016: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that Honda R&D is monitoring and analyzing data from more than 160 sensors in Formula One (F1) cars using IBM Watson Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Now, drivers and crews can apply data and analytics in real-time to help streamline performance and improve fuel efficiency, enabling drivers to make real-time racing decisions based on this data, such as speed adjustments and pit stops.

IBM Watson Health, Blockchain Technology and Healthcare Data

ARMONK, NY - 11 Jan 2017: IBM Watson Health (NYSE: IBM) has signed a research initiative with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) aimed at defining a secure, efficient and scalable exchange of health data using blockchain technology. IBM and the FDA will explore the exchange of owner mediated data from several sources, such as Electronic Medical Records, clinical trials, genomic data, and health data from mobile devices, wearables and the “Internet of Things.” The initial focus will be on oncology-related data.

A recent IBM Institute for Business Value paper ‘Healthcare rallies for blockchains[1]’, based on a survey of about 200 healthcare executives, found that more than seven in ten industry leaders anticipate the highest benefits of blockchain in healthcare to accrue to managing clinical trial records, regulatory compliance and medical/health records.

“The healthcare industry is undergoing significant changes due to the vast amounts of disparate data being generated. Blockchain technology provides a highly secure, decentralized framework for data sharing that will accelerate innovation throughout the industry,” said Shahram Ebadollahi, Vice President for Innovations and Chief Science Officer, IBM Watson Health. http://

Imagining the Cognitive Car Sebastian Wedeniwski, IBM Distinguished Engineer and CTO of its automotive division, runs a team that works with electronics brands such as Panasonic, and with top carmakers such as BMW, to build the underpinning software for those vehicles by 2025. They’re tackling some of these big questions of interaction. But, he points out, “Many people wonder why their car isn't a smartphone experience.” Panasonic Silicon Valley Center’s Strategy & Innovation Executive Director Hakan Kostepen adds “This is all about ‘Cognitive Life’ coming together with Panasonic Edge Device Intelligence imbued with IBM Watson Pervasive – Cloud Intelligence to create cognitive experiences across all verticals where IBM and Panasonic are active from Connected Cars to Smart City Solutions.”

“In a future where vehicles communicate with traffic hubs, satellites, applications, other cars, your home, your office and all the points in between, our vehicles will require an on-board intelligence engine—such as IBM Watson—that can sort, direct, and personalize all that information to serve human needs. That’s when cognition becomes even more critical. Today, the driver's first priority is to drive — keep their focus on the road. IBM has been partnering with electronics veterans such as Panasonic to ensure that next-generation dashboard features and functions are seamless, so drivers always operate with the highest levels of safety.” Said Wedeniwskihttp://www.ibm.com/internet-of-things/iot-solu

IBM Watson Health and the Cleveland Clinic

Cleveland Clinic and IBM have a five-year agreement to expand the Clinic’s health information technology capabilities.  The Clinic and IBM aim to establish a model for a health system transition to value-based care and population health, and to uncover potential standards that could be replicated by providers nationwide. The agreement builds on a decades-long relationship between the two organizations, and reflects the parties' intention to expand the use of IBMs secured cloud, social, mobile and Watson cognitive computing technologies across clinical and administrative operations.  The collaboration is also being designed to better capture the value of data and to enhance patient care across the systems’ nine regional hospitals and 18 full-service family health centers.

“For the past five years, Cleveland Clinic has been central to IBM’s effort to build Watson’s cognitive capabilities in healthcare," said Deborah DiSanzo, general manager of IBM Watson Health. "Together, we will bring cognitive computing and an entire portfolio of IBM technology offerings to transform clinical care and administrative operations across the Cleveland Clinic, and help its renowned care providers deliver evidence-based, personalized and cognitive care to the individual patients they serve and the populations they manage.”
