5 – PARTICIPATION RIGHTS AND RULES
5.1 - Riders
For British riders: Each rider needs to be a member of the Iberian Dressage Masters (MCI GB)
to qualify for the European Masters final. A rider can ride in the contest with as many different
horses as he/she wishes. Each combination will count as a new competitor.
MCI GB circuit is open to participation by foreign MCI competitors. Whatever the nationality,
foreign competitors will have to qualify under the same rules and regulations as British
competitors to obtain qualification, if qualifying for the European Masters final, they can either
compete as an individual or for their National team.
5.2 – Horses
The Iberian Dressage Masters (MCI GB) is open to all Purebred horses with full papers:
Pura Raza Espaňola (PRE) or Purebred Lusitanos (PSL) with a current vaccination
certificate. Veterinary checks and controls such as microchip scanning will be performed onsite
by the Veterinary Surgeon for the Finals. Part-breds are allowed to compete but are not allowed
to be ranked or to qualify for the European Masters Final under the rules of the MCI of France.
Minimum age for competing = 4 years (as of 1st January of their 4th year).
From 1st January 2003, the identification of all horses residing in Great Britain is mandatory.
Horses participating in an MCI competition, event or official competition must be microchipped;
the main objective of identification by microchip is to guard against theft of horses.

6 – COSTS OF MEMBERSHIP AND ENTRIES FOR EACH TEST
Membership to the Iberian Dressage Masters (MCI GB) for 2016 will be renewed on the 1st
January of each year.
Annual membership fees are available on the website.
Entry and stabling fees will vary depending on each competition and will be advised at the time
of entry.
7 – JUDGES
The Judges for MCI GB Qualifiers will be British Dressage Listed Judges appropriate to the
level, independent of the MCI. Each test will be marked by the Judge according to FEI
guidelines and their decision is final.
The method of judging for the young horse tests PRIMERA and NOVILLA will be judged in the
same way as all FEI Young Horse classes. The judging will be based on FEI Young Horse
classes: walk, trot, canter, flexibility, suppleness and general impression and not on the
execution of each movement.
Judges may appeal to members of the Committee of MCI GB only to help solve a problem of
regulation or technique. The grading and marking decided by the judges is final and each
competitor will receive their awarded score which will go towards their qualification for the
European Masters final.
8 – REGISTERING AND ENTERING A CLASS
When making your entries you must ensure that both the rider and the horse are members of
the IDM (MCI GB). All entries are made directly to each qualifying venue. A photocopy of the
horse’s passport may be requested, this will be retained by the MCI GB office. If applicable, any
horse whose origins have not been confirmed before the beginning of the test will unfortunately
not be allowed to start. The MCI GB maintains a register for all riders and horses.
Entries should be made directly with each venue by post or by email. All entries must be
received by the closing date. Late entries or entries on the day may be accepted at the
organiser’s discretion.
Closing date/s are variable depending on the venue. For the European Masters final, the closing
date will be fixed at the earliest at midnight on the Monday 15 days before the start of the
competition or at the latest at midnight on the Friday 8 days before the start of the competition.
Check the Calendar on our website for latest news.
-
7
Entry fees for the European Final for each competitor are payable either directly to the venue or
to the “Iberian Dressage Masters” no later than 8 days before the beginning of the first round of
the competition. Note: Only Entry and stable fees received by the due date will be taken into
consideration unless otherwise stated on the website Calendar under late entries.
All Junior riders participating in MCI GB competitions must have written permission from their
parents or legal guardian valid for the duration of the competition season.
A competitor may participate in the qualifying rounds, as many times as he/she wishes; subject
to the following points in each test organized by the MCI GB:
a) A horse shall not participate in more than 3 tests in any one day, even with different riders
b) A horse can compete a maximum of twice in the same test on the same day
c) A rider can compete up to 3 different horses in the same test on the same day
d) A competitor (horse/rider combination) may compete only once in the same test on the same

version of the Iberian Dressage Masters (MCI GB) rules being printed. The FEI rules will always
prevail.
Dress for Riders:
Spanish or Portuguese traditional dress is recommended but the classical FEI or English dress
is accepted.

Riding Helmets & hats:
Protective hats are to be worn by all riders at all times when mounted at an MCI GB
competition, including exercising, warming up and competing. Top hats or uniform caps are
permitted as an exception to this rule for all MCI tests (excluding Young Horse tests where a
protective hat should be worn) but only for the warm up directly prior to the competition (which
may include riding from horse box park/stable to warm up arena) and the test. It is, however,
recommended that riders to whom this exception applies wear protective hats at all times for
their own safety. Organisers may require that Under 21 riders are to wear protective hats at all
levels, if this is stipulated in the schedule. Organisers may also prescribe venue-specific rules
that are stricter than stated if clearly shown in their schedules.
Protective hats must meet one of the following standards; PAS 015, EN1384, BSEN1384 (MCI
GB strongly recommends that hats are BSI Kitemarked) ASTM F1163 (2004) with SEI mark
SNELL E2001 Australian & New Zealand All AS/NZS 3838 1998 or any new standard that
meets or exceeds those stated. Harnesses must be correctly fastened at all times when
mounted. Hats and hat covers must be predominately black, navy blue or a conservative dark
colour that matches the rider’s jacket. Competitors are strongly recommended to check their
hats are correctly fitted and replace them if damaged, or following a fall, and are responsible for
ensuring their hat meets the required standards above. Riders are also advised to check the
wording of any insurance policy they may depend on in case of accident for any specific
requirements regarding the wearing of hats.
If a hat comes off during a dressage test, it must be replaced immediately; the rider may
dismount or the hat may be handed to them. The test will be restarted at the beginning of the
movement during which it came off. There will be no penalty for error of course, but if the hat is
not replaced the Judge is to eliminate the competitor. If a rider starts their test without wearing
the correct headgear, the Judge is to ring the bell and instruct the rider to dismount and leave
the arena. At the discretion of the organiser and the Judge, the rider may restart the test once
properly attired. If a rider fails to comply with the instruction, the organiser is to eliminate the
competitor from all classes on that day. This will also apply if, as a result of a spotcheck, a
rider’s hat is found not to comply with the required standard.
The standard riding helmet is accepted with the Iberian outfit and wearing it will not interfere
with the points for Freestyle.
Any Rider in default may be disqualified without refund of their registration or entry fees.

11.2 Points and Ranking:
The minimum and maximum number of points that can be achieved are as follows:
Final scores:
Less than or equal to 55.000% score = 0 points
More than 75.001% = 81 points
-
14
11.2.1 Extra Points accumulated for Participation and Traditional Dress
Every competitor will receive an extra 2 points for participating in each test, this will be equally
allocated to the competitors whatever their score. This includes competitors who have been
eliminated or have to retire.
These 2 points are then doubled for competitors competing in traditional Spanish or
Portuguese costume. To clarify: 2 points for participation + 2 points for Traditional Dress =
4 extra points per dressage test.
11.3 Accumulated points in the qualification rounds for provisional rankings.
This will be calculated from the percentage marks received on the day transferred into points
plus taking into account the extra points earned by each competitor during each test.
Total Masters points equals the combination of all points for the selected test (eg
Malaga). The best three scores for that particular test achieved during the qualifying
season will be attributed to this horse and rider combination for ranking purposes.
A competitor may therefore participate in as many tests of the MCI GB as they wish, all these
points (including extra points for dress and participation) will be taken into account in the total
Masters points and only the 3 (three) best scores (results) will be retained for the records for the
final Masters points.

Points accumulated by a competitor for a particular test may in no circumstances be transferred,
sold or combined with any other test for that competitor and or another competitor in trying to
obtain a place at the European Masters (final).
MCI GB reserves the right to disqualify any competitor who makes false statements with regard
to the origins of the horse. Points derived by the competitor will be cancelled and a new
provisional ranking will be given. A competitor is no longer entitled to participate in any
competition and their accumulated points will be forfeited.

13 – SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE EUROPEAN MASTERS (FINAL)
To be selected and to qualify for the European Masters (final), each competitor must obtain 3
qualifying scores at different shows before the end of the qualifying season. The minimum
qualifying is dependent upon the level:
PRIMERA & NOVILLA – More than 65%
GOLEGA & SEVILLA– More than 63%
Freestyle CARMENCITA – More than 64%
LISBOA – More than 62%
MADRID – More than 60%
MAGISTRALE & REYALE – More than 59%
Freestyles: FLAMENCA, FANDANGO, LUSITANIA & IBERICA – More than 65%
-
16
Competitors must also:
a) Be ranked among those selected for the tests in question. In the case of a draw/tie of
points between two competitors, the scores will be broken down as follows: the competitor will
be selected who participated in the largest number of events organized by the MCI GB. If there
is still a draw/tie both competitors will be selected.
b) A horse cannot participate twice in the final of the same test in the same year. If at the
end of the selections a horse is selected twice for the Masters (final) for the same test, the
owner must choose which rider he/she wishes to compete his/her horse. This means that in the
selection for the final there will be an unselected competitor for the test.
c) A rider may not participate 3 times during the year in the final of the same test (even if
the number of points earned is sufficient). If at the end of the selections, a rider is selected more
than twice for the Masters (final) for the same test, it will be necessary to choose the one horse
they wish to compete. This means that in the selection for the final there will be an unselected
competitor for the test.
d) A horse can participate in up to two finals (Masters) during the year. If at the end of the
selections a horse is selected for more than 2 finals (Masters), the owner must choose from all
of the selections which 2 finals they wish to compete in. This means that in the selection for the
final there will be an unselected competitor for the test.
e) For a horse to participate in the finals of PRIMERA and NOVILLA, the horse must not
exceed 6 years of age during that calendar year.
f) If a Declaration of withdrawal for the finals is received by the due date, the next
combination that has qualified but not yet selected will be offered this place.
14 – ORGANISATION OF THE EUROPEAN MASTERS (FINAL)
Regulations applied to the Masters final is the same as that which governs the tests in the

15 – RANKINGS OF THE EUROPEAN MASTERS (FINAL)
15.1 Individual Masters (14 titles)
Each test will result in a ranking of first to last qualifying competitor. Competitors ride individually
and under the colours of the Nationality of the rider. In the case of a draw/tie between
competitors, the competitor wearing traditional dress will be ranked ahead. If there is still a tie,
the highest overall score will decide the final ranking. If a tie still exists the competitors will be
ranked equally.

15.2 Masters National team (qualification circuit)
For team ranking, this is calculated by adding the scores accumulated in percentages to 3
decimal points. The top 13 percentages attained by competitors for each team count but with
the following restrictions:
Only the top 13 percentages achieved by the competitors for each team will be calculated but
under the following rules:
• Two young horse results (PRIMERA or NOVILLA)
• The 5 best results obtained in Freestyle (CARMENCITA, FLAMENCA, FANDANGO,
LUSITANIA, and IBERICA), only the top 2 from each Freestyle test count.
• The best 6 results obtained in the tests: GOLEGA, SEVILLA, LISBOA, MADRID,
MAGISTRALE and REYALE.
• The 2 lowest scores are then deducted for an accumulation of 11 results
In case of a tie between teams, the lowest score will be reinstated. If the tie still remains a 14th
best result (whatever its origin) will be included in the calculation. If a tie still exists, a 15th result
will be included in the calculation and so on until the tiebreaker between the teams.
The top 3 teams will be rewarded on a podium with medals for: Gold, Silver and Bronze.
15.3 European Champion Title
For the European Champion title, a combined ranking will be established alongside the
individual Masters tests, this title will be presented on a podium with medals for the first 3: Gold,
Silver and Bronze.
Final places are calculated by adding the average scores of tests achieved in percentages to
three decimal points. In case of a tie, the competitor in traditional dress will be ranked ahead. If
still tied, the best total points for the set of tests is the highest, the tie-breaker, then if necessary
the highest (Novilla or Freestyle) artistic points decide the ranking:
There will be 7 European Champion Titles in 2016:
Level Young Horse = PRIMERA + NOVILLA
Level 1 = GOLEGA + Freestyle CARMENCITA
Level 2 = SEVILLA + Freestyle FLAMENCA
Level 3 = LISBOA + Freestyle FANDANGO
Level 4 = MADRID + Freestyle LUSITANIA
Level 5 = MAGISTRALE + Freestyle IBERICA
Level 6 = REYALE + Freestyle IBERICA

19 – RULES OF THE COMPETITION ARENA AND WARM UP AREAS
The warm up arena/s is provided to work in the horses before the tests. It is therefore necessary
to ensure that riders (and their horses) are respectful of other riders. Ensure that the schedule
for the day is observed. Ensure before entering the ring that your outfit is correct and your tack
properly adjusted. Arena access is restricted to registered competitors warming up or for
competing. It is prohibited for the groom, trainers or others to mount the horse in the paddock,
warm up areas or competition arena.
Trainers are not permitted inside the warm up or competition arenas and are only allowed
outside of the warm up arena. Verbal comments and training remarks must be made quietly and
with discretion from the edge of the arena and without disturbing other riders. Any electronic
earbud devices can be used in the warm up arenas or paddock area but must be removed
before entering the competition arena. The assistance of a third person with a whip or cane to
help the rider is not permitted.
Unless with explicit authorization of Stewards of the warm up arenas or paddock areas, it is
forbidden to lunge or walk the horse in hand or to stand in the middle of the track. To reduce the
risk of accidents, keep a reasonable distance from other horses and follow the priorities. Riders
must pass on the left rein and the left rein will always have priority.
Riders practicing transitions and movements other than walk, halt or reinback will have
precedence. Passage, piaffe and pirouette take precedence over all other paces and
movements. Boots and bandages are allowed in the warm up areas but not in the competition
arean during the tests. If possible a pre-paddock will be provided for adjusting the tack or to
remove boots and bandages. Do not stop in the middle of the track. If this space does not exist
please leave the warm up arena to perform any adjustments and removal of boots and
bandages.
Check that none of the tack can harm the horse. Injury from the bridle, spur or hand will result in
immediate disqualification, both in the warm up and in the test. Do not hesitate to ask the
Stewards of the warm up if you are unsure. Comply with their instructions and treat them with
courtesy. They are there to help you.
