Shore Solutions, located at 986 Palm Avenue in Imperial Beach was started on theprinciple that the customer is a companys most important asset. In todays impersonalworld of large business, customer service has suffered. Companies place profits over

service, and price over quality. At Shore Solutions we believe that its possible to providequality products at affordable prices, without sacrificing customer service. Were bigenough to serve, and small enough to care.

We do this by harnessing a large network of partners and suppliers as well as ourdecades of logistical experience to source the finest products at the best prices underthe most demanding of requirements. In todays world of limited personnel resourcesand constrained budgets, we understand the importance of getting the right products

Just to set the record straight: Yes, I agreed to a Mayoral

candidates only forum requested by my opponent on Sep-

tember 30th. I agreed by stating that this forum was to be

hosted by a non-partisan group. October 23 was the date

my opponent suggested. His last correspondence to me was

on October 1st stating that he was going check and get back

to me. He never did. My opponent now announces on line

that he has a debate set for October 27 without inviting me.

When a New York Union is spending upwards of $ 60,000

to buy the Mayor and City Council of Imperial Beach, you

have to ask WHY?? What do they want with our sleepy little

beach town? I will not participate in any way in a dog and

pony show hosted by yet another Union endorsing candi-

    dates in Imperial Beach.

I will be at the forum hosted by the League of Women

Voters along the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce.

    See you there.

    DRACULA UNTOLD

Coming to theatres in the Halloween month from director Gary Shore and UniversalPictures comes a story you dont know with DRACULA UNTOLD.

This film tells the tale of Vlad Tepes (Luke Evans); it is the turn of the century anda peaceful time for his kingdom. Once having been a slave-child warrior for theTurks, he earned the nickname Vlad the Impaler. Not wanting that life anymoreVlad returns to his wife Mirena (Sarah Gadon) and son Ingeras (Art Parkinson).

Celebrating their twenty year peace, it is interrupted by the return of Mehmed(Dominic Cooper) who not only comes for tribute but for 1,000 boys to become, once again, slave-child warriors for the Turkish army. Vlad tries to reason withchildhood friend Mehmed but fails.

His only choice is to discover what creature lives in the mountain. Vlad comes faceto face with a master Vampire (Charles Dance) who gives him the opportunity toknow the strength and power of being a vampire. As with all deals with monsters,it comes with a price.

It is a price Vlad must weight for his family and a kingdom he has sworn to protect!

FINAL WORD: Evans as Vlad does a tremendous job as the warrior turned peacefulleader of a kingdom. We want to portray this character in a different light, we wantto shake things up and what better place to start than from the beginning, saysEvans of his character. He gives believability to this man Vlad trying to fight themonster that he can become.

Gadon as wife Mirena is lovely and it is clear she will do anything to keep her childfrom the Turks. When she realizes Vlad has made a sacrifice like no other shestands by him. That doesnt stop Mehmed from coming to take what he thinks hes

entitled to. Cooper as Mehmed has an Alexander or Napoleon complex believingthat he can take without consequence. Oh most crazy rulers think the same.

Dance as the master Vampire is absolutely delicious to watch. The first time I sawthis actor was as Sardo Numspa in THE GOLDEN CHILD. I knew then that hewould be an actor that would stand out for me. Plus, without him how could myfamily constantly say, My dear brother Numsey! Yea, we love that stuff. Then, in2011 he would capture us once again as Tywin Lannister and be thrilled once again. So it should be no shock that in DRACULA UNTOLD, he gets a chance to be evilonce again!

Other cast include: Diamaid Murtaugh as Dimitru, Paul Kaye as Brother Lucian,William Houstan as Cazan, Noah Huntley as Captain Petru, Ronan Vibert as Simion,Zach McGowan as Shkelgim, Ferdinand Kingsley as Hamza Bey, Joseph Long asGeneral Omer, Thor Kristjansson as Bright Eyes and Jakub Gierszal as Acemi.

TUBS OF POPCORN: I give DRACULA UNTOLD four tubs of popcorn out offive. I will admit that there was a fleeting thought that this could go horribly wrong

but from beginning to end I enjoyed it. There is a brief history and then straight toa story of the man turned creature but the bad guy image is clearly given to themaster Vampire. The story also leaves the door open for letting the games begin.

Id definitely be ready to see where the story goes.Jenise says of the film, It is definitely a four out of five tubs for me. The story wasactually quite original in the way it was told. Told from a different perspective Ireally enjoyed it. Evans gets into the role and gives is some very cool angles. Ihonestly couldnt find a single thing I didnt like about the film.

The cinematography is very well done and the IMAX only makes the images sharperand the sound is amazing. From the battles to the changing of Vlad, the film isntover done and the cgi actually compliments the story rather than take over the story.

So if you are ready for the thrills and scares to begin the Halloween season, then getthe gang together and hit the theatres for DRACULA UNTOLD!

In the end every bloodline has a beginning!

Last Fridays game against Santana was a rough one for the Mari-

ners (3-2) as they fell to the Sultans 21-35. Santana was able tocapitalize one some mistakes made by the Mariners, and that was

the difference in the ballgame. Senior QB Ben Munoz did have a

career high of 3 TD passes, 2 to Senior WR Nijal Collins and 1 to

Senior WR Josh Cooper. The game was tied at halftime, then the

Sultans ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and then the

Mariners fumbled deep in their own territory to give the Sultans a

    short field.

Despite the loss, the players are maintaining a positive attitude and

look to show their resolve and improvement in their next contest against

San Ysidro on October 17th at 7PM (at Mar Vista).

The annual Bell Game against Southwest High School on October

10th has been cancelled as the Raiders had to forfeit due to injuries

and a lack of players. The Bell Game is a rivalry game between

Southwest and Mar Vista that was started in 1979 by Southwest

Head Coach RC Arciaga and Mar Vista Head Coach Nick Nicoloff. Itis the second longest trophy game in the Sweetwater District. This is

the first time that the game has had to be forfeited by either team.

Mar Vista has one the Bell Game the past six seasons as the Raid-

ers last win against Mar Vista was in 2007.

FCC UNANIMOUSLY NIXES SPORTS BLACKOUT RULE

The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday unanimously voted to end a 39-year-old regulation preventing cable and satellite providers from airing games blackedout on local broadcast channels. It is the commissions job to serve the public interest, not the private interests of teamowners, Commissioner Ajit Pai said. The NFL had argued that the rule which applies to all pro sports teams, but mostimpacts football was necessary to keep fans in stadium seats. (The league blacksout games that do not sell out, ostensibly to keep broadcasts from giving the impres-sion the sport is unpopular.) Yet the rule was originally imposed when the league mademost of its revenue from ticket sales. So critics argued, and the FCC agreed, that therule was outdated now that enormous TV deals have become significant moneymakersfor pro leagues and teams.

ties included childrens beach challenge, blues bands, BBQ and beer gar-

den. IB Posse also came out and showed their support with a sandcastle ofa surfer on a car, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Local Impe-rial Beach Surfers made up 63% of the competition, just to name a fewKyle Knox, Mike Girdner, Daniel Dedina, Cameron Bartz, Peachy Aldredge,Jack and Peter Stewart. A total of 100 local kids entered and 80 of themwere sponsored by the community to enter at 0 cost to them! Without thesupport of the community an event of this magnitude would not have been

possible. There were many local favorites and some of the hardest foughtout heats of the day. The Menehune Division (11 and under) were a crowdfavorite, even if these guys are small they had some huge scores and somegreat skills! The event is held in honor of legendary Imperial Beach surferand lifeguard Dempsey Holder and celebrates the need to preserve our

beaches and ocean. Coming together as a community and supporting ourlocal kids we are teaching them how to protect our environment whilerespectfully using it. Dempsey Holder director Zach Plopper of Wildcoastsums it up best All in all it was a super successful event. The kids andadults were absolutely stoked to have ripable conditions and warm waterand surf in a super grassroots and community event. For a complete listof results go to http://www.wildcoast.net

    MAYOR OF

    IMPERIAL BEACH

    WHO'S RUNNING:

    IMPERIAL BEACH CITY COUNCIL

    WHO'S RUNNING:

    2014 IMPERIAL BEACH

    CANDIDATE FORUM

The purpose of the forum was to provide an opportunity for residents to

learn about our municipal governance philosophy and views on city issues

so that we may make an informed choice when we vote. This event was

held at the new gymnasium at Mar Vista High School off Imperial BeachBlvd. on Thursday Oct 9th from 6pm-8pm. The timing and questions were

moderated by the League of Women Voters San Diego.

    MAYOR JIM JANNEY SERGE DEDINA

    ERIKA LOWERY

    COUNCIL MEMBER ED SPRIGGSJIM KING

    COUNCIL MEMBER LORIE BRAGG

    ELIZABETH SALDANA

According the The League of Women Voters, Thurs-day nights turn out at Mar Vista High School Gym forthe Candidates Forum may have been a record turn-out. People from all walks of life and all political per-suasions attended the event sponsored by the Leagueof Womens Voters and the IB Chamber of Commerce.Questions were written by members of the audienceand it was apparent that everyone was there for thesame reason; For the Love of Imperial Beach! Whiledifferent groups and different candidates may havedifferent views on what is and what should be; every-one in attendance was there because of their Love for

    VALERIE ACEVEZ

this Town and their concerns about the future of thistown they call home.

Because 3 council seats are up for election this cycle, itis an especially important election for Imperial Beachsfuture. 3 Council seats is a majority of City Council ifthey vote together.

Depending which 3 are elected will determine the fu-ture of Imperial Beach; for better or worse.

The Mayors race will require a clear majority of votesas there are only two people running for the one Mayorsseat. The City Council Seats are quite another thing.

Because there are more than two candidates running foreach City Council seat, it will not take that many votes toget elected as the votes will be diluted by a factor of 3.That means if 34% of the votes cast could elect the nextmajority of future City Council Votes. If all of the regis-tered voters do not turn out and vote, it wont take verymany votes at all to become a City Council Person! Thatis a big part of the reason so many concerned ImperialBeach residents from all age groups and all walks of lifecame to hear the candidates speak and answer some oftheir questions Thursday night. No doubt there are manymore questions that citizens would like to hear answers

to but, they got a taste of the demeanor and candor of most of the candidates andcould see who was able to think and talk at the same time and learn a little bit moreabout whether the candidates embrace the same policy and direction that the cityhas been on or whether they might do things differently in the future.

Finding a balance between economic development of tourism and maintaining someof that small town feeling at the same time came up several times. Several of thecandidates had opinions on what that balance might be like or if its even achievableonce development takes off? Many of the changes of the next 4 years will be irre-versible and will impact Imperial Beach and the quality of life for decades into the

future. Most people in attendance were obviously concerned about the future direc-tion that City Council for the next 4 years will pursue. Will it be more of the same orsomething different? Will Imperial Beach be ruined by over-development or main-tain its quiet beach town atmosphere? Will they still be interested in the individual voterson the day after the election too? And just what does Classic Southern California BeachTown really mean? It could be interpreted differently by many people.

Many of the candidates answers were direct, sincere and to the point; while someothers seemed to go back to selected talking points that may not actually have beenanswers to the questions that were being asked at that time. Some of the candidatesseemed comfortable to answer questions frankly and directly while others readspeeches and quotes from other famous politicians or were obviously quite nervousand uncomfortable. Some answers seemed more sincere than others that soundedrehearsed or scripted.

Incumbent Jim Janney was a City Councilman for 4 years and has been the Mayorfor the last 8 years.

Challenger Serge Dedina also is seeking the position of Mayor for the next 4 years.

Incumbent Lori Bragg has been on City Council for 8 years and seeks another 4 years.

Incumbent Ed Spriggs has been on City Council for 4 years and is seeking a second 4year term.

Challenger Former City Councilman Jim King is seeking one of the 4 year term CityCouncil seats.

Challenger Erika Lowery is seeking one of the 4 year City Council seats.

Challenger Valerie Acevez is seeking one of the 4 year City Council Seats.

Challenger Elizabeth Saldana is seeking one of the 4 year City Council Seats.

One thing was clear. All of the candidates for office Love Imperial Beach and so do allof the public that was in attendance. Although they may perceive reality differently, they all love Imperial Beach deeply.

It would be difficult to claim that anyone was a winner or a loser of the debates as theywere not really debating but, rather fielding questions from the voters in the room. Thereal winners and losers will be decided November 4th at the polls. Imperial Beach is atan important crossroad in its history and if all registered voters do not come out andvote, then perhaps not the best people could win. If you and your neighbors dontvote, then you have no right to ever complain about anything that the City does to you, your family, your business or your livelihood in the future. This election provideschoice of continuing the same course and policies that have led Imperial Beach to this

point in history, or to bring in fresh blood and perhaps redirect the trajectory of Impe-rial Beachs future. The representatives you elect will decide that future for you.

You probably know at least one person who attended Thursday nights forum that canbetter tell you their impressions and opinions of the candidates. We encourage all runningfor office to advertise in our next pre-election edition so that they can be sure that thought-ful voters will know exactly what they stand for and why they are running for electedoffice. And dont forget to vote November 4th! The Town you save may be your own!

(For the Love of IB Contd)

January 2014 the State Department of Finance approved the sale of these parcels that were formerly

the Miracle Shopping Center to Sudberry Development for approximately $275,000.

While its too late for this election cycle and will likely be too late by the time the next election cycle comesaround but, shouldnt Imperial Beach have voting precincts or districts so that each neighborhood has arepresentative on City Council? Historically people that live near the beach have dominated previous CityCouncils. Many of the neighborhoods that are in the redevelopment crosshairs have never been representedadequately on City Council. Whoever gets elected to Council this election cycle should embrace either anagenda item or referendum item to designate geographic voting districts or precincts. Each City Council Seatshould represent a particular neighborhood and the Mayor (Tie-Breaking Vote) could come from any ofthose districts. What do you think?
