Bioaccumulation

• Toxins in the body that break down slowly or not at all can accumulate or increase over time until the animal dies.

Biomagnification

• Small amounts of toxins in lower tropic levels can increase in amounts when food travels to higher trophic levels.

Toxins

Toxin – Harmful or poisonous chemical or molecule

DDT- “dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane” a pesticide that was sprayed to control bugs in the 1940’s- 1970’s.

Dieldrin- pesticide, stored in the fat of animals higher up the food chain.

Mercury – metallic element that can be harmful to ingest. Often found in top predatory fish.
