“Extra Special Signature”

There was a time when Sam Glenn was just getting by, lacking both professional and personal success. Then, one day, he found a four-inch plastic lizard in his mother's lasagna and his life changed. What started off as a joke between mother and son became a lasting commitment to making things happen. Imagine that, one thoughtful, gesture (or "lizard experience") can be all it takes to kick our motivation into high gear. What do you want to be remembered for? When you look back on your life, what will others remember about you? What will your legacy be? Did you use up the best of who you are, or will there be leftovers? The “lizard experience” was something Glenn’s mom started by using her uniqueness mixed with a positive attitude. It probably will be something she will always be known for—hiding a toy lizard in lasagna and setting something positive in motion that would impact many people. We all have the ability to create a legacy for ourselves when we care enough to give the best of who we are with a positive attitude. In an old TV show, the Lone Ranger, the lone Ranger was always leaving behind a symbol of his greatness—a silver bullet. In another old TV show, Zorro, Zorro did something similar. Whenever he did a good deed, he left his mark, the letter Z, scratched on a wall with his sword. What do you want to be remembered for? Some want to be known for their kindness and sincerity. That's part of their extra special signature. Maybe some of us like to do nice things for others. It doesn't matter whether we are at work or at home, in public or around only one other person. If the opportunity presents itself to act, we do. This is meaningful because through extra special signature actions, many of us are motivated to do the same. Ironically, showing insensitivity and rudeness can also motivate others to react in the same way. The only difference is that there is not a single benefit to being insensitive or rude. Not one. To act with kindness is to take an opportunity to build a legacy. Maybe your act of kindness is to get involved with a cause that helps children with cancer. Maybe it's being a source of encouragement for others. We've all had times when we've needed help and wondered whom we could call on. What will your legacy be? All the best, Jerre

"Firma Extra Especial"

Student Ministries

A Note From Bryce "And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my

church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.”

- Matthew 16:18

Who do you turn to for help? What about if you needed

someone to cover for you if you need to be gone? Who would

you turn to? All of us have people that we rely on when we

can’t do everything by ourselves.

Even superheroes have sidekicks or friends that they turn to for

assistance. Batman has Robin. Superman has the Justice

League. This month our youth will look at a variety of sidekicks

– those heroes that are vital for success, but are not the well

known hero. As we look at their stories, we will use them to

understand some of the “sidekicks” throughout Scripture.

People like Barnabas, who traveled with Paul. We will hear

about Aaron, who was vital to helping Moses free the Israelites.

Or even someone like Peter, the disciple Jesus left in charge of

the church.

As we look at these “sidekicks”, we will come to understand

how important it is to have people guiding us in our faith. Take

some time this month to think about who helps you connect with

God or encourages you in your faith. This month, take note of

your faith sidekick.

Weekly Programs Sunday School: Our Sunday School program meets Sunday mornings from 10:00-11:00 in the RZ Room. Through the school year, we will be discovering what it means to have our lives transformed by our faith, so that we can follow Christ more closely. In doing so, we will use the higher curriculum series. Reality Zone: Our youth ministry offers youth an opportunity to discover what it means to be in a real, authentic relationship with the God who created, redeems, and sustains all things. This year, our theme is "Live Heroically", in which we will utilize the concepts out of the Marvel and DC Comics universes to discover how our faith encourages us to live like heroes. Join us for a great time of food, worship, discussion, and fellowship! High School meets from 5:30-8:15, while Middle School meets from 4:15-7:30.

What to Know:

Our Ski Retreat is February 16-19 in Red River, New Mexico. This year, our theme is “Taking The Pilgrimage,” in which we will

utilize stories about superheroes that travel to distant lands to train

and connect with a mentor to understand how people

throughout the Bible traveled into the wilderness to connect with

God. In doing so, our youth will also have a great deal of time to connect with God themselves.

As always, we ask the congregation to cover half of the cost. If you are willing to help,

please put your donation in the ½ envelopes on February 4 or submit them to the office.

Mark 22:29 Jesus replied, “The most

important one is Israel, listen! Our God

is the one Lord, and you must love the

Lord your God with all your heart, with

all your being, with all your mind, and

with all your strength. The second is

this, You will love your neighbor as yourself.

No other commandment is greater than these.”

Do you ever wonder why the things that are

the greatest and seem the simplest are the

hardest to understand? Ask a child why it is

important to be kind, show generosity, be

respectful, help others, share, or be positive

and those who have experienced God’s love

will respond because Jesus does. Or

something along those lines. Jesus answers the

questions of his time on earth the most

important thing to do is love God and love

others.

So why did people of his time not get it? Why

do we forget? Jesus must know our struggle

since he over and over demonstrates what both

look like in story after story showing us

examples.

Just as children yearn for things to do to see

Christ in life, don’t we too sense God’s love

most as we DO something.

Family Faith Nights are offered the 1st and

3rd Wednesday for all families. I was

reminded and affirmed from some of the

parents who attend how impactful the mission

type nights are. Yes, stories fill hearts with the

Word and activities build practice of the

knowledge we are learning. Yet, when we

show love to each other and love in Christ by

doing and giving, Jesus is very present. We

will continue to seek ways to connect through

prayers with our families and children.

As we continue through this winter time, may

you find ways to experience God’s love in

your church family, your own families,

relationships, work, and friends.

God Bless,

Melyssa

Marcos 22:29 Jesús respondió: "El más

importante es Israel, ¡escucha! Nuestro

Dios es el único Señor, y debes amar al

Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con

todo tu ser, con toda tu mente y con

todas tus fuerzas. El segundo es este:

amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. Ningún

otro mandamiento es mayor que estos ".

¿Te has preguntado alguna vez por qué las cosas

que son más grandes y parecen las más simples

son las más difíciles de entender? Pregúntele a

propias familias, relaciones, trabajo y amigos.

Dios bendiga,

Melyssa

SARAH SAYS

This Is the Day That the Lord has made;

Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 118:24 This was my father-in-law, John Godbey's, favorite Bible verse. Every morning we were together through the years, he would start the day by quoting this verse. The grand kids learned it first from him and we all tried to learn to rejoice in each day. Both John Godbey and scriptures, are always prompting us to embrace today. "Now is the day of salvation." 2 Corinthians 6:2, "Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts" (Hebrews 3:15). God knows we can only live in the present, and He encourages us to make good use of it. This day is our gift from God. We can waste it with regrets over our past or worries about our future. We can squander it trying to outrun yesterday's miseries. We can ignore it, lost in our wishful thinking. It's up to us to decide what to do wth it. God would have us make the most of this day. What are you seeking for tomorrow? More opportunities? Personal Growth? Better relationships? Embrace today. Learn the lessons the Lord requires of you today. Be faithful with the things God entrusts to you today. Let God's presence sustain you through this day's trials. Rejoice in the opportunities God brings to you today. God has a future for you, but you have to live in today to get there. Step out in faith when God asks you to trust Him. Sing it and live it: This is the day that the Lord had made. Rejoice and be glad! (Ideas taken from: "Songs 4 Worship: Open the Eyes of My Heart," Daily Devotions)

It is true that when everything

is going well our motivation is

high. However, when things are

not going the way we want, we lose

motivation, even to the point of

despair.

_We must remember Timothy's

words to Paul, But you, Timothy,

keep your head in all situations,

endure hardship, do the work of an

evangelist, discharge all the duties of

your ministry. 2 Timothy 4.5.

¿What does this show you?

-Most people do not see difficulties

as opportunities for growth. We do

not believe that truly all things work

for the best in our lives. Here are

moments of trial & pain. The key to

our motivation in times of trial is not

to allow despair to enter our lives, but

to focus on the good. You will be a

different person after you experience

adversity - it will either weaken or

strengthen you. We were created for

a purpose and a mission, we will be

able to move forward when our

forces depend on God alone, and not

on our own strength.

-What shall it be?

-How would you like to lead your life?

-Motivated or unmotivated?

Raciel Quintana.

_Es cierto que cuando las

cosas están saliendo bien

nuestra motivación está alta;

sin embargo, cuando las cosas no

salen como quisiéramos nuestra

tendencia es a desmotivarnos e

inclusive a desesperarnos. Debemos

recordar las palabras de Pablo a

Timoteo: Pero tú, Timoteo, mantén la

calma en todo momento, soporta los

sufrimientos y anuncia siempre la

buena noticia. Haz bien tu trabajo.” 2

Timoteo 4:5.

¿Qué puedes ver aquí?

La mayoría de las personas no

alcanzan a ver las dificultades como

oportunidades para crecer, no

creemos que verdaderamente todas

las cosas nos ayuden a bien. Y todas

las cosas incluyen momentos

difíciles, momentos de dolor. La

clave para mantenerse motivado en

tiempos difíciles es evitar caer en

desesperanza y concentrarse en

buscar el beneficio. La adversidad

nunca te dejará igual; tienes dos

opciones en los momentos difíciles:

te debilita o te da fuerzas. Fuimos

creados para un propósito y una

misión, podremos avanzar cuando

nuestras fuerzas dependan solo de

Dios, y no de nuestra propia fuerza

- ¿Qué escoges? - ¿Cómo te gustaría vivir la vida? - ¿Motivado o desmotivado?

Raciel Quintana.

UMW READING PROGRAM

Without You, there Is No Us By Suki Kim

Suki Kim was born in South Korea, and at age 13 moved with her family to the United States. This book is about her experiences later teaching at a university in Pyongyang. She taught English to some of the nation’s most elite male students. All the other universities were closed that year and those students had been sent to construction sites to work rather than being allowed to continue their studies. Occasionally the teachers were taken on outings. The first was to an apple farm. Their guide explained that the apples grown there were the biggest, roundest, most tasty in the world. To get there the bus had driven by lush green fields, with low mountains on the horizon. There were no cars on the road but there were a few people walking along the side. As the bus got closer to one group, Suki could see that “their faces were ghastly, as though they had not been fed in years.” They were dressed in rags. When the tour was over, the bus returned to the university by a different route. This book shows a picture of things we are not allowed to see. Things that are hard to believe, but on some level, we all know we must believe. Peg Abbey Education for Mission (2018)

UMW Honor/Memory Books Books may be given in honor or memory of someone at any time. This is how it works. Choose a book from the UMW Library and let the librarians know which book you have selected. Your donation of $20 will go to the UMW Reading Program. Additionally, when a circle member passes, her circle selects a book and donates $20 to the Reading Program. A sticker will be placed in the book with the donor’s name and the one being honored or memorialized. The book remains part of the UMW Library. Last year these books were given in honor or memory of someone: Memorial Books: Fully Awake and Truly Alive for Charlcie Black by Night Circle Worry Less So You Can Live More for Virginia Clark by Morning Circle Pat Kolb & Peg Abbey, UMW Librarians

OPERATION CHRISTMAS

CHILD 2018

If you are wondering about the Christmas table set up in the foyer, here’s the story. After feeling very rushed to complete the Christmas Boxes last year, we decided that we would try collecting items for the boxes all during the year. We’ve divided the items up by month, in the hope that this would make it easier for all of us to contribute. If we only need to give a few items per month, spread out over a year, it will not be a financial burden. We will have a Packing Party, encouraging all to come and help with filling the boxes. The items needed each month will be posted at the foyer table and in the bulletin. We can watch for sales on items like stuffed animals and school supplies. Buying items in large packages is usually cheaper and can be used in several boxes. Anyone wishing to fill boxes as a family is encouraged to do so and we will deliver them along with the others. The boxes all go to Third World countries and this is probably the only Christmas present these children will ever receive. They take them home to their families and share the contents with everyone. After receiving the shoebox gifts, children are invited back to participate in the discipleship program, The Greatest Journey. During this 12-lesson course, children come to know Christ, grow in faith and learn how to share the Gospel with others. After completion of this course, there is a graduation celebration and the children are given a Bible that includes the New Testament and selected Old Testament stories. Chances are, this is the first copy of God’s word this family has ever owned. Families often come to faith in Christ following this Christmas Gift. Just the knowledge that our gift of love, in the form of a Christmas present, is proof that God does work in mysterious ways. May you all be blessed by this ministry and pray for the children receiving this gift. Feel free to pick up any literature and learn more about this disciple’s program across the world. If you have questions or would like to be a part of this ministry, call Marti Spencer at 620-338-

0850. Remember, January items are Ivory Soap, toothbrushes and toothbrush covers. February items are stuffed animals, combs, hair brushes and hair ties.

2018 LENTEN STUDY

“Made for a Miracle” (from your ordinary to God’s extraordinary)

Wednesday’s 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

Church Library Did you know that when we hope for the impossible, it involves more than praying for God’s transcendent power? There are two components to every miracle: divine action and human responsibility. Each of us has been given specific talents and abilities. For a real miracle to take place, God expects us to apply these talents and abilities—acting with God to perform divine work. By examining biblical examples of how to use your God-given gifts for God’s glory, author and Pastor Mike Slaughter helps you discover that you, too, were “Made for a Miracle”. The study begins on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 and continues through Wednesday, March 28, 2018. Come for all six sessions or as many as you can.

OUR MINISTRY and MISSON GIVING

Great churches. Great leaders. Great disciples. Transforming the world.

Each church within the Great Plains Conference of the United Methodist Church is asked each year to support

the ministry of the United Methodist Church through our Ministry and Mission fund. For 2018, that

“apportionment” for First United Methodist Church of Dodge City is $67,706.

As United Methodists, each of us is called to participate in the outreaching ministry of

Jesus Christ. Through our faithful participation of paying our Ministry and Mission

askings, we put our faith into action, we live out John Wesley’s call, to “live out our faith

by doing good of every possible sort, and, as far as possible, to all people”
