Celebrity Interview7

Congratulations to the victors in the recent spring elections. Dallas County citizens voted at a rate of about 7.5%.

SEVEN POINT FIVE PERCENT!

WTF! OMG! SMH!

As I recall the many stories over the years that I have written focusing on people voting for the first time, or how important one vote is, the thought of a 7.5% voter turnout is enough to turn one’s stomach.

What were you doing on election day? Did you vote early, or at all?

To beat folks over the head about voting only adds stress to my life.

SEVEN POINT FIVE PERCENT! WTF! OMG! SMH!

World Class PortBy Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

The international inland port in the city’s southern sector wi l l c rea te , once fu l ly c o m p l e t e d ,

more than 30,000 jobs according to officials centrally involved in the project. It is one of the most significant projects that regional leaders and governments are engaged in, and I fully support it. The port is possible because of the region’s superior transportation infrastructure which includes five interstate highways and two world-class railroad lines. The port currently services the needs of companies such as Whirl Pool, Unilever, Home Depot, American Standard and Kohl’s that store products in the facility and later ships them to other destinations. Companies such as BMW, Ace Hardware, Quaker Oaks and L’Oreal should be operational in the port by the end of this year. It is anticipated that the port will become one of the major distribution centers within a 24 hour drive of Dallas. Goods from Mexico, Central America and South America and Asia are shipped to the port, which is located two miles from where highways I- 20 and I- 45 intersect. The idea was conceived in 2005. The projected completion date is 2038. The concept of inland ports has gained popularity over the years and they are seen as prudent alternatives to intermodal transfers at coastal ports where goods are placed directly on trucks and in railroad cars. In its early years I was able to secure federal funding for infrastructure development. As global trade expands many American coastal ports have become congested, shippers have lost time and costs have escalated. Many business owners now prefer taking their goods directly to inland ports rather than having them delayed in coastal areas. Increased international activity at the Port of Houston and the expansion of the Panama Canal are seen as bonuses for the Dallas inland port. Goods can be transported from Houston on I-45 and taken directly to the port. During my international travels, particularly in China, I speak to business leaders about the port and urge them to use its facilities. The facility receives four to six trains daily from the Long Beach/Los Angeles area. Currently, products from China that enter the U.S. come through California. They are then shipped to ports in the eastern portion of the country. Good from the inland port will be shipped to sites within a twenty-four hour trucking distance from Dallas. The five primary partners in the project are the city of Dallas, Wilmer, Hutchins, Lancaster and Desoto. By this end of this year the port is projected to have 6,000 employees. It is expected to become the most significant regional distribution facility in the country, making Dallas a world-class distribution center.

When Beyonce Knowles sang the Etta James song “At Last” at

President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration, the song could have had several meanings. At last we have an African American President? At last, the muscle of the Black vote has been flexed? At last, there is some hope for our country to come together with the mantra “Yes We Can.”

Watching the President and First Lady Michelle Obama slow dance to the romantic standard reminded us that African American families have not often been positively depicted. This attractive image of an intact Black family had come “At Last”. Thus, the song was symbolic of what many folks, and especially African Americans, believed about the Obama Presidency.

Some of us blindly believed that with an African American president opportunity had come “At Last.”

Some believed it so fervently that the least criticism of President Obama, no matter how mild and how lovingly conveyed, could cause you to be run out of the race.

An alumnus of Morehouse College, Rev. Kevin Johnson, the selected baccalaureate speaker at his alma mater, wrote an opinion piece that was mildly critical of President Obama.

As a result, former White House and new Morehouse President John S. Wilson, Jr. changed the format of baccalaureate to a panel, not one speaker, as is customary.

The purpose of baccalaureate is to have one speaker to focus on the spiritual dimensions of graduation. There is no way that Rev. Johnson would deliver a political speech. Still, he was essentially disinvited from the baccalaureate because of his views.

President Obama is the President of the United States of American, not the President of Black America. Yet, it seems that African Americans have been kicked to the curb in terms of focus and attention. Other groups – the LGBT community, the Latino community – have been mentioned explicitly. However, on African American issues, our President has been silent.

Now, some African American people are crooning “At Last.” Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx has been nominated to serve as Secretary of Transportation. If confirmed, Mayor Foxx, an outstanding an eminently qualified candidate would join Attorney General Eric Holder as the second African American to serve in the cabinet.

Similarly, the nomination of Congressman Mel Watt to lead the Federal Housing Finance Agency is a step forward. FHFA regulates Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and allows Congressman Watt the opportunity to implement some of the Obama initiatives about homeowner recovery from the Great Recession.

The raging right has already come after Congressman Watt. The Daily Caller (a political blog) has reported an unsubstantiated claim by former Presidential candidate Ralph Nader that the Congressman disrespected him in a letter. Nader has never produced the letter. Thus, the purpose of the claim is to besmirch FHFA nominee Congressman Mel Watt.

If Watt is confirmed, this represents a step forward for both President Obama and for African American people, and for the entire nation. The issue is, of course, confirmation. Will the White House Congressman, be able to garner the votes Watt needs to be confirmed?

What does the White House gain or lose if Watt is not confirmed. The “At Last” segment of the African American community will credit the President for making the

nomination, even if not confirmed. The more critical segment of the African American community will view the ways the White House embraces this nominee, and question commitment. Ask UN Ambassador Susan Rice what it feels like to be dropped, when Senate confirmation seemed unlikely.

During President Obama’s first term, his inattention to the African American community was understandable, though not acceptable. He was busy straddling lines, generating compromise, and leaving a legacy of health care reform. African Americans were patient in the hope that “as last” African Americans would get recognition in his second term.

After all, as a lame duck President, he has much to gain, and little to lose in rewarding his most loyal constituency. At last some of us have our disappointment confirmed. Our President’s inaugural speech mentioned every community except the African American community.

President Obama and his supporters should not be thin-skinned. Philadelphia’s Rev. Kevin Johnson should not be “disinvited” from the Morehouse baccalaureate. Nor should a panel dilute his message, when the tradition is to have a sole speaker.

Johnson is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College, who deserves to be treated with respect. His column pointed out realities – President Clinton appointed seven African Americans to his cabinet, President Bush, four, and President Obama, just one. Congresswoman Marcia Fudge, who leads the Congressional Black Caucus, in a letter to President Obama, wrote, “The people you have chosen to appoint in this new term have hardly been reflective of this country’s diversity.”

Are the Foxx and Watt appointments a response to criticism? Based on their appointments, should Black folks sing “at last” or “not yet”?

HHS announces winners of the reducing cancer among women of color challenge

HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health J. Nadine Gracia, MD, MSCE announced the winners of the Reducing Cancer Among Women of Color Challenge. A first-of-its-kind effort to address health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities, the winning apps will help women of color prevent and fight cancer.    The winning apps, Big Yellow Star, Broadstone Technologies, Appbrahma, HW-Technology, and Netzealous, are designed to help women of color prevent and fight cancer by linking them to information regarding preventive and screening

services and locations, including support groups and care services. The apps all focus on providing high-quality health information in different languages to women and community health workers about screening and preventive services. The apps were developed to interface securely with patient health records and strengthen communication across a patient’s care team in an effort to better coordinate information and care. “This challenge created an innovative opportunity to use new technologies and new platforms to engage women in communities that have too often been dismissed as ‘hard-to-reach,’” Dr. Gracia said.  “Through these innovative tools, we are addressing disparities by reaching women where they are – and taking an exciting step forward in implementing the HHS Action Plan to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Health

Disparities.”   “The Reducing Cancer

Among Women of Color Challenge is a great example of the positive impact health information technology can make.  Getting timely cancer preventive and treatment information to patients has always been an effective strategy.  The winners of this challenge increase our capacity to empower women across a broad socioeconomic spectrum,” said David Hunt, M.D., F.A.C.S., medical director of health IT adoption & patient safety at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC).In the United States, breast and gynecologic cancers are responsible for more than 68,000 deaths each year with over 300,000 new diagnoses made each year. Women of color are disproportionately affected due to various reasons, including the inability to access health care and preventive information, services, referral, and treatment.

That Celebrity Interview

with Valder Beebe

“I don’t talk about the Stars -- I interview the World’s Most Fascinating Celebrities”

The public has voted Tamala Jones TV’s hottest medical examiner on “Favorite TV Crime Drama,” CASTLE. Her role is the sassy, sarcastic, sexy coroner, “Lanie Parish.” Valder Beebe: I’m excited for you and the success of ABC’s CASTLE. But before sharing about your role, tell me about what is close to your heart?

Tamala: I suffered a life-threatening brain aneurysm at the young age of 23 when the median age for aneurysms is 50 years old. I have not spoken publicly much about this because I was embarrassed, but that is what youth can do to you. I now serve as the spokesperson for the B r a i n A n e u r y s m Foundation, especially educating people in my age group.

Valder: When a life condition at that age threatens death, how do you live your life?

Tamala: You’ve got to live life like every day is your last and only day. You can’t get hung up on s m a l l a n d n e g at i ve things. You deal with things as they come; be a positive person and just spread love. I think that people have forgotten how much love means to the world; and when you a l m o s t d i e , y o u remember. You need love in order to survive. You must give love to receive love.

Valder Beebe: Tell me about being on ABC’s CASTLE? It’s touted as one of the hottest medical dramas on TV, and some have said “this role is a great role for you.”

Tamala: I love being on CASTLE. I never thought I would be able to play any type of doctor. This is de#nitely a challenge. It showed me where I can go and that I really do not have limits. My limits are the ones I put in front of me. Being able to have this challenge and to conquer it, I feel good about it. I am among such great actors and crew, I feel amazing. CASTLE has been nothing but a blessing to me all the way around.

Valder Beebe: You got a gift early. You have taken that gift, and you are living your life out loud.

THE WORLD

Michael Baisden Commentary: It’s Not About The Job It’s About The Journey (Yes, I'm leaving radio)

Who would have ever thought that a black man from the South Side of Chicago, with no college degree, no formal training in radio, TV, or writing, and the youngest son to a single 17 year-old teenaged mother with three children, would one day lead civil rights protest and help to elect the first black President. Life is truly amazing!

I am proud of what I have accomplished with my life and look forward to what is to come next. Life is full of new beginnings, whether it’s a new relationship or a new business venture; change is the one constant...and we must learn to embrace it.

For years I’ve encouraged you to step out on faith to live your dream, to never compromise your principles, and most importantly, not to be afraid to try something new, but above all else, dare to be different. Well, it’s time for me to practice what I preach!

When I began writing books in 1993, my only goal was to have a positive impact and challenge people to think outside the box. In 1995 I took that leap of faith and left my job with a four-year-old child to support, three thousand dollars in my pocket, and a dream. And as strange as this may sound, there was never a doubt in my mind that I would make it.

Gwen

My Fiance can’t marry me. His wife is crazy!Four years ago, I met my fiance at church. He has proven to be the perfect man, but married. I did not hesitate dating because he immediately explained the mental state of his wife. This is the problem: His wife is in a state that does not allow divorce when the spouse is not in sound mind.

I am hearing a lot of gossip. Some church members say my fiance would beat his wife. They say he once beat her so badly she was hospitalized – and from that point she walked with a limp.

Gwendolyn, do you think she will ever be again of sound mind? How long should I hang in there for a chance to be his wife? Gloria

Dear Gloria

Let me tell you this: I will share a situation similar to yours. I know of a lady who claimed to be just a casual friend to a church man.

People knew they were courting but pretended due to the fact his wife was in a mental institution, they could not marry.

This lady dated this married man for years. When his wife died while in the institution, that left her husband available to marry. But guess what? He married another lady and they had a huge expensive wedding. The nice lady who had dated him aged 20 years or more looking sad and downhearted.

I strongly advise not to wait hoping to be his wife. Think about it. He probably caused his wife’s mental condition. So back to your question of how long you should hang in there, I say —two months. If you continue to date him, think about it. His wife is not the only one —-crazy.

Start spreading the news. The stars of “R&B Divas Atlanta” recently traveled to New York, New York, to celebrate amethyst-coiffed cast member Monifah’s birthday and support her first performance in a decade back in her hometown. In Episode Three: Work It Diva, Monifah (Mo for short) opens the show by welcoming one of the new divas, LaTocha Scott, formerly of 90’s R&B girls group, Xscape; prepares for her musical rebirth with a live showcase/birthday celebration on her old stomping grounds surrounded by fellow divas, Faith Evans, Nicci Gilbert, Keke Wyatt, LaTocha and the other newcomer to the show, Angie Stone.

The only diva M.I.A. from the event was Syleena Johnson, who understandably stayed behind in Hotlanta because it was her son’s birthday.

Personally, as a mom I applaud her decision to prioritize family over more face time on camera, and naturally the other ladies, who are mothers themselves, shared the same sentiment.

While visiting the concrete jungle where dreams are made, a couple of the ladies took advantage of the opportunity to make the most of the excursion. During this episode, we see Faith taking a literal trip down memory lane as she walked

through the streets of Brooklyn, reminiscing with Lil Cease of Junior M.A.F.I.A. and T’yanna Wallace, her stepdaughter from slain husband/rap superstar, the Notorious B.I.G.

While Faith was visiting loved ones, the incredibly talented and often times comical Keke Wyatt and her ever-present husband, Michael, attended an important business meeting at a top-notch management firm to discuss

taking her singing career to the next level. In classic Keke fashion, she triggered jaws to drop around the room in subtle embarrassment when she belched, loudly, not once, but twice in front of one of the biggest names in the industry, prompting him to ask her if she’s ever had a “joke-free” business meeting and in so many words politely, yet sternly asked her to be serious for at least 15 minutes. Quickly

recognizing the gravity of the situation, Keke, who without question has raw, standout vocal talent, put herself in check instantly to regain control of the business at hand.

A little later in the episode Nicci and Faith are having a nice chat when suddenly Nicci halts mid-sentence while she’s looking at emails on her cell phone and retrieves a message that has been sent via email blast by an unknown source

with a photo on it promoting a tour with the cast.

To say both ladies were visibly agitated would be an understatement.

Faith made accusations of her image being illegally published without her authorization and said she was already “lawyered up” to issue a cease and desist action against this alleged tour that Nicci believes was orchestrated by

Syleena’s sister/manager, Syleecia.

In the final segments of the episode, Monifah has rolled out the purple carpet at the Katra Lounge in NYC and is rocking the crowd with her get-out-of-your-seat vocals. She appears to close her set with an impromptu jam session by inviting the other divas in the house to join her on the stage, complete with Keke on drums and LaTocha breaking into a

freestyle human beat box. Mo is overwhelmed by all the love her fans are giving her on her special night. The showcase is a success. Meanwhile, back at the ranch…Syleecia and Syleena are discussing the email that went out about the non-existent tour, and Nicci’s speculation that the Johnson sisters are behind this marketing scheme (which they deny) promises to deliver more finger

pointing, name calling and exiting stage left abruptly.

Things are getting interesting on Season Two of TV One’s estrogen extravaganza.

Will these R&B divas manage to set their creative differences aside and embark on a tour together? Tune in on Wednesdays at 10 pm Eastern/9 pm Central to find out.

With almost 60 percent of the vote, Harry LaRosiliere defeated Fred Moses, becoming Plano’s first Black mayor.

During the election, LaRosiliere touted his long history of leadership in Plano. Not only has he served six years as a popular member of the Plano City Council, LaRosiliere has chaired numerous nonprofit boards and commissions.

During his service on the city council, LaRosiliere said he is very proud of his efforts to promote economic development. He was instrumental in the decision by city council in 2005 to establish a fund to be used to attract and retain businesses in Plano.

Since that time, the Economic Development Fund has helped bring almost 17,000 jobs to Plano and landed corporate citizens such as Capital One, Pizza Hut, and Encana Oil and Gas.

Born in Haiti, LaRosiliere’s family moved to New York when he was three years old. He and his sister were first generation graduates of their family.

After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from City College of New York, LaRosiliere followed his entrepreneurial spirit and successfully ran a photography studio for eight years.

After moving to Plano in 1994, the boy who was good with numbers finally found his calling when he began his career as a financial advisor, a profession he has maintained to this day.

The LaRosiliere family resides in Plano. Harry followed Tracy to Dallas from New York, driving the last 18 hours straight with the idea of returning to New York in three to five years.

Now with his wife Tracy and their two daughters, ages 15 and 13, they know that Plano is their family home.

Within months of his arrival in Plano, Harry and Tracy began to get involved in their new community. Over the past 18 years, his commitment to servant leadership has remained strong. He currently serves as an advisory board member of CASA of Collin County and on the President’s Council at Texas Health Resources. LaRosiliere is also a member of the Plano Metro

Rotary Club and the Plano Chamber of Commerce.

He and his family worship at St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church.

He told voters, “I have always tried to conduct myself as a concerned and active citizen so that my family could be a part of what America is all about. We found our home in Plano and are proud of what this city has meant to our family and friends.

“We are all ambassadors of our community.”

Seventy-one founding members led by the Reverend L. W. Wilson organized Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church on May 6, 1988 and Rev. Wilson was installed as the Pastor.

The congregation later rented a building at 1235 Avenue F in Garland, Texas and God richly blessed Sweet Home and the membership grew to 102 members and eventually to 230 members.

Following the death of Pastor Wilson in 1995, Rev. D. L. Wilson was installed as Pastor. Under his leadership from 1995 into the year 2013, the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church’s membership has continued to increase and now exceeds 400 members.

With a total of 21 ministries, Sweet Home has been a beacon of light in its service to God’s people in the City of Garland and throughout the nation. The Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church celebrated its 25th church anniversary on Sunday, May 5, 2013. Pastor Wilson and members held a hallelujah, praise and worship service at 3:25 p.m.

Special guests included Pastor Tommy L. Thompson (speaker of the hour) and the North Park Missionary Baptist Church of Dallas, along with other churches from Garland and surrounding areas.

Pastor D. P. Dawkins of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Fate, Texas - a former member of Sweet Home and a “son-in-the-ministry” of Pastor Wilson - served as Master of Ceremonies for the program.

The mid-afternoon service began with opening remarks from Pastor Dawkins, followed by a spirit-filled devotional period from the Sweet Home brotherhood. Pastor Wilson led the congregational song, accompanied by Minister of Music Clifton Maxfield and the Sweet Home Anniversary Choir.

Tiffany Hayes delivered a warm welcome, sharing that she was just “12-years-old

when the church was organized and all the children called the adults “uncle” and “aunt.”

As a child, she recalled thinking, “Wow……this is a large family!”

Following an inspirational song selection by Sweet Home’s choir, Dr. Juanita Wallace gave a tribute to the church family sharing her “glance at heaven,” and commenting how “glad” she

was to be a founding member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church.

Prior to the offering Mrs. Gertha (Lady) Johnson, the sister of Pastor Wilson, blessed everyone in attendance as she sang, “If the Lord Doesn’t Do Anything Else for Me, He’s Done Enough.”

After the offertory period, Pastor Wilson lovingly introduced Pastor Thompson as the “shouting preacher” and he asked the waiting congregation to receive Pastor Thompson by the “raising of your right hand.”

The North Park Missionary Baptist Church Choir sang “I Know the Blood Still Works,” and North Park’s pastor called on a faithful member (Deacon Jimmy) to render a solo. The Deacon sang a heartfelt

rendition of “Shine on Me” and prepared a perfect segue to the spoken Word. Pastor Thompson preached an electrifying sermon from the Book of Revelation, chapter 22, verse 21, entitled “God Has Spoken, Let the Church Say, ‘Amen.’”

The Invitation to Christ was extended by Pastor Wilson. Next Monica Jones, chair of the 25th Anniversary Committee,

acknowledged all who contributed to the church anniversary celebration.

“Pastor Wilson desires Sweet Home to continue celebrating God’s blessings the rest of the year,” she said.

Pastor Wilson graciously allowed clergy on the rostrum to have remarks. He thanked God for the milestone of Sweet Home’s 25 years in existence, and in his closing he thanked North Park Missionary Baptist Church, led by Pastor Tommy L. Thompson, along with all other visitors for their presence at the anniversary service.

The benediction was given by Pastor T. L. Thompson.

Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church is located at 1019 South First Street in Garland, Texas, 75040.

TWC and OAG joint program collects child support, helps put parents back to work

AUSTIN – Since it launched in August 2005, more than $100 million in child support payments has been collected through the Noncustodial Parent (NCP) Choices program, a joint initiative between the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) of Texas and Texas district court judges. The NCP Choices Program is designed to help low-income unemployed or underemployed noncustodial parents who are behind on their child support payments overcome barriers to employment and career advancement and become economically self-sufficient.

“The NCP Choices program provides intensive employment services to help parents find and retain employment,” said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. “This initiative is an effective partnership that results in positive benefits for Texas.”

Those eligible for the NCP Choices program include noncustodial parents whose children are current or former recipients of public assistance, such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Medicaid or foster care and who reside in participating counties in Texas. Last month, additional funding allowed for an expansion of the NCP Choices program to serve low-

income noncustodial parents not associated with these programs.

“Year after year, the NCP Choices program has demonstrated tremendous success achieving program objectives,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. “For every dollar spent on the NCP Choices program, more than $3 is returned to Texas children.”

The program is designed to help prepare noncustodial parents to better financially and emotionally support their children by combining intensive case management and employment services to noncustodial parents, such as job referrals, job development, short-term training, subsidized employment and work experience. General Educational Development and English as a Second Language classes, and retention and career advancement assistance also are available.

"This important program allows TWC to play a role in helping parents find gainful employment and become economically self-sufficient as part of our overall efforts to ensure Texas employers have access to a skilled workforce," said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Hope Andrade.

Since the program began in August 2005, more than 15,600

Texas parents have received assistance from the NCP Choices program and the number of participating

local workforce development board areas has grown from five to 17. Of those individuals who have participated in the program, 70 percent entered employment within an average of nine weeks, and 63 percent retained employment for at least six months. Approximately 10 percent of the collections also were returned to TANF, Medicaid, foster care and child support collections programs. For more information on the NCP Choices program, visit TWC online at www.texasworkforce.org/welref/noncustodial-parent-choices-program-overview.html.
