    Languages/Technical SIGby Chase Allen

asca1 (the SIG) seems to havefallen on hard times. This ispartly due to an absenteecoordinator (John Schoeppner -

who did a great job in the years he wascoordinator), partly due to a lesseninginterest in Pascal and partly due to somelack of initiative on my part, in keepingthings going.

Since there seems to be interest in asomewhat broader scope than just Pascal,I will attempt to get a new SIG going, with a charter to look at any and allprogramming languages, as well. as thetechniques of programming peripheraldevices-read that as cards in slots! Atthe most recent board meeting I wassorry to hear that. the App1esoft SIG hadgone by the wayside. So, we shall evenattempt to include subjects of interest toyou BASIC (sic) prograIlimers, but youwill have to provide some experts in thearea to present topics of interest.

The meetings will be at FirstMinnesota (formerly Minnesota Federal)in Hopkins, in the original Pascal timeslot-2nd Wednesday of the month at7:30. The first meeting will beWednesday, April 9th. The subject willbe a comparison of Apple Pascal andTURBO Pascal. Future subjects willinclude a self-help seminar on how tocode the Checkmate MultiRam lie cardwhich has 768K of RAM.

So, all you ever wanted to leamabout programming, and assorted othertopics. The call is out now for topicrequests, and some help from you expertsin your own area of expertise, to share itwith us.

New Branch in North East Area!by Dick Marchiafava

I am pleased to announce the start of anew branch of our Apple User Group!Mike Frazee of Stillwater has agreed tobe the Branch Coordinator. This branchis intended to serve membership in thearea north and east of St. Paul.

Our newest branch is as yetunnamed. (Referred to as N.E. area branchon Calendar) The name and preferedmeeting location will be selected by themembers interested in being inv olvedwith this new resource and in going tomeetings.

The first meeting will be April 23rd,at the Stillwater Public Library in theMargaret Rivers Room at 7:00 PM.Come on over! Prpgrams and meetingschedules will be discussed.

AppleWorks, one of the largestselling programs in the country, will bethe feature of this first meeting.

If you have any questions orsuggestions about this branch you maycall Mike Frazee at 430-2944, or DickMarchiafava at 572-9305.

Business SIG Announcementsby Dick MarchiafavaApril 10: RAMDISKS, Large

Capacity Floppy Drives, Hard Drivesand Ram disks will be demonstrated. Also large capacity 3.5 inch diskdrives. There will be a paneldiscussion on hard drives.

May 15: WordprocessinglllCkages;BusinessWriter Erik Carlson,AppleWriter - Ken Ruzek, Wordstar -Gene Kasper, Bank Street Writer lie -Bob French.

You may contact Dick Marchiafavaat 612-572-9305 if you have anyquestions about this schedule.

Small Talk SIGby Dan BuchlerYou may notice a new SIG listed in thecalendar. This SIG will be devoted to theSmall Talk programming language andwill be hosted by Martin McClure, at250 S. Milton St., St Paul on the 2ndWednesday of each month. The firstmeeting will be on April 9th. Martin'stelephone no. is 227-9348.

Small Talk, according to Martin, isvery powerful yet the most fun languageto program in. It was developed back in1972 at the Xerox, Palo Alto ResearchCenter and was the origin of many ideasfor the Lisa and Macintosh includingsuch things as overlapping windows. From research with children and adults atPalo Alto, it was discovered thatprevious programming experience doesn'tmake any diifference in learning SmalTalk. So that means that you, thenovice, can come and learn about SmallTalk.

MacSIGsby Dan BuchlerThe two Macintosh SIGs continue toflourish. The NonTechnical User (ntu) is

getting more organized and will featurethe Abaton 300 Scanner at the April 7thmeeting. The Abaton, which uses aMicroTech scanner, is a true digitizerwhich feeds and scans a piece of paperdigitizing the information thereon at 200or 300 spots/inch. The qUality of thescanned image is generally' better thanthat which can be obtained fromThunderScan or a TV frame-grabberdevice. Abaton are also developingpattern recognition software which willallow trnslation of charcters containedwithin the scan to ASCII codes-opticalcharacter recognition!

The Main MacSIG on April 28thwill interest those of you who want toincrease the memory capacity of yourMac.

Future Milli'app'les Meetingsby Tom Edw~rdsThings· are on track for several of themeetings ahead for the Mini'app'lesClub. Please remember, our "regular"meeting is often planned with emphasison universal appeal. That is, the mainprogram should be. of interest.· to ..illlXcomputer user and not specific to .••• onemodel from the Apple line. . Machinespecific topics are usually left to theSIGs. Better attendance at the "regular"meeting can often get us betterprograms. The folks that are beingasked to make a presentation often willask "how many will be in attendance?"With the First Class Peripheralspresentation of last fall, we had somespecific goals to meet, and in so doing, where able to have a $700 door prizepresented by First Class.

Although I can't promise that eachmonth's "regular" meeting will be 100%generic, please look the calendar over, totally. Try to pick some othermeetings that may be of interest to youand attend one or two. Give someone onthe board feedback about what you sawWas it a good program, did it interestyou, and if not, did it seem to be ofinterest to others that were there?

With a little effort, we should beable to improve the value of theprograms to the membership, but weneed some thoughtful suggestions onwhat works and what doesn't.

Here's a schedule of meetingsthrough June. Hope that there are thingshere to pull you into enjoying an

CompuKeyspublishes software that helps usersgain proficiency at the keyboard. Thescreen is highly graphic during eachtutorial. Lessons are available foralphabets or numerals and symbols.Developed by educators with aclassroom environment in mind, thereare several additional aids forstructuring individual skill levels andmanaging individual progress.

Mini'app'le memberMarc Renner has suggested a softwareoriented program, consisting ofcomparisons of similar programsavailable from several sources.Spreadsheets and copy programstopped his list of "compares."Another suggestiop was to look at"mouse" software (though my firstletter to Roger Wagner Publishing wasnot answered, I may try it again).Larry Strathman's suggestion to call onSpringboard Software for a programturned out well. I'1l try to score onMarc's suggestion, too.

Future extendedfunctions will include high security dataencryption of documents, math functionsand communications.

    CP/M Update:

After distilling the library descriptionson the 2 double sided CP/M directorydisks we received, I have reduced thesuperfluous information considerably. So, the verbiage now consumes a singleside. Therefore, I've decided to put thesame information on the back of the diskin DOS textfiles so those of us who donot know/have CP/M can see what'savailable. [Actually this is the easiestthing for me to do since the first thing Idid upon receiving .the disks. was convertall the documentation to DOS anyway -- sorry CP/Mers]

The directory disks will be availableat meetings, just the PROGRAM diskswill have to be mail ordered. Also, Ineglected to mention pricing. Thedirectory disk will be the standard $5 (ifits bought at meeting) and $6 for thedirectory or any PROGRAM disk whenmail ordered.

Printer functions are not hiddencharacters as in many WPs. They arereadable and can be customized to matchthe features of your printer.

Nifty Works can be used on an Apple][+, lIe or Ilc. It works with the extrakeys, 80 columns, and extra memory onthe lIe and Ilc (if present). It uses theshift key modification, lower case chipand language card on the ][+ if they areinstalled. Configuration is automatic foreach system.

Nifty Works is easy to learn andremember because its 40+ functions areefficiently invoked using nested menusthat are always shown. This program ismore than a traditional word processor, and is appropriately named 'NiftyWorks'.

Nifty Info also has a "Works UserKit" which contains a more detailed NiftyWorks manual with numerous examples;a utility disk; a user ID number (whichpermits you to obtain telephone-supportfor questions); and the latest version ofNifty Works. The cost of this WorksUser Kit is $24.95. C!

rediting functions at your command, youcan move and edit ~ext in virtually everyway. Adjusting forms is very easy.

About four pages of text can bewritten and stored in one document.Your document is saved in a normal textfile which means that other programssuch as a spelling checker can utilizedthe stored text. [Saving 4-pagedocuments can eat up disk space butmaybe a text compression "extendedfunction" (see below) will be availablein the future.] The file handlingfunctions (load, save, lock, unlock, delete) are all available from within theprogram. Another feature is that onlytext files are displayed (via menu, ofcourse). A second file can be mergedwith the current work file in memory tofill in the names or other parts of a formfile. Nifty, huh?

Many features are includedwhich indicate that the authorwanted Nifty Works to be easyto use, such as:• Free-style text entry• Smooth scrolling text• Scrolling speed adjustment• 40 column proof-reading mode

On a forty column screen, the display scrolls side to side aswell as up and down to followthe text entry. Even thescrolling speed can be adjusted! The author says that even thefastest typists can't out-pace thisprogram (although my 2-fingertyping could not verify thisclaim). It appears that a lot ofeffort was put forth to speed upthe usual bottlenecks in wordprocessors. A proof readingmode is available for the fortycolumn screen.

Nifty Works has a very nicefeature that allows it to select"extended functions". Oneextended function comes with theprogram that will sort the worktext. This function sorts up tonine levels deep, and is also freeformat (multi-line). The sort caneven work if some data ismissing, such as middle initials

    A Reviewby C. Thiesfeld

iftuess what? There is anotherword processor available now."So what!" you say. Well, this one is offered on a

Mini'app'les personal domain disk. (SeeApril Showers elsewhere in thisnewsletter.) That's what's new. It hasseveral 'Nifty' features (pardon the pun)that make it a smart investment. And,the requested fee for this PersonalDomain disk is $OO.OO!

When you get the disk fromMini'app'les and it doesn't boot as youwould expect, don't get too upset. Itdoes not contain a disk operating system(DOS). Instead it gives instructions onhow to put your own DOS on the disk. You probably already know theadvantages of using an altemative toApple's DOS 3.3. The author of NiftyWorks says that ProntoDOS and Diversi-DOS load the program twice as fast butdocument files load at about the samespeed.

The disk you receive includes theprogram and twenty pages ofdocumentation, plus examples. The docsupplied is quite thorough, althoughsome of Nifty Works' more advanceduses are not covered in detail. Theauthor encourages duplicating the disk aslong as "the provisions of the licensingagreement are followed."

Most of the editing functions arequite normal: insert/delete lines,cuUpaste lines, erase lineslpageslworkarea, auto center, etc. However, onefunction called "geometric block editing"is quite unusual. Unlike the blockfunctions found on other word processorswhich work on one or more lines, thisfunction works on lines and columnssimultaneously. The size of the blockcan be anywhere from a single characterto the whole work area. The blockdesignated is by marking the upper-leftand lower-right comers with specialbrackets. When you press Ctrl-B, amenu appears at the top of the screenthat allows you to move, copy, erase orshift the block. The shift option letsyou move the block in all four directionsone linelcolumn at a time. Withgeometric block editing and the other

Moving Right Along...Curtis opened the evening's

program, .an overview 10 themanagement, utility, application and funof desk accessories. He began with avery detailed and easy-to-follow tripthrough the application that enables oneto construct their own entry into theacademy of "Top Desk AccessoryCombinations of the Twentieth Centry",namely, Apple's Font/DeskAccessory Mover utility. This al-lows you to move DA (desk accessory)and font files from one disk to another, install those of your choice into the"system" so they are available by menuselection, remove those that have provenof no particular value for certain uses orreplace them with better versions.

If you want, you can "attach" DAs tospecific applications, instead of thesystem. Then, DA's or fonts that areimportant for enhancing certainapplications will only be available whenthat application is run. The trick to thisultimate customization is holding downthe "Option" key as you prepare to opena System file with the Moverapplication. Done correctly, you will bepresented with a menu of all files on thedisk, notjust sytemor f0tlUDA files.

Neeq to grab a 'Paint picture to addto your report? Or just need.to. draw outa quick detail, maybe a chart, to add?Use a modem, write a letter, find youdon't •have room on the disk to store along document, conjure up some spread-sheet data to paste into a letter? Theutility and ease is that you don't have tostop what you are doing, load in anotherapplication and then try to merge thingstogether with clipboards and an everelusive scrapbook to manage.

Dave followed with a practicalexalllple of how a Windows accessoryhelps' him to select bits and pieces torecombine them into something freshand new. Other accessories can evenhelp you work with the accessories, moving them or perhaps just taking onefor a "test drive" without actuallyinstalling it into a system and restartingto see what it does.

Dave, and others in the Club, haveamassed many by dialing in toCompuServe's MAUG and downloadingthem. Look for the best to show up onfuture MacDOM's from the MacSIG groupin Mini'app'les. t!

however, falls to those swinging intothe upper reaches of RAM. The 3rdparties have offered many solutions tothose stretching to I, 2, 3 and even 4megs of memory. Softwarelhardwarefor these choices result in machinesthat do nQ1 work alike. Apple hasadded to the obfustication level withthe upgrade path to the MacPlus... yetanother hurdle to be scaled by thegrowing Mac'er!

o Closely paralleling the upgradequestion is the future of the 512K Mac.It may not be long before thismachine tumbles into corporateoblivion, joining some othernamesakes clinging to the edge of theprecipice by naught but the slimmestof margins, or slipping off to fallunder the crush of marchingtechnology.

o Laserwriter was worth a few quickies. One complainer's lament: non-laserfonts look very poor in final image onpaper. Here, the things to check forare that you have the "laserfonts"installed in the System and that "FontSubstitution" is selected (in the"Printer Set-up" menu). It also appearsthat there is no italic variationavailable for the Symbol font.

o The ImageWriter II resulted in "goodnews, bad news" comments. Praisedfor its additional 'speed, quality ofimpression, and ability to acceptsingle sheets without removing thecontinuous form stock, it was knockedfor the incompatibility with older~(.)fvt's, resulting in the need for arevision to the driver (now 2.1) toapplyaJix.

Spelling checkers are getting hot.MacLightnlng and MacSpells-Well are new entries into the fold, butno clear recommendations could beoffered by those attending.

o Databases: In the "memory resident"genre, OverVue is the hands-downwinner. Tonight's group was moreinterested in the "power users" questfor "relationality", flexibility andgargantuan file size. OverVue comesup a bit short in some of these things, and the next step up the ladder seemsto fall to Helix or Omnls 3.

o Again, disk drives whirled before themembers. The questioner, workingwith a 128K Mac however, is limitedto a 400K type. The new 800K unitsfrom Apple (and others) need to tieinto a (min) 512K Mac in order to usethe new HFS Finder.

o Those considering memory upgradeshave many decisions to face. Goingfrom 128K to 512K, Apple and anumber of "3rd party" vendors offeranswers, all of which function alike. The variables are workmanship, warranty, quality of materials andprice. If you initially opt for a non-Apple bump to 512K,and later decideto go for the MacPlus, Apple will lookat your Mac as though it is but a 128Kunit. The merry-go-round of decisions,
