BIRDS of PARSA WILDLIFE RESERVE

This systematic list is a compilation of the bird species in Parsa Wildlife Reserve (P\VR) and its proposed buffer zone as identified and recorded by Peace Corps' Volunteers, Bird Education Society i\lembersl Chitwan, and PWR Rangers from 1999 - 2001. It is not a complete list but provides better documentation of the resident, migrant, and vagrant species and can serve as a baseline reference for the kno\\'n a\'ifauna in PV/R.

Additionally, 34 species were not recorded in this study but listed as recorded in Biological and Cultural Diversity of Parsa Wildlife Reserve (1995): Chaudary, R.P. Globally threatened status and systematic order are taken as cited in Birds of Nepal (2000): Grimmett, R., Inskipp, C. and Inskipp, T. For each entry, formerly referred to common names are included for easier recognition.

As PWR is adjacent to Royal Chitwan National Park (RCl\TP) and protects much of the same flora and fauna, bird species' seasonal and nationally threatened status are indicated as reported in Birds of Chinvan (1998): Baral, H.S. and Upadhyay, G.P. However, how common or rare a species' popUlation might be in an area can only be accurately determined after several years of observation. Therefore, only for those species that were frequently seen has a status been given in the "Remarks" column. For those migrant, vagrant, as well as for species referred to as resident but only sighted once in this study, the months of the sightings have been documented.

It is hoped this report will not only serve as a baseline reference for Parsa Wildlife Reserve's birds and add to the reserve's inventory of species but will also generate increased interest in the reserve for future studies, further research, and for visirors as well who enjoy birding in this remarkably avifaunal rich country.

11 INTRODUCTIONII

Parsa 'Wildlife Reserve lies adjacent to Royal Chitwan ~ational Park in Nepal's south-central region and encompasses 568 sq. km from the Inner Terai to the Churia Hills. Established in 1984 for the protection of a resident wild elephant (Elep/zas maximus) population, the reserve is characterized by mostly sal (Shorea robusta) forest and porous, gravelly soil (known as the Bhabar zone) with the Churia hills arising abruptly as they run east to west across the reserve. Ridges, shaded ravines, and seasonal streambeds cutting through the jungle intermingle. to create other varied habitats of pine, mixed broadleaf, and riverine forests within PVv"R.

These habitats harbor a rich faunal diversity - including many endangered species such as bengal tiger (Panthera rigris) , striped hyena (Hyena hyena), gaur (Bos gaurus), scaly ant-eater, python (Python molurus), and golden monitor lizard. Much of the wildlife migrates with the seasons - coming more southerly from the Churia Hills during monsoon season when water is more plentiful.

Despite the bio-diversity, PWR - lying in the shadO\v of RCNP - remains largely unstudied without full documentation. Similarly, although an estimated variety of 300 bird species is believed to be present, a complete inventory has not been conducted, hence the justification for this report.

G.P., 1998) are the Great Slaty Woodpecker, Great HombilL Oriental Pied Hombill, Red-headed Trogon. Sil\'er-backed Needletail, Grass Owl, Pin-tailed Green Pigeon, Crested Goshawk, Changeable Hav,K Eagle, Tawny Eagle, Black Stork, Hooded Pitta, Indian Pitta, Rosy :\1ini\'et Hill ~\fyna, and Little Spiderhunter.

Irregularities to note consisT of Orange-headed Ground Thrushes, primarily a summer \'isitor, being s:ill :;:ghte-i ir. ~:1e \\"ill~e~" ::1:::'1":,:hs of Decemoer and January and conversely, Spot-winged Starlings and an Asian Brown Flycatcher. though considered winter visitors, being sighted during June and July . Although listed as a sum ... '11er \"isitor (Baral. H.S. and Upadhyay, G.P., 1998), the Indian Kightjar \\'as observed in the winter months fro~ December - February. Grimmet, Inskipp, and Inskipp (2000) list the species as possibly a resident.

IlcONCLUSIONl1

Despite the scarcity of permanent water sources within Parsa Wildlife Resen'e, the resenre's varied rorest habitat and elevation pro\'ide for a good variety of bird species (253 - representing 47 families). Special attention should be assigned to PWR's proposed buffer zone, as ponds and streams in this area auract many water species (i.e. storks, plovers, gallinules, sandpipers, etc.) that are uncommon in the resen'e and are thus predominantly outside the protected area. There is a narrow belt of natural forest between PWR's southern boundary and the \'illage communities of the Bara and Parsa districts. This belt is under pressure from the popUlation and needs to be consen'ed - not only for the birds living

within - but also for the water species. As the forest goes, so will the water and subsequently the birds. Education and conservation for this area is critical.

Additionally, the villages of Rambouli and Bhata - in a core area of the reserve - are prime viewing areas where water is found year round and the forest is intact. Still, here too, pressure is evident, though there are current proceedings and discussions to translocate the villages.

Further research on Parsa Wildlife Reserve's avifauna is greatly needed to establish a better working knowledge of species' season and status, as well as to simply document the birds found in the area. Many areas well in the Churia Hills remain remote and lacking in collected observational data. This study serves as a baseline for such an understanding. With more investigation, plans can be better devised for the reserve's management and development - possibly as an eco-tourist birding destination to help reduce pressure on adjacent Royal Chitwan National Park.
